Cell Phone Sympony Cafe

flyingdog.jpg

Is that real? Do dogs fly now? I don't want to be punked again.

LIFEHACKS! YOUR LIFE JUST GOT HACKED! But seriously, a few of these are cool.

What the Actual is this?

ICYMI: Driving to the 7-Eleven in Egypt.

I always enjoy this viral marketing stunt for the Carrie remake. Never saw the movie, but the viral marketing I give four stars! Highest rating!

A little outdoor painting.

Is this real? I don't want to be Lamonted again.

Saving a tiny baby dolphin from a stray net.

Doggie being adopted from a shelter.

Birds want to race a speedboat.

Friends.

Co-parenting.

Oh he did NOT!

Cellphone alert signals: An Interpretive Dance Demonstration:

So, little brag, I understood most of that. He said "Suoniamo mi amici, vi faccio ascoltare una bellisima tarantella, tu suona una tarantella? Ma va bene?" I think. Which is "Let's sing, my friends, I'm going to play (literally: I'm going to make you listen to) a very beautiful tarantella, [to bird] you sing a tarantella, okay is that good?" Later I think he says Dai, Roma. "Dai" means "go!" or "do it." I think Roma might be the name of the bird.

Weirdest thing, I was watching Sherlock last night, and they used the word "ta" several times. I've never heard this before, but apparently it's a common British interjection. It means "thank you" or "thanks."

Like when Watson paid for a map, the guy said "Ta" and then when he gave Watson his change Watson said "Ta" back to him.

I watch a lot of British stuff and I've never, ever heard this. I've even seen this Sherlock four times and never noticed it.

The Hounds of Baskerville

Have you watched the HBomberguy "Sherlock is Garbage and here's why"? It's pretty good, even if he's usually an annoying leftist, but I was just watching a couple of them and they're not bad. It's really season 3 where the quality drops, and then it really drops badly in season 4.

Without having seen those videos, my take is that at least part of the problem is Watson's wife. The actress playing her was dating Martin Freeman at the time, and so I guess the writers thought they had to put her into as much of the show as possible, and it didn't work.

There were other problems too, but that was a big one.

Moriarty's the other big problem. I actually liked his character alright while he was around, but the show had literally no idea what to do without him, and so (like Mrs. Watson) they kept bringing him back even after he was dead. The way they did it in Season 4 (especially the last episode) was just beyond pathetic.

81 Sherlock is a perfect example of how that writer works, though. He starts out with a great idea, then runs it into the ground forgetting what the show is supposed to be about and focusing more on clever twists than telling a story or characterization. And he made Holmes into a shockingly horrible human being. Doyle made him eccentric and sometimes forgetful of others, arrogant, but likable and interesting.

And while he started well with Watson, by the final episode of the fourth season Watson was just another dolt surprised at everything Holmes did.

84 anyway, the HBomberguy video does make a good point: As the seasons progress, the ep's are less and less about the myseries and crimes, and more just written to show Sherlock showing off or being rude or being brilliant or being "The Most Special Boy Ever!" And that part is true, as it grinds on it becomes more and more about the "mythology" of the character, John's wife, Sherlock's girlfriend, their relationship, the relationship with Moriarity, and of course Sherlock always being the Most Special Boy ever.

Unless they radically changed the setting from the book, "Baskerville" was set in Devonshire, in southwest England.

And in the book, they even talk about how people in Devonshire have a very strong local identity, so it might in fact be part of the regional dialect, rather than standard British.

I think it is, yeah. And yes, too much Mycroft. I liked how Doyle handled the other characters better, he brought them in to add interest and more drama to the books when just Holmes and Watson was getting stale. Not right at first.

105 As the seasons progress, the ep's are less and less about the mysteries and crimes, and more just written to show Sherlock showing off or being rude or being brilliant

That was my primary complaint. This is supposed to be about mysteries and deduction with Holmes defeating criminals not bizarre, random events that Holmes implausibly figures out.

But Watson is the key. A good Sherlock story has to handle Watson right. You can tell how good or crappy its going to be by how Watson is handled.

I think it was the wedding episode, and it was so fey and self-indulgent that I felt a burning hatred for the entire series, sight unseen.

Well, he was one of the co-writers. Guess he was very impressed with himself. Though I did like the twist in the pilot episode where the audience was led to believe he was Moriarty and then surprise! Actually, Sherlock's brother.

In general though, the series did present far too much of Sherlock's family and personal background. Another reason Season 4 sucked ass.

I would guess not. Two reasons. First, tree trimmers tie off the branches they are cutting, especially if they are around any thing that they can fall on. Like that truck in one shot. The branches are oddly shaped and can fall in an unpredictable manner.

Second, there is that building in the background of a later shot. If there is any kind of malfunction, looks pretty dangerous.

I don't think it would even be safe in uninhabited areas because of the fire danger.

I think that version of Sherlock was more sympathetic, as he was portrayed as a severely damaged, barely functional drug addict. It's clear he needed Joan Watson to keep him on the straight and narrow. Though it seemed like a co-dependent relationship at times.

Same old "I'm a foul-mouthed Communist" routine that was in vogue in the '70s, boring by the '90s and absolutely fucking stultifying by the '00s, but this time... it's on YouTube! Spare me.

Especially now that, in the '20s, Marxism is the unquestioned 800-lb. Gorilla in the room of American culture and politics. It's hegemonic. This shtick is as hot and edgy as a block of dry ice.

He says what I said last night - this was a complete vanity project play made by Fox board members and owners - they knew it was going to tank viewership, hugely cost them advert market share, tank reviews and profits, kill Hannity and Laura who, as I tried to explain last night, are FOLLOW INS for Tucker's audience - to do this is not to care about any of that - profits don't matter in media plays.

The Murdochs and the other media board members use these media vehicles like they're paying for fun rides on the Pirates of the Caribbean - it's peanuts out of their pockets paid out for the thrills, spills and fun of it all, ie a sunk cost for having lots of fun and showing out to your ultra-wealthy connected friends who likewise have so much filthy lucre they could give a flying shit-less about America, nationalities or other some such rube patriotic tripe. I get you have an audience here - but there is no need to sugar coat Trump - he's a vain buffoon - its not like everyone here who has run any business doesn't know it.

Real Estate, nay Real Estate in NY, doesn't take huge brains if you're gifted by your family with a decent starting portfolio to build upon and a gigantic NY-sized media ego to pump it up, but you do need that NYC sized ego and the NY in your face insistence thjat goes with it if you are to get past all the NY City construction mob interests to get anything done - Donald Trump had that in spades.

He also loved being in the media, even if it was negative media - it's a type of NYC sickness I've seen plenty that infects most of the personalities here - fame to Trump (unlike his kids actually) is like a lamp is to a moth. He's what he is - he's going to do whatever makes Don Trump get in the news - he's also going to be a businessman that wants to get his name in the news - improvement over Dems and the GOPe? Yup.

Sarah Hoyt has a Substack page, she doesn't post there, but you can arrange it to be strictly subscription only and post cat pictures if you like.

I have a different take from most other Trump supporters on this.

TL;DR: Trump shouldn't even have to have a primary. He should have no challengers, and the GOP needs to be united on telling the country that the election was STOLEN, and Trump needs to have the second term that was cheated away from him.

348 I think it might be that a lot of NYers see Trump from a different perspective than folks from other regions. A subliminal bias because he's a local. Maybe the regular animosity that NYers have for each other kind of bleads through. Everyone I've met from NYC since he became pres has pretty much hated him.

Just a theory. I don't know, just throwing this out there.

I don't doubt DeSantis can take some heat from the media. He already has, and hasn't folded. At least very much.

It's Party heat that matters. They can always correct the media problems if they want. If they don't, you're cooked. It's the problem with any candidate who comes out of that narrowest point of the Party funnel. They got there for a reason.
