With SSD pricing in free fall - I just checked on the PNY CS2241 and the 4TB model is down by 45% since January - it is tempting to just buy a dozen of them and build a big RAID-5 array and forget about mechanical drives and their abysmal random I/O performance (one budget SSD can do as many random I/Os as two hundred mechanical drives) and their inevitable hardware failures.

Except - how? There are some expensive hardware NVMe RAID cards but they won't work in my case - literally - because my Hyte Y60 PC case only accepts one full-height card. There are cheap half-height cards that take one or two SSDs but depend on channel bifurcation and most consumer motherboards just don't have the PCIe lanes. And there's the SilverStone CS01-HS which tough luck I just bought the last two on the market.

And then there's the Asus FlashStor 6 and 12 Pro, which are compact desktop boxes (12x8x2 inches) that take 6 and 12 M.2 SSDs respectively. (AnandTech)

The FlashStor 6 has dual 2.5Gb Ethernet ports; the 12 Pro has a single 10Gb port. Apart from that they share a 6W Intel Celeron N5105 CPU (not fast, but adequate for this kind of thing), 4GB of RAM, four USB ports, HDMI, and an S/PDIF audio output if you want to use one as a media server.

Which is not a terrible idea: There are no noising spinning drives and the cooling fan is nearly silent at 18dB.

These are real NASes too. They run Btrfs where I'm a ZFS fan, but they support snapshots, SMB, NFS, iSCSI (so you can mount part of the space it as a dedicated rather than a shared disk), rsync, and a swarm of Docker apps if you're into that kind of thing.

4GB of RAM will disappear fast if you're running Docker apps, but the memory is upgradeable using standard DDR4 SO-DIMMs, which I have lying around everywhere. The specs say it goes to a maximum of 16GB, but I've seen reports that these Celeron chips work fine with 32GB.

$449 for the FlashStor 6, $799 for the 12 Pro. I'm going to get that one as soon as I can. Even if I can't get 10Gb Ethernet running for the whole house it's small and quiet enough that it can sit in the main office rather than the computer room.

Oh, and while there are no spinning drives included, either model will support up to two external expansion units with four 3.5" drives each if you need more capacity.

If you need a tiny high-performance fanless router to complete your home network after setting up your new NAS CWWK (who?) has you covered. (Serve the Home)

The i5-1235U is more than three times the speed of the N5105 in the Asus NAS above, so it should be able to keep the packets flying through the six 2.5Gb Ethernet ports and the optional WiFi but you may have to fight with it to get your preferred operating system installed. It comes with a preconfigured key for Windows 10/11 Pro - just download and install it and it will activate itself - but pfSense, Proxmox VE, and Ubuntu 22.04 all needed workarounds to get running.

And if you hoped to run VMWare ESXi, just give up. It doesn't work on Intel's big/little CPUs and there are no plans to fix that.

Apart from all the Ethernet ports there are four USB ports and HDMI and DisplayPort, so if you want to run it as a media server.... Why? Anyway, you can, and it has an M.2 slot and two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots for up to 64GB of RAM in case you have that lying around.
If you want a 14" laptop with the Four Essential Keys in their proper location - in a column to the right of the main keyboard - reasonable CPU and graphics performance, a 1080p screen covering 100% of sRGB, and the ability to upgrade to 64GB of RAM using those DDR4 SO-DIMMs you have lying around, there is exactly one such model available: HP's Pavilion 14.

Not the Pavilion Plus 14. That has a better screen (2240x1400 or 2880x1800 options are available) but all Plus 14 models have soldered RAM.

I skipped over this one not realising that it had dual SO-DIMM slots, but after checking and double-checking it really does, and the screen is far superior to options from Acer or Dell.

Plus it's not at all expensive. I'll be getting one of these. I'm tempted to buy more than one, but since I'm planning to build some new desktop systems it wouldn't really make sense to do so.

Yesterday I commented that I hate the outside temp readout on my Buick -- I hate to be reminded that it's 92 F. outside for so much of the year -- and that I wished I could turn it off. Someone suggested changing the display to Celsius. I don't know if this Buick has that, but the Park Avenue did. All the readouts, including my speed and water temp, could be switched to Celsius. Reading 32 C. in summer was a lot easier to take . . . until I opened the door and the hot wetness hit me in the face.

So, I lost my phone on Friday. No idea where it disappeared to. A second look at localized Black Holes? Anyway, after a process, I got another phone. Similar to the one I had, less space storage wise but I don't need much. It cost less then my now lost phone. About $50 less. I hate setting up new phones. Just a pain. Mostly just deleting the extras Verizon, Google, and Motorola think I want. Actually, it's mostly Google. I'm still hopeful that in whatever alternate dimension my phone is in, somebody or thing will send it back.

April in Las Cruces is lovely. 80s, no humidity. Plus I haven't run the furnace or the air conditioner in about 5 weeks. My electric bill this month was $24.00 and my gas bill should be about the same. June, July, and August are the AC months: $80.00 per month for electricity.

Not because of the cost, but because of the plastic waste. How trendy can you get.

It's true, we can put in a water cooler, and the units now accept the big 5-gallon water jugs into the bottom -- so I won't have to hoist those 40-lb. barrels into place. And the company will deliver and take away the empties.
It's just the rush to jump on a bandwagon that annoys me.

I upgraded mine in 2018 which is some time ago, but since I'm a low volume user and the drive shut off, I probably won't be in the market for another NAS for a few more years. The one highlighted in the posting looks really excellent. I've been using Synology boxes for years and their OS is so nice and unlike QNAP they don't have a security issue about every 15 seconds.

Not to insinuate that coders are less then manly, because I've done the trades and coded, but if I was looking for an in demand career that couldn't be outsourced it's in the trades.

Design a website, write a data base program, or pull out the wiring diagram and diagnose and repair a three hundred thousand dollar piece of equipment? All good. But if you want the lifetime job security and the 15 year mortgage on the million dollar home, get your hands a little dirty.

Thank you. That's kinda what I thought but was reluctant to assume. Work Laptop I have now (hp z-book) has the horizontally across the top of the number pad. A maybe almost full size keyboard, boat anchor but does the job. MatLab makes it get loud with the cooling fan, but it doesn't snivel about the cpu load or parallel processing threads I use there.

It's 38 degrees on this side of the Schuylkill. Lowe's has it's plants outside already and I grabbed 10 tomato plants yesterday and they're now in the ground. Tonight was the last night I could see the possibility of harmful temps. Hopefully ripe tomatoes by the fourth of July.

I want to thank you for being a positive influence on me over the last couple years. I had allowed myself to slip intellectually and morally to a more dark place bred while on active duty in my 20s. Now, I tend to temper how I approach people, circumstances, and difficult times with a combined WWJ say to me, then...how would Fen react to this? If the 2nd even approaches sadness at my poor behavior, I don't do it, or say it. You've been life positive for me, and I wanted to say thank you.

My daughter went the vegan route for a while when she lived here. Then she wanted her own apartment to share with a friend and had to get a J O B. A job which required her to stock shelves. Picking up cans and putting them in the right location. By the end of the day, a thousand or more pounds of weight, all while walking around for hours on end. She discovered that you can't replace that level of calorie burning with a head of lettuce. End of her vegan experience.

If a female politician came out with some statement wanting to ban abortion for any reason, I'd have no issue with it. When a male (R) politician says no abortion including rape or incest, I cringe. But a couple of them have come out on record with that in recent elections and brought the entire party down with them. Women would never come out with such an all encompassing statement because they have sufficient empathy for their fellow sisters and would never want them subjected to a pregnancy caused by rape or incest. If you can find an example of it, please share. I've been wrong once before.

There may be some like you, but it seems to be a force that drives a lot of angry women to the polls to vote against the candidate. Soros knows this too, which is why Pennsylvania was inundated with ads everywhere with the (R) candidate for Governor caught saying what he never should have been caught on tape saying.

It effected every race in the state and even flipped our formerly (R) majority in the State House. It's not that I'm pro-abortion, because I am absolutely not. But there are some cases that are so heinous, or life threatening to the woman that an asterisk needs to be placed in legislation. I don't want to live under socialism because some women want to kill their fetus and our (R) politicians are too stupid to avoid stepping on the third rail.

Let me give you a perfect example: When Obama first ran for office he was opposed to gay marriage. Remember? Then, after he was secure in his second term the truth came out. Republicans need to learn from this. Keep your convictions, just be careful about who you reveal them to. Win the office, then pursue your convictions. There's not much you can do with convictions if you don't win.

As to cheating in Pennsylvania, I poured over the record for votes cast for Governor and Senator and nothing seemed out of the ordinary - except the (R) candidate for Governor did very, very poorly, much worse then Oz. Now I have to accept Philadephia's numbers at 80% (D) though I don't think that is correct. But that's pretty damn consistent with the past six years. Just enough to carry the state because of so many apathetic voters in rural areas.
