How Walmart Pushed Arkansas Public Schools to Go Woke
Documents reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon show a private company's unprecedented effort to inject DEI into classrooms

In January 2020, Walmart approached public school administrators in Bentonville, Arkansas, about hosting diversity training sessions for the district.
"We want people to feel welcomed, comfortable, and safe living here" in Northwest Arkansas, Candice Jones, Walmart's head of diversity, emailed district leaders, according to documents obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. To that end, the company was offering to arrange teacher training sessions with a North Carolina-based consultancy known as the Racial Equity Institute, a group "devoted to creating racially equitable organizations and systems."
"This would be great for teacher development and a great way to connect with the community," Jones said.
By August, teachers were learning that "perfectionism" is "white supremacy" and that "all our systems, institutions, and outcomes emanate from the racial hierarchy on which the United States was built."
Bentonville--the site of Walmart's corporate headquarters--wasn't alone.
In nearby Fayetteville, the district's public schools embarked on a five-year "equity plan" funded and designed by Walmart-funded groups, including a DEI "research institute" at the University of Arkansas. School leaders attended trainings on the "six tenets of critical race theory," learned that "systemic inequality = trauma," were drilled on the harmful effects of "microaggressions," and sat through PowerPoints on "intersectionality."
The district also implemented a "restorative justice" program--designed to combat the allegedly "disproportionate" discipline of black students--that discouraged teachers from breaking up fights and instructed them to sit on the floor with students to "dispel any sense of hierarchy."
This report is based on thousands of pages of documents obtained through public records requests submitted by families in Bentonville and Fayetteville. It reveals how the world's largest retailer is transforming schools in its hometown through grants, nonprofits, and corporate outreach, laundering its ideology as a kind of noblesse oblige.
The transformation highlights the tension between democracy and DEI, which--as one Walmart and Walton-funded diversity program, "TRUE," put it in a presentation to Fayetteville Public Schools--"sometimes must be imposed from the top down."
These initiatives might seem out of place in Northwest Arkansas, which voted overwhelmingly for former president Donald Trump. But Walmart, long a bogeyman for liberals concerned about the power of big business, has become just as progressive as the rest of corporate America, earning a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index in 2022.
The company is owned and controlled by the descendants of Sam Walton, who opened the first Walmart store in 1962. Once staunch Republicans with close ties to the national GOP, the Waltons have shifted left with each passing generation--and with the 2016 election, they began giving nearly as much to Democratic campaigns as to Republican ones.

Read the whole thing. Recall that former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson vetoed a bill to exclude boys and men from girl's and women's sports -- acting, of course, at the behest of his corporate donor Walmart.

And of course Asa Hutchinson is only running for president because he has the Woke Walton family's money to burn as they try to bribe their way into a Woke, DEI-supporting, gun-controlling, Transgender Extremist GOP.

One might even say that Asa Hutchinson is a "Managed Principal" and pawn of the "globalist corporatists," but then, there's a lot of that going around lately.

Wipe out the great fortunes, it is much harder to buy office or buy off officeholders.

There is a reason that prior political philosophers believed that large wealthy republics inevitably rotted within. Poor and small ones don't. The difference is inevitably the wealthy try to buy out the system to preserve wealth and wield power.

Madison's No. 10 worked for awhile as the states and nation were diverse in interests enough to ensure that the people more or less ruled over time. The development of an insular, self regarding social and economic class across all states is something he never considered.

Rules For Radicals can be used by our side if we focus on one thing at a time. Boycotts don't work because there are too many broke Corps. We need to focus on one or two weak companies a year.

If they are instituting discriminatory practices, then yes, they can and should be sued. If the Feds won't do it, pressure the state, if not the state, the county. I do agree though, even their nicest stores have a scummy feeling to me.

Until I'm free from debt, living on a small ranch, growing and raising as much of my own food as I can, I have to save money where I can. I don't tend to by and tell the wife to avoid buying the cheap Chinese shit from WalMart, their groceries are cheaper and get me what I need and closer to my goals than shopping at several other stores that are sometimes dollars more.

Walmart was the left's favorite punching bag before that. It was supposed to have been the harbinger of death for thousands of small mom & pop businesses. Numerous tales were spread of Walmart coming to a community, killing off all local competition, and then shutting down leaving entire small towns to die without even a local grocery store. The left loved to paint these scenarios as representative of capitalism. We defended the company by pointing out how much good it did for other small communities.

But when they vocally supported ObamaCare, I was done defending them. And I'm done defending other corporations. There's no point in defending tax breaks for entities that insist on allying with woke leftists.

My wife used to order our Christmas cards from the one on Columbus Blvd. I had the misfortune of going there to pick them up, one night. There was a terrible stench hanging over the waiting area. I asked a clerk about it, she told me that there was a dead rat (or 3, or 4, or 5) in the ceiling but maintenance hadn't bothered to clear them out. "We got used to it after awhile".

Three stories, Slope style escalators that lthe wheels of the cart locked in so you could go easily up or down and the check out was in the most disgusting produce section I have ever experienced. Smelled vile and everything looked half rotten. The whole store was filthy.
Fun little fact... China Wal-Mart was across the street from a highway on ramp and there were little stores and shops built under the ramp with overhead garage doors as the entrance.

The stores closest to me seem to make it a point of pride to hire the stupidest employees they can get. And around here, that's really saying something.

They built the old-style checkouts years ago before the self-checkout tech became available, and some MBAs in the main office in AR convinced everybody that those would be cheaper. (Yeah, right. Increased shoplifting, anyone?) Now it would cost too much to rip them all out -- though they may soon go full crazy and replace the old stuff with new, intrusive, camera-laden self-checkouts. Which I refuse to use. They are not paying me for my labor.

K-Mart was the first place I ever saw this effect, in the 70s. They only ever used more than half of the checkout lines around Christmas. I get it, checkers are expensive (they get more than minimum wage, which is over 15 bucks most places now) and you don't want them sitting around doing nothing for a lot of the time but still. Long lines annoy customers.

Like most retailers, Wal Mart has seen its glory days of widespread expansion and is now in the process of becoming K Mart. Who will be the newest colossus remains to be seen as even Amazon's selling juggernaut is showing signs of weakness.

Every retail empire eventually crumbles as part of the reason for expansion is forcing vendors to finance it via selling goods and getting the cash well before they pay their vendors--Wal Mart was infamous for forcing vulnerable vendors to accept payment even as late as 120 days after delivery.

Individual people (used to at least) would pick up stuff along side the road and throw it away just on their own, out of a sense of pride and beauty.

This is horrific. This is not a bad part of town, Union Station is, or used to be, a nice area.

Bear with me a moment. We need to define slavery first. As I understand it, slavery is compulsory labor with little to no compensation and the inability to refuse work except for the most extreme reasons (I can't lift that boss, my arm fell off).

There was an excellent (if easily abused) system called "indentured servitude" in the past in which someone is indentured to someone to work off a debt, and at the same time learn a trade (the classic book Johnny Tremain comes to mind). This was slavery as well, slavery like prisoners with a sunset: at this point you have paid off your debt and are free.

Its how and why you enslave people that can make it evil, not the institution its self.

Not really, public taxation is a complex issue especially when you include regulations-some of the costs can be easily shifted to others like consumers or investors. Some cannot easily be easily shifted. A perfect example would be that corporations can only pay maximum wages to senior staff at a 10-15 multiplier to the average worker's salary. Another might be that for corporations must offer a one to one stock option to workers for every stock option given to senior management. Another might be strictly applying discrimination employment and disability laws against big mega corp forcing them to adopt color blind hiring. Those impact senior management alone.

What he showed was that DEI has a huge cost against profits, and that companies focused on that lose track of their core business.

The formula for today's commercial ventures is to socialize costs but privatize benefits. That is true for immigration, taxing policy, and a whole host of other government initiatives.

Even gas and diesel taxes demonstrate this as typically interstates are torn up by heavy trucks, not car traffic but car owners pay proportionately more to keep the roads maintained than heavy trucks do. The heavy truck owners benefit along with corporations transporting goods but others pay proportionately more for it.

You were tied to the land as a serf--one could leave but it had serious consequences in such places (comparable punishment in the current US for leaving your mortgage would include poor credit rating might cause you to be unemployed, unable to rent,and so forth).
