Skipping the Trump thread in favor of BOOKZZZ!
Currently on Book 2 of Larry Correia's Saga of the Forgotten Warrior. Quite good epic fantasy with an Indian (dot) flavor to it. Lots of blood and gore, with some political intrigue thrown in as the Grand Inquisitor conspires to take over the world. Good stuff... I have another epic fantasy recommendation lined up for the Sunday Morning Book Thread... Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at April 21, 2023 05:08 PM (YIVH2) 22

I did not realize Iris Chang killed herself. Huh, what a shame. I was talking about this in Serbia/Poland/Ukraine yesterday and I think it does take a peculiar detached personality to research these kinds of things. That is, it takes one to know one.
It's a very deep Black Hole that many people, unwarned, simply can't handle. Anyway, I talked to some people yesterday about whether the most recent Ukraine conflict would disrupt archeological digs, some other shit and most importantly when I asked for a gun I didn't get one but was told if got to it, it was okay. I was removing a heavy-ass screen door, and of course it broke loose and I foolishly held on to it long enough to get pulled off the five-step concrete stoop to the sidewalk. I handled it like a frickin ninja! Hit the ground rolling, popped right back up on my feet. Best of all, didn't end up eating the door. Sawed a heavy limb off a tree, it swung and knocked the ladder out. That one I handled by landing flat on my back. Just lucky the 300-pound branch didn't land in my face. I've been enjoying (again) "A Nervous Splendor" by Frederic Morton, a view of Vienna in 1888-1889 around the Mayerling Incident. It looks not only at the Habsburg Court and Emperor Franz Josef and the doomed Crown Prince Rudolf, but also at others living in Vienna then: playwrights Theodor Herzl and Arthur Schnitzler, musicians Gustav Mahler, Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner and Hugo Wolf and the painter Gustav Klimt. A fascinating and enjoyable read. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at April 21, 2023 05:14 PM (MoZTd) 33

So far I've lost about 30lbs since the end of December. I did it entirely by counting calories and sticking to things that make me feel full.
Breakfast: Often oatmeal ~400 cal Lunch: Often bacon, hummus, boiled eggs, cajun spice ~500 cal Dinner: Meat (sausages, chicken, steak, burger), rice or quinoa, then some small snacks to finish out. ~900 cal Now that I'm over halfway to my goal weight, I've added bodyweight bootcamp style workouts. I wasn't worried about macros before, but now I'm trying to get ~200 grams of protein. I've change my lunch to cottage cheese, powdered peanut butter, and boiled eggs. My dinner is chicken, quinoa, and protein powder to make that easier. Posted by: bonhomme at April 21, 2023 05:20 PM (R38qh) 48

Socks do make a huge difference. I did a thing about 7 years ago for $9 Walmart Chinese sneakers with Dr. Scholls inserts. Those were the thing, but my feet sweat. So I need multiple pairs. Now I can't get those sneakers anymore and Converse isn't the same! I had like 20 pair of those sneakers and bought inserts as they degraded.
Now I'm kind of screwed: my feet sweat like crazy, always have, and rot anything I put them in. I have to change shoes every day. It's best sneaker-type stuff: ventilation and durable sneaker soles. Posted by: LenNeal at April 21, 2023 05:24 PM (pqfA/) 55

Actually, that skill at falling is not a bad thread idea. In Eastern Europe/Balkans, people know how to fall. It's true. This last time I fell heavily and now have a black bruise the size of a salad plate on my left side. Tried to come back from a meal, walked into a slippery sidewalk.

We've been planning a week long hike along the pacific crest trail beginning at an old rail stop called Beldon north to southern Oregon. That is what I want to do. Other friends think we should hit a remote branch section of Yuba river and sample for gold which involves very difficult hiking. (rushing snowmelt dislodges ancient placer and even new gold.)

Smartwool socks. Keep them fresh. Every 2-3 hours you might have to swap them out. Learned that from backcountry hunting. As soon as you notice them getting uncomfortable, stop and change them out for dry ones. Smartwool are my salvation, but I can't change them out three times in a shift. Hornfischer, tragically, died last year (maybe even 2021, forget), not an old guy. Not C19 either, think it was something congenital. I recall a now long gone commenter who said he had emailed Hornfischer about one of his books, and the author had invited him to lunch next time he was in town (in TX - Austin?). And he actually did have lunch with him. The ferocity and chaos of those naval battles is something that boggle the mind. Really the last episodes of their kind in history. Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors - for the equally mind-blowing valor and courage in another battle - is also a should-read for any Pacific theater aficionados. Or anyone who wants to see just what heights were reached in modern military history. Posted by: rhomboid at April 21, 2023 05:57 PM (OTzUX) 125

Posted by: ace at April 21, 2023 05:51 PM (iHBZj) --- Yeah, it's always a risk to introduce technology like that into a sequel. I get they wanted to make things more intense, but in the end they kind of turned the franchise into a violent cartoon, in part because of the bulletproof clothing. When JW fell 10 stories off a roof in JW 2 or 3 and then got up and walked away, that took me away from the suspension of disbelief. Of course, getting slammed by a car at the beginning of JW 2 and then continuing to fight also did that to an extent. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at April 21, 2023 05:58 PM (BpYfr) 126

An interesting part, actually a huge part, of GAINZZZ is how do I lose weight to show those gains?
I found out that the type of weight loss needed is - significant. Not ten or twenty pounds - try 30 pounds plus depending on the body fat measurement you started out with. 28 body fat for 190 pound man could mean that a 12% body fat measurement (minimum to show muscle) is going to mean you need to get down below 155 lbs to show off any semblance of muscle mass. That's - exhausting. It why Arnold used to say that the skinniest people he knew were body-builders. Physical gainzzz would be cardiovascular conditioning getting back to earlier standards, which means more intense cardio exercise that I've gotten away from - swimming, ocean swimming, rollerblading, long bike rides with hills. Fortunately weight's not really an issue, though I do carry a few extra pounds when I'm not exercising enough. I do resistance work but just for injury prevention, tone, conditioning, not weight (to add or remove). Now that the brutal, extended, unprecedented winter in San Diego has finally ended (it actually rained some, and was actually cool for more than a few weeks, unheard of), no excuses.

Posted by: Divide by Zero at April 21, 2023 06:04 PM (enJYY) Depends on what you define as "gainzz." To look ripped and muscled up as a man, you'll need to lift heavy in a split body part workout four or five days a week and drop a significant amount of weight to get that tight beach body girls adore. And you'll look super skinny until you take off your shirt and don a pair of tight shorts. If you want to be 'strong' - then left heavy and keep your weight up to build as much strength as you can. Your gut isn't getting better, but no one is messing with you at the bar. As a woman, I would suggest diet, small weights and light daily cardio work - avoid concrete - your bone density goes to shit with road work. Posted by: Boswell at April 21, 2023 06:14 PM (+Cgut) 162

I didn't know that "The Lost King" was about the search for Richard lll's grave and was from a book. I have thought that Richard lll was probably framed for the murder of the princes in the tower ever since reading the fine mystery story, The Daughter of Time" by Josephine Tey years ago.

Right now - I went from 192 in December to 155 in April - while doing a split body part workout five days a week.
I recommend for serious weight loss only one real meal a day - late afternoon/early evening - but include plenty of protein - no sugars and/or limited carbohydrates - avoid bread or breaded desserts. Post strength training can be supplemented with creatine and vitamin water. I suggest wide chins for a v-back as much as can be done. You want a ratio of waist to shoulders as a man that is 1 to 1.75 - or 2 or as close as you can get to that. Posted by: Boswell at April 21, 2023 06:27 PM (+Cgut) 181
That plus carnivore diet will have me jacked in no time.

I have lost 58 pounds in 7 months using Mounjaro. I know that some people don't agree with these new medications, but I cannot exercise due to Myasthenia and nothing else has worked for me in over 40 years of trying.
I also was diagnosed with Lipedema last Friday. The body fat in people with Lipedema does not respond to conventional diet and exercise. It can only be removed with liposuction performed by a surgeon who specializes in Lymphatic liposuction. I put up a post on Facebook about all of this (with before and after pictures), if anyone is interested. Sampling for gold would be fun. Should be epic snow melt. If I was gonna do it, I'd get some pipe, divert a creek and "hydraulic" down entire hillsides. Build a huge sluice box first. I'd be public enemy #1!

Just do the exercises as they're shown. I've been doing it about six weeks and I can feel how cut my muscles are getting under all this upholstery. Posted by: INCITEmarsh aka marchand chronicles at April 21, 2023 08:27 PM (wPWpr) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.0441 seconds. |
