To continue the discussion of the '70s: We were still relatively free. You could lose a job on a Friday, find another and be actually working by the next week -- no endless loops of Personnel to crawl through. A full-size bag of Doritos cost .69, a fifth of (admittedly cheap) bourbon could be had for $5. A new mid-range car like a Ford Maverick listed for $4000. A decent apartment could be had in a nice area for $200-250/month. And pre-toxic feminism, most young women had not grown up with that craziness and still liked men and wanted to be with them.
No, we didn't have cell phones or the 'Net, and cable TV was just becoming the norm. (I had HBO on my cable system in 1979, and paid about $8/month.) HBO, if you recall, was not 24 hours; it came on about 4 pm and ended its last film about 1 am. The 24-hour station was WTBS, which was still showing classic films, before Turner Classic Movies began. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 18, 2023 04:15 AM (omVj0) 9

Posted by: JQ at April 18, 2023 *** Cool stuff! On that same YT page is the official video for Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk," which oddly enough I don't remember from 1979 (?) when it was new. I guess my local Top 40 AM station didn't play it. I didn't discover that tune until many years later. AM? Yes. That was the only radio I had in my work van and in the '65 Mercury and the Ford Escort I drove between 1981 and 1991. I'd added an FM tuner to the Ford Maverick in '77, but that car was gone by '81. Yeah, we were relatively free -- compared to those before us. We are dinosaurs to young'uns now. We were actually allowed to hurt ourselves, with no Mommy hovering around to kiss it and make it better. The damned Urth Dey crap is Saturday. I just know Miss Linda is going to want to visit the local Buffalo Exchange store. Every year on Urth Dey they have a sidewalk sale with big discounts. The trouble is, April here is a hellscape already, and the store is located on the sunny side of the street. So standing there waiting for her to look at every item in every tub or on every rack is horrifying. Last year I walked up to the local library and hung out for an hour.
(And they don't even open until 11 am. In a hot climate sensible people would insist stores open early so they can run errands early, to avoid the heat. It's insane.) So I'm watching National Geographic last night, 'The Secret Hitler Tapes' or something like that. One thing they kept repeating was how Hitler wanted to revoke the Versailles Treaty and Make Germany Great Again. It was effin' obvious, that propaganda ploy. Godwin's Law invoked. Trump is Hitler and his MAGAites are NAZIs. At the end, the credits listed as contributors CNN and VICE News. An unintended irony, I'm sure, was their extended coverage of Leni Riefenstahl and her award-winning 'documentary' 'Triumph of the Will'.

-- Depends on what you're asking. The vaccine does nothing, so that's a non-starter. If you've got the sniffles stay home and don't sneeze on folks or share drinks with other people, same as people knew to do for 100 years before 2020. If you don't want to visit the in-laws the "I'm not vaccinated" is a darn good excuse, though. I'm more and more confident that not treating a bad cold was the deaths we saw with COVID in 2020-2021. Remember when there were only five or so flu deaths that year? They went somewhere. Doctors weren't allowed to treat, so folks died. Ta-dah! COVID deaths. B) if it were true, it's likely due to "black and brown" Americans disproportionately living in densely populated areas C) and if *that* is true, the only fair solution is either forced relocation of minorities (Andrew Jackson was after all the founder of their party), or, some form of elaborate Bussing scheme to relocate minorities and prevent them from driving in congested areas.... Starting on May 1st, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will offer discounted mortgage rates to prospective home buyers with “riskier credit backgrounds” (meaning people with poor credit ratings) to enable them to qualify for a mortgage. But that will generate more losses in the system and that money will have to be made up somehow. So people holding lower-cost mortgages because they have a good credit rating will be charged more, leading to their monthly mortgage payments going up.

"It's weird to realize how many people want a king."
Read what the Israelites demanded from the prophet Samuel. They gave their reasons: primarily because wanted to be like all the other nations, and the previous system was getting corrupt. They believed that by removing a transcendent moral code and replacing it with a human god (because they naturally assumed that their future leadership would be benevolent and humble) that they would be better off. Look at the hagiographies that are delivered in social media for Biden. They truly believe he is kind, benevolent, wise, honest, honorable and fair. Then remind them that their previous "king" was "literally Hitler" and the McGOP before was also "literally Hitler" - they still want a king. Glenn Beck had some talk show host who "jogged along the railroad" right-of-way and somehow got killed by a train. That didn't settle right because railroads deliberately use hard edged rocks for settling the rail beds. Also trains are not stealth vehicles. It was suicide. IIRC it's illegal to ride "non-powered" vehicles on some roads, like the Interstates. Bicycles, horses.... things that can't maintain the posted speed limits.
I'm sure that applies elsewhere too. Might have to look that one up. I honestly don't care if they ride. I do care if I'm in a ditch avoiding one, or in litigation after mowing one down. Posted by: Martini Farmer at April 18, 2023 07:37 AM (Q4IgG) 221
QR codes are just a bit of text, sliced up into a grid of dots with other dots (mostly squares) acting as the scaffold. It's just mostly long enough to hold a URL
It's the same as NFTs. All those do is hold a URL (the 'Token' in question), as well as track 'ownership'. Except if the DNS name is compromised (transferred, lapsed, bought-out), well, your URL is Jack Schitt. Given Internet ADHD, how many gravesites will have URLS that are as dead as those below them? Or worse, end up in a redirect storm to malware or objectionable stuff? Posted by: Another Anon at April 18, 2023 07:39 AM (hwP7U) 222
217 In my Ohio home town the map was spider webbed with rail right of way due to all the steel mills. We had one bordering our back yard, going through the middle of the block. Most were moving slow, preparing to enter a mill, and as kids we weren't above hitching a ride for a block or two. We did learn a hard cold fact. "Respect the train".

I'm sure that applies elsewhere too. Might have to look that one up. - Illegal is only what law enforcement decides is illegal at the time. Sad but true. Go to the beach and watch 10 year olds driving golf carts up and down the street without anyone saying a word. Then watch as they arrest a man driving the same as the 10 year olds for a DUI on the same streets and driving an identical golf cart. It has a lot to do with ownership. Limited access freeways are almost always paid through state/fed taxes or tolls. The local roads are paid by general revenue: fees, property and sales tax, licensing, etc. (not your fuel tax). Its sort of hard to tell a taxpayer of local taxes that he can't use the local road. Not so about fuel tax underwritten roads. Posted by: Reuben Hick at April 18, 2023 07:41 AM (YXHzG) 226
