Funny thing. People forget how to park when they use the parking assist all the time. They get a rental without and it's a laugh show. Or, people just can't park, period.
We used to sit in the window in college and watch students try to parallel park. Never not funny. Posted by: nurse ratched at April 16, 2023 02:05 PM (U2p+3) 4

If the car manufacturers offered onboard storage for camera data, expect that data to be uploaded to that car maker's 'Cloud' before you can access it. Oh, and the contract you signed will no doubt state that the car makers "Owns" those images. Posted by: gastorgrab at April 16, 2023 02:10 PM (oOqDs) 9

In some states it is illegal to record without mutual consent (iirc, either one party or two party consent) ... or at least informing the other person you are recording them.
That may not apply to cameras without audio, idk. Posted by: illiniwek at April 16, 2023 02:11 PM (Cus5s) 14

But why aren't cars equipped with hard drives that store the data already being provided by the onboard cameras? Why do we have to buy and install aftermarket stuff that duplicates the equipment already installed in the car?
Oh, that's easy. The installed electronics stores info for other organization's use, not ours. They coerce us to duplicate buy so that we think we will have control over our own data. Posted by: Tonypete at April 16, 2023 02:14 PM (qoGsy) 18

Given the horrific security automobile electronics have currently I wouldn't trust them to turn on the lights. Seriously. Hacking the ignition, brake system, etc. and the issues have been known for YEARS and not fixed because automakers understand computers like I understand tire manufacturing, i.e. not at all. Don't give them ideas.

My FWP for the day: At the self-checkout stations today at the grocery (don't ask) when processing the bananas, the machine wouldn't scan the bar code, and made me enter it by number pad. Then, the ****ing machine demanded to know what the tare weight of the packaging was.
Excuse me? How many people out of 100 even know what tare weight is? Once again, an application designed by some introverted, non-socialized nerd that had been locked up in a cubicle for 10 years and thus, never had any contact with a customer to understand their needs. When our appliance warranties are due to expire we sign them up for the utilities program. This has saved us a lot of money. The water company also sells a very inexpensive insurance for the line leading to the sewer. I know someone who had to replace theirs and it was over 25k. We pay less that 200 per year for that, and we figured that our house is getting the right age to need that service.

Masking tape. WTFFF with almost all of these cameras? Rear parking's the only one that makes some sense (and that's quite dispensable too except in huge trucks).
Russian dash-cams are part of their insurance situation (and provide free entertainment for the globe). Masking tape. Got plenty, usually staple or glue targets to backers at the range. Laptop cameras have been taped since they came out. Posted by: rhomboid at April 16, 2023 02:30 PM (OTzUX) 39

Ciampino's Rescue kitties NOW LIVE Streaming!!! https://www.twitch.tv/kittenwatch WE HAVE 4 KITTENS FROM SCARLET, THE GRAY, 2 black and 2 gray tabbies. She had them under the bed and we observed her dragging one of them by its ass, to behind the blue tub. Then after a while she sat in the middle of the room looking very confused as to what to do next, (this is her first litter). She then appeared to abandon the 3 under the bed. We discovered she wasn't doing much with the solitary one either. We bought a couple of "baby" bottles and a can of powdered formula just in case. Now we've put them all together behind the blue tub and it looks as if she might be nursing. Phew! Don't know if she has milk though. Will monitor very closely. Any 'kitten/bad mother' tips welcome. How adorable. You think.that your car can't record and store - available to the "proper authorities" (and any low-level peeping tom at the car company), of course) the output of anything built into the vehicle. It's already recording speed, engine rpm, gear position, steering input, air temp, coolant temp, oil temp, oil pressure, alternator voltage and current, accelerometer readings, brake pedal position, brake hydraulic pressure, GPS position and route settings, radio station and volume, etc, etc, etc. But, because of our government's deep respect for privacy, the camera output is off limits. I will be looking for a car in the future. Mine is on 375,000 miles. It cannot run forever, but what terrifies me the most is the absolute number of gadgets on the new cars.
Case in point. I rented a car for vacation a while back. Not to get started on the cameras on it on all 4 sides, but the headlights would follow the steering wheel. Nice I guess, but the number of moving parts is just boggling. I have a Honda Van and it had the side doors you could open and close yourself. It was great until the cables broke. Then it was 1000.00 to fix. I just had the cables disconnected because do you spend that much to fix it, or do you save that for a major repair/new car. The next car I get will have as few buttons as possible. Posted by: Picric at April 16, 2023 03:26 PM (13tTk) 155

Clean-up time for me. Smashed the old broken toilet into small pieces, and loaded it in the wheelie bin, along with the old cast iron waste pipe. Will run a new ABS waste pipe. I had plans to replace the fresh water supply pipe to the cistern as well, and found I cannot. The cistern supply is 1/2" galvanized pipe teed right off the incoming supply line from the meter to the house. So I will run a Pex line from the toilet area, under the raised floor to the adjoining closet where the water heater lives, and just keep it in reserve.
Also cut up a mess of scrap wood, and enhanced my wood pile. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 16, 2023 03:43 PM (tkR6S) 176

My current and ongoing first world problem: I subscribe to YouTube TV and you have to pick a home region for your local channels (mine is El Paso, TX) which also affects a number of shows I record with the DVR feature. If you are out of region you can't watch them.
Of course they use your IP address to figure out where you are located, and because the universe is perverse, CenturyLink reports me as being in Albuquerque. This creates a lot of hilarity and repeated poking at the current location in the cell phone app until updates and the notifies all the other devices. This could be avoided if YouTube TV would let you override this behavior but that would make to much sense. In other news, provided you are fan, Better Call Saul Season 6 hits Netflix on Tuesday. I picked up and left Seattle/WA for ABQ/Las Cruces/NM without knowing anyone. It is like stepping into thin air - air can be quite supportive. We don't even need to discuss the pay differential - this is lovely place to set up shop and not work. I thought I would miss Puget Sound and the air; here we have an ocean of desert and that is something substantial. NM, especially north of ABQ has some of the most perfect air and visual clarity I have ever experienced. As for mountains NM has that covered in spades. I never thought I would leave Seattle but events pushed me out. Now I can't see any reason to return. NM is the inverse of WA and if you like one you are prime to like the other. McConnell suffered a concussion and fractured ribs due to his fall. His office put out a statement that he was looking forward to returning to work soon and wasn't going to retire. Whether he's got brain damage is debatable, but apparently not a disqualifying issue to remain in Congress.
While I think McConnell's a worthless piece of shit the possibility of a vacant Senate seat while the Kentucky governor pisses all over the law that says he has to pick a Republican isn't appealing. The Democrats have the ability to stage all sorts of dumbfuckery as it is... why make it easier. He can "work" remotely just like DiFi and the lump monster until things are sorted out. Even if that takes years. Posted by: Martini Farmer at April 16, 2023 04:39 PM (Q4IgG) 254
People should stay where they are home. Defend your home from the true infidels. But no whinging allowed. Texas rules.

I have interacted with Mitch since 2003. Not the brightest bulb, doubtless slowing with age. He should go home, but he hasn't one. His Louisville is of the DiMaggio era.

For those morons that have met us both in person, you know we look like complete opposites. Me tall, she short, me ugly, she attractive.
But on the issue of "leaving Seattle?" Nah, we're both natives and have our family histories in this region. The geographic beauty is stunning. Not going to leave, no matter how bad. Yes, there are really only two outcomes: the Leftists running things get some wisdom and realize they have to change, or, the famous sentence by the young boy in the movie "The Sixth Sense". Because there is one simple truth: That which cannot sustain, will not. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg ------ May you and Nurse be protected by the Lord and kept safe from the decline all around you. To continue, some will stay in place, others will leave and shake the dust off their feet. Neither occurrence should be prejudged by others lacking insight into the lives of others.
Those in apparent safe places should also consider offering shelter if necessary to loved ones and friends if able behind enemy lines. Posted by: whig at April 16, 2023 04:49 PM (EKz4W) 258
I hadn't heard the brain damage part, but I knew he was messed up. Old men fear falls for a reason.

Mitch may be hanging on until a new GOP governor takes office in Jan 2024. Posted by: whig at April 16, 2023 04:52 PM (EKz4W) 260

Finally an easy question that I can answer - you don't want that data downloadable by the authorities, or the car manufacturer, or both. You want to control that data and whether or not you want to make it available to TPTB.

I was a police officer who was a crash reconstruction expert, but retired ten years ago. I can tell you that so many things in your car record information, both temporarily and permanently. In most cases we did not require a search warrant to take and download (for instance) airbag modules. These provided information about the movement of your car such as speed, braking, and a plethora of other info to be used in court. There is also a PCM (primary control module) that has a great deal more info. So as one of the commenters said " do you really want your every move recorded" don't make it easy for them. Get a cheap after market because to my knowledge that will require a warrant.

We thought oh Top Gun had to have taught them a lesson. No apparently not. I used to think tapeworms even turn away from pain. They aren't even that smart.
Posted by: blaster at April 16, 2023 01:31 PM There are no lessons to be taught or learned for the Marxist Left pushing this stuff. They are not doing it to try to make money. They are doing it to force their agenda on the population. And they have the financial backing of major institutions which want this stuff pushed. Check into CEI, which is funded by George Soros. And ESG scores. All of this is pushed into every institution and every corporation in the Western world. This is not going to stop based on the average person rejecting it. This is going to continue to be forced onto the masses. We're living in a worldwide reeducation camp. Governments, mass media, social media, schools, universities, Hollywood, music industry, sports leagues, everything. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at April 16, 2023 08:08 PM (Do5/p) 265
It's the new American Way. Build something (or rather, have it built in China) CHEAP and it will force someone to buy add-ons or new products in the near future.
A prime example: I had a central heating and cooling unit in my house that started having problems after 4 years and quit working about year 8. This was when my house wasn't even 10 years old yet. When speaking with the older gentleman who attempted to repair it, he opened my eyes to the scam that is currently used to fleece U.S. consumers. "My grandad was in this business and back when he was doing this, in the 60's and 70's, they built these units to last 30 years or more. Now, you're lucky if you get 10 years out of them, because they want you to buy another one." His words, not mine. After that, I put in window AC's in my house and got space heaters for the winter and have never looked back. The window units and heaters STILL are working fine. So the lesson here is simple. Nothing of quality is made anymore. Almost everything is made for the mighty dollar. Posted by: Tracy at April 16, 2023 10:37 PM (e6KBG) 266
