Out Of Touch; Ignorant; Arrogant...Our Elites Have Been Channeling Pauline Kael For Two Generations

Whether she said exactly this is debatable, but the sentiment perfectly encapsulates the vast divide between America and those who would rule us.

I can’t believe Nixon won. I don't know anyone who voted for him.

They don't know America or Americans, they don't travel among us, they don't eat the same food, they don't wear the same clothes, and they certainly don't watch the same movies!

marioreviews.jpg

But they are confident that we are wrong! We have lowbrow taste in food and clothing and recreation and movies. How else would we and our children actually enjoy a movie without overt political, social, and cultural messages?

The idea that a movie's primary function is to entertain is lost on the critics and pundits on the left, who have bemoaned every successful pop-culture entry that doesn't shove transgenderism, homosexuality, climate change, racism, sexism, and a host of their other pet messages down our throats.

There are two simple reasons for this. The first is glaringly obvious...they don't have any idea what Americans enjoy. The second is also clear...these people are no fun. Everything in their world is seen through the prism of leftist politics and culture, and that is a miserable view.

Even when conservatives demonstrate, we have more humor and perspective than the left and its lunatic base that is increasingly dominant today. Just look at one of their protests...angry faces, screaming and yelling and often violent reactions to whatever imagined provocation precipitated the protest.

Now take a look at the other side of the coin. Hell...January 6th was not violent! And if you have seen a pro-life march or demonstration the odds are overwhelming that it is a bunch of people strolling along, some with their kids, and the thought of yelling and screaming and being angry never occurs to most of them.

The huge disparity between the opinions of the pinch-faced scolds in the media and the American audience of The Super Mario Brothers Movie is a perfect reflection of the larger schism in our society...the perpetually angry vs. the normies. They are, in the main, miserable people who worry so much about the image they project via their virtue-signalling nastiness that they forget to have a life with any pleasure.

Their talismans are their hair, their addresses, their snarky and shallow comments, their smug derision when referring to anyone not of their tribe. And the most pathetic part of their entire existence is their ignorance of great swathes of their world. They have almost literally no idea how it runs, how they are fed and clothed and cooled and warmed and moved about. But they are confident that their lives are of greater worth than the great unwashed in the flyover states who actually do all of the things that run modern society.

They are wrong. And if the predictions of some intelligent and perceptive people come true, they will be confronted by that stark reality across the barricades, or at the gates of a reeducation camp, or in a ditch somewhere.

19 Party in Chicago!

Hundreds of teenagers flooded into Downtown Chicago on Saturday night, smashing car windows, trying to get into Millennium Park, and prompting a major police response. At least one person in a car was attacked.

Shots were fired near the corner of Madison and Michigan, and FOX 32 Chicago decided that it was unsafe to keep our news crew on the scene.

Two teens were wounded by gunfire in the crowds in the first block of East Washington Street. A 16 and 17-year-old boy were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition with gunshot wounds.

They also tried to break into the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Democratic convention in Chicago next year is going to be LIT!

I've been thinking about this lately. In a society where laws are written in such a capricious manner, ignored by "the proper groups", and enforcement is based on politics and race, but not...you know...on the law, just what kind of power are we talking about?
I suspect the left isn't nearly as powerful as they think they are outside urban centers and campuses. And I suspect the right has far more power than they think they do, but are afraid to wield it.

21 Kael was actually being somewhat self-aware, acknowledging what a bubble she lived in, and at the same time hinting at distaste for those outside it. The nearest verified quote I know of:

60 I haven't seen these two movies:

"The Pope's Exorcist" and "Nefarious"

so I don't know if they're actually any good but the same divide between Critics and the Movie Going Public exists for them.

The reason boils down to the fact that both movies are centered around Christianity, and the critics can't stand that idea.

The movies may suck but the critics take themselves straight out of the game as honest brokers with their religious hatred and bigotry.

61 Well said, CBD. The expression "they hate us cuz they ain't us" comes to mind. That works in multiple directions. I think Hillary's use of "deplorables" toward Trump supporters was the most genuinely honest thing she's ever said. She truly believes it. And she said without a single bit of trepidation.

Nope, you aren't. The left is about 25 percent or so of the population and that has not changed much in decades. The right fluctuates between 35-40 percent. The remainder fluctuates but are not ideological in thinking left/right but more as to what opinions get me through the day at my job and society.

Even the left and right while somewhat ideological have softer majorities. You only get strict ideological thinking from about 10-15 percent of the population that have definite cause-effect relationships posited by the tenets of whatever theory they believe reflects reality.

78 This is not a recent phenomenon. In the late '60s, I attended college in Nebraska and spent summers at home in New Jersey. The questions I was asked about Nebraska and central America in general by kids my age were incredibly stupid and ignorant.
Years later, I owned a bookstore in Nebraska. After a couple of years, I came to the conclusion that the publishing industry honestly believed there was no civilization west of the Hudson. Everything -- content, story ideas, even prices -- was geared to Manhattan. My biggest bitch was that publishers seemed to price books to the cost of lunch in Manhattan. I kept trying to explain that people in Omaha could buy a weeks worth of lunches for the price of a single lunch in Manhattan.

91 After using Covid-19 voting rules, the authoritarian left took over all of the swing states. They then changed the voting rules so they can never lose.
In 2024, the tech oligarchs will spend more than $1 billion on registering the "right" people to vote, shipping out their ballots, harvesting their ballots, and correcting all the voting errors. The DNC is going to run Potato Joe because they know it doesn't matter, just like Fetterman in PA. It would take a voting miracle to overcome all of the ballot harvesting.

98 There are two simple reasons for this. The first is glaringly obvious...they don't have any idea what Americans enjoy. The second is also clear...these people are no fun. Everything in their world is seen through the prism of leftist politics and culture, and that is a miserable view.

There's a third, and most important, reason. Everything is an opportunity to normalize the society they want. Every piece of media is crammed full of wokeness showing how they want society, not reflecting reality, because they know it affects normies and culture over time by shifting the Overton window, little by little.

I suspect the left isn't nearly as powerful as they think they are outside urban centers and campuses. And I suspect the right has far more power than they think they do, but are afraid to wield it.

I think you're pretty much right. The left controls things on paper, but thats it, and in the end none of it is of any value. They don't control the mechanicals. They can tell you what car to build, but they can't build a car. They can tell you what house to build, but they can't build a house. They are destroyers, not creators. Nothing of real value anyway. They can create movies, art, music, etc, but that isn't getting you to the moon. They have a house of cards, and it can be crushed very easy, because they didn't even make the frigging cards.

The lefts almost complete control of the media and their ability to control the narrative immensely powerful but also tissue thin. When Daniel Ellsberg released the Pentagon Papers the media heralded him as a national hero because they hated the Vietnam War and Ellsberg shared much of their political philosophy.

Contrast that with the kid who just got arrested for releasing classified documents that show among other things that there were 3 more Chinese spy balloons that our government hid from us and they have been lying about the Ukraine war all along. The media barely mentions any of that and they want the kid crucified along with Assange who knows exactly who hacked the DNC.

152 Meanwhile, private school enrollment has never been higher.

It literally skyrocketed during the lockdowns. Parents saw the "quality" and kind of education their kids were getting. Most parents figured school was just like when they went, and those craAAaazy right wingers going on about bad stuff and poor education were just radicals who hated books.

Now they know, and tens of millions have yanked their kids out of schools.

153 The critics having terrible taste is nothing new. When I was wee lad my father would look at the newspaper and see what the critics hated and we would go to that movie. I loved those movies. Most had strong male leads (John Wayne) and didn't push any socialist agenda.

If I still went to movies, that would be how I chose which one to waste money on.

165 @135 illiniwek-this is difficult part. The left does control things. They’ve accrued a lot of power they’re not so easily going to let go of. They have law enforcement and most important they have the streets and a well organized “army” that is protected. How far that protection extends outside their turf, that’ll remain to be seen. We’re seeing things start to creep up on us in red states like Tennessee and Texas. Their blue enclaves in these states are concerning and a cancer they’ll do their best to spread. The only way we could show up to any March or protest is in overwhelming numbers to the point that it would give the left pause in committing acts of violence on us and maybe force law enforcement to step so it doesn’t get out of hand.

173 The second is also clear...these people are no fun. Everything in their world is seen through the prism of leftist politics and culture, and that is a miserable view.

While it is a miserable view and makes for a miserable life, it also is a good thing for them with regards to taking over the country's institutions, corporations and culture. Which they have.

The Marxist Left for the past few decades has focused every part of the lives on taking over every institution in the country and turning it into their utopian worldview through CRT, BLM, DIE, ESG, CEI, LGBT+ policies. And they have succeeded.

Meanwhile, the right has been trying to live their lives by working jobs, getting married and raising families, enjoying vacations and sports, etc. Politics does not rule the lives of the average person. Which is good for enjoying life, but bad for being able to defeat the Marxist Left.

With the Marxist Left taking control of everything in the country, the average person is now faced with having to do what the Left has done for decades... making politics and culture the focus of every part of their lives to return the country to sanity, if possible.

Look, I get what you mean but consider the position of everyone. How do we resist? Take to the streets? That solves nothing. Sign a petition? Congress ignores it. Vote? The elections are rigged. Run for office? See above.

People aren't lacking will, except the will to erupt in violence and Tumbrels over what is going on because that's the only short-term solution and people do not desire to loot, burn, and kill over tranny bathrooms. 196 Remember the course of the French Revolution, a prior example of post-whateverist Rousseau thinking run amok. First it purged the inept aristocracy, then it purged a bunch of normies caught up in the mix, then it purged itself (along with a bunch more normies), then a military genius took advantage of the power vacuum for some personal rule, then the whole thing fell apart and the old ways came back.

Not counting the wars, most of the ultraviolence was contained to Paris, a couple of allied cities, and a couple of dissident regions whose local leaders misjudged the situation on the ground. IIRC one of the border territories was staunchly royalist the whole way through, and got away with it because it was rural and remote.

Another tool of Our Betters at the Federal and Blue State/City levels is un-equal application of laws. Any non-leftist who vociferously peacefully protests is likely to be hammered, legally. Unlike Leftists protesting peacefully or by rioting. The IRS is always ready go after Enemies of the State. Not so for Clintons, Bidens, and all other members of the Dem Party and Deep State (BIRM).

This is something to think about before doing anything that seriously bothers Our Betters, especially if you have a family, small business, or are living paycheck to paycheck. Meanwhile, the Leftist protests armies are mostly single, young, maybe employed, and know the rules of the game - they will not be arrested, let alone prosecuted, for pretty much anything up to murder.

Politics is merely the nexus of culture, economics, and psychology. Even economics is mostly behavioral psychology mercantilized. Show me What your values are and I'll tell you what you vote for. And when you hate the results, they'll stew and throw a hiss fit about how they meant well and it's your fault and you just need to indulge their next demand they refuse to acknowledge they contradicted themselves against five minutes ago.

Actually, the sin is indulging anger, not the anger itself. An emotion is not a sin. What you do with it might be.

And righteous anger that is channeled to righting the wrong that caused it is not a sin, any more than killing someone to protect innocent life is not a sin.

God gets it, not to worry.

It's most likely a product of my Protestantism, but I honestly feel like I can see the demonic influence in things.

It doesn't have to be me seeing something, wondering if it's good or not, running to Scripture to confirm it, seeking varying views of the Scriptural perspective, and then applying that.

Some things I know to be demonic intrinsically, because of the influence of the Holy Spirit.

That thread also raised another good point, the difference between on-paper control and in-the-streets control. Another salient case study is Afghanistan. We were large and in charge in Kabul and a few bases, or so we told ourselves. 239 Well, today is the first full day of a nuclear-free Germany, after they closed down their last three nuclear plants yesterday. I'd have more sympathy for the German economy buckling under the weight of high energy prices, but this bit is entirely self-inflicted.

Posted by: The ARC of History! at April 16, 2023 12:08 PM

Serious question... is it actually self-inflicted? Did the majority of German citizens actually vote for this? Or, like in Canada and the USA and Western nations all across the world, has the voting process been rigged and elections stolen so that tyrannical leaders can force these policies on the citizens?

The same goes for "blue" cities and states here in the USA. Are those cities' and states' electorates actually voting Democrat or are the elections rigged? 2016 showed that Michigan and Pennsylvania, without cheating, are toss-up states, not deep blue as once thought. In 2020, the results showed Michigan and Pennsylvania went easily to Biden and 2022 showed Whitmer easily won. But were those the actual results? Did Michiganders actually vote that way? Can we actually call all the damage Whitmer will now cause "self-inflicted" by Michiganders?

That's a cornerstone of their plan.

246 The expression "they hate us cuz they ain't us" comes to mind. That works in multiple directions. Usually it's some smug winning team (sports, politics, etc) saying that in a condescending way about those on the non-winning side. But I think it genuinely applies in the thinking of the coastal elites and their leftist base towards middle America, normies, deplorables, etc.

Posted by: Doof at April 16, 2023 12:28 PM (zddNi)

I think this attitude applies to many Americans in general, especially when it comes to non-Americans criticizing the USA. The general attitude is "they just hate America, because we're better than them".

And it also applies to people of almost every background or race or ideology or religion when it comes to insignificant things like you mention... sports, politics, religion, what country/state/city in which one lives, favorite foods, favorite bands/music, favorite pizza, favorite movies, etc. Seems like so many people nowadays find any way possible to divide each another into 'us vs. them'.

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at April 16, 2023 03:48 PM (Do5/p)

247 Even the left and right while somewhat ideological have softer majorities. You only get strict ideological thinking from about 10-15 percent of the population that have definite cause-effect relationships posited by the tenets of whatever theory they believe reflects reality.

Posted by: whig at April 16, 2023 12:29 PM

The problem is that the ideological makeup of the nation/electorate no longer matters when the ideological makeup of everyone in a position of power/influence in every institution in the nation is 99% Marxist Left.

Now that rigged and stolen elections are the norm, with zero consequences for them, those in power do not have to worry themselves of the ideological makeup of the electorate.

The same goes for institutions and corporations with regards to customers. Don't have to worry about appealing to the most customers for the most profit when the institution/corporation is propped up by ESG and CEI donations to push Marxist Left policies/narratives.

Most critics punish idiosyncrasy and reward conformity. More often than not, they'll praise "entertaining" movies and pan genuinely challenging ones.

Mandatory viewing in schools should be the entire series of "Modern Marvels", especially the very early seasons from the 1990s. They go into great detail explaining how things are made that we all take for granted. From roads to bridges to tunnels to dams to skyscrapers to eggs to rice to oil to plastics to metals to vaccines, etc. Just an invaluable series. 20 seasons, 181 total episodes. There is even one about a topic that has been discussed here before, The Tennessee Valley Authority. S2Ep3.

In addition, the series "Impossible Engineering" goes into great detail explaining the engineering principles -- modern and older strategies from which the modern ones were based -- that went into designing and developing and building everything we take for granted today.

I get that, and it heartens our side, which is at least something. BUT you're overlooking that as long as the Democrats control the FBI, cops and the army, we don't have a chance. All we can do is vote--and in 2020 you saw how neatly the Dems defeated that.

There are no lessons to be taught or learned for the Marxist Left pushing this stuff. They are not doing it to try to make money. They are doing it to force their agenda on the population. And they have the financial backing of major institutions which want this stuff pushed. Check into CEI, which is funded by George Soros. And ESG scores. All of this is pushed into every institution and every corporation in the Western world.

This is not going to stop based on the average person rejecting it. This is going to continue to be forced onto the masses. We're living in a worldwide reeducation camp. Governments, mass media, social media, schools, universities, Hollywood, music industry, sports leagues, everything.
