Daily Tech News 14 April 2023

Top Story

  • The project at work that has been eating all my time lately is winding down now, leaving me only 200% busy instead of 500%.

  • The hackers who hit Western Digital got away with 10TB of data. (Tech Crunch)

Which is smaller than my Steam library, so it rather depends on what's in there.

They're asking for at least $10 million in ransom not to release it to the public. I doubt they're going to get a penny.

Tech News

  • A suspect has been arrested in the San Francisco murder of Cash App founder Bob Lee. (Mission Local)

Nima Momeni is apparently another tech executive and knew Lee, and they were seen together on the night of the killing.

Much has been made about this murder and San Francisco's descent into chaos under the policies of communist nutcases, and now that a suspect has been arrested the media are trying to pretend that this means that San Francisco is somehow not descending into chaos.

Hey, we arrested one guy for one crime. That means that everything is okay.

  • Nvidia's RTX 4070 is here, and at least in Australia they killed it on pricing.

That is, the pricing killed it. Between A$1100 and A$1250, when it needed to be under A$1000.

At the high end it's only $100 cheaper than a 4070 Ti, and just $50 cheaper than the currently discounted models of AMD's Radeon 7900 XT, a much more capable card.

The 4070 is a compact and well-designed two-slot card - if you can get the Nvidia Founder's Edition, which we can't here. Almost all the available cards are much larger and hideously ugly. The hold-out in that trend is Inno3D, not a leading brand, but they've come up with some reasonably nice two-slot designs, and a choice of black/silver and white/silver if you want to match your case. They have a two-slot 4070 Ti in the same black/silver design as well.

Still undecided which way to go here. The 20GB 7900 XT is very competitive against anything Nvidia has right now unless you specifically want to play games with ray tracing, or run code that uses the Cuda compute API. On the other hand, I'd probably be just fine with a 6700 at one third the price.

  • The Radeon 6800 and 6800 XT have received price cuts to compete with the 4070 if you can find them which I can't. (Tom's Hardware)

The Radeon 6800, 6800 XT, and 6900 XT have ceased to exist in Australia. I can get a not entirely terrible deal on a 6800 if I want to bother importing it from the US which I don't.

Again the 6700 sings its siren song, before that too disappears.

  • On the other hand, the dirt-cheap pricing on the 4TB Team MP34 has reached these shores, so I can buy it from a local retailer (that is, within a day's travel of New House City) instead of importing from the US.

I plan on getting at least five of these for my new PCs; it's less than half the price of equivalent drives from only a year ago, and it's a proper TLC model with DRAM cache, not a DRAMless QLC model like the Crucial P3, the only competition it has in its price range.

Disclaimer: It doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of sardines in this crazy world.

8 Morning, all! It's Friday at last!

Thanks to Buck for stepping in as ONT understudy! He asked about our performing careers, if any.

My career in theatre was long and checkered. I had the title role in my first high school play, "Curse You, Jack Dalton," which was not a Western but a comic one-act in the style of 1900s mellerdrammers. We did a well-received version of Guys and Dolls (I was Nathan Detroit). In college I did lots of one-act lab theatre shows, directed one, played the cop who gets attacked by Jonathan for saying he looked like Boris Karloff in Arsenic and Old Lace, etc. I wasn't getting the big roles even in college. So I drifted into radio and did much better. (A story for another day, kiddies.)

I loved doing shows. Looking back, I guess I wasn't very good, not B'way or H'wood level, but it gave me confidence and the ability to handle social situations that nothing else could

9 And lemme tell ya . . . if I hadn't had a girlfriend/fiancee, the girl who became Mrs. Wolfus No. 1, I could have had a *lot* of happy action with the aspiring actresses in my college classes and shows. Hot girls, and very pleased to get attention from straight guys instead of being "gal-pals" with gay men. This was the early to mid-'70s, mind you. Though Women's Lib was just getting started, most of the girls had not grown up under its poisonous influence, and *still liked guys*.

39 I dreamed last night that I was living where it snowed. There was rain when I went into the restaurant -- for some reason it seemed like an Applebee's -- and when I came out it was night and had snowed so much that my car had mounds of it all around. The car was sort of in a grave made of snow with water around it up to the lower edge of the windows. Still, I opened the door and got inside, and somehow it was completely dry; and the engine started up, ran roughly for a moment, and was fine. Seemed to be a silver C-Class Mercedes, the model that was out around 2001 -- one I've never owned or driven.

I started to drive someplace, knowing the snow was atop ice and very dangerous . . . and then I woke up.

These include Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes, John Locke’s Two Treatises of Government, and Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France, as well as works by Thomas Carlyle and Adam Smith. Elsewhere RICU warns that radicalisation could occur from books by authors including C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Aldous Huxley, and Joseph Conrad. Cause nothing says 'Islamic lands' like the silencing of all other calls to worship besides the call to the prayer mat five times per day.

151 Honestly, if you need something nVidia and the 4070 is pushing the 7900 XT price, I'd price out used 3090 cards and see what they're doing.

On ray tracing, I'd really take a look at the specific games you're wanting to play. Hardware Unboxed did a bunch of testing on the RDNA3 and nVidia cards and in games that you would care about ray tracing in, the RDNA3 cards were solid performers. This is probably going to be even more so for the 4070 with its lower VRAM.
