Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Mitch McConnell to Announce His Retirement, GOP Sources In the Senate ConfirmFantastic. You need to spend some more time with your Chinese donors and corporate bagmen, Mitch. Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell has been out of the public eye for weeks, following a serious fall that hospitalized him. Now multiple sources confirm that Senators John Barrasso of Wyoming, John Cornyn of Texas and John Thune of South Dakota are actively reaching out to fellow Republican senators in efforts to prepare for an anticipated leadership vote -- a vote that would occur upon announcement that McConnell would be retiring from his duties as leader, and presumably the Senate itself. One source says that Cornyn has been particularly active in his preparations, taking fellow senators with whom he has little in common to lunch in attempts to court them.I'll bet he has. Great, McConnell retires, and John F'n' Cornyn replaces him. 26 KY governor has his hands full this weekUgh and he's a Democrat. The legislature passed a law that the governor can only pick a replacement from a list the legislators give him, but he says that's unconstitutional and will fight it. Thanks for running for office until they had to carry you out on a stretcher, Mitch. That's not the only retirement news in the Senate. Democrats began demanding that Dianne Feinstein retire. She is decrepit and nearly as demented as Biden, and has been absent from the Senate for a long time due to shingles (which I understand is like chicken pox, only much more painful and dangerous for older people). Because she's on the Judiciary Committee, this leaves the Democrats short votes to clear their leftwing maniac know-nothing diversity slot judges who don't know what the Brady Doctrine is, or what a woman is, because they're not biologists. And that's got Democrats frothing mad. They want her to admit she's incapable of serving as Senator -- or actually, they want her staffers and handlers to admit this; they don't think Feinstein is calling the shots any longer -- and resign so they can get back to destroying the scraps and dust that remain of pre-Obama America. Feinstein's staffers, handlers, and nurses won't let the old hag resign -- I guess they don't have jobs lined up, and need to keep this old cow's milk flowing a couple of more years -- but they have agreed that the Fake Senator should lose her place on the Judiciary Committee, to be replaced by someone cogent, or, if a cogent Democrat cannot be located, at least a Democrat capable of being physically present at work. But only temporarily, while she convalesces. U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, who has faced calls to resign from fellow Democrats, asked Wednesday to be temporarily replaced on the Judiciary Committee while she recovers from illness that has kept her away from Washington for weeks. Feinstein, the oldest member of Congress at 89, said in a statement that her recovery from a case of shingles she disclosed in early March had been delayed because of complications. She provided no date for her return and said she had requested that Majority Leader Chuck Schumer ask the Senate to allow another Democratic senator to serve in her committee seat until she was able to return. "I intend to return as soon as possible once my medical team advises that it's safe for me to travel," Feinstein said. "In the meantime, I remain committed to the job and will continue to work from home in San Francisco." Feinstein's lengthy absence has caused increasing anxiety within her party because it has threatened Democratic efforts to confirm President Joe Biden's nominees for federal courts in a narrowly divided chamber. Her decision to seek a committee stand-in during her recovery came shortly after two House Democrats called on her to resign after her extended absence from Washington. In recent years, Feinstein has faced questions in recent years about her cognitive health and memory, though she has defended her effectiveness representing a state that is home to nearly 40 million people. "Often all a Senator has to do is show up and vote the way their staff indicates."
There was one amiable but notably dim GOP senator back in the day who'd walk up to any GOP staffer (or one he assumed was) during a vote and ask how he was supposed to vote. Not sure I ever saw one of his staff on the floor. We all felt sorry for him. To be fair, a lot of the voting is party line, sometimes with obvious and well-known exceptions (regional, particular interest, whatever), so senators from either side might just ask any handy staffer who knows what the vote's about, at times. One particularly affable southern Dem senator I sort of ended up shadow-staffing on certain topics (to a limited extent) had a great way of asking - "so what would a guy like me do on this one?" - only half jokingly. Posted by: rhomboid at April 13, 2023 03:22 PM (OTzUX) 140
McConnell should have never run for re-election to begin with. Once you reach a certain age, you know you cannot keep up the work that is required. I am not saying you should stop working period at a certain age, but you gotta find work you can do. Senator is not one of them.
*** Been saying this for years now. We are being governed by absolute sociopaths. Normal people work their asses off in the faint hope that they can make enough money one day or at least have enough money set aside to retire early and enjoy life and spend time with their family and friends. The people governing us have to be beaten into the grave with the back of a shovel rather than retire and give up power. Worse yet, everyone is expected to clap and cheer for some desiccated husk who's worth hundreds of millions of dollars and who's been in office since before Disco. DiFi is sort of a living useful reminder of how far/fast CA - and even SF - have fallen. As mayor she was not remotely as destructive and moonbat as everyone that has followed her. I recall when she even had the USS Iowa's location changed (or opened it up to change) when she amended the language she herself had fought to put into law (those battleships were fought over fairly vigorously, for good reason). It went from "San Francisco, CA" to "CA" - thus letting Vallejo grab the ship, though that didn't work out.
IIRC, all of this caused by the absurd (now it would be routine - and vigorously, angrily backed by the CNO and JSC, no doubt) proposal to put some kind of "gays in military history" sub-museum on board. WTFF? Anyway, DiFi ended up being on the side of punishing the idiots who wanted to do that. A different universe. Posted by: rhomboid at April 13, 2023 03:40 PM (OTzUX) 284

But only temporarily, while she convalesces.
++++ I don't know why either she or McConnell are agreeing to this. Their programming is very simple when you get right down to it. Feinstein introduces or supports openly radical items and rubber-stamps any radical appointment. McConnell pretends to object to openly radical items and appointments, while working in the background to ensure adequate payoffs to guarantee that it happens anyway. Both of these people - and Schumer and in fact anyone in the Senate who isn't named Rand Paul or Krysten Sinema or Joe Manchin - could be replaced with robots with fairly simple AI backing them up. Sinema and Manchin would need more sophisticated programming, but not by much. They're all in tight with Disney.

California has an interior capital city and as a result, it is comparatively conservative region within the state. The odds of MAGA-related agitation are much higher in the California interior than it is in Coastal California. This is not surprising given that all of the conditions that lead to infection with the MAGA ideology - low education, low-value labor, reflexive outgroup exclusion, inherent racism, xenophobia, etc. - are more common in rural areas. There is a reason that rural areas are more susceptible to shiny fascist ideologies, and it's because those areas - and California has plenty of them - exhibit most or all of the underlying social pathologies needed for fascism to be viewed as appealing. 359 I know you meant this sarcastically, but it's a bigger probability than you think.

How far they've fallen from their position of utter strength - which was "meh food at a great price with some slick, general-appeal marketing."
Yeah it was never great, but it was okay and a reasonable price. You could build your own sandwich from mediocre ingredients, that's kind of nice. But they did nearly everything wrong, starting with pedo fat boy as the face of their business. I mean that was just bad luck, who'd have guessed? But still. Not a well-run company. What are the odds that 1.3 million people can keep a secret? End the practice of classifying documents, they have no place in a society like ours. When I can’t go out to eat by myself for under $10 most restaurants are not going to get my business.
Its 15-20 bucks now, even for a cheap place. But I can't blame them. Minimum wages skyrocketed, cutouts for restaurants because of tips were removed, costs have gone through the roof for foods and utilities. They can't just eat that, the profit margins on restaurants are already pretty slender. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 13, 2023 04:02 PM (0hOvj) 447
Regarding the argument that Beshar has to appoint one of three picked by the GOP legislature... don't get your hopes up for three fire-breathing conservatives. More likely, the three will be the kind of Republicans McConnell likes- namely, Loeffler or McSally-type corporate squishes who have nice political resumes, and who will get absolutely crushed in the next general election.

Oldcat I've been saying the same thing about (what I've seen) of the "leaked" "intel". Now I've hardly pursued it at all, so only have seen highlights (as deemed by those actually reading through it all).
So far .... sub-meh. And nothing that will affect the basics. But this is fairly typical, in my experience. For a product of this kind, one mostly gets things you could easily otherwise get, or reasonably surmise, with some assessments/guesses tossed in (many of which, often, are pretty unimpressive). Posted by: rhomboid at April 13, 2023 03:58 PM (OTzUX) The franticness of the response here is telling - the few nuggets that aren't easily found online aren't that embarrassing except it seems to show factions in the US Gov (shock!) and the disconnect between the Admin's story about what's going on and what is really going on. As that gets wider the clapback when reality becomes undeniable will grow. Posted by: Oldcat at April 13, 2023 04:04 PM (eoQWY) 454

Dunno if KY Constitution has any provisions barring it under state law. Prior to the 17th Amendment, state legislatures had the power to fill the Senate seats and the 17th does nothing to advance the theory that the state legislatures are now prevented from passing legislation to put restrictions on governors filling the position.
