The transgender movement has left many intelligent Americans confused about sex. Asked to define the word "woman" during her Supreme Court confirmation hearings last year, Ketanji Brown Jackson demurred, saying "I'm not a biologist." I am a biologist, and I'm here to help. Are sex categories in humans empirically real, immutable and binary, or are they mere "social constructs"? The question has public-policy implications related to sex-based legal protections and medicine, including whether males should be allowed in female sports, prisons and other spaces that have historically been segregated by sex for reasons of fairness and safety. Chase Strangio of the American Civil Liberties Union frequently claims that the binary concept of sex is a recent invention "exclusively for the purposes of excluding trans people from legal protections." Scottish politician Maggie Chapman asserted in December that her rejection of the "binary and immutable" nature of sex was her motivation for pursuing "comprehensive gender recognition for nonbinary people in Scotland." ("Nonbinary" people are those who "identify" as neither male nor female.) When biologists claim that sex is binary, we mean something straightforward: There are only two sexes. This is true throughout the plant and animal kingdoms. An organism's sex is defined by the type of gamete (sperm or ova) it has the function of producing. Males have the function of producing sperm, or small gametes; females, ova, or large ones. Because there is no third gamete type, there are only two sexes. Sex is binary. Intersex people such as David French, whose genitalia appear ambiguous or mixed, don't undermine the sex binary. Many gender ideologues, however, falsely claim the existence of intersex conditions renders the categories "male" and "female" arbitrary and meaningless. In "Hermaphrodites and the Medical Invention of Sex" (199, the historian of science Alice Dreger writes: "Hermaphroditism causes a great deal of confusion, more than one might at first appreciate, because--as we will see again and again--the discovery of a 'hermaphroditic' body raises doubts not just about the particular body in question, but about all bodies. The questioned body forces us to ask what exactly it is--if anything--that makes the rest of us unquestionable."
In reality, the existence of borderline cases no more raises questions about everyone else's sex than the existence of dawn and dusk casts doubt on day and night. For the vast majority of people, their sex is obvious. And our society isn't experiencing a sudden dramatic surge in people born with ambiguous genitalia. We are experiencing a surge in people who are unambiguously one sex claiming to "identify" as the opposite sex or as something other than male or female. Gender ideology seeks to portray sex as so incomprehensibly complex and multivariable that our traditional practice of classifying people as simply either male or female is grossly outdated and should be abandoned for a revolutionary concept of "gender identity." This entails that males wouldn't be barred from female sports, women's prisons or any other space previously segregated according to our supposedly antiquated notions of "biological sex," so long as they "identify" as female. But "intersex" and "transgender" mean entirely different things. Intersex people have rare developmental conditions that result in apparent sex ambiguity. Most transgender people aren't sexually ambiguous at all but merely "identify" as something other than their biological sex. Once you're conscious of this distinction, you will begin to notice gender ideologues attempting to steer discussions away from whether men who identify as women should be allowed to compete in female sports toward prominent intersex athletes like South African runner Caster Semenya. Why? Because so long as they've got you on your heels making difficult judgment calls on a slew of complex intersex conditions, they've succeeded in drawing your attention away from easy calls on unquestionably male athletes like 2022 NCAA Division I women's swimming and diving champion Lia Thomas. They shift the focus to intersex to distract from transgender.

Nonsensical academic prattle.
The presence of deformities does not make the non-deformed cease to exist. Hermaphrodites are deformed. They have a genetic defect. This defect is easy to detect *because* it results in their deviation from the norm through no fault or choice of their own. This does not mean that intersex people should be shunned or destroyed, but it *also* does not mean that normal people should be stripped of their normality in the name of an unusual birth defect.
This kind of argument is *everywhere* in academia, and it is stupid everywhere it is used. "This rare exception shows that there is no such thing as normal and thus rules and conventions are impossible" is not intelligent or academically rigorous.

They also have a variety of physical, mental, and emotional health problems, such as sterility, depression, a greater risk for certain types of cancer, etc., and in many cases need lifelong medication to manage the various aspects of their condition.

Which is why "gender" is used in the first place. Sex is biological, you see, but "gender" is socially-constructed and therefore mutable. They took linguistic terms and applied them elsewhere to achieve their corrosive goals. It's why those actually schooled in the ideology were aghast at Jackson's answer to the question. Defining a *female* can be made on biological terms, but defining a *woman* cannot be. Womaness is socially-constructed and transcends biology.
This is an impossible double-standard to maintain, which is why it is failing and biological sex is now the default position they have to argue. This leads to all kinds of absurdities - like objecting to classifying skeletons by sex because we can't know how the person identified when he or she was alive.

There are no true borderline cases, a human will either have X-X or X-Y chromosomes which is hard coded in every cell of your body, there are cases where there may be the presence of vestigial sexual organs of both genders, but only one set will be functional, often times neither is functional.
What these people are, harsh as it may seem, are genetic defects.
You cannot be both sexes and you cannot change your sex.

Thankfully, no. It's for a non-tenure track assistant teaching professor gig. He's already had two failed attempts at tenure at other institutions, so I doubt he'll make it here. We are fairly conservative for a university, so I don't know that he would fit in well with the other faculty.

Dancer's get laughed at a lot, but they really are incredibly athletic. It takes a lot of strength and stamina to perform those moves for long periods of time. Female ballerinas can kick like an ostrich if you piss them off.

This is what I keep coming back to. As to his point about the physical risks of obsessive ballet on young female bodies, I actually agree with him. Gymnastics is even worse. The physical, dietary, and mental strain this puts on girls is often damaging. But such is the nature of the beast in all competitive sports. And of course if you don't see the difference between training very hard for sports and cutting off young girls' boobs, then there is no hope for you.

I teach folk dance, but the kind where there are specific steps for the men and specific steps for the women. There are cultural reasons for this and the dances are really parts of courtship rituals and how men and women relate to each other. They are beautiful!

I disagree. I dance argentine tango and swing regularly and watching two men or women dance is interesting. It's not the same and a man and a woman, but done well it has a different vibe that can be good in its own right.
And learning both parts is very helpful, because it teaches you a lot of about what you should be looking for if you're a follow, or helps you improve your lead as a leader.

Over the years I've had several students who were ballet dancers, all of them female, and all between the ages of 17 and 23. I can't tell you how many times one of them dropped out in class because they were basically living off of 800 calories a day. You can't do that s*** and train in the martial arts. The diet they put these girls through, especially when they're in a troupe and performing somewhere, is ridiculous. I mean you couldn't even keep a pet dog on those rations.
I'm pretty sure this dude making a fool of himself probably eats more calories than that in one meal. The girls used to complain that they had to stay under a hundred pounds because the ballet guys would complain if they got over 100 lb because it made them very heavy to pick up while they were dancing.

I don't often do the this-is-why-we-lose thing here. But it's hard not to be amazed at this kind of talk in 2023. You don't have the option of not caring; the left has made this very clear. I've been studying Narcissistic Personality Disorder of late - they regularly abuse their spouses but usually, it turns out, in ways that don't even get perceived by the victim for years, decades even. They tend to offload the blame for their treatment onto themselves, but there are no bruises or cuts or broken bones. Just a string of confusion and mess they can't even begin to identify until years later when they see it all for what it really was, and are at that point a broken ground down mess. The narcissist on the other hand is fine.
This isnt woke victim bumping shit. This is the truth. It comes naturally to narcissists. It's what they do to those close to them. There is even a sadistic profile to about a third of them.
I haven't been able to help but noticd how the Left behaves EXACTLY like them. Like the sadistic ones.

I'm from the panhandle and in a prior career sold steam-methane reforming equipment, used primarily for producing hydrogen.
And I've seen many busted up elevators from dust explosions.
The barn in question was a new facility and I'm quite certain it was engineered to manage methane and ammonia concentrations in the barn area.
The notion that methane concentration from the cows was able to build up to the point it reached exceeded lower explosive limits is without some other intervention is highly doubtful.
