  • The best new lightweight laptop may be an old lightweight laptop. (Ars Technica)

If you're looking for a new lightweight Windows laptop and don't want to wait until eventually AMD models show up, you might be better off buying a model from last year while they're clearing out old stock.

Intel's mainstream 13th generation laptop chips are barely better than 12th generation, and there are some good sales going on, particularly with sales down 30% year-on-year.

New version of Stellarium is out, 23.1. They have changed the versioning. 23 refers to the year, and the .n refers to the release in that that year.

This updates Stellarium 1.2

5 Hey! Made it! Evening and morning to all of you, then!

Yesterday LenNeal gave me some good advice about copying photos and ringtones from one Android phone to another. I checked also with an IT guy at my work. I have the cables I need to connect the phones to my computer, and I can download Samsung's Smart Switch to the PC. Maybe this will go well today. Possibly I can copy some items from the PC to the Samsung phone -- a photo I can use as wallpaper, the ringtone I want, etc.

6 From the last thread: Robert, I never visited Hearne, TX, but I stayed in Bryan for a month just after Hurricane Katrina. It got hot in September in the afternoons, but mornings were reasonably cool and much less humid than in Da Swamp. And the people were quite nice. A local church member let Miss Linda, the cats, and me stay in a house he had for rent in Bryan. In return we kept it clean, put the garbage out and did other chores as required. I'm sure he was more than glad to have us there rather than some of the low-lifes who fled the hurricane and who infested Houston and environs. The College Station library issued us temporary cards so we could take books out, too.

I keep meaning to go back during a Christmas break to see what it's like in cool-to-cold weather.

7 Picked up a couple of HP EliteDesk minis for dirt cheap.

These have i7 processors that are not win 11 compliant but so what, they run Linux like a champ and can be Hackintoshed.

One is destined to replace a RPI as a Plex/Media server, the other is going to replace an old home server.

I might keep the third one as a Win 10 machine just to study Windows in the wild until MS ends support for Win10 sometime in 2025.

9 I bought a ThinkPad a little while ago. Ran windows 11 like a champ out of the box, then one day crawled to a sludgy halt. Good specs. Swapped out the ssd to make sure it wasn't a dud, even did a 100% wipe and factory re-set with a full drive format. No malware, nothing in startup besides windows itself.

I suspect it's Windows defender in the background, but honestly when it's running super slow, i check resources and nothing is used above 10%.

It's maddening.

Update from Jane d'oh regarding her husband:

They will be taking him off life support at 10 am tomorrow morning. Please, let's send all the prayers we can to ease his passing and also ease the grief of Jane and her son.

We Catholics pray to St. Joseph for a "happy death" because he was surrounded by Jesus and Mary when he died. I told Jane that step one was in place for her husband, as his wife and son will be there with him. I will pray to St. Joseph to do the rest, and may the Lord take her husband home in peace.

Thank you for all the prayers you have been offering, and for all the ones to come.

137 Kevin McCarthy came to Las Cruces to help Yvette Harrell kick off her campaign for the house of representative seat here. Her first run at it was a typical Democrat win, after the fact and by the thinnest of margins, it was a stunning come from behind victory. Her second bid resulted in victory and the Democrats lost their their minds in New Mexico and promptly redefined the district to screw her. In her third race against, effectivel,y a communist she got smacked down because of redistricting. And now round for begins against the Spanish speaking communist. It's going to be an uphill battle because all her votes have been scattered amongst two other districts. McCarthy seems to think this is a winnable race and he may be right. Mayor Pete and lactating mother was down here handing out 10 million the other day. I don't think that happened because he gives a damn about this part of the United States.

A couple of disclaimers. I went to a chart which has varying weights for the walker. I used the heaviest weight of 205 pounds. If you weigh less, say 130 pounds, then 740 calories expended. Now you *are* building muscle when walking. Muscle requires more caloric intake. If you want to add a backpack with weights then calories expended increases.
