Daily Tech News 10 April 2023

Top Story

  • You can't buy a Flipper Zero on Amazon anymore. (Bleeping Computer)

This is a device for testing short-range communications protocols like RFID, NFC, and Bluetooth, and finding security vulnerabilities. Which is very important given the number of vulnerabilities out there in the wild needing to be fixed. but a bit of a worry in the hands of the wrong people, like, for example, Apple, Samsung, or Kia.

Tech News

  • AMD's 9474F is faster than AMD's 5995WX. (Notebook Check)

The 5995WX was the world's fastest CPU for some time, with 64 Zen 3 cores and high clock speeds, since it's a workstation CPU and not a thermally-constrained server chip.

The 9474F is a thermally-constrained server chip, and only has 48 cores. and runs at a lower clock speed. But with Zen 4 cores and 5nm vs. 7nm production, it's just plain more efficient.

The fastest Intel CPUs on Passmark now start at #28 on the chart, with AMD Zen 4, Zen 3, and even Zen 2 chips occupying the top 27 slots.

There are no scores yet for Intel's Sapphire Rapids server or workstation chips, but since anyone can submit a score, that just means there aren't chips around for people to benchmark. I'm not seeing the new W-2400 desktop chips on sale anywhere, or even being reviewed, and they were due last month.

  • Intel's second-generation graphics cards, codenamed Battlemage, are expected next year - and probably won't suck. (TechSpot)

In fact, following driver updates and price cuts, Intel's first generation cards don't suck. The A750 for example is pretty comparable to AMD's 6700, and cheaper.

When first released they were bad on older game titles (particularly running DirectX 9) but that has largely been resolved, and early driver bugs are reportedly pretty much resolved.

If Intel remains on track for two more generations - expected in 2024 and 2026 - they may end up with something genuinely good. And given Nvidia's 4000-series pricing, more competition is very welcome.

Evening and morning to all! 'Tis Monday, of course, and this week will probably stink like a long-neglected garbage can containing skunk guts and litter-box leavings, but hey, we're alive. Right? . . . Right?

5 Skip, you mentioned you have a Galaxy phone. Did you put one of those plastic shields on it -- a Body Glove? If so, can you remove the shield easily so you can get to the SIM card tray, and can you still manipulate the volume controls with the shield in place? I haven't popped my phone into the shield I bought yet.

45 My Mom passed her famous potato salad recipe on yo me about a year before she passed. Yes, onions. Always made it in this huge yellow glass bowl (which I think is really part of the secret).

Anyway, after frying up the bacon so it's just so she lays the bacon out to setup a but before hand-shredding and she takes the bacon grease and pours it into the bowl with all the other stuff that's been already prepared.

I was shocked. I just looked at her and she said "That's the secret."

I think that's the thing I didn't like about the wife's last batch of potato salad - raw onions. She didn't cook them. There was too much 'bite' which overpowered everything else.

58 Looking over last night's thread I see someone mentioned Rodney Dangerfield not looking like a happy guy. Yeah, I got that impression too.

I got thrown out of his dressing room once. I was in a little jazz combo that played for him when he was in B'more and he invited the band and a few friends back-stage for a little after show party. Had a lined trashcan full of Heinekens on ice. Nice.

Anyway he's standing there in his dressing gown with is socks an shoes with garters holding up his socks. " I just joked "Hey, nice legs!" He looked of at some Vinnie looking guy and I was gone.

At the time he looked pretty stressed out. I was just trying to lighten up things. Didn't work. No sense of humor. Just business I guess.

We had a number of little stores like that, often converted from a house, with the owner and family living upstairs. One was by a city park with a couple ponds. In the winter the store would experience an uptick in canned tuna leaving the store, paid for or otherwise. Made great hockey pucks.

My wife was explaining the tradition of a half day off on Good Friday. Between noon and 3 pm is the approximate time that Christ hung from the cross. Way back when, stores shut down and people went to Christian services in that period of time. Employers closed at noon.

Related: We drove past half a dozen churches yesterday and the parking lots were all full to overflowing.

I'm pretty sure in Data Base Advisor in the 80's I first read and adopted some code which it took the Internet until the 2010's to adopt. When you start a search and the computer begins to suggest what you're looking for and provides a 'pick list' to simply click on? Ancient code.

Who the hell am i to place a leash on God? He doesn't have to follow my rules. I can't tell you what He does after you kick the bucket. What I can say is there's very good reason to believe that following the Cross and asking for repentance is the 100% surefire way to "get in", and that if my goal is to peel the scales from the eyes who don't realize that, then "convert or face eternal suffering because I say so" is a pretty counterproductive sales pitch. The Gospels and the Spirit do the heavy lifting of conversion. All we dumb broken humans can do is clear the path and maybe dispel a few lies and myths that get bandied about regarding them. Maybe it is true that there's no escape hatch for the soul if you die unrepentant. If so, that's all the more reason to make the sales pitch as effective as possible. Lead with the joy of faith and the beauty of truth, not with arrogant threats and clique-ish tribalism.
