Judeo-Christian Philosophy And The Glory Of Western Culture

Today marks the historical beginning of Christianity, which is one of the pillars of Western civilization, along with ancient Greece, ancient Rome, and obviously Judaism. The religious, philosophical, cultural and social underpinnings of modern free societies exist because of those four things.

But Christianity was one of the catalysts for the spread of that unique blend across the Western world, which is why the West is Christian.

The Resurrection
Domḗnikos Theotokópoulos

The West's success is inextricably linked to Judeo-Christian philosophy and culture, and perhaps the most important aspect of it it is respect for life and the individual.

The caustic effects of movement away from the primacy of life and the individual can be seen in any socialist country, with Stalin's Soviet Union, Hitler's Third Reich, Mao's China and Pol Pot's Cambodia as the most awful examples of a world in which communitarianism (a pretty name for The State) transcends the individual.

A federal judge suspends FDA's longtime approval of an abortion pill, but gives the government 7 days to appeal

In an unprecedented move, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk on Friday suspended the Food and Drug Administration's longtime approval of key abortion pill mifepristone, though he gave the government a week to appeal his decision. If the ruling does eventually go into effect, it would curtail access to the standard regimen for medication abortion nationwide.

I cannot judge the legal merits of this case, and the political aspects of it are fraught with danger for the Republican party (listen to the newest CutJibNewsletter Podcast for more on that), but sending the message to America that the destruction of life is not an unalloyed good thing is powerful, even if the message comes via a legal machination.

Abortion isn't just about the killing of a baby in the womb. It is about the coarsening of our culture and the loss of respect for life. How can a supposedly modern and enlightened society turn its back on the weakest and most innocent among us and approve of their destruction without a concomitant coarsening of its attitude toward ALL life?

Yes, there is a philosophical argument against abortion that can be made without explicit reference to theology. But they are intertwined, and it would be difficult to separate them. Nor should we. Respect for religious teachings is part and parcel of most of our political philosophy, and the founders of our great nation were in the main religious men who relied on religious teaching for their moral guides.

And...denying that connection is a powerful tool in the left's arsenal, so supporters of individual freedom and respect for life should push back forcefully when it is wielded in defense of abortion. Acceptance of Judeo-Christian philosophy, morality and ethics is not de facto approval of Catholic Apologetics, or even religion, but it is a recognition that the glories of Western Culture are based in large part on the teachings of those religions.

20 Someone brought up how important actual ownership of land/property is and how it is actually a unique thing in most of the world for individuals to own it. But taxes kill the actual true ownership of said land/property. Still we are unique in that all you need is money to "own" property. In many places it's still hereditary where there is "individual" ownership verses a feudal/state system still in place.

25 If I have it correctly, Passover for the Jewish began at sunset on the 5th this year. So basically that would be the 6th, in that the start of the next day (Biblically) was at sunset.

And Passover is a "special high day", also called a Sabbath, if I have it correctly. So happy Passover. (something about unleavened bread goes on for 7 days I think).

But it means there were two Sabbaths last week. Important in understanding how Jesus was crucified before the sabbath, but it was a high day. It was Wednesday. At Sunset Jesus was in the tomb, the first night of the three nights and three days (like Jonah in the whale, dead). Jesus was our Passover lamb, now our high priest forever, (and our brother).

When Russia expanded east of the Caucasus, the Tsars and the Russian aristocracy took ownership of all of it, and later the Soviets continued their policies. It is still mostly undeveloped. At the same time, as America expanded west, much of the best land was given to private citizens through the Homesteading program and other similar policies. (The feds still own 90% of places like Nevada because no one else wanted that worthless dirt)

Imagine what Russia could have been if their East had been developed like our West was.

40 Very well said, CBD.

I think the left and and a lot of people in the middle get around loss of respect for life, by focusing on aspects of their own lives that they think are most important. A woman I know who used to be largely against abortion, is now very "pro choice" as "men would do it if they felt a child prevented them from career goals, completing their education, or enjoying their sex lives". Now she's 73, and possibly looking back in anger at what she could have accomplished had she not married right out of college. She points to the accomplishments of her daughters, neither of whom have children, and one who is 46 and unmarried. They would not have been a professor or an entrepreneur if they had raised a child.

Naturally, all the evidence is against her argument as plenty of women who furthered their educations and run businesses are mothers, and some did not choose the timing of their births. The parenthood was not "planned", but their child was not an impediment.

I think a lot of older women who are so invested in abortion are looking at what they wish they had accomplished and cannot blame themselves.

The issue with this strategy is that the majority of the country is no longer religious (as far as the religions of Christianity and Judaism... plenty are religious as far as wokism, BLM, DIE, ESG, "climate change" and gender dysphoria cults).

So appealing to someone based on Christianity or Judaism will sadly not resonate with the majority of people in the country anymore. Especially Millennial and Gen-Z generations.

66 Found this fairly brief description of the painting at the website of the Spanish National Art Museum -- Prado Museum -- in Madrid where it's located:

1597 - 1600. Oil on canvas.
Room 009B

"At the top, a nude Christ bears a white banner in his left hand, symbolizing triumph over death. His purple robe signifies sacrifice and martyrdom, while his rhomboidal halo echoes the Byzantine tradition. The soldiers that guard the sepulcher appear surprised and confused by the event, except for one who is asleep. The use of scorcio gives these figures a high degree of dynamism. The borders of this work show the canvas´s priming, where the artist tested his colors and removed the overly thick hairs from his brushes. This painting, signed with Greek letters on the lower edge off the canvas, belonged to the main altarpiece - of the church of the School College of María of Aragón, as were other works at the Prado Museum."

reposted from yesterday:

Yes. I know you had just finished reading Kangor's The Devil and Karl Marx. After reading that book, I realized that Communism is an anti-Christian religion. It is essentially a Christian heresy that emphasizes material objects (i.e., creatures) rather than the Creator. It purports to accomplish a mathematical sameness of outcome to "help the poor" but requires the commission of the Sins of Pride, Envy, Anger and Theft.

Kangor's book really helps make it clear that this is a spiritual conflict, rather than a dispute between economic models. We have some 150 years of complete failure of Communist economies wherever attempted, but the Communists are not amenable to learning. (The Communists try to link to the early Christians but those were religious communities with an emphasis on the salvation of souls. There is no agape' in Communism.)

75 20 Someone brought up how important actual ownership of land/property is and how it is actually a unique thing in most of the world for individuals to own it. But taxes kill the actual true ownership of said land/property. Still we are unique in that all you need is money to "own" property. In many places it's still hereditary where there is "individual" ownership verses a feudal/state system still in place.

79 Unreal the hatred being spewed by people as I took a quick glance through social media this morning. I don’t see Christians accosting non believers out in the streets or attacking them on social media. There is nothing more preachy and intolerant than a member of the religion of militant Atheism these days. I can handle a Jehovah Witness beating on my door waking me up on any Sunday than tolerating one minute of these militant assholes always going out of their way to mock and belittle religious folk.
One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made is accepting invitations to Right to Life marches and having to listen to some of these pricks hurl invective saying the most f’d up shit at marchers. I left the forgiveness to the more devout amongst the marchers and kicked the shit out of three of them bastards shouting their BS. Got kicked out of the March and was not invited to future Right to Life marches.
Under their breath though a few of the fellow marchers praised me for what I did. It felt good.

They want servants, serfs, and slaves. The wealthy elite will rule over all. They will enjoy all the sin and debauchery they want and anyone who is not of the elite will be one of those three classes.
Servants have decent education and manners. They have the right skin color and can be seen in public. Household help, teachers, cops, firefighters, etc.
Serfs aren't as educated, rough manners, slightly darker skin tone. They work on farms and ranches or in factories. Not seen by the elites.
Slaves are uneducated and have the darkest skin. They are forced to work day and night in the most dangerous jobs. The elites don't admit these people exist because they don't consider them to be people.

92 Passover was Thursday, but the day started at sundown the prior day, so Wed. The Last supper was Wed night, Jesus was arrested that night then taken to the Pharisees Thurs and on to Pilate. He was cricified friday morning, died by the afternoon and had to be taken off the cross and put in the tomb before the passover sabbath started friday at sundown. The Pharisees did not want bodies on the cross on sabbath. That is why they asked the romans to break the legs of the crucified, but when they got to Jesus, he looked dead already, prompting the stabbing. It was unusual to have died so quickly, crucifixion usually took a couple days.

96 One more analysis of the painting from ArtsDot.com (1 of 2):

"Probably painted for the Colegio de Doña Maria, Madrid. It is of the same size and shape as the Pentecost, to which it was almost certainly a pair. The place of these two paintings in the chapel is more difficult to decide. The Resurrection was almost certainly on the left and the Pentecost on the right, because of their relationship in meaning with the Nativity and the Baptism, respectively. If they were placed above these two paintings, the narrower format would correspond with the upper range of paintings. This and the Pentecost would have been the last of the paintings executed for the Colegio. Only one other painting of the subject by El Greco is known, that for Santo Domingo el Antiguo. This painting and the Adoration of the Shepherds are higher in proportion to their width than the corresponding paintings in Santo Domingo el Antiguo. Christ is shown in a blaze of glory, striding through the air and holding the white banner of victory over death ..."

99 One more analysis of the painting from ArtsDot.com (2 of 2):

"... The soldiers who had been placed at the tomb to guard it scatter convulsively. Two of them cover their eyes, shielding themselves from the radiance, and two others raise one hand in a gesture of acknowledgement of the supernatural importance of the event. Another wearing a helmet decorated with brilliantly coloured plumes, rests his cheek on his hand - the traditional pose of melancholy - still unaware of Christ's resurrection. El Greco's skill in creating dramatically foreshortened figures is clamorously apparent in the soldier wearing a yellow cuirass sprawled in the foreground and in the adjacent soldier in green. By excluding any visual reference to the tomb or to landscape, El Greco removed the scene from the realm of history, he articulated its universal significance through the dynamism of nine figures that make up the composition and the intensity of the light and colours. The painting (275 x 127 cm) is in the collection of the Museo del Prado, Madrid."

the last supper was not on Passover (including Wednesday evening, the start of Passover). And Passover is a sabbath day. Jesus Christ was our Passover lamb, the sacrificed lamb of God. He could not be alive for Passover.

"A vital text proving that there were two Sabbaths in that week has been obscured by almost every translation into English. Only Ferrar Fenton's version has this point correct.

Turn to Matthew 28:1. In the common versions it says, "In the end of the Sabbath," or more correctly, "after the Sabbath." Notice that both of these renderings use the singular -- Sabbath. But in the original Greek the word is in the PLURAL. Fenton renders it correctly by saying, "After the SABBATHS," ... "The Greek original is in the plural, 'Sabbaths'."

so JC was raised at sunset on (Western) Saturday night.

It is playing God.
I had the opportunity to abort my son after heart defects were detected on the initial sonogram, made worse when they mentioned some scary potential other issues he might have that include heart defects (e.g. DiGeorge syndrome, a death sentence). It is a terrible burden, deciding whether another being should live or die. I chose not to play God, and it was the best decision!

It's obvious that people taking on this decision has made it infinitely easier to then transition to deciding another's life/death in many other scenarios. As I've gotten older it's become clear that abortion has been an incredibly destructive force on our culture -- Created a culture of Death.

Were they fired for failure to comply with contract deliverables? Was the contract complete and they didn't win the recompete, so they had to vacate? Or were they just booted on the whim of some DoD bureaucrat and replaced with someone's buddy?
The reporting is woefully inadequate and I suspect the truth is going to be a bucket of cow dung.

141 I have started to view democrats as rabidly religious jihadis that use their political affiliation as their "religion."

Everything revolves around it. The gay, lesbian and transgender movements. Their stance on gun rights, abortion and crime. Climate change and so on.

Their outlook on all of that (and more) mimics a religious cult but substitutes politics for worship. They've been very effective in spreading their "word" using the various institutions they've infiltrated and suborned.

144 79 There is nothing more preachy and intolerant than a member of the religion of militant Atheism these days. I can handle a Jehovah Witness beating on my door waking me up on any Sunday than tolerating one minute of these militant assholes always going out of their way to mock and belittle religious folk.

For what it's worth I probably dislike them even more than you do. To paraphrase a bunch of stuff one of my personal role models Freeman Dyson said, they like to twist science into a tool of their religion--and make mo mistake, atheism is as much a religion as any other--which dirties the reputation of those who simply seek empirical knowledge of how the world works.

Wow, they did that?!
The timing indicates it was very intentional, it was more than bad optics: they robbed Christians at Walter Reed of the spiritual leaders at the beginning of Holy Week as an extra FU.

men and women cannot live with no religious faith. If they abandon any semblance of honest and moral religious faith, they immediately replace it with an imitation that is much, much worse.

and a huge part of of our society today is on that path.

You all "assume" the Military is well organized? We are not. Yes,if we have the weapons and training, in time of war, break the glass and get the fuck out of the way and let us kill and destroy the enemy ( and even then it will take time to shake off the rust and incompetent "leadership"). But in peace time and when the civilians and the pentagon get in the way, we are a total clusterfuck. Trust me on this one

It's definitely one of those things that sounds really great from a utilitarian standpoint, but immediately falls apart when considering that humans are asshoe to each other on the regular and there's no way it wouldn't end in tyranny and genocide.

One way of looking at the established religions that have been around for a while is as a collection of empirically derived sociological observations--what works and doesn't, over more than a thousand years of very different civilizations--filtered through a lens of spirituality. So it's possible for someone who's not into the spirituality to still look at what they have to say and conclude that there's something of value to be had.

The link went to a tweet on Jacinda Adern. But the trannies will be permanently aggrieved. Not for one second do I believe that the doctors creating girls with the hideous zipper scars and ugly addadicktomees expect those girls to be accepted as men, nor do I believe that the docs believe that mutilated men will be accepted as women. They absolutely know that this will fail. I wonder how much prep time is expended on convincing them that they will be accepted, and how much is spent telling them that they won't be accepted as a different sex, which is what many of them are seeking.

Years ago the Inspector Lewis series did an episode on the emotional effects of this surgery. I'm sure they'd never make it today.

160 One wonders if perhaps sometime in the distant past there was a kingdom who did something like eugenics, it all turned out very Hitlerian and self destructive, and that eventually got baked into the Judeo-Christian tradition as sanctity of life. But the Men Of Reason(tm) knew better, of course, so much of the 20th century was lost to a collectivist bad acid trip. Something something hubris and nemesis.
