Don't Look Now, But The Greatest Economy In the History of the World Is About to Collapse

CNN says that unemployment rates are about to soar, which it blames on the Fed's efforts to combat Biden's hyperinflation, and not Biden's hyperinflation.

Of course.

We are real news, Mr. President.

Millions of jobs could be on the chopping block this year, as the Federal Reserve continues its rate-hiking campaign to tame inflation. But the effects of that action likely won't reverberate evenly across the economy.

...

At its most recent policy-making meeting, the Fed released projections for the year ahead that showed unemployment could jump to 4.5%, representing another 1.5 million job losses, by the end of the year.

While that's a small improvement from the central bank's previous 4.6% jobless rate estimate, economists say it's possible the unemployment rate could rise above the Fed's expectations. Moreover, they say that historically disadvantaged groups could be disproportionately affected by the central bank's stringent monetary policy.

Of course, The Only People Who Matter "could be" "disproportionately affected."

Investors are pulling back from the market, on anticipation of a further recession.

Investors seem to be getting more nervous about growth.

Driving the news: Another day of weak economic data.

* Factory orders, out Tuesday, fell for the second straight month in February.

* And job openings dropped faster than expected, a possible sign the job market is cooling.

Our thought bubble: The data du jour wasn't top shelf, but the numbers were consistent with others showing that parts of the economy -- like the industrial sector -- are losing steam.

Between the lines: Under-the-hood indicators from Tuesday's trading session told a similar tale.

Biden has drained the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which means the US could be wiped out by any oil shock.

Lawmakers are raising concerns that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which President Joe Biden has relied on heavily since taking office, is getting dangerously low.

Gas prices hit record highs last summer, surpassing $5 per gallon nationally. To curb rising prices, Biden released more than 200 million barrels from the U.S. stockpile, bringing the reserves to the lowest point since 1984.

"By gutting vital fuel storage to lower short-term prices, the Biden Administration exposed the U.S. to future market volatility and increased supply dependence on adversarial nations instead of supporting an all-of-the-above energy approach to unleash American energy potential," House Oversight Republicans said in a letter to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

Republicans argue Biden used the reserve to temporarily lower prices ahead of the last November midterm elections. Oversight lawmakers say the Department of Energy has failed to provide documents requested in the inquiry despite repeated requests.

"As a depleted SPR weakens the U.S.'s ability to respond to future supply disruptions, prompt delivery of the requested documents is vital to help Congress ensure U.S. energy security," the letter said.

Do you know how Smartasses say "I'd wish for 3 more wishes!" when asked what they'd wish for if they found a "magic lantern?" And that trick never works with magic lanterns or Monkey Paws.

That's what Disney did with the "oversight board" who "voted" to basically castrate all future oversight boards.

The Yuan dynasty used paper notes drawn on the tax revenue of the Mongol state. This was the second paper currency, since the first was in the Song dynasty, which was based on the use of warehouse receipts as currency, until THEY hyperinflated it attempting to fund wars against their neighboring states and eventually the Mongols, who won.

The Yuan dynasty suffered from massive printing of currency which was absorbed by neighboring states who liked portability and tradeability of the currency. Eventually everyone got caught up with the inflation, rejected it, and the currency collapsed. China then spent the next several dynasties using silver, and one are in central Asia is rumored to distrust paper currency until the 20th century.

Since then until the end of Bretton Woods the monetary metals were Silver and Gold, short of the adaption of bank notes and fiat currencies starting in the 18th centuries, allowing over printing again.

idk, but it doesn't not have to mean collapse. And Jerome Powell already said "there can be more than one reserve currency", so I think they have seen what is coming.

imo, rates do need to go back toward "normal", but BigGov can't keep printing a trillion every time there is an emergency (like climate change, or sad trannies, or polls falling for the Dems, Plandemic, etc.)

Government money markets are at about 4.5% ... lower than inflation, but still, that limits the crazy leveraged positions "WallStreet" uses to extract billions from TheSystem (till they fail and make commoners bail them out) while inflation soars.

Large part of why they need a CBDC. To control all those USDs.

But I am less pessimistic. I think the US economy is starved for USDs. The currency is locked away in banks etc etc etc. And I doubt we'll see a rush back. The infrastructure of the other "polar" currencies will have to be built out.

My real worry is the UST no longer being reserve asset. How does FED deal with that?

It isn't really predictive or prescriptive like Keynesian, it mostly studies how people make decisions. The University of Francisco Marroquin has a group of economists who claimed to have been trying to use the principles on predicting the future, but I haven't heard about them for a while, meaning they either lost interest, or are now living in absolute secluded luxury from getting everything right.

I don't know why, but this reminded me of so eth8ng I heard when I was a kid in Louisiana. Don't know if true, but damn 8t should be.

Farmer clearing a slow moving large stream of an alligator infestation that was eating his cows. EPA dude comes on his property and begins writing citations for fines and other bs. Farmer, forces EPAinto the water at gunpoint, says "you'll either give me official written governmentpermission to eradicate this 'gator, or you'll be his next meal".

Famer won, but he made the EPA stay in the water until they spotted the gator coming at them, then he shot the gator to 'save their lives'.

Look to Brazil and Argentina. Hyperinflationary currencies generally get reset by the central bank, by rubbing off some zeros or by buybacks in the new currency.
In a CBDC they would compel purchase of the new CBDC and give a haircut or a bonus for use for the first however long.
The dollar collapse would be a pretext and be used "out of fairness"

The housing market around here has crashed. It seemed to be literally overnight that things changed. One month and houses were selling in 2-3 days for $100,000 over the appraised value and the next month you couldn't sell a house no matter what price you listed it for.

We have a house in our neighborhood that was bought by a couple in 2016 for $69,000. Older house that needed a bunch of work. They bought the house and worked on it bit by bit over six years. They put a little over $30,000 into fixing that house. They listed it for $199,000 in March of last year, had an offer in two days and sold the house for cash. The people bought the house put more $$$$ into it and listed it in January this year for $225,000. They just pulled it off the market, didn't have a single showing.

$50 is $342 in 2008, and $486 in 2023. In 2008 (iirc, or maybe it was 2001 when the big spike came?) they said $100 oil would be the "tipping point" and were mostly correct. Now it might be $130 or so, idk.

One of the issues though is that a lot of local government is funded via property taxes--the first response by government in inflation is to jack assessments to the sky, then as they are falling in value, drag your feet to reassess and increase the millage rates by threatening essential services like police and fire.

With the shift to online, a lot of these storefronts are now without a point as many of those small fill in businesses like flea markets are being usurped by ebay or etsy. Dunno how the tax changes that are delayed will affect that company though.
