20 The three panels of the triptych tell a story of a free selector, a farmer who has chosen some land to clear and farm, and his family. The story is ambiguous, like many of McCubbin's other works and McCubbin chose not to respond when controversy broke out over the "correct" meaning.

21 I can see each panel representing a stage of their journey. The first panel is the journey itself, as they migrate West.

The second panel shows the family established and growing, with the mother holding the child in her arms, representing setting down roots.

The last panel is the final phase of their journey when the son buries the father, representing that the family is now established.

Or am I overthinking this?

I wonder why the three panels became a thing in art? Why not four for example? Three, of anything, seems to be prevalent;

Tinkers to Evers to Chance

I think that is the reason right here. The Holy Trinity is central to Christianity, of course, and much of the art we appreciate from Western Europe is tied up with religious iconography, so it seems natural that three panels would spring from that movement.

I went with son burying father because of the way the panels change. In the first panel, the woods are thick and uncut. In the second panel, we can see a single homestead through the thinner trees. And in the final panel we can see that there is a town in the distance and the woods are quite a bit thinner than they were, indicating some time (maybe a generation) has passed. So the son (or even grandson) is paying respects to his father/grandfather.

"When are you going to man up and build me a log cabin?"
And thus we jump to the grave scene.

I first saw the last panel as the father at the grave of his family as a reference to how the pioneer journeys were dangerous, but now I think you're right. It's more likely the son. The man in the third panel has no beard, implying he's younger and his clothes are different.

Mass shootings at work, like mass shootings generally, are rare occurrences. Though more common in the US than elsewhere in the world, mass shootings make up less than 1 percent of gun violence deaths in the US, and workplace shootings comprise a smaller subset of those fatalities. The workplace is the most common location for a mass shooting, however, according to the Violence Project.

110 I like the ability of the artist to make a story even if it isn't a happy one. The scenes aren't dramatic but there is a power in the realistic use of light, color, and figures carrying out everyday activities. That lends an emotional element that reaches out to the viewer. Any viewer with an appreciation of what pioneers went through or comes from a culture where pioneers are venerated would be touched by the painting. It is very effective.

117 The painting was first exhibited in a one-man show in 1904 at the Melbourne Athenaeum gallery but did not find a buyer. Walter Withers, a friend of McCubbin's, suggested that McCubbin add a view of Melbourne in the background of the right panel, which he did. The National Gallery of Victoria purchased the painting the following year for 367 pounds and 10 shillings, using funds from the Felton Bequest.

Walter also liked Kinkade.

China fired a warning shot at President Biden when a Chinese-American bank supplied Senate Republicans with records showing millions of dollars flowing from Chinese companies to Mr. Biden’s son Hunter Biden and brother James Biden, said a lawmaker spearheading an investigation of the first family.

Cathay Bank, which is based in Los Angeles but has offices in China, voluntarily turned over bank records requested by Sens. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Charles E. Grassley of Iowa. Every other American bank denied the two Republicans’ requests for financial records.

“In my mind, it’s the Chinese government telling Joe Biden, ‘We got the goods on you, buddy, and we’re willing to dish it up,’” Mr. Johnson told The Washington Times.

They picked a no-win scenario for themselves. There are two possibilites:
1. They're lying about not knowing and thus approved a dramatic shift in brand positioning that has potentially wrecked the brand in the process
2. They run the business in such a way that a subordinate - a powerful subordinate, but not a C-Suite executive - was able to perform a dramatic shift in brand positioning that has potentially wrecked the brand and do so without their knowledge.

Did they approve it and then lie about it, or is the internal management structure so free of controls and accountability that a change this big could happen without their knowledge? Pick whichever answer you like. It doesn't matter. Neither is acceptable.

I find it remarkable that this painting hasn't caused a riot that forced it to be taken down. At a minimum it needs lots of context to explain what you're supposed to think about it because that's what free people do.

I like triptychs. I have a series of photographs of a woman jumping off for bridge attached to a bungee cord. It didn't have any Algonquin or Santee Souix but at least I was able to work in the Navajo because that was the name of the bridge, Navajo Bridge.

|||The White House has corrected a gaffe by Joe Biden that confused New Zealand’s All Blacks rugby team with the British military force known as the Black and Tans that terrorised Ireland.

An official transcript of the remarks released on Thursday crossed out “Black and Tans” and inserted “All Blacks” instead.

The US president made the slip during a speech in the Windsor pub in Dundalk on Wednesday night on the first day of his three-day visit to Ireland.

Biden was thanking Rob Kearney, a distant cousin who played in an Irish rugby team that beat New Zealand, for the tie he was wearing. “This was given to me by one of these guys, right here. He was a hell of a rugby player. He beat the hell out of the Black and Tans.”

Ireland’s rugby team won a famous victory against the All Blacks at Soldier Field in Chicago in 2016.||

One of the things that really enabled us to be the "arsenal of democracy" during WWII no longer exists: obsolete machinery. We had vast amounts of tooling and equipment that was no longer in use for various reasons (the depression, advances in technology, etc.) but we still had it, mostly under oiled tarps out back behind the factory.

New buildings could be slapped up, that equipment could be hauled in, and it could start turning out shells and mines and rifles and whatnot in relatively short order. We can set aside environmental regs and other such things, but we can't wish into being a vast back-catalogue of industrial equipment that we don't have.

The industrial surge capacity we had at the start of WWII wasn't particularly high-quality (it was, for the most part, old stuff under tarps), but we sure did have a lot of it. We don't have that anymore. The old stuff gets crated up and sent off elsewhere.

341 It isn't like the 20 year old who runs the Bud Lite twitter feed made a tweet of Dylan sipping a Bud that went over poorly.

She deliberately said that they want to change the image of Bud Light from one of carefree young bucks having fun to an image of mental disorder, sodomy and shooting up schools.

421 Shelter in place has been lifted. Thank God!!
There was a lot of police presence so either it was a false alarm, or someone had second thoughts. Thank you for all of the prayers.

422 Biden to announce Medicaid, ObamaCare access for DACA recipients

If we had an opposition party they'd announce the following:

1) Any dreamers on government aid will be targeted for deportation, and seizure of assets to pay for this theft

2) Joe Biden will be personally sued for any funds spent

3) Joe Biden will be arrested for fraud - and every red state DA will be bringing individual cases

426 This painting was basically wallpaper for Australian minds ever since it was done. I saw it when I was maybe eight years old. I read it that in the last panel he is a bit older but can't move on because his wife is buried there.

It looks like old-times but my Dad started clearing with an axe when he and Mum were married, a little before I was born. He wised up pretty quick and travelled away, building sheds and houses then bringing the money home to pay for a bulldozer to push trees. We kids later gathered the plowed-up root wood into piles and burnt it so the crops could be planted.

We buried Mum beside Dad last September. Four months earlier she had been fit enough for using the chainsaw, but finally had the clot shot. Did it trigger the lung cancer? Probably not.
Its a bit tough thinking about the family and friends we have lost, and I am not old yet.
