That Apple Thing I Mentioned But Forgot to Post Video of the Day Apple has made it so that a five cent part can't be replaced if it fails - and it does fail - rendering your laptop incapable of detecting when the lid is closed. My Surface Pro 8 has them and you can swap out the SSD. After that, you are hosed. And don't even think about looking at it with cruelty. Other than that it is a tank. So there Apple, piss off. Framework computers are so new they are old, like avocado refrigerators or orange shag carpets. I had a Dell E1705, circa 2005 IIRC, that was completely user serviceable. One time in Twin Falls, ID which is not renowned for being a technology center, the a couple screws fell out of a hinge - major suckage. The good news was there was a Dell call center there and the kind folks there scavenged the screws I needed out of a dead machine. Long live Dell. True Story, no kiddin'. Being able to swap out the SSD on the recent Surface Pro models is a major win. Sure it's only a 2230 drive, but you can easily buy 2TB drives in 2230 size now, and that's plenty for most users. Posted by: Pixy Misa at April 03, 2023 05:21 AM (BLOW1) 23

My big technology excitement today was trying to figure out why, out of the blue, I suddenly was getting audio when watching standard resolution videos on my Roku TV using default settings and I had to switch the audio mode to passthrough when watching High Definition Resolution content while using the eArch HDMI port. Not even Bing AI Chat was able to offer any advice. At least it didn't threaten to ban me for asking. After trying different HDMI cables, a detour into an optical audio cul-de-sac which required changing a bunch of amp input settings and then unsetting them when that failed, various hard reboots, I stumbled into an option that enabled Dolby Vision Plus I didn't know existed in the TV menus which caused both modes to work without drama. Total time spent: 3 hours. Some days I want to burn down the house and go live in a yurt, wear nothing but a wolf skin loin cloth, and spend my days hunting coyotes for entertainment and wild pigs for food.

For relatively simple repairability laptop, I'm pretty sold on Samsung. I heavily dropped a Chromebook 4 in Japan, breaking the screen (it had half a screen and used that for the few remaining days). On return it was for-real 4 screws and a plug. That's it. Good as new. USD$30 for a replacement screen. Turns out I could have repaired it easily in Japan for cheaper. Utube 'Samsung Chromebook tear-down', and the whole thing is super easy to take apart and largely modular. My older 3 is now Linux so it's a decent-enough utility laptop that's easy to fix. Really, the Samsung Chromebook 4 is a tough, practical, little machine. Make it Linux, and no more Google.

Eventually, I needed a new battery. (Leaving it on the charger is not good.) I took it to a local computer repair shop. Good thing too. They went through 2 bad replacement batteries before they got a good one. Cost me just under $100. About 50/50 parts and labor. Labor was a flat fee. A small group of just 10 career criminals was allowed to run amok across the Big Apple and rack up nearly 500 arrests after New York enacted its controversial bail reform law — and most of them are still out on the streets, The Post has learned.
Stunning statistics compiled by the NYPD, and obtained first by The Post, show that the city’s alleged “worst of the worst” repeat offenders have been busted a total of 485 times since bail reform went into effect in 2020. WaPo article on conspiracy theories:
Talk about the money behind misinformation When you’re talking to someone who believes in a conspiracy theory, Wagner said it can be helpful to ask: Who’s benefiting from your believing this? Who’s raising money or making money because of the audience they’ve built from this? Wagner said that it can be helpful to remind people that if somebody at a mainstream news outlet such as The Washington Post or NPR reports something that’s false, they can be fired. The Washington Post and The New York Times both won Pulitzer Prizes for reporting that bolstered the narrative that Trump and his associates committed treason by working with a foreign government to win an election. The two outlets shared a joint award from the Pulitzer board for national reporting. Posted by: rhennigantx at April 03, 2023 06:18 AM (BRHaw) 48

Google without notifying anyone put a hard limit on the number of files that can be upload by users who have paid for the storage. Single user are capped at that limit while shared accounts are limited on a per user basis. People are grumpy.
In other news that hard limit is 5 million files. In other other news people have more than file million files to store. In other other other news Google has become Oracle. I don't understand Google's rationale for doing this in the first place. I can't imagine Google would do this without good cause - Nah, that is a joke. https://tinyurl.com/38sk7c5s Posted by: Lost in Space at April 03, 2023 06:31 AM (9e/0I) 60

Holy Week
A prayer by St. Bernard of Clairvaux . He lived from 1090-1153 and was the main inspiration for the Cistercian order of monks. You taught us, Lord, that the greatest love a man can show is to lay down his life for his friends. But your love was greater still, because you laid down your life for your enemies. It was while we were still enemies that you reconciled us to yourself by your death. What other love has ever been, or ever could be, like yours? You suffered unjustly for the sake of the unjust. You died at the hand of sinners for the sake of the sinful. You became a slave to tyrants to set the oppressed free. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at April 03, 2023 06:50 AM (88/1G) 77

Posted by: Nevergiveup at April 03, 2023 07:12 AM (pVWRI) I seem to recall at the time that there was a sense of 'Wow, Trump is getting a lot of long time conservatives in on these important positions.' Instead, what it turned out to be was a lot of swamp muck went straight to the positions where they could do the most damage. Back then, the perception was that Trump needed insiders to moderate his 'outsider' image. Instead, it would have been far better to have nothing but outsiders to take the machete to the Insiders. I disagree with the article about the iAPX432. It's not "super CISC" or "anti RISC", it's just CISC, and there are good reasons to expect that CISC is going to be slow.
CISC comes from the observation that, in terms of performance, the hardware giveth and the software taketh away. So, if you want high performance, you want to move as much into the hardware as possible. You see that attitude in things like the context switch instructions that Intels 80286 and 80386 have and, which exist to this day in the latest Intel and AMD processor even though nobody uses them. You also see them in the REP instruction which goes back to the 8086 and which just repeats the following instruction and is intended to be used with the 8086's "string instructions." The thought being that since moving data is something that people do all the time, it would be best to add support for that in the instruction set. Posted by: Cybersmythe at April 03, 2023 10:26 AM (iZEhM) 150
Yet, nobody ever uses those instructions except by accident because they are slow, have always been slow, and are always going to be slow. It's important to understand the reason why they're slow to explains the rise of RISC and RISC's largely undeserved reputation for high-performance.
The reason why they're slow is because at any point in any instruction's execution, the processor could be called upon to stop what it's doing and go do something else. Sometimes, this is because of an external event like a hardware interrupt, and sometimes this is because of an internal condition like a nonresident page exception. What normally happens as a result of one of these exceptions (interrupts are considered a kind of exception) is the processor goes off and does something to handle the exception and then comes back to the point where the exception occurred. For a simple operation, that's easy to do. You just don't let the thing you were doing finish, and then just do it again after the exception handler has been executed. Posted by: Cybersmythe at April 03, 2023 10:31 AM (iZEhM) 151
For a more complex instruction, it becomes arbitrarily difficult. If you're updating the contents of dozens of registers, then it becomes difficult because you have all this state that the hardware has to either record or discard because it's supposed to be transparent to the program.
If instead of one extra complex instruction, you build the same operation up from many smaller instructions, the program counter holds all of that essential state and it is easy to restore that at the end of the exception handler. Which is why the performance advantage of the RISC CPUs is largely illusory. You don't have to use the x86's context switch instructions, so OS implementors don't. Neither Windows nor Linux uses them. Intel and AMD spend a lot more time optimizing the instructions most used by compilers and compiler writers focus on using the fastest instructions. The net result is performance. Posted by: Cybersmythe at April 03, 2023 10:39 AM (iZEhM) 152
@Cybersmythe " Intel and AMD spend a lot more time optimizing the instructions most used by compilers and compiler writers focus on using the fastest instructions."
When they're smart, they do. On the other hand, one of my two interactions with Jobs came when he was trying to get IBM to add a string instruction to one of our PowerPC chips. I was on the team tasked with responding and the net was that if we were to add that instruction we'd be slowing down our chip to almost as slow as Moto's. Apple wouldn't pay to make the modifications, and we wouldn't service them without cash up front, so Apple either had to recompile on the fly or put up with an OS level interrupt to handle the instruction. Apple being Apple, they decided to do the OS interrupt and destroy performance on any program that used that instruction, and given Apple's compilers at the time, too many of them used that instruction.
