  • If you're looking for a big and decently fast SSD with no major flaws for under $200, you're in luck. (Tom's Hardware)

TeamGroup's MP34 is currently on sale at Amazon for $199. For the 4TB model.

It's not a new drive - this range first appeared in 2019 - and it's not PCIe 5 or even PCIe 4. It "only" delivers read speeds of 3.5GB per second.

But it's also not QLC - it's TLC, so generally faster and with a longer lifespan - and it's not DRAMless - it has a proper DRAM cache on board.

At launch the 1TB model cost $160 so prices have come down a lot in the past four years.

The Crucial P3 also offers 4TB for $199 right now, but that is QLC and DRAMless, so the only thing it has going for it is the reputation of the manufacturer: Crucial is the consumer brand of Micron, one of the biggest makers of flash and DRAM chips in the world.

As a secondary drive either one should be fine, but the MP34 should also deliver the goods as a primary drive if you don't need bleeding edge performance.

A year ago 4TB drives like these would have set you back at least $400 even on sale. These are now cheaper than SATA SSDs, and five or six times faster.

10 Evening and morning to all the folken! It was fun hanging out on the movie thread for a while last night. I don't often get the chance to do that.

I'm up about an hour early thanks to Stirling the Great Black Kitten. For some weird feline reason, half an hour ago he was climbing over me in bed, sitting against me, purring, bumping me with his head (and it is a big solid head). I tried not to let him wake me up, but no go. So, coffee, The Time Tunnel on MeTV, and AoSHQ.

Sure, I'll bet he wants breakfast, but he has dry food. And if I reward him like that for waking me up, he'll do it every morning.

13 Plans for the morning: work out (lightly, for the first time in about a week, now that my ribs are okay); light breakfast; out to the Walmart up the highway for a nice drive; then breakfast part two.

I really should change the litterbox out completely. In fact, the two feline thugs need a new box, one with a snap-on lip or edge so they can't kick the litter out of the box so easily.

When we all have a house, I'll have two boxes in different places. If it's a two-story house, I refuse to put one upstairs, though.

I suppose it was mid year 2020 when talk of a vaccine to prevent Covid was in the works. I went to DDG and most likely punched in something like 'vaccine corona-virus' and clicked on the first link presented. It appears from the long essay* I'm reading that efforts to control the flow of information about covid and vaccines had already begun. The search result was not from the USA where it should have originated, but from Australia. An organization dedicated to research in viruses, which noticed that in 20 years of attempts to create a vaccine for corona type viruses the results had all been worse then unsuccessful. At that point in time I swore off taking any vaccine. Thanks to Australia for (so far) staying out of the censorship game.

In the video that recently surfaced Fauci is attempting to coerce a young black man into getting the vaccine and Fauci talks about the 20 years of work on the vaccine. Failing to mention they had all been failures inducing 'enhanced disease' in test animals.

I found the information I needed but evil tech companies conspired with the government to hide the information so that people could not make an 'informed consent' type of decision.

I did a corned beef in a bag in the crock pot yesterday. Got it after 3/17 from $8 to $6 per lb., totaling just over $20. Open faced Reuben later today (w/ kraut/Gruyere/mustard on rye swirl bread and broiled until bubbly burned). Then there's the corned beef hash later in the week. And portions for the freezer, of course.

Ny wife cooks them in a regular pot with a lid. But, she has me put them in to soak in water when I get up in the morning. So they soak about 4 hours before cooking.

Would that help rehydrate them a bit?

Posted by: Bruce at April 02, 2023 06:19 AM (vd8XM)

41 Bean seed coats are designed to be impenetrable to water. A slightly basic solution made with baking soda will pull some of the calcium out of the seed coat allowing water to enter and cook the bean. I am surprised CBD has never mentioned "On Food and Cooking" by H. McGee

I used salted water for two days once, the beans were crunchy even after ten hours in a rice cooker. This last time I used fresh water and the beans doubled in size over the two days, but they still were slightly firm after a six hour cook. I'm thinking it's probably the age of the beans. Maybe I'll actively boil the beans instead of slow cook next time.

60 I always soak dried beans in unsalted water, unless I'm using a pressure cooker, it which case it doesn't seem to matter. Salt seems to makes the pulp of the bean tough, I'm assuming because the dissolved ions interfere with all the proteins and starches so they "stick" to each other in a kind of cross-link. I suppose the soaking is analogous to letting a piece of red meat warm up to room temp before grilling it. If you don't, then by the time the center is cooked nicely, the outer edge is obliterated.

JmT, that is so much appreciated, the comment I mean (the bucks are mucho grande appreciated). My daughter first saw one kitten in that parking lot, back in October, so she went to take a look and found all 6 and Mama. She had just bought kitty food for our indoor kitties so she used some to feed this lot, and then did it every day, sun, rain or snow. I guess we were destined to adopt them. The Mama and one black kitten disappeared early on and it could all be good but being October I don't like to dwell on that.
On a happy note, I can't wait for the kittens.

The network, which already runs 49 schools citywide, had the go-ahead to open a Brooklyn elementary – one of its never-used charters – as well as a Queens middle school for the 2023-24 academic year.

But a lawsuit just filed by the UFT seeks to bar those two charters from sharing space with schools run by the city Department of Education.

Something similar happened in Denver a few months ago. Denver has the highest # of car thefts, so no one expects the police to do much. When a guy's car was stolen, he tracked it using its lowjack (or whatever), then went to get it. He got in a shoot out with the thieves (it was a group of youths) and he killed one of them -- a 12 year old. After the big news splash, the DA declined to prosecute.

We can expect a lot more vigilantism as BLM and Soros DAs have broken basic law and order competency.

Well, if a literal meat sack who hid in his basement can get 81 million "votes," I suppose a greasy, oily, smooth talking sociopath like Newsome can get 100 million votes.

178 “Biden just cut nearly $5 billion in funding for Medicare Advantage, and this is just his first step. The end goal is to get everyone – not just seniors – onto government-controlled, Medicare-for-All plans.”

That probably explains why Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has been one of the biggest proponents for these Biden moves. Medicare Advantage represents a public-private company program that people like with good services and broad support. But that stands in the way of Medicare for All, and some on the left don’t like that.

Advantage is very popular as some clinics now have a one stop shop with all the specialist under the same roof and database.

181 I love how the leftists on nextdoor always say you should call the police when something happens like a vehicle break in or package theft from a porch. Austin PD will be right there... in several hours, if ever. Even if they arrest someone the DA will decline to charge. TX DPS is supposed to be helping Austin PD out since they are short over 400 officers with another 80+ that just retired in March. There is effectively no traffic enforcement in Austin. The homeless are also coming back everywhere...

I'll say, it's almost embarrassing just how good it is, and how much money it saves the enrolled. Private networks with a for-profit motive delivering service that garners five star ratings. All while doing it for less money.

So of course Biden will try to kill it.

Hey, are you in the mood for a cute Swedish movie about murder?

The movie's title is- "Small Town Killers"

The story concerns two couples whose marriages have gotten stale. The two guys decide to get divorced and abscond with the hidden money from their lucrative repair business and live the high life as single guys dating hawt women.

But, while filing for divorce, they find out just how costly it's going to be. Esp. because their wives know all about the "secret" hidden assets.

Now, having screwed up their marriages they get completely blotto and complain about the unfairness of it all, if only they could just get rid of their wives...

One of the husbands gets even blottoer (yes, it's a word!!!), and goes on the dark web to hire a hit man from Russia.

The wives get wind of it and decide to hire their own hit woman. Cuz two can play at that game!

I suppose technically this is a black comedy, but really about the only word for it is "cute."
Some good laughs. Overall light humorous tone. Almost no gore at all as most violence takes place off screen and/or is given a humorous wash.

Check it out. On Shudder.

204 Good morning, good people. Tried the fishing I was talking about, came back in quickly. Damn wind makes casting impossible, even roll casts get the fly blown back in your face or wildly off target.

Plus the wind chill takes all the want to out of it.

So breakfast was a 4 cheese omelet with bacon bits and lightly toasted sourdough bread. Not a bad second choice.

Yep, they still sell "albums" and "singles" but it's now through a streaming service. Mainly Spotify. We're talking big money here. Look at Kanye and Jay-Z, though guys made more money than the artist we grew up listening to ever dreamed of.
