I worked doing clerical work at a family business, and the 2 year old daughter took a shine to me, so her mom put her booster next to my work station so she could play and color.
I gave her a handful of Sharpies and highlighters and a bunch of used printer paper to scribble on, and she also scribbled on herself and the desk. And then got into the stamp pad. Her mom, my manager, was not amused. "But it was educational" "No." Posted by: Kindltot at April 02, 2023 02:05 PM (xhaym) 11

My cousin tells me her trick for painting rooms is to paint naked so she can just shower off the paint. I've never tried this. Way back when, my HS class had a community project to paint some signs. They asked me to paint and I had to beg off and say I'd tape on stencils or something instead but me painting was no good as I'd only be creating a bunch of oops for the skilled group doing touchups to fix.

Painting walls is easy, the only real issue is the molding and floors. If you don't want to remove the molding then use a lot of tape. I suggest removing the molding if you want it to look good and to go faster.

Posted by: REDACTED at April 02, 2023 02:14 PM (us2H3) 29
I've never had great success applying masking tape in a nice straight line and w/o wrinkles so it would actually prevent oops. When I painted my bedroom the window trims had already had paint slopped on them so I didn't worry too much and just used a straight edge and small brush next to them. And took comfort in the "paint on the edges of the ceilings is hard to see, don't worry about it" Since the house is of the vintage to have that popcorn ceiling texture and the ceiling didn't need painted it just gets to sport some color at the edges.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo I deliberately paint all the molding the same as the walls. I think it looks cleaner and less "busy". Plus I don't see a good reason to highlight the molding with a different color. I prefer white for walls, ceiling, and molding. I like the simplicity. I bring the color in via furnishings and artwork. Easier to throw on a slip cover than paint the room. Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at April 02, 2023 02:17 PM (Wy1BU) 34

Posted by: Nevergiveup at April 02, 2023 02:09 PM (Irn0L) Simple solution is to glue battens across the holes on the inside of the drywall, and then cut patches to mostly fit the holes. The battens keep you from pushing the drywall patches through the hole into the hollow cavity behind, and allow you to set the patch so it is not proud from the flat wall. Then spackle in the joint coumpound, cover with tape or mesh if you want and let it dry hard. You want the joint compound to stick out because you are going to sand it flat. Then prime and paint. I suggest you paint the entire wall, in fact, us a different color and call it an "accent wall" they are all the rage and hides the patch better. Lots of sanding by hand later there was still a patch of glue that somehow looked like Elvis Presley in profile. Sherwin Williams is also very good. Since our house is fairly open, I have the same color just about everywhere - Greek Villa, to include the brick on the fireplace and kitchen cabinets. It’s a warm white. I painted the shiplap next to the fireplace and above the built in cabinets Black Fox, it’s a dark grey with brown undertones. I also used this on my island and painted the entire powder room this color. We have 10 foot ceilings so it made that little room very dramatic. Everything is fairly neutral, so I added another neutral for splashes - navy blue. I have a navy blue glass refrigerator and pops of navy in accents in between the whites, grays and tans. It kind of looks like a Pottery Barn threw up in here, as I stand back and look. 😂

If some rough finish on drywall. It can be texture with spackle but putting on a thick coat and using paint brush or sponge to match existing surface.
Posted by: Skip at April 02, 2023 02:56 PM (xhxe8) 98
Tonypete, since you know how to roll a wall, this shouldn't be too tough. Mix a blob of "bucket mud" drywall taping compound into an inch of latex primer in a small bucket along with a splash of water, stir well, and apply to sanded patch area with small roller. This is called a "rollcoat" and it gives the texture of a wall that's been painted before. You'll figure out how to feather the new rollcoat into the existing painted surface; if the texture is too "sharp", a damp sponge will soften the peaks... more to follow...

If a WSJ journalist is in the middle of nowhere in central Russia he is probably working on a story that could be considered espionage. In the west we let that go if you are with the FNM why should the Russians though? Also...you just traded a level Russian operative for a basketball tranny. CBD, here are a few suggestions:
- Prime, sand, and first coat trim on sawhorses prior to installation - Before installing base or shoe molding, get a roll of cheap waxed paper and cut into four 3" wide rolls on your chopsaw. Roll out waxed paper against wall then install base or shoe gently atop it and paint away. When paint is dry, pull waxed paper from under trim. - Caulk top edge of trim to wall prior to finish coat if you want the "pro" look. SMALL bead and tool it with wet fingertip; you can wrap fingertip in old tshirt scraps, dunked in water and squeezed out... more to follow... Rinse thoroughly a gallon can, then remove rim with Swing-Away type can opener and clean old paint you've just exposed. Next, put a 1-1/4" keyring on the wire bail... - Open new can of paint. Using a big slot-head screwdriver and hammer, make 6-8 slots in bottom of groove at rim. One summer I painted structural steel on bridges. Way up on questionable scaffolding with a bunch of other young guys who didn't know any better. Pranking would literally get you killed so we were pretty well behaved.
When the epoxy paint started setting up it got impossible to lay down and getting another bucket mixed up in the afternoon was considered a waste because it couldn't be used up by the end of the day. The brushes would stiffen up and we would put them aside. Some guys would take the brushes and stick them to the beams so that they imbedded themselves. If you ever see a paint brush stuck against a beam way up in the steel of a bridge, that is what that is all about. Posted by: pawn at April 02, 2023 03:25 PM (wsHtO) 160

64 Typing of First World problems, I just read an article about the arrests of two Asheville, NC residents in Norwalk, Conn. for cutting more than 2,000 fiber optic cables. 40,000 people lost their internet connections. The perps were arrested on Saturday and bail was set at $200,000.00. Why would fiber optic cables be targeted?

CBD, cont'd:
- Buy a good 2" angled-tip sash brush and take care to clean it well when finished for the day. - Put thumb of "dumb" hand thru keyring of workpot, and fingers under pot; you can paint all day without discomfort by limiting paint to an inch deep in pot. - Drop brush into workpot between passes; if bristles are completely submerged, you have too much paint in pot. - To apply paint, lift brush from pot and gently slap it against inside of pot just above surface, left then right. This leaves the right amount of paint in bristles; DO NOT wipe brush on inside of rim, as you'll remove too much paint from bristles and you'll make a mess of the pot. - At end of day, return any paint in pot to original can and reseal. Take workpot and brush to sink and use dishsoap and a wire brush to clean every speck of paint from brush; a scotchbrite works great on the inside of workpot. - I'll not get into painting technique here other than "paint to a wet edge" and to hold a trim brush like a big pencil, with body of brush between thumb and fingers. A good brush and good paint will flow magically and allow you to cut a clean edge. Posted by: Cowboyneal at April 02, 2023 03:39 PM (DzsA0) 199

Somebody stole the catalytic converter from the local Ace hardware's truck they use for deliveries. It was sitting out in the middle of the parking lot with the exhaust pipe hanging down. One for that truck is probably $1000.
They have so many people standing around doing nothing, I don't know how they stay in business. Posted by: fd at April 02, 2023 04:04 PM (iayUP) 249
I have an electric Milwaukee weed whacker mostly because I didn't want to deal with pouring gas into the little basin of a gas version, and was hoping it would be a bit less noisy.
Just remember: if you are buying power tools, you are not buying a tool, you are buying a battery family. So I have a shitload of 20/40V DeWalt (drills, recip saw, hedge trimmer, angle grinder, weedwacker, oscillating saw, I'm sure I'm forgetting some things), and a bunch of DeWalt batteries, and a few 12V Milwaukee because they had little stuff I needed (1/4in power ratchets, etc.) that DeWalt did not. The two violations of that rule are a Dremel (were I doing that again right now I'd buy a Milwaukee grinder but they didn't have it back then) and a Ryobi mower (huge battery, mower was about $350 but an additional battery right now would be $225). And a scattering of Harbor Freight Bauer stuff I needed to work on a rental property 600mi away and it's not practical to fly with a pile of Li-Ion batteries, I just leave the stuff there. Most of it is pretty good, the angle grinder weak but it works if you're patient. And the batteries are CHEAP. Posted by: JEM at April 02, 2023 04:04 PM (8erNz) 250
Fiber optic cuts usually take at least 24 hours to fix. They don't just take down internet. They can take down cell towers too.

There's a recent 14-minute "Stories Of Us" video at PragerU that I enjoyed (he's quite articulate, bright, and clearly grounded) -- entitled "How Wokeness Killed Country Music" -- where "Country singer-songwriter John Rich "shares his moving story of how he got his start in music, dealing with failure, and never bending a knee to the woke mob."
That was well worth watching. Thanks much. Posted by: Notorious BFD at April 02, 2023 04:14 PM (Xrfse) 252
I've found the solution for painting baseboard. I came upon it when I had about 100' of soffit to replace. It was simple. I put up 3 saw horses. I put the boards on it and painted each one with a coat of primer and two coats of finish. THEN I INSTALLED IT. it's a hell of a lot easier to do it that way than crawl on the floor or climb a ladder, put a bunch of tape up, paint, and then pull the tape. Nail spots and cut edges can be quickly touched up.
