Spring Is In the Hare Cafe

scottishlandscape.jpg
Scotland

Superman shepherd.

A menacing gang swaggers down the street.

Who runs Bartertown?

Lamb with a warm smile.

Kitten discovers that you are the obstacle that's in your way. This puppy has a more evolved relationship with his shadow-self.

ICYMI: Capybara catwalk.

This dude makes ping-pong look cool.

Crow reads an Aesop's fable, thinks, "Hey, that's a pretty good idea, that could actually work."

Old but good: Gimme three fingers of milk and a chaser of milk.

It was the last time you had a crush on someone. The last time you first drank a beer or stayed out all night.

Last time you got to enjoy life as a kid before the world started chewing you up.

136 "Dazed and Confused" is a masterpiece, but the abortion subplot in "Fast Times" is awful. Trivializing child sacrifice will never not be repulsive. And from a tonal standpoint, that entire subplot is out of sync with the rest of the film.

When it comes to '80s movies about coming of age and losing one's sense of innocence, "Risky Business" is the king of the castle. The fact that Paul Brickman only got to direct two movies is a crime. But he didn't enjoy his experiences in the industry, and I can't say I blame him.

179 Re the beer train derailment.... back in 1978 a train derailed about 2 blocks from our house. Rumors spread all over town that the train was carrying beer and dozens of local teens flocked to the wreck looking for the beer. (I was 14 at the time but was not one of them) Don't think they found any beer though.

187 @154, wrong so wrong. The world wars destroyed the best of England's young men , and the rest of Europe's as well. It's why we have to stop our war machine government from continually chewing up our young and brave in stupid places.
Posted by: Indignacio Vindacatorem at April 03, 2023 08:32 PM (oWBc3)

Its not the men who died, plenty survived the war. It was the government and the bureaucrats that survived and crushed out any opportunity for normal folks to thrive that destroyed that nation.

Our goverment is using low casualty, brushfire wars to do the same thing, but its the Government that was the problem.

Look at England in 2016 - they broke out of the EU via Brexit at great struggle, only to be betrayed by both parties to put them back under control for good. Now they are jailed for training puppies or not wanting to have sex with men in dresses.

A fraternity brother was hitchhiking back home during Spring break. His first ride dropped him off in Deer Lodge, home of the Montana state penitentiary. No one was going to pick up a hitchhiker there.

He had to walk a few miles and got a ride to Warm Springs, home of the state mental hospital. Again no one is picking up hitchhikers near there.

He finally got picked up by the Montana Highway patrol and they dropped him off on the east side of Butte.

A freezer truck crashed at the entrance to the Mobile Bay tunnel on I-10 once. Cases of frozen beef were scattered all over the interstate and traffic was halted. The police told all the people stopped by the wreck that they could load their cars with all they wanted as it would have to be written off anyway.

A quick way to get the road cleared.

WWII was fairly light casualty wise for the West - England lost virtually nobody until 1943. Nothing like WWI. And nothing at all like what the Russians were involved with from 1941-45. They were going through shelters when they recaptured a town to find men to pad out the infantry battalions.

England in particular also had in the 44-45 a deficit in pure infantry, but only that. "Specialists" units like Tanks, Arty, Air Forces were full but its Infantry that does the bleeding and takes the casualties. They were short there only because they didn't want to take the pain to disband the excess specialists to plump out the infantry.

Rome in both the Punic Wars took horrendous casualties and came out of it stronger than it went in. Cultural rot comes from the top down.

One thing the ACW did is that it surely put a big check on the planter class / crazy political class of the South, radical slavers or moderates. Many were shot as officer was a dangerous profession in those days. Late in the war a dude named by his father "States Rights Gist" died leading his units against a fortified line at Franklin TN.

I used to work in what is called "human services" which is a nice way of saying we worked with broken people.
There is a tendency to focus on the job and the people you are around all day, and since we are people we tend to see them as our peers, or at least, what average people are.

I call it the "house painter's perception" If you paint houses for a living, you seen nasty checked and worn out paint on houses from about a foot away all day, and when you drive home your perception is that all the houses on all the streets need painting because that is when you have been seeing close up. (I painted houses for a summer too)

It is important to remember what is in your face is not normal, and doesn't have to be accepted as normal or "typical" for your life.
