Rumors Swirl: Kathleen Kennedy Was Summoned Into Bob Iger's Office and Read the Riot Act

Some background:

"Dicktor Van Doomcock" (possibly a pseudonym) and Kamran Pasha have previously claimed, citing sources in Disney, that Disney is planning to get rid of Kathleen Kennedy via a "Viking funeral" at the next Disney celebration (in May). At the Disney celebration, the company will praise her for her long history of fetching coffee for talented men who produced huge hits, and then overseeing, on her own, one chaotic, hugely expensive production after another with dramatic firings and reshoots and widespread fan alienation and disappointing box office returns and ultimately killing the Star Wars brand under piles of #Girlboss political messaging.

What a career!

Then she would soon after announce her own decision, which she totally decided of her own volition (wink), to leave Disney to pursue her own artistic ambitious. Spoiler, none of her ambitious are artistic. They all have to do with politics, feminist spite, and ego.

Disney also struck some deal with her to co-produce four films with her, per this story. (Not Star Wars or LucasFilm properties! Her own stupid #girlpower movies.)

And that would be, as they say in Hollywood, a wrap for Kathleen Kennedy's mismanagement of LucasFilm.

It was previously claimed that while she agreed to this choreographed exit, she has lately been attempting to weasel her way out of it, and get the Viking tribute part of the funeral without the funeral -- she wants to stay at Lucasfilm and continue ruining Indiana Jones and Star Wars.

But Chapek and then Iger remained firm on the "funeral" part of the plan, and told her no, she had to go as previously agreed.

In the meantime, Disney has cancelled plans for an Indiana Jones tv show for Disney+, which would have, one guesses, starred Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the new improved female "Indiana Jones."

Reportedly, Disney just fired hack writer Damon Lindelof, who was talking to the press about the new Star Wars script he was writing, and fired his writing partner, whose name escapes me. Iger (or another chieftain at Disney) told him he had no deal and that he should stop claiming he was writing a Star Wars script. This is in the context of, supposedly, Chapek and then Iger telling Kennedy she no longer had any power to start any productions without their permission, but Kennedy supposedly blowing this off and making deals behind their backs anyway.

Last week, Iger -- under pressure from Nelson Peltz, who may wind up evicting Iger's yes-men board if Iger doesn't stop losing investors money -- fired an "untouchable" diversity executive at Disney, Victoria Alonso, and kicked her ass out with either no payout or a small enough payout that she doesn't mind forfeiting it by threatening a lawsuit against Disney.

That brings us to the new news. Both Dicktor Van Doomcock (possibly not his real name) and Kamran Pasha have sources who are telling substantially the same story, with different levels of detail, about a meeting between Iger and Kennedy this past week. However, the confirmations are not so airtight that they're willing to say that this information is actually confirmed. It's still "rumor," albeit rumor that is more credible than most.

In this video, they disclose the following new claims:

The meeting was a locked-door office confrontation.

Kathleen Kennedy was "shellacked" by the meeting.

Iger told Kathleen Kennedy that Indiana Jones was "a mess" and wanted it straightened out, particularly the ending.

The reason that both Von Doomcock's and Pasha's sources know about this, supposedly, is that she was so angry that she's been ranting about the meeting around the offices, so many people know about it.

Iger told Kennedy that Indiana Jones had to be profitable -- no "just break even" would be accepted. He told her the movie had to make at least $900 million, or Kennedy will not be allowed to just retire via the "Viking Funeral" plan, but will instead be publicly fired and "publicly shamed."

The implication is that they will revoke the planned retirement bonus they were planning to pay her.

Kathleen Kennedy, who has been reshooting and reworking this finished-but-not-really-finished movie for something like a year and a half, then began asking for the film to be delayed still further to allow time for even more reshoots and reworkings. Iger refused her the extra time (and money) for such additional bites at the apple.

Pasha has another scoop, this one only coming from his single source. LucasFilm "hired" a woman to produce a new show called The Acolyte, whose creator and showrunner was... Harvey Weinstein's former assistant. Wow, can Kathleen Kennedy pick 'em.

The woman turned down another offer she already had, to produce Colin Farrell's new Sugar detective show for Apple TV, to take this "job."

Then Kathleen Kennedy and LucasFilm told her there was no job. They offered her the insulting non-settlement of $5,000, despite the fact that she probably had been promised one half to one million by LucasFilm, and had walked away from a similar offer from Apple TV to take the non-existent LucasFilm job.

This woman hired a lawyer and sued. This is rare; usually these things are worked out behind the scenes. The speculation is -- this is only speculation-- that Kathleen Kennedy just doesn't have the authority to make the deals she keeps making, and could not greenlight The Acolyte, and could not then hire a producer for it. Thus, there was no money available for this "job" the woman was offered, and so LucasFilm had to claim the job just doesn't exist.

This speculation is fueled by the notion that in this type of clear breach of contract, usually the studio would pay out several hundred thousands to make the problem go away privately. Not a measly $5000 in petty cash.

So here's the new scoop from Pasha: Iger told Kennedy to settle with this woman to make the lawsuit go away Mostly Peacefully. And he told her that the money for the settlement would be coming out of Kathleen Kennedy's salary, not Disney's funds.

Wow.

Again, this stuff is in the category of rumor. Pasha's source "sparrow" is one that he's confirmed the identity of, but that doesn't mean that everything "sparrow" says is true.

Will these aggressive moves, if true, save Disney?

I sure hope not!

Die, Mouse, Die.

And some of it is weirdly contradictory. Like if Kennedy was off the reservation for Acolyte, why would DIsney offer *anything* as a settlement rather than instruct the person to sue Kennedy for acting without authority and defrauding her?

And why the song and dance? Are they so worried about Indy 5 that they are reluctant to fire her right now? Per this speculation, they're perfectly willing to fire her, so why drag it out like they are?

It could all be true, and there could be factional chaos in the House of the Mouse, or it could all be bullshit, or anywhere in between.

112 My imperfect understanding is that Doomcock has a fairly miserable track record of predictions.

Its mixed, some stuff he's gotten spectacularly right, because he has actual people working in the studios slipping him inside info. Sometimes he speculates and gets it very wrong.

But this is important to emphasize: He always frames this information very carefully, repeatedly, and clearly with "This is based on rumor or insider tips and may not be accurate, take this with a grain of salt". He's not doing Posobiec "I HAVE THE SCOOP NOBODY ELSE DOES!" Gateway Pundit stuff here. He makes it very, very clear that this may not be accurate and you shouldn't bet the farm on any of it.

Which reminds me of the scientist who had trained a flea to jump on command. The scientist would command the flea, "Jump flea!" and the flea would jump. Then the scientist would proceed to pull off one of the fleas legs with a pair of tweezers and write a comment in his notebook. The scientist did this many times until the flea had only 1 leg left. The scientist commanded, "Jump flea!" and the flea made its best effort to jump, which the scientist recorded in his notebook.
After he pulled off its last leg, the scientist again commanded the flea to jump, and after repeating the command many times without the flea responding he jotted down in his notebook, "After the flea loses all of its legs it becomes completely deaf."

What irritated me about that show was that the producers worked with the network to get them the set amount of time to end the story "right". It was the agreement for the final two seasons.

And then the final two seasons were just completely random and dumb, like even after they were told, "Here's 2 years to come up with a plan that ends," they had no idea what to do.

Whatever. I watched it years after it came out, all in the span of a few weeks. It's not like I invested years of my life wondering about all the unexplained mysteries.

Pretty sure the German for "bat" is just an older dialect holdover for the fleder vs fliegen, similar to "fled" vs "fly" in English, even though those used to be synonyms. 153 Kathleen Kennedy is an anti-male, she's misandrist. She despises men and all things masculine and goes out of her way in every moment to attack, denigrate, destroy, tear down, mock, and try to eliminate men. And as a result her movies feel like anti-male tracts that nobody enjoys.

Plus she follows the feminist hero's Mary Sue journey map to a T.

They crave the thrill of the transformations in and of themselves, and will cycle them at whatever frequency their individual madness naturally resonates. They are gender oscillators. They could but even that would be poking up the stink pile.

Just set it later and be done with it. Luke Skywalker and the crew are heroes of olden times, but the forces of chaos plunged things into darkness a hundred years ago and now the ancient powers are once again engaging in battle for the fate of all that is. Doesn't need specific callbacks to the new trilogy. Just pretend it never happened. Hand-wave it away with generalities and get down to business.

And wait at least 10 years before trying it.

Like the first Rey star wars, it copied the old movie pretty completely and had a 90s preachy message rather than modern one, so it was cozy and familiar. it didn't directly attack the audience at least.

It took a while for the warts on the Rey Wars show to start to become apparent, perhaps the same will happen to Avatar.

181 True - 7 and 8 were average to bad movies but having to bring it together in 9 made for the worst blockbuster movie I've ever seen in the last decade - directors just ignored each other, so there was no payoff to anything for anyone...it's one of the few "F" trilogies I've rated and seen...

It wasn't simply ignoring things- Episode 9 was so bad I am certain the corporats took one look at the trajectory for TLJ and said "well, we're fucked unless we slash out the woke and nostalgia bait until the bitter end."

But there was no salvaging Rey. No one gives a shit about what the Rey Era will look like, and turning her into a Palpatine villain will only alienate the NUWars fans who love the new direction. That is why they have to lean so hard on the Mandalorian and non-Rey properties.

The only way I'd sniff Star Wars again is if they start over with Luke and Mara, Han and Leia, and big happy families. Give me lots of Skywalker and Solo children to build future stories around.

236 Donald Trump wanted assault weapon ban gun control law while in the White House tinyurl.com/5n7pt5ne

As president, Donald Trump privately pushed for banning AR-15-type rifles, according to a new report. Trump was and is a big defender of Second Amendment rights. So the new revelation is surprising that he tried to renew the assault weapon ban during his first two years in office. The news about Trump is buried in Washington Post on Monday about AR-15 style rifles. The report says he tried multiple times in 2018 & 2019 to get support for a federal assault-weapon ban.

"I don’t know why anyone needs an AR-15" Trump told aides as he flew on Marine One to the White House in Aug 2019, according to a person who heard his comments. As one former official put it "His reflexes were a New York liberal on guns. He doesn’t have knee-jerk conservative reflexes."

Trump ultimately stopped entertaining the idea of working with Democrats on gun control later that year, when he was caught in a scandal over his now-infamous phone call with Ukraine’s president. "Fuck it, I’m not going to work with them on anything. They’re fucking impeaching me" Trump said

244 Yes, the Captain Marvel family (which is what he was before Marvel sued) has always been a thing in the comics. Mary Marvel is well known.

Captain Marvel jr was for a while the best selling comic, even better than OG Captain Marvel. Both outsold Superman regularly.

I hate the "family" concept, and I never liked a bunch of Captain Marvels running around. It dilutes the concept. The only reason it was done was because kids loved comics (boys and girls) and sidekicks became all the rage. Mary Marvel was the most mature of them all, she was older in her human form.

Its like the Green Lantern corps, its the biggest weakness of the entire character concept. You took an interesting, unusual character concept and made him... one of a zillion stupid looking alien space cops.

Posted by: Nova Local at March 28, 2023 04:45 PM (exHjb)

Which is exactly my point- yet the synthesis of the new movies is that Rey Skywalker (HORF) can easily stroll in and fix it. Andor follows a supporting character from the pre-Luke era, affirming and crystallizing the conceit behind the Star Wars franchise. Which is that it HAS to be absolutely frozen in time.

They can't have a setting with a prosperous Republic and a marginalized Sith. The only movie that even tried to make it happen was Phantom Menace. The post-sequel era would be about Rey swanning around and stomping overmatched Imperials, or whatever pathetic neoliberal government she happened to prop up.

Now arguably Electronic Arts (!!) and Bioware did a better job, but that's the point. It's all "Legends" now and I'll be astonished if Disney doesn't find a way to retroactively ruin it all.

The best way to approach these mega franchises is to take smaller risks.

Make a smaller movie in the same universe but give it to someone with their own vision. Spend $25 million to make the movie, let the name open it at the box office, and if people like it, make more. The franchise name alone will be enough to guarantee a return on investment.

Instead, every single movie HAS to end up being a billion dollar movie just to break even. It's bloat chasing guaranteed failure.

OMG I hope this is true. They've been pegging the Indiana Jones property for ages now, and there's absolutely no way Kennedy can achieve a $900 million Indy 5.

That's arguably what they're doing on TV, but it won't work. Former core fans are not coming back, and the current fans are just going to move on to Next Product like the sheep NPCs that they are. Even if it could work, contemporary Star Wars has to answer "Where's Rey" and "Why isn't the Republic fixing this" for anything set after Episode 9. More importantly, the more they rely on prequels to carry their franchise, the more people will realize that Disney simply cannot more forwards with the property. It's over.

314 WaPo: Say, you know who wanted an assault weapons ban? by Cam Edwards BearingArms.com

I’m still wading through the WaPo"s 10-part hit piece on the AR-15 released on Monday, but reporter Emily Miller has discovered this little nugget. According to the Post, back in 2019 Trump floated the idea of banning modern sporting rifles in 2019 just months after the ATF enacted a ban on bump stocks under his watch.

Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesman, did not respond to detailed findings in this article but said that "there had been no bigger defender of the Second Amendment than President Trump."

That's an interesting non-denial on the part of Cheung. While Trump’s record on the 2A has to take into account his judicial nominations which have been a boon to gun owners nationwide his administration did enact a gun control law through regulation; one that the Fifth Circuit says was beyond the ATFs authority. And the Post’s reporting on Trumps supposed desire for a gun ban does kind of fit with some of his other comments while in office, including his endorsement of red flag laws following the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in 2018.

The worldbuilding in SW was always pretty lame and then two sequel series' bending and breaking what there was left hasn't helped matters. There's just not enough meat on the bones to build on.
Posted by: Oldcat

Because the original SW was a one-and-done film. I don't give a fuck what that pompous fatass Lucas claims now. It was NEVER written as the first part of a series. The big tell is that Obi Wan refers to Vader as "Darth", using Darth as his first name. Yet later, it's retconned into a Sith title.

If the original idea didn't require "world-building" to work, then it probably wasn't intended to have it in the first place. The John Wick franchise is the only one I can think of where it started as a one-and-done, and then was expanded SUCCESSFULLY via world-building. And even the JW franchise came awfully close to crashing and burning with JW2, the awesomeness of Reeves shooting bad guys in the face pretty much saved it.

You have to space it out more. They're throwing content at Disney+ at record paces. It's hours of shit that never supports the actual story (I suppose Andor does, but I haven't seen it), and it all becomes a drag.

Alternate years. Year 1: Epic huge "saga" entry.
Year 2: Smaller, experimental movie.

I think they were going to try this with both Rogue One and Solo, but massive reshoots took the films from Mid-budget large movies to massive movies that needed to make at least $750 million to break even. It worked reasonably well with Rogue One, but Solo just flopped.

Don't reshoot your whole damn movie because you hired comedic directors and they made a comedy.

368 How is the worldbuilding in Prometheus?

Posted by: Inogame at March 28, 2023 05:06 PM (53oGX)

369 Because the original SW was a one-and-done film. I don't give a fuck what that pompous fatass Lucas claims now. It was NEVER written as the first part of a series. The big tell is that Obi Wan refers to Vader as "Darth", using Darth as his first name. Yet later, it's retconned into a Sith title.

-----------------

The love triangle between Leia n Luke meant that Leia was not his sister at the time. Vader was not Luke's father, because it makes no sense Luke would be "in hiding" with his aunt and uncle under his real name and be wanting to join the Imperial Navy.

Vader was also more like a nasty SS trooper colonel rather than an all powerful demigod. The dude giving him lip and Tarkin ordering him about show that.

370 There's a part of me that thinks that comic book movies are dumb and there's only so much Star Wars and Indiana Jones plots that would be compelling.
Harrison Ford is ancient, time marches on (your face), and perhaps these franchises would be on deaths door with the best guiding hand available.
It's alternate universe speculation now since Kennedy left them in ruins but maybe there's just not a "there" there anymore.

That's the problem with character centric universes. Comic book movies can get away with reboots more easily because the comic books themselves do it all the time to the point where there's no use trying to follow continuity or canonicity.

However Star Wars is so intimately tied up with Luke Skywalker that it's difficult to really imagine the universe without him in it somewhere. Indiana Jones is right there in the name. The world he lives in is pretty cool, drawing from classic pulp fiction, but again it would be hard to create a self-sustaining universe in which he's A character but not THE character...

The problem was The Mummy. Just all wrong as an action adventure/American Werewolf in London thing.

Horror movies make consistent money, but they don't make Marvel money. Pushing out $30-50 million Universal horror movies that are actual horror movies could work as a business plan. Trying to turn them into $200 million adventures was a mistake. Hell, the Brendan Fraser Mummy movies weren't even that big, especially the first one.

Fans want us to believe it was the Force that made the storm troopers so terrible and unable to hit anything. That the force made them one-hit wonders, where a single blaster shot always dropped each one.

But its just the genre Lucas was trying to do: the Saturday Matinee serial where it was a cheap, simple, fun story for kids and you didn't think things through too closely because it wasn't meant to be analyzed and torn apart and thought through.

The entire thing falls utterly to pieces when the Clone Wars happen and every single jedi in the universe except Ben Kenobi are killed by... wait for it... storm troopers.

An informed attribute that we don't see in the movies themselves.

To their credit, several of the books in the EU, especially those written by Zahn, will show competent, capable stormtroopers that kick significant ass.

In some ways you are probably right. Just about anything can be created via CGI these days, so filmmakers don't have the same limitations they have when working with practical effects.

Sometimes boundary conditions are necessary to unleash true creativity. A small movie on a limited budget for effects can become a powerhouse (e.g. Blair Witch Project, which spawned its own subgenre).

Hollywood seems to have forgotten that.

441 Q: Can anybody tell me if StormTroopers have ever won a shootout?

Leia: “They let us go. It’s the only thing that explains the ease of our escape. “

The first movie established the troopers as extremely competent when they boarded the corvette in the opening sequence. We were supposed to be suspicious when nobody got shot on the Death Star.

Woke leftists keep making terrible films that nobody wants to see.

Perhaps because their view of the world is fundamentally artificial and at odds with human nature. The same reason that point of view is ruinous for companies and governments. The approach can only be sustained temporarily by cannibalizing what was created by the non-woke.

451 Look, I WANT Disney to be saved.

And I want that to happen specially because they fire a lot of stupid diversity hires.

That will give the message to other studios - this shit does not make money and will require a very expensive firing and contraction cycle to get past it once it is entrenched.

I want them to be an example, so searingly terrible, that every studio forever after will avoid this crap.

Heck, if we could just get movies without messaging that would be a nice start.

How about a movie studio that fires ANY employee that criticizes the fans?

453 By the time I post this, it will probably be the 400th or so comment, but I'm going to do it, anyway.

I am in the middle of listening to a series of podcasts - they're three years old, so I'm veru late to the party - about production designer and producer, the late Polly Platt.

Ever wonder why Peter Bogdanovich went from a string of hit movies in the early 1970s to a string of failures for the next four decades, until his death last year? It turns out that on his hit films (The Last Picture Show, What's Up Doc?, and Paper Moon) his collaborator was his then wife, Polly Platt.

After her divorce, were all of the movies she worked on hits? No, but people who worked with her on the hits (like The Bad News Bears, Terms of Endearment, and Say Anything) say her contribution to them was substantial.

I just wish we had actually creative women making movies today, rather than K. Kennedy types. That's all I have to say.

454 I mostly watch 80s dudes like Van Damme, Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Dolph Lundgren kick ass on people in old movies, because it's the same thing as these comic book thing, but way less, you know... gay.

457 Honestly, John Wick and Top gun are the bonfires on which they burn woke. Two movies with modest budgets that made a shit ton of money, while entirely avoiding woke messaging.

How can you look at the performance of those two movies, compared to anything else, and not think...we are doing something very wrong.

Same story with George Lucas and his wife Marcia. She was a film editor, and apparently Star Wars was a mess till she got hold of it. She also did American Graffiti, and Taxi Driver. She also famously fixed Indiana Jones.

After the divorce she quit films to spend her time raising her family. Pity.

Posted by: Inspector kemp at March 28, 2023 05:40 PM (+DS2f)

461 I operate on the principle that any movie made after about 1960 is probably crap.

Posted by: Weasel at March 28, 2023 05:41 PM (RG6z4)

462 Kennedy arguably made every single thing worse by her involvement. The only decent Star Wars productions were those where her involvement was minimized.

What makes woke movies bad, mostly is 1) lecturing the audience 2) overly constraining the narrative. You can't have a bad woman, or person of color for example. You can't even show them making mistakes. They must be the flawless heroes. It just doesn't make for good movies.

Indiana jones - snakes. he hated snakes. He also plans by the seat of his pants. If it was a woman, she can't possibly be afraid of snakes, or spiders, or whatever. And she has to show how smart she is by having a brilliant plan.

Luke in Star wars, naive, optimistic, untrained. Rey is perfect in every way and needs no training.

464 Again, Doomcock has been predicting the Imminent Ouster of Kathleen Kennedy for literally years. He's a joke among industry watchers who are not rabid basement nerds.

The thing to remember about adult fans of these franchises is that they're overly invested in these children's films, to the point they'll project what they _want_ to happen on any half-baked rumour they hear because they need it to be true. I'll believe KK is getting fired when I see her walked out of Skywalker Studios by security.
