My 88 year old neighbor went into hospice care and they gave him three months to live. He came home four months later and lived for three more years outliving his wife. Every time I saw him I would say....you look pretty good for a man that is supposed to be dead.

Hospice mostly means they are no longer trying to prolong life or cure disease. They merely make you comfortable and treat immediate symptoms like pain. Or a uti or upper respiratory infection.

Lots of folks, after stopping something like chemo, feel a ton better in the short term and that translates to a higher quality and longer life than they would have had if they had continued active disease treatment.

That was my grandmother. She had leukemia and the doctors convinced her to do the chemo thing when we all said just let it go and stay home. She had a stroke during chemo one time soon after she started and died. I still feel that she would have had at least another year or so if she hadn't gone that route. But that's probably me being selfish.

She is no longer responding, which she was doing last night a little. I think I am seeing mandibular breathing now, too. Nurse, you can probably explain this for me. I have often heard the definition you gave for hospice care, but my one experience with it was vastly different. The patient's feeding tube, O2 and IV was immediately removed and they were just given morphine. It took three or four days for them to pass away and I always felt that they died because of that treatment and not necessarily because of their underlying condition. Are there different levels of hospice?

Hospice is end of life care to keep the patient comfortable. If a decision was made to take a person off of life support care then hospice will make sure that the path feels as least amount of pain as possible.

When we brought dad home for the end, hospice gave us liquid morphine which was a wonderful help for dad's pain.

There are different 'companies' that do Hospice care... with different guidelines.

the two times I've dealt with Hospice... two different companies... part of the end of life care is due to the patients and families wishes.
