Fired Woke "Gay Latina" Victoria Alonso Threatens Legal Action Against Disney; Disney Says She Committed a Clear Breach of Contract
I mentioned that Alonso is a "gay Latina" (not "Latinx," bigot?) because her own lawyer is apparently making the case on just that. That Disney "silenced a gay Latina."
Another wokie using her sexuality as a sword and her race as a shield. Disney fired her, they claim, because she breached her contract. Disney had an exclusive deal with her, but she produced the film Argentina 1985 for a rival studio. That's a breach right there. Disney then told her not to promote that film or any other rival studio's films. But she went out on the red carpet and promoted the film anyway. Disney fired her, citing this as their reason. This is what her lawyer calls "silenc[ing] a gay Latina."What they're suggesting -- and Midnight's Edge agrees with this -- is that the breach of contract is just a pretext for the firing, not the real reason. Midnight's Edge points out that as far as pretexts for firing go, this is a bulletproof pretext. If you're exclusive with one studio you're not allowed to work with another or promote a rival's films, period. But they also agree that the bulletproof pretext was used to hide the more serious reasons for firing. Like the fact that she went out on the red carpet to attack Disney for not being pro-gay enough, and bragging about how she browbeat Bob Chapek into getting into an extremely costly fight about the Parental Rights in Education bill. Which the Midnight's Edge people think cost them "billions" or even "tens of billions" due to the loss of control over the Reedy Creek district.
After being fired from her longtime role as Marvel's VFX and postproduction president, Victoria Alonso is ready to fire back against claims about why she lost her job. Patty Glaser, Alonso's attorney, issued a Friday statement to Variety denying that Alonso was fired because of her role as a producer on Argentina, 1985. Instead, Glaser claimed that her client was "silenced" by Disney. (And no, she made no mention of the highly criticized visual effects in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.) The Hollywood Reporter first reported that Alonso's involvement in Argentina, 1985 -- which Amazon Studios helped produce -- breached a contract she signed with Disney in 2018 that prohibited work with company competitors. THR claimed the veteran exec was given a pass under the condition that she would stick to Marvel projects moving forward and not promote any other work. Allegedly, Alonso's decision to promote Argentina, 1985 anyway caused her exit. "The idea that Victoria was fired over a handful of press interviews relating to a personal passion project about human rights and democracy that was nominated for an Oscar and which she got Disney's blessing to work on is absolutely ridiculous," Glaser responded. "Victoria, a gay Latina who had the courage to criticize Disney, was silenced."
And apparently she kept talking to the press -- another breach. Or maybe not a breach, but an act of insurbordination against a superior giving her a direct order to stop dragging the company into her private political battles. More here. Citing a report from Puck...
Several outlets have suggested this is a reference to Alonso's comments at the 2022 GLAAD Awards, where she called out Bob Chapek, then CEO of Disney, out for his handling of Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill. Reportedly, she was told after the awards ceremony that she could no longer do press for Marvel.
The report points out that Disney could have simply paid her out for any number of reasons, according to the recent backlash against Marvel VFX in the public eye. According to Puck's Matthew Belloni, the dispute first came up in mid-2021 while renegotiating Alonso's contract, with Disney discovering she had been producing Argentina, 1985 for Amazon Studios, a direct competitor. "Disney's Alan Bergman and Marvel's Kevin Feige were super annoyed at yet another example of Alonso prioritizing her personal endeavors over the company, and the bad precedent it would set for other Disney executives" Despite this breach, Disney granted leeway to Alonso due to her tenure at Marvel Studios and allowed her to keep her name on the project as long as she didn't promote it. In the following months, Alonso would give an interview to Indiewire about the project, as well as attend the BAFTAs in London. These incidents are what ultimately led Disney to let Alonso go.
It's just breach after breach with this bitch, and then she whines that as a Gay Latina she should be allowed to do whatever her ugly heart wills. Note that bit about "they could have paid her out" (or paid her off). Apparently Disney did not give her a big pay-out on the way out the door, or she would not be risking it by threatening to sue Disney and attacking them. It was reported that everyone was present at her termination. Who do I mean by everyone? EVE-RY-ONE. Legal and human resources were all present. Disney seemed to imagine that this was going to be a non-amicable separation, and had all their legal and DEI ducks in a row for the firing.
Her lawyer claims that she was "terminated when she refused to do something she believed was reprehensible." What could that mean? Spread suntan lotion on Bob Iger's luscious manly thighs? The lawyer refused to add details, but the Midnight's Edge guys talked about this. I don't think they actually said it, but the feeling I got from them is that maybe Alonso refused to fire any of her LGBT employees. Iger had ordered the firing of 7000 people, and among those the first to go were many HR people. It might be that Alonso said "over my dead body" will any of the wokies and DEI advisors and "sensitivity readers" at Marvel be fired. And then she was. That's all speculation. They don't know themselves, and they didn't even say that; I'm just guessing that they were driving at that. The lawyer continued making threats:
"Disney and Marvel made a really poor decision that will have serious consequences," Glaser concluded. "There is a lot more to this story and Victoria will be telling it shortly -- in one forum or another."Other reasons for firing Alonso, as noted by the Midnight's Edge guys: Alonso is in charge of special effects, and Marvel's special effects have gotten weaker and weaker, to the point now where people are openly mocking them. Alonso is also in charge of physical production, and Marvel movies have gone greatly overbudget lately, requiring costly extensive reshoots. Marvel movies have just generally been underperforming. Alonso, as Marvel's #2 executive, bears responsibility for that. Combine the dwindling box office with the exploding production cost and you have a problem. Alonso has also repeatedly alienated Marvel's largely straight male fandom by injecting woke politics into everything, including musing that the name "The X-Men" is outdated and sexist, and that Marvel might change the name of the group to "The Mutants" or "The X-People." She is also seen as a big advocate for the M-She-U -- Marvel's remaking itself into a mostly-female-skewing franchise. The last big reason for firing her is that they had to fire someone, so it was either fire her or fire Feige. And they still have faith that maybe Feige can make a movie people will want to see again -- if they get rid of this woke scold, who, they're hoping, is the main problem here. I think they're hoping that this aggressive, butch woman was able to ride roughshod over this weak, retiring, feminine geek Kevin Feige, and he just wasn't man enough to tell her "No." So they think maybe without her there, the division can return to profitability. But Kevin Feige has frequently championed the "M-She-U," so I don't think Disney will get out of its funk just by firing Alonso. A lot of people are now saying that Marvel Phase IV just proves that Feige wasn't actually the guy making the trains run on time at Marvel. Rather, it was people like Jon Favreau and James Gunn and the Russo Brothers. They've left Marvel now, and we can see how well Marvel's doing without them. In more bad news for Marvel: Jonathan Majors, who is intended to be the Thanos of the next few years in Marvel movies, was arrested and charged for being a Big Bad Guy in real life, specifically of slapping around his girlfriend. And "strangulating" her.
The actor Jonathan Majors was arrested Saturday in New York on charges of strangulation, assault and harassment, authorities said. On Sunday, an attorney for Majors said there's evidence that he is "entirely innocent." New York City police said that Majors, star of the recently released "Creed III" and "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania," was involved in a domestic dispute with a 30-year-old woman. Police responded around 11 a.m. Saturday to a 911 call inside an apartment in the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea.The woman may have recanted, but that happens all the time in domestic violence situations. The prosecutor is apparently continuing the prosecution. I don't think they would do so if the video proved he was innocent. But who knows. The US Army had hired Majors to do recruiting commercials, but those ads have now been pulled.
Advertisement "The victim informed police she was assaulted," a spokesperson for the NYPD said in a statement. "Officers placed the 33-year-old male into custody without incident. The victim sustained minor injuries to her head and neck and was removed to an area hospital in stable condition." A representative for Majors denied any wrongdoing by the actor. "He has done nothing wrong," the representative said in an email to the AP on Saturday. "We look forward to clearing his name and clearing this up." On Sunday, an attorney for Majors, Priya Chaudhry, came out more forcefully, saying Majors "is provably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows" and blamed the incident on the woman having "an emotional crisis." Chaudhry said there was evidence clearing Majors, including "video footage from the vehicle where this episode took place, witness testimony from the driver and others who both saw and heard the episode, and most importantly, two written statements from the woman recanting these allegations."

It's likely their only play, or at least the play with strongest possibility of any success.
All three of these things (sexual orientation, sex, ethnicity) are protected characteristics and so a harassment claim *can* be made on that basis. I doubt very much they can prove it - she was a top executive - but it's probably the best play to make.
Not to mention that she get lots of coverage for it, dovetail that into a sympathetic jury thanks to all the sympathetic press, and potentially win if it goes that far. I doubt it will go that far. It will be settled for an undisclosed sum and no admission of guikt.

The Corridor Crew were talking with one of the VFX guys from the Black Widow production, and he described how Disney had no idea how they wanted to put the big final sequence together, so they had to completely render the environment for the entire sequence so it could be covered from any angle with the changes to editing late in the game.
That sounded...very expensive.

Eh...the Russos kind of suck. They did make some of the best of the MCU, but everything since has been kind of awful.
I don't know if it was Feige or another producer who helped hammer the first few phases into shape, but I wouldn't lay too much at the feet of the Russos.

It's boring. Everything is the same, and that's boring. Add in the irritation of the other stuff and it will fall apart. Most Marvel projects have end-of-the-world stakes and ends with a big showdown with a colored CGI beam coming out of the sky or up from the earth.

Yeah. The parts that work best is the member berries stuff with all three spidermen in the thing at once. It's neat, but it doesn't really stand on its own. The other 90 minutes (it's a long movie) aren't all that great.

It just got old, I think the last thing I sat through was the end to the Avengers - and it wasn't that good. All the hype about Black Panther got real old real quick - it was a movie, not a frigging Civil Rights moment.
My point, poorly made as usual - is I should have been their prime target. Plenty of disposable income, and an old school nerd. But if they didn't want to market to me ... who in the Hell did they expect to make money from ?
Because news flash - Millennials and Gen Z are simply not brand loyal. You can't build a multi-picture franchise off those kids. They don't have the attention span for it.

I think the funniest part is that they forced Pixar to be the glorified straight to video animation department, which angered a lot of people at Pixar, not that Pixar was on a winning streak anymore.
But yeah, they'll have to fall back on sequels to stuff they already have and the live action remakes of stuff they already have.
Frozen 3, Toy Story 5 have already been announced. They're not making a live action version of The Aristocats while The Little Mermaid is getting released soon (though Pinocchio went straight to streaming because it was so bad).
They're in a mess of their own making. Some of these projects will still make major money (that stupid Lion King remake made something like $1.3 billion), but the rest of the money makers are breaking even, at best. With rumors that Indy 5 is $150 million overbudget, things are getting sporty.

Agreed. The first one was a great, self-contained ghost story with lots of entertaining farcical elements as CAPTAIN Jack and Captain Barbossa struggled for control of the Black Pearl.
Then they tried to go bigger and badder with movies 2 and 3 while still adhering to that formula. It really didn't work very well.

The biggest star they have is Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, who I've liked as Strange.

Here's the deal - I think what Disney has done is based on a certain level of logic. Flawed logic, but logic all the same. I took the wife and son on a last family outing because he moves out back in January. She wanted Disney. I wanted to retain half my personal property, so we went to Disney.
Two thirds of the park attendees are either Gay and Lez, or Mothers without Husbands. Those husbands may be absentee, out on the golf course instead. Who knows.
And Disney may well have created this ratio with their marketing. But it stands to reason, this may be as simple as catering to their distorted view of their patrons.

Hmmm. Interesting point. I also like Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, though I'm still lukewarm on his first movie (it was OK). Still, with proper writing and setup, I could envision Dr. Strange being the tentpole character for Marvel Phases IV-VI, just as Tony Stark was the tentpole for Phases I-III.

Just finished watching the episode where Bobby was having panic attacks because he was stressed so much because of the responsibility he had for his scholastic team ( he was the entertainment/?celebrity specialist which Hank hated) .
Bobby spontaneously realized that quitting made all his symptoms go away . The non woke part is Hank told him he didn't want him to quit and that stress was just part of life. He then helped Bobby prepare for the tournament. The End.

It wasn't exactly monolithic.
Scorsese loves and loved westerns. John Wayne's image in a magazine is lovingly treated in Who's that Knocking at my Door?, his first film.
John Carpenter loved westerns and kept trying to make them (Assault on Precinct 13 is essentially a modern day western). He loved Hawks westerns in particular.
I would attribute it more to bloat that much else. There were A LOT of westerns made in the 40s and 50s, and most of them were crap. Not all of them were The Searchers or Rio Bravo.

It is now very dangerous to park your car at Portland airport.
Cars parked in the outer lots are now routinely stolen or have their catalytic converters cut off, and even cars parked in the short-term parking garage frequently have their windows smashed and their contents ransacked.

They could have followed the Tim Powers' story more closely. That would have been far better than some stupid haunted light house. Imagine Capt. The weird thing about Onward is that it had two thematic ideas that were in direction contradiction to each other.
The fantasy parts were about looking behind into the past to find meaning, but the stuff with the dad was ultimately about looking forward into the future and moving on.
It made sense to me once I found out that it was originally a science fiction story that they changed in the writing process to be a fantasy story. The science fiction genre would have fit that dad story better.

There were scads of Western TV series in the '50s, with only two half-hours rising to the top, The Rifleman and Have Gun -- Will Travel. Bonanza and Rawhide along with Gunsmoke were hour-long shows (though GS began as a half hour).
Movies, yeah, there were a lot of competent but unexciting films being churned out in the '40s and '50s. You'll see a lot of them on the Grit channel. There was B-movie cream that rose, like Face of a Fugitive w/ Fred MacMurray, but a lot of it was uninspired.

Incidentally, Tarzan was an example (I don't know if the first) of someone milking a concept for EVERYTHING. Borroughs wrote, I think, 27 Tarzan books.
TWENTY SEVEN. I read the first 5 or 6. The first three were good (first two were one complete story. Third was an interesting twist of going back to Africa to save his wife against people with a grudge against him. 4 was, effectively, son of Tarzan. 5 I think was when Tarzan got hit in the head and got amnesia so he could be Tarzan again... At that point I gave up.)

Westerns were grist for the mill of B-movie production from the early days of the sound era. They were made dirt cheap with low talent and designed to be actual B-movies, the bottom half of bills that got packaged all together into block billing that theaters had to purchase if they wanted the A-list stuff. (The Paramount Accords made this practice illegal, along with direct ownership of theaters by studios.)
There were A LOT of westerns, and I think it just kind of became the stuff your dad watched.

I was in middle school when a librarian asked our class if they had heard of Tarzan. Everyone had. Then she asked if we knew it was a book series. A good percentage knew that. She then asked if anyone knew the author's name. Nobody knew it.
The librarian pointed out that Tarzan was a massive hit when it came out, but almost no kids know about the author anymore.
I don't remember what her point was. Maybe it was that doing something well known and popular doesn't guarantee fame?

No. 6 was a collection of short stories about Tarzan's life in the jungle before white people came. He accidentally gets drunk on fermented berries and challenges the moon to a battle.
Eight sent him to an undiscovered world (which happened a lot) in a valley in Africa with still-living dinosaurs. After that, yes, they get a little dull except for Tarzan's Quest (Jane is aboard a plane that crashes in the jungle, and she shows the passengers how to survive!) and The City of Gold, No. 17 or so, that is very exciting.

When I first saw it, I kept thinking "I know this movie - why?" Then realized a lot of it was a scene for scene remake of "The Naked Prey" with Cornel Wilde, shifted back a couple centuries and set in Central America rather than Africa. Well it was a good movie to copy.

I thought it was rather unfortunate of Kenneth Branagh to place him and the other Hollywood actors up against the RSC heavyweights in Much Ado About Nothing. Denzel et al are not Shakespearians.
That was on purpose. The play is a spoof, its mocking earnest dramas, with the main character literally named Hero. Brannagh deliberately cast the wrong people in a bunch of roles like Keanu Reeves, because that's what the play is about.

Each one got several magnitudes worse, and I guess Frazier was really busted up when he made the third one which limited his mobility.
If they had been smart and visionary like Hollywood used to be, they would have made his character the center for a series of monster movies, like Indiana Jones of monsters. Each one stand alone, but with him tying them together.

I would attribute it more to bloat that much else. There were A LOT of westerns made in the 40s and 50s, and most of them were crap. Not all of them were The Searchers or Rio Bravo.

I think a lot of it was just the decline of the old movie system in the 60s. Westerns were good because they filled out the program when movies were very popular, they were cheap since every hill in CA is a western backdrop, and you could train up writers and crews on a formulaic genre.
As TV overtook movies, they didn't need many cheap movies and they kept the expensive movies that could still fill the nightime theatres. But a side effect is that the training pool for the next generation of films was reduced to a trickle.
This time is when most of that trickle is about to or has retired.

Lots of good reasons for background checks. Convicted criminals, nut jobs with mental problems.
The real question is since our current background checks don't keep these people from getting guns, why should we subject anyone else to them?

Liked the performance, but he really isn't a good fit for John Buford in looks. Buford was born in KY but moved to Illinois (as did Lincoln) and I never recalled reading that there was much outlandish in his mannerisms over any other army officer - unlike, say, Custer.

Stand on Zanzibar by John Brunner is a strange book that has a point that is hard to define, but one thing I remember from it was a sharp rise in "muckers" - people would snap and run amuck and start killing.
That part of it is coming true more every day.

But, did you know that "The Mutants" was Stan Lee's original name for the group? They were all mutants, so "The Mutants". Someone complained that people might not know what "Mutant" means so people might not get the name, so Stan Lee came up with "X-Men".
I saw video of him telling the above story, and he finished up by saying: "Then I thought to myself, 'People won't know what X-Men means either' but I didn't say anything."
(All quotes approximate and from memory, and I'm nearly 29 years old so my memory could be faulty)
