Where Is Galileo When We Need Him? Stop The Pendulum!

Is this the typical American pendulum? We often swing from insanity to insanity until we (usually...hopefully) find some relatively levelheaded middle ground.

At first glance that is exactly what it is. Michelangelo's sculpture of the biblical figure David is one of the glories of Western civilization, and arguably* the greatest sculpture ever! The typical 6th grader can find prurience on a box of oatmeal, so concerns that a simple viewing of David and his genitalia are going to sexualize these kids seem overwrought and hysterical. Any competent teacher can control that, explain the historical use of nudity, link the sculpture to the Bible, and then tell the story of David and Goliath!

A principal was fired over 6th graders seeing a photo of Michelangelo's David sculpture

Hope Carrasquilla of Tallahassee Classical School in Leon County is no longer employed by the school. She was given a choice by the school board – resign or be fired. She chose to resign. Why? Well, that is the question. Was it because sixth-graders were shown a picture of Michelangelo’s David sculpture in their Renaissance art history class?

Carrasquilla’s termination was the subject of a last-minute emergency board meeting that was scheduled for 7 a.m. Monday. Three parents complained about the photo being shown in class and how the exposure to the world-renowned classic was handled. The school is a charter school. Parents send their children there for a classical education. Renaissance art history is to be expected as part of the curriculum. These are sixth-graders, not kindergarteners. Typically, sixth-graders are 11 and 12 years old.

Except...is that all that is going on?

Florida school principal resigns after complaints over "pornographic" David sculpture

School board chair Barney Bishop told CBS News Saturday that Carrasquilla was asked to resign over "a number of other issues,'' and the latest incident was the culmination.

He claimed that Carrasquilla knew that if she blamed the Michelangelo photo for her resignation, the "mainstream media" would "twist it" and wouldn't report the truth.

Without more information it is difficult to understand why this teacher was sent packing, and because our experience over the last generation has taught us to discount pretty much everything ever uttered by any official anywhere, we may never know the entire story.

But "Michelangelo's David is not pornographic. Books portraying sex between minors and adults are pornographic, and insidious because they are undoubtedly part of a carefully constructed program to desensitize children to the horror of pedophilia. Viewing an absolutely spectacular sculpture with tremendous historical context is simply part of a well-rounded education.

Would I be irritated if I weren't informed beforehand of the topic and the photo being used? Maybe. Probably not. But I can't speak for other parents, and it is reasonable for those three parents to be irritated.

On the other hand, this will be used by the leftist media to show the evil of "censorship" and how parental notification laws are injuring our children! Which is arrant nonsense and can be refuted with ease.

So what happened? Who the hell knows!

*We can discuss this on The Art Thread...The "Pieta" ain't bad, Donatello's "Mary Magdalene" is in the running, and some guy named "Rodin" did some good stuff! [Just don't mention Duchamp or you're gonna get savaged!]

No. That's not what I wrote.

Pornographic materials designed to groom children, and keeping the use of those materials from the parents is one side of the swing.

The other side of the swing is seeing everything as pornographic grooming and limiting the use of perfectly reasonable material such as the sculpture of David.

Concur. The likelihood of a teacher being fired for merely showing a photograph of Michelangelo's David to students is approximately zero. There's more going on. My guess it that these kids got exposed to more ... diverse ... images of penii and vajayjay. Teacher chick thought she would be clever and use an acknowledged masterpiece of Renaissance art as a fig-leaf to conceal homosexual grooming.

Why resign otherwise? Take the firing and expose (heh) the rubes in court if that's all that happened.

It's fine to disagree in private, but when you've been given clear orders, and you choose to defy them, you should expect bad things will happen. Unless, of course, you assume you answer to no one.

Uh, no.

I think if you are going for 'greatest sculpture of all time' you have to begin and end with Michelangelo. So, my three in no particular order:

Pieta
David (the only one I have not seen in person.)
Moses

Of the three, the David is the only one that does not still retain that shiny, polished, freshly carved look. I kind of have to give the nod to the Pieta. Although it is probably the worst as far as anatomy, the amount of detail is astounding (actually all three are insane, but the folds on Mary's clothes, damn.) Subject matter is also important.

Maybe David's a grower, not a shower?

The art historian argument I have always heard is that Michelangelo is trying to show that David is resolute, but also terrified of facing Goliath (hence showing true courage.)

In general, the art of the period did not go in for either massive wang or huge jugs.

That's partially why there is a paucity of good contemporary art. It's all shock value all the time.

As to whether or not the statue of David is porn, if Confederate General statues are racist, then statues with a dude's junk are porn.

I happen to believe neither of those be true, but either history has value or it doesn't.

Man, I could be totally wrong, but I think that by age 12, all kids are at least aware of the idea that boys have "wieners" and girls don't.

And a great work of art like "David" is probably the most innocuous way that girls could see a "wiener" for the first time.

I suppose parents should be forewarned that nekkid David might appear in a survey of great art. But, with 6th graders, I can honestly say that probably wouldn't occur to me.

Well, that is the question. Was it because sixth-graders were shown a picture of Michelangelo’s David sculpture in their Renaissance art history class?

She should've claimed that David was on his way into the bathhouse to engage in homosexual sex. The school board would have given her a standing ovation and a promotion.

Ha! It's complicated. I ran in some Amish and Mennonite circles at different times in my life. When I was widowed, I hired an wonderful Amish woman to help me keep house. She'd sit and watch the TV religiously when waiting for the clothes to finish drying. Depending on their Bishop (who's word is law btw) their rules are all over the place.

166 I remember our sex education class pretty clearly cuz we had just moved to Corpus Christie.

The girls had it about six months before us in 5th grade.

And the boys had it in 6th grade.

The girls were told to keep it a secret from us boys and were very smug and irritating about their 'secret' advanced knowledge.

187 IDK but I suspect DIE is more flexible & uneven than what we're routinely fed. In that, according to state; type of school; based on the strength of teachers' unions; usually based on local demographics & the degree in which grades lapsed in the 'regular student population' allegedly due to 'learning at home' during C19, and lastly the in-flow of immigrants (again, demographics).

County school districts can often be separated by overall family income, employment of parents, etc. The kids attending the "better" schools where they lean to exceeding reading & math comprehension requirements, have a number of AP courses & a good % of attendees in those courses seems to get DIE lite. However, if the parents fall out of agreement with the school administration & bias can't be easily used by the district, the appropriate/inappropriate library book/sex ed battle creeps in.

The schools where the kids are beating each other & staffs senseless & without fear of being ejected; reading and math comprehension scores are well below average; few few AP courses and a low % of kids that qualify, DEI seems to be a bigger part of classroom "education."

Which means it probably wasn't liberal woke activists sending their children to a Hillsdale school and creating false flags.

My daughter has attended private Christian schools all of her life. Some of her classmates have parents that find Harry Potter books to be evil. There are people out there that hold very stringent views on things, so I don't doubt that some parents may have legit complained.

Still, I don't doubt that this was not the first time the teacher bucked the system, especially given that she was a female art teacher, the unholy triumvirate of wokism (female, artsy, and teacher).

I'm sure she was asked not to display the picture, decided she knew better, and did it anyway. Perhaps that is even the noble stance. But you don't get to tell your employer F U and then expect to avoid the fallout.

I've told many an employer where they can go and what they can do with themselves when they get there, but I did so understanding my employment would be short-lived henceforth.

201 Parkchester in The Bronx and then Stuyvestant Town near the Lower East Side were built by MetLife as model developments for the time. MetLife also built Riverton Houses for the blacks in Harlem with the same idea.

Rents were slightly below market and it was hard to get in. Lots of cops and their families lived in these places. In the beginning, MetLife was ruthless in throwing out families who created trouble.

Robert Moses saw this and thought that government could do this better and in scale, so he had five story walk ups torn down so he could put up projects. Copied across the land.

Moses failed to see a key element in MetLife's success.

I believe this true but I need to nail it down with some resarch.

That's Jonathan Roumie. He steals every scene he is in with the movie Jesus Revolution, too. He has been given a gift to portray Jesus Christ, and convey His message of redemption and salvation to life within a format suited to the post-modern pagan age.

I saw him speak at the National Men's Conference at Cincinnati yesterday. This was Catholic-oriented day-long religious retreat.

He had been at a low-point in his acting career with $20 in his pocket. He prayed and stated that he told God that he was giving-over control to God, and His will be done. A couple weeks later he got called to portray Jesus Christ in a "little" mini-series expected to last four weeks.

Roumie seems like a good guy. He stated that it is extremely humbling to portray Jesus because when he encounters people, they tell him how The Chosen has brought them back to Church, gave them strength at a low point in their life, etc. He ended his talk by saying that the world is being influenced by dark forces and he attempting to do what he can to fight it.

That is frankly, a stupid take, new one-name commentor. That commandment is forbidding worshiping false gods, not forbidding statues of naturalistic subjects. The pagan gods were portrayed with the juxtaposition of human and animal characteristics. Of course, St. Anthony of the Desert tells us that the pagan gods are actually demons (i.e., the fallen angels).

Its a legal blog, run by Prof Jacobson. I thought a basic legal principle was that the law should plain language not obscure metaphors. 5 years for tilting at windmills, probation revoked for counting coup? WTH? Sounds like a backdoor to censor speech you don't.

I really disappointed in these Right wing sites that don't live up to their principles - Powerline, Instapundit, and now Legal Insurrection. What's the point if they're no better than the Leftists. Maybe it is time to let it all burn. regardless of Trump.

I think the management is pushing Jeb Bush and censoring posts critical of him, using dishonest headlines to strawman Trump. You want a preview of how easy its for a good site to destroy its rep, take a look at LI.

238 Hey Paul, you should that the Army's NBC Officer ( nuclear bio chem) advised your government that the children's lungs could not handle an adult dose of CS and would suffocate to death. Your government went ahead and gassed the children anyway.

Something to have some shame about once you're finished bashing religion.

Ya know, I read the some of the people in that cult. Surprising how normal most of them were. They were just lost, like some of us here, myself included. Yah I'm a little uncomfortable defending them, but it's how they've been demonized, like they deserved what happened or something.

It rings true once you remember you're a "deplorable" in the eyes of those that cheered the slaughter.

239 Back when everybody lived on the farm, which was not that long ago, there was no need for sex education. Back in the day, it was not a rare sight to see dogs going at it. Today it's all ovr movies and the internet. Our kids and grandkids are getting sex education way before 6th grade. If you'rea parent or grandparent, face the reality there.
