40 I'm currently watching Retarded Korean Lawyer on Netflix. Or Extraordinary Attorney Woo, whatever it's called.

It's cute. It's stupid in a lot of ways. I hope the Korean justice system doesn't actually operate the way it does on the show. And it's kinda PC in its way. But it's fun. It's light. And the lead actress is super cute. She gets a little annoying from time to time, but the actress is very pretty. Last episode I watched she was wearing a skirt tight enough you could tell she had a nicely toned ass.

102 The alligator was deep fried, in bite sized nuggets.
Kind of a cajun recipe.
I found it chewy, like eating pencil erasers, only cajun spice flavored.
Maybe it was overcooked.
The snake was rattlesnake, we caught it on a trail, cooked it over a fire on a stick.
We were hungry, so, no leftovers.

Loved the great South Korean movie "Old Boy" -- but was totally grossed out by the scene in which the protagonist is sitting at a counter and is served -- and eats -- a meal of live octopus.

[From looper.com:] "The octopus-eating scene is especially notable because Choi Min-sik really ate a live octopus during filming. He actually ate four live octopuses, because they did four takes. The first time, someone put salt on the unfortunate cephalopod to help Choi choke it down a little bit easier, but it was too salty, as seen in the fascinating behind-the-scenes video from Oldboy's DVD extras. Choi is a Buddhist and a vegetarian, and he apologized to and said a little prayer for each octopus before he chomped it, according to director Park."

I played small college football. We had a great guy on the team -- big, strong kid -- really intense & quiet -- named Tim Baker. He would sit alone in the dining hall, away from the rest of the team, and he would have his arms all around his food like guarding his meal -- with his head on a swivel.

I asked my teammates: "What's up with Timmy Baker?" Someone told me that he'd grown up in a poor, huge family with something like 13 kids -- and he learned to guard his food for his very survival.

I grew up poor (single alcoholic mom, three boys, never made more than $10,000/year, often only cereal for dinner, and refused to accept any public assistance) -- but that made me feel blessed.

"I was activated from my reserve outfit at age 54 to help out with Dessert Storm 1991. Ended up teaching helicopter maintenance at Ft. Eustis, VA.

Sgt. Kentish: "I really don't want to go unless I can take my M1!"

Sgt. Major: "What's an M1?"

Sgt. Kentish: "Now I really don't want to go!"

My Ford 8700 tractor (1977 model -- was 10 years old when Daddy bought that thing brand new) just turned over 7500 hours this afternoon when I was using it.

Now, "hours" is basically proportional to engine revolutions, not time directly. I think it's calibrated to 1600 RPM.

A very rough equivalent to vehicles aged in miles is to figure about 50 miles per hour. Thus this is around 325,000 miles. Those would be hard miles as well.

If you really want to see the most elegant formulation of Maxwell and Classical EM Theory, look at the 4-vector relativistic formulation. It's beautiful.

Rather than two fields, E and B(H), you have one field *tensor*, not two sort of cross-product-y sideways to each other field vectors. That's called the field-strength tensor, or sometimes the Faraday tensor.

The source terms, rather than charge and current become one term, the 4-current. The force law gets slick as well, and Maxwell's equations are one 4-tensor equation.

Heaviside invented some "new math" as part of his eee-electric field theory studies. It's called operator/operational calculus. It simplifies solving differential equations.

Heaviside was not rigorous in developing it, just sort of intuited it. Mathematicians objected to it, 'cause he didn't properly prove, but later rigorously proved Heaviside knew what he was doing.

Heaviside said Screw you guys, I don't need to understand digestion to enjoy a good meal. Something like that.

In this "4 vector" formulation, you see the fields not as two field, the electric and magnetic, that do this odd dance with each other, but as one entity, the field tensor.

Consider moving reference frames. Say you've got a simple Coulomb field, an inverse-square point charge E-field.

Now, switch to a moving reference frame. The observer there sees that charge as moving. To him, there is now a magnetic, as well as electric field.

But, we intuit those fields are the same damn thing. And indeed, constructing the field tensor easily shows that. The components are nothing but coordinate dependent stuff. It's one field, just looked at from different perspectives.

Maxwell was no slouch. You may be thinking of Faraday, who was indeed a "I was told there would be no math" kind of guy.

344 The operation of the theoretical "door" would more than consume any positive energy on the "heat" side of the equation.

That has been pretty much rigorously proved now.

Speaking of Maxwell's Demon, there is an interesting gadget which does that sort of demon's work, separating fast molecules from slow ones. It's called a vortex tube, and it's basically like a pipe tee, with the side branch entering tangentially. Blow compressed air into the side branch, and cold air issues from one end of the main leg, and hot air from the other. I gather it's not really efficient enough to have much practical use.

Interestingly there are many very complex biological macromolecules that act as Maxwell Demons in a fashion, and they're called "molecular demons" . They do not violate the 2nd Law, and entropy increases.

What they're doing is recognizing and sorting various molecules as part of complex cellular bio-machinery.

Incidentally, it was Lord Kelvin who first dubbed the concept "Maxwell's Demon".

>These are used to cool the electronics in control cabinets without the hassle/cost of installing an AC unit. Compressed air isn't free or even cheap, but if the air is already there and available, sometimes this is a practical cooling solution.

I was just reviewing some of this. There have been many ideas of maxwell demons. One is a generalized "ratchet" concept. You have a generalized "one-way" device. Thermal energy can only move it one way.

There are electrical versions of this with diodes. One that Feynman like to use to illustrate this is called a Brownian ratchet.

In all cases, it can be show that for them to work, there must be a temperature difference. If all parts of the device are at the same temperature, it will not work. The ratchet device produces it's own thermal motions that cancel it all out, when everything is at the same temperature.

The 2nd Law holds. There is no "perpetuum mobile of the second kind".

354 336 I clearly misunderstood!

".....though he gives the sociologists too much credit."

I thought "he" meant "me, gp." I thought you were criticizing me for attributing my racist beliefs to social scientists because they 'separate the world into good and bad people.'

I now see you meant "he" as "xkcd" the author of the comic.

I get knocked here, subtly and not so subtly, for saying forbidden things about race, and I mistakenly thought that was your point.

I am so very sorry! I know it doesn't seem like it sometimes, but I'm really not trying to make enemies here.

No offense taken, friend. *raises glass* It's easy to miscommunicate with only text.

And yes, that "he" was the author. If you can BS an engineering grad student for 48 seconds, and BS a literary-criticism grad student forever, you should be able to string along a sociology grad for more than 4 minutes.....

357 "I'm an enjuneer myself"

I'm only a wannabe engineer. I have MSCS. Had the job title 'senior software engineer' for 16 years, but I was never more than a computer programmer IMHO. I never earned the right to call myself an "engineer." If I were ever to pass the finals for PDEs and vector calculus, like engineers do, I'd feel closer. But I never built anything that was formally "engineered," with the 99.999999% confidence in function and reliability that denotes. Not worthy.
