Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | France Sees Riots and Arson as Macron Raises Retirement Age from 62 to 64Police fired tear gas and fought with violent black-clad anarchists in Paris on Thursday as hundreds of thousands of mainly peaceful protesters marched across France against President Emmanuel Macron's plan to raise the pension age.Oh, they have them in France, too. Or: Reuters is just consistent in reporting that violent protesters are "mainly peaceful"... unless they're conservatives protesting for Trump, or almost anything else. That's not a "fear," that's a threat. This is more clear in this threat: That is, when we get violent, it's your fault, not ours. I don't take any position on the policy action of increasing the retirement age. I do take a position on the propaganda media's never-ending covering for the left's violence. Yes, a lot of normie conservatives, or just normie apolitical types, are angry about the increase in the retirement age, too; but it's the unions, always part of the leftist/communist coalition, threatening violence and actually committing violence. In league with antifa, of course. And Reuters is right there to cover for it. I'm unable to confirm that this video shows what it claims to show:

Macron forces plan to raise retirement age through French parliament without vote
President Emmanuel Macron's government has used special constitutional powers to force an unpopular pensions bill through France's parliament without a vote, triggering boos and shouts of "Resign!" in chaotic scenes. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne was greeted by boos and jeers as she arrived in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, to announce that she would invoke article 49.3 of the constitution to skip a vote on the reform measures. I'm not going to defend the French retirement system, but I will say that going around the voters was wrong, just like our congress was in refusing to hear a legitimate challenge to the 2020 election.
The voters of France were not heard. Macron used a parliamentary procedure to go around the voters, and a no confidence vote on Macron versus some other socialist party taking power is not a referendum on the retirement decision. Posted by: Thomas Paine at March 23, 2023 05:10 PM (lTGtQ) 70

I dislike Macron (he said there is no such thing as French culture), but this is one of the better things he has done.
The retirement age in France is the same as 50 years ago or more and people live longer now. This is not dictatorship, in many parliamentary democracies the government can assume responsibility for a law and then it's up to the opposition to give a vote of no confidence, make the government fall, and prevent the law from passing. Indeed, this is not a completely democratic procedure, because it short-circuits debate, but if the opposition is really obstructionist, putting forth 1000 amendments, it can be useful. What the opposition gets out of it is that the government fully assumes responsibility for an unpopular law and they can keep hammering the topic until the next elections. It all depends on the merits of the law and I think this one is a good law. Posted by: PG at March 23, 2023 05:12 PM (84jHt) 95

The government in the Proud Boys J6 trial seems to be misleading the defense and the court about the existence of informants or Confidential Human Sources (CHS). A new emergency motion from the defense counsel in the Zachary Rehl case states the government waited until March 22 to tell the court that one of the defense witnesses has been a CHS “since April 2021 through at least January 2023,” or since the beginning of the case through the start of the trial. March 22 happens to be the day before the CHS was scheduled to testify for the defense.

Why are government retirement pension plans always constructed like Ponzi Schemes? Did the people who designed them always think that the population would keep growing forever and life expectancy would never increase?

Ace, IIRC, the dependence on the unions in France comes from the need to get "the street" to manage itself. It is rooted in the Paris Commune days and is also the founding myth of the Anarcho-syndicalists.
As with anything, it is a we-wash-each-others'-backs situation that only manages to screw over the very people it was supposed to help. But "the street" always riots, it is pretty much the only voice it has. I have a newspaper my dad saved from the 50's and one of the below the fold articles is about Paris rioting against DeGaulle about Algeria. Posted by: Kindltot at March 23, 2023 05:17 PM (xhaym) 123

The French typically have a 35 hour work week. This was instituted to create more jobs. Well, it didn't do that. It actually made companies less productive, because their most driven, ambitious and hard working employees were driven away from working more hours (which some do anyways).
France typically shuts down for holidays from Bastille Day (July 14th) to the first of September. And they get a whole lot more paid holidays throughout the year. Transit workers (bus drivers, people that work for the railroad, the Metro in Paris, etc), typically retire in their 50's, and their pensions are paid for by the very high taxes on gasoline and diesel (for cars). Gasoline in France is typically AT LEAST 1.5 to 4 times what it is in the US. The high gas prices are supposed to drive people to use "public transportation". Macron unilaterally and unlawfully changed the retirement age and the public responded. Whether the change was good or bad, at least the French are not cowards and react. Funny thing about easy jobs with very little work required, lots of benefits, and massive red tape to fire you, they're hard to get. Companies in France are VERY picky about who they allow to take such a job. In France, unemployment is very low for people who are 50 or older. It hovers around 6%. If you're 25-49, unemployment is typically around three points higher. But hoo-boy, if you're 15-24, unemployment's all over the place, from 16% all they way up to 28%, depending on the year. https://bit.ly/3lAFWYO Posted by: bonhomme at March 23, 2023 05:29 PM (V1QHJ) 185

Macron unilaterally and unlawfully changed the retirement age and the public responded. Whether the change was good or bad, at least the French are not cowards and react. Biden could sign summary execution orders and the only protests would be state-sponsored and in favor of the government.

One thing to consider in all of this, even less efficient cultures like France generate a lot of value. Its just the government steals so much of it.
Reduce the French government of 2023 to spending/regulating what it did in 1923 and the average Frenchman could retire at 45 if not younger. Posted by: 18-1 at March 23, 2023 05:57 PM (lc5cP) 289
Since I'm a bit of a numbers guy, the French were trying to make their pension system work with 1.7 workers per retiree. At 62. Our system is creaking along at 2.2 workers per retiree at somewhere between 62 and 66. Hopefully, under the incoming socialist system where tens of millions of workers opt out of employment and its a ratio of 1.0 worker per retiree our senior citizens are much better off. /s Posted by: Kameela Harris at March 23, 2023 05:57 PM (enJYY) 290

The last time I was in France was 2020, and I went to Nice. It was still pleasant, but I would avoid Paris. There are areas of France that are not the shizzle show of Paris at all.
That said, and I say this as someone whose mama immigrated from France, Italy is so much prettier. Posted by: Piper I used to go to Paris all the time (well, at least twice a year) from 2000 to 2009, when the company I worked for was owned by the French. I like Paris a lot, and generally like the French. Despite what people think they are arrogant, most are pretty friendly people when you get to know them. Sometimes their perceived arrogance is just being aloof, because they all value their privacy, and are not "Boy Howdy! How ya' doin'?" However, the country is generally going downhill (well, so is America, too). I could see that in 2009. I would not, I think, really want to go back to visit. I can remember some really special days walking around Paris, in the Spring and Summer. It was incredibly pleasant. But those days are gone. This is a severe problem with education: staff bloat. Every college gets this, where there's an underdean of Diversity and Inclusion who fights with the underdean of Inclusion and Diversity for money, and who gets a bigger staff and the nice office. Every school I attended had 1 principal and maybe 1 vice principal. The latest one to open in town has like 4 principals. You know why your kid is in debt 200 grand for college and wants it canceled? Because of this crap, and because the college isn't on the hook for the money. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 23, 2023 06:01 PM (0hOvj) 300

There's that, but there's also the fact that people over 50 in France are coasting in their jobs, doing very little. Young people in France are at 18-28% unemployment, depending on the year, waiting for the older population to retire. If the retirement age increases, that's two more years of an older Frenchie occupying a job a younger person would like to step into. Posted by: bonhomme at March 23, 2023 06:03 PM (V1QHJ) 307
295 I remember a very different Paris from when I was younger and staying with my Great Grandmother. It’s sad, and we all know what has brought it here. Even the French know. They are not pro-immigration. Well, I shouldn’t paint with such a broad brush, the majority are not.
Same with Brussels. The graffiti that exists now on some of the ancient architecture is awful. It is dirty and there are tanks on all the street corners. Posted by: Piper at March 23, 2023 06:03 PM (ZdaMQ) 308
You know why your kid is in debt 200 grand for college and wants it canceled? Because of this crap, and because the college isn't on the hook for the money. Yep. If the GOPe was an opposition party they would have a bill to seize colleges endowments and pay student debt with it. And a cap on college costs. Would "severe conservatives" approve? No. Would it work? Yes. Posted by: 18-1 at March 23, 2023 06:04 PM (lc5cP) 309

When the Nazis came marching in, it stopped because the communists were mostly locked up or sent off to Germany to work in the factories as slave labors, or just plain shot...So nothing new here. Posted by: Colin at March 23, 2023 06:04 PM (8p0Zk) 312
Macron unilaterally and unlawfully changed the retirement age and the public responded. Whether the change was good or bad, at least the French are not cowards and react. Biden could sign summary execution orders and the only protests would be state-sponsored and in favor of the government.
Posted by: Trump poisoned my cat I think this is generally true. We're too comfortable with our lives to think about disrupting things too much. So, so complacent. A few years ago, there were YUGE Pro-Life demonstrations in France. But because most media, etc is "pro choice " (ie, pro abortion), it did not get reported here. The Threat you are talking about is actually codified within Islam. "Why are you attacking me!!!!" you see it all the time whenever there is honest reporting from Israel. Let’s hear it for the French. The government broke its contract with the people, Americans were forced into Social Security and have been subjected to abuses without consequence.
When is the government to be held responsible? No one in his right mind trusts the government. No one authorized the government to force you into these plans without alternatives or options. So burn it down. Posted by: Tom at March 23, 2023 09:02 PM (EcD5Y) 325
