Bragg is on the verge of indicting an innocent former President and top Presidential candidate against the opposing ruling party. Bragg is breaking the law and trying to incite civil unrest with his Soros funded political war. Hold him accountable.” Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) Quote III I need spirituality. I need God, or I cannot cope in this world. Russel Brand There is only one wrong thing about this settlement. The taxpayers are flipping the bill and not the officials who violated Joseph Kennedy, a high school assistant football, civil rights. Coach Fired For Praying At Football Game Reinstated To Old Role, Gets Nearly $2 Million Settlement Joseph Kennedy, a high school assistant football coach fired eight years ago for praying on the field with students, returned to his old position and will receive a $1.78 million settlement. Board members of the Bremerton School District in Washington voted last week to approve the settlement, which will cover attorney fees incurred by Kennedy in the landmark legal battle that reached the Supreme Court last year. Justices ruled that the public high school violated the First Amendment by placing Kennedy on administrative leave in response to his prayer. A law suit about poop jokes? No shit! The Supreme Court ponders a surprisingly difficult case about poop jokes I bet you could get some intelligent HS students to be more productive at the Fed than what we have now. Overheard in the men's room, "Let's make up more shit as we face these economic issues." TOPLINE The Federal Reserve raised interest rates again Wednesday to a 16-year high, making borrowing costs between banks even more expensive and shaking off calls to take a timeout on hikes to focus on cooling the banking crisis.Hey Fed, I have an idea. Why don't you turn off your GD money printing presses! While we are on economics.......... The bigger bailout A great deal of attention has focused on the bailout of SVB depositors, but the bigger story is the bailout of other banks. (At least bigger as of today, there are rumors the government may extend the over $250,000 deposit bailout to all banks. You can imagine what I think of that idea.) David Beckworth has a podcast where Steven Kelly discusses how the new Fed loan facility works. Here’s David: Beckworth: Daniela Gabor, she wrote something in a similar vein. She said, “Forget about SBV liabilities for a second. The real bailout story is the regime change in the Fed’s treatment of collateral. Par value goes against every risk management commandment of the past 30 years. It turbocharges the monetary power of collateral.” Kelly explains the problem by considering a situation where banks paid $90 for bonds with a par value of $100, and then the market value fell from $90 to $80: Kelly: So not only did they say, “Well, we’ll give you the 80 and we’ll calm things down. We’ll replace the 80 that you lost from uninsured depositors being flighty. Nor will we give you 90, which is what you’ve been carrying your books at, so you don’t have to recognize the loss of funding there. We’re going to give you 100, which can solve other problems on your books too.” So that’s super unique. And Daniela’s language is more dramatic than mine and more eloquent than mine, but that’s exactly the point she’s making. The Fed’s treating these bonds as $100 worth of collateral, despite the fact that the banks paid $90 and the market value is only $80. Ford Motor Company to be honest? Ford will begin reporting its financial results by business unit, instead of by region, and will release revised results that will show how the new business units would have performed in 2021 and 2022. I know we have currently employed and formerly employed LEOs here on The ONT. Maybe I'm wrong. But, if LEO are going to raid a home with a legally obtained warrant they must expect that they will be filmed. Cops are pissed off at Astroman. Hey they were on his property. Perhaps they should have worn balaclavas. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is suing Afroman for using video footage of their January raid on his home in his music video. Several deputies have sued the artist claiming he was profiting from the sale of merchandise that included their images, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter. The lawsuit, obtained by The Daily Caller, indicates Afroman was not at his residence at the time of the raid, but his wife was inside the home and managed to record the police in action. Residential surveillance footage also recorded the raid as it unfolded. Members of Adams County Sheriff’s Office insist they didn’t provide consent for their images to be used or profited from. Florida wants to cut through the red tape. For a country supposedly built on the notion of pursuing the American Dream and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, the United States makes it exceptionally hard to get a job. Over 30% of all workers in the US now need an occupational license—meaning they have to pay the government just for the privilege of going to work. Those fees can be hundreds to thousands of dollars each year, and that doesn’t even include what people must pay to jump through the training and education hoops that various licenses require. I understand his frustration. MisHum, I had an aunt that owned an old planation house in central Virginia, that I visited when I was much younger. There was a riverine stream behind the house, just like that ONT lead picture. Posted by: Iris at March 22, 2023 10:11 PM (foa6+) I have told this story before, but in any event: My Grandfather was the nicest man I have ever known. Now he spent 22(?) years in the army. Fought in WWII and Korea, so there must have been another side of him. But not once when I knew him, did I EVER see him get angry. Grandma was the sharp temper. Grandpa was a still lake of calm. I asked Mom once if she had ever seen him really angry. She said only once that she could remember. A pair of Jehovah's witnesses had come to the door and Grandma had answered it. Now Grandma was an extremely intelligent woman and had a tongue like a razor. I am betting she played with them a bit before sending them on their way with a 'We're Catholic, so...' but evidently one of them shouted that she was going to Hell. Grandpa evidently was up like a shot, ran out to them and told them they had better leave quickly or they would be leaving feet first. Everyone has their rock. Ok, I don't get the 22 + C + M + B + 22 reference. Plz explain.
Posted by: PabloD Sure - Epiphany marks the occasion of Catholics' tradition of “chalking the doors.” The formula for the ritual, adapted for 2022, take chalk and write the following above the door of the house: 22 + C + M + B + 22. The letters have two meanings. They represent the initials of the Magi - Caspar, Malchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat: “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross, and the “22” at the beginning and the “22” at the end mark the year. Taken together, this inscription is performed as a request for Christ to bless the house. Posted by: Tonypete at March 22, 2023 10:19 PM (qoGsy) 65

I see an enigma in Russel Brand. I'm never sure just exactly what it is he's selling. Having said that, I kind of enjoy listening to what he has to say. There's no doubt that his professed spirituality is "new age" but I guess that's better than nihilism. The guy is obviously intelligent and expresses some truths about the human condition. Of course, it all could be an act. I take nothing that the media and the pop culture complex has to offer at face value. Nothing. Russel, if you are who you say you are, good on ya and persevere.

>> The Fed’s treating these bonds as $100 worth
Yes. This is to avoid taking a loss on paper. They're valuing the bonds (Ts and others) at par value. To do that, you're pretending that the banks will hold them to maturity at which time Uncle Sam will pay them off (provided Uncle Sam hasn't defaulted). Only problem is, those bonds are on the asset side covering deposits. Big withdrawals require selling those bonds on the market, where they are worth far less than pan, since the Fed has hiked rates. This is all to avoid a solvency crisis (which incidentally, can fuck the Fed's own balance sheet!) Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley at March 22, 2023 10:45 PM (f1Vqw) 141

So, the Fed is saying it will print all the money needed to cover the deposits. Also, as was mentioned in the content, the banks are begging for the Treasury and FDIC to guarantee all deposits over $250K. Every thing. On paper, there are about $18T in total "deposits" in the banking system Uncle Sam (and the Fed) are thus thinking about being on the hook for another $18T. The Fed will have to print that in the end if it came to it. That of course, would be the end of the US dollar. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley at March 22, 2023 10:49 PM (f1Vqw) 153

RE the mountain lion attack in Colorado.....the game and fish dept takes this attack seriously.
In Arizona there was a lion attack on a group of kayakers on theSalt river east of lake Roosevelt. They were able to fight him off with their paddles. The White mountain Apaches and AZ game and fish sent 2 teams of lion hunters with dogs to run him down and kill him. That is taking it serious. Still watching the collection of Tolkien interviews I linked last night:
https://is.gd/UkUjI9 One thing I mentioned then is that he has a very particular manner of speech. Exact, but also tumbling over itself in a rush. One thing I did not think about is, it is extraordinarily difficult to get people to speak well when they are questioned. Then I realized, Tolkien was classically educated, probably more so than anyone who is reading this. Rhetoric would have been part of his education. Now he is not a great speaker as his pacing is.. awkward(?) but his ability to answer complex questions with such speed... He had a mind on him. The head of the LDS church had a revelation that cold caffeine wasn't all that bad about the time of the Pepsi stock purchase. I'm sure the timing is just a coincidence. Posted by: Blanco Basura - Z28.310 at March 22, 2023 11:09 PM (Bd6X8) 193

Central Bank Digital Currencies will only push back against collapse, not prevent it. The general rule is that the fiat currency to replace the failed fiat currency only collapses in turn because the monetary mis management still exists and is not fixed. The French Republic went to Assignat to Mandat to Gold when Napoleon took the Consolship, and Argentina went from Peso to Austral to Peso pegged to the dollar and Brazil regularly does that too This will continue until fixed, and it will only be fixed when we are out of options Posted by: Kindltot at March 22, 2023 11:25 PM (xhaym) 225

So I'm actually a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or what you guys call a Mormon.
The prohibition is against "hot drinks", which has been interpreted for well over 100 years to mean coffee and tea. It doesn't mean hot chocolate or the like. Tea means actual caffeinated tea; herbal tea such as peppermint or chamomile is fine. Alcohol and tobacco is specifically forbidden, as is abusing drugs. So thinks like Coke and Pepsi have never been forbidden; per se, but never encouraged either. And hat hasn't changed -- soda is not a good thing, all things considered. But no, we aren't going to be disciplined for having a coke. If you get addicted to it, though, you might have issues. Which, I think, is (sorry MisHum!) one reason why coffee is on the no-no list. Too addicting. Ideally no one would need chemical stimulants to function. Posted by: IRS Commissioner Charles P. Rettig at March 22, 2023 11:27 PM (AxRGS) 230

Oh, and coffee means all coffee, including decaf, iced, etc.
But we aren't going to go around screaming everyone who drinks coffee is going to hell. For one thing, this is a clear dietary rule, which can and have changed over the years -- pork is fine now, but wasn't in Ye Olde Times. And yes, we are banned from Alcohol, but Christ will come at some point and drink the fruit of the vine with His people, so clearly that restriction will be eased too someday. Part of it is making members of the church a "peculiar people" and part of it is making sure that people can sacrifice a small thing, so they can grow into sacrificing the bigger things that God demands. Many chain grocery stores used to have the Cafe du Monde (orange can, chicory/original one). Seems not so much any more. But that's possibly because the coffee section has exploded in size, variety, and revenue/square inch. Though not clear why CdM coffee would get the axe because of that.
I know get it at the Vietnamese grocery stores, which still stock it despite the fact that they now have 1-3 varieties of imported V'mese coffee, which wasn't the case a while back. Not just Trung Nguyen, the first export brand. Trung Nguyen was also the first national chain of coffee places in Vietnam. They varied a bit in layout and quality, but generally were very good. Last time I was at Cafe du Monde they seated me (alone) right next to James Spader, who was sitting there filming a scene for "Storyville". We were so close we chatted between the many takes, while they re-set the extras (people walking by the on the sidewalk, crossing the street, and a carriage rolling by with Jackson Square in the background). Don't know why some of the takes were bad, but a few had an obvious problem: Spader takes a bite from a beignet as the actress walks up to his table to drop a script/something like that on it, make a comment, and walk away. Spader kept sneezing from the powdered sugar.
Finally a waiter (all Vietnamese by this time, mid-90s) said "wait I've got a solution" and he brought back a spray bottle with table water. He sprayed the beignets, appearance didn't change, but no fine dust. Sneezing stopped. But they were *still* filming that brief scene when I left for the airport after 45 minutes. Never saw the movie, don't know if the scene even made the cut. Posted by: rhomboid at March 22, 2023 11:48 PM (OTzUX) 268
Just noticed that you're talking LDS stuff, which is a field I know something about.
The revelation known as the Word of Wisdom was received in 1833, and prohibits "hot drinks." Joseph Smith and subsequent leaders have consistently interpreted the phrase to mean coffee and tea, and the emphasis has always been on the type of drink, not its temperature. For example, ice tea is out, but hot chocolate is just fine (and delicious). It has always been taught that way, though there has been variation in the degree to which it has been "enforced" over the years. Maybe 60 years ago, some leaders recommended against other drinks containing caffeine, in kind of a "spirit of the law" mindset. I was raised that way, and I still avoid colas and other drinks like that. But my cousins of the same age were not. To my knowledge that has never been officially taught or enforced the way the prohibition on coffee and tea has been. And the comment above about Coke and stocks and timing is sheer nonsense -- but you probably already knew that. Posted by: Half Dozen at March 22, 2023 11:48 PM (eHovo) 269

St. Browning (John Moses, that is) did his missionary work in GA - *after* he had started selling designs to Winchester. There are no records to confirm anything, but it appears he either worked on one design while on mission or got back to Ogden for a visit, or both, based on the timing of one design he sold to them. The "Edison of guns" often came up with his brilliant designs while just noodling over them in his head. Though mostly this happened while half-brother Ed was handy - Ed would turn the idea or vision into a prototype quickly, and the tinkering would go from there.

The rye is very good and in my preferred proof level (100) but overpriced. Both use a secondary finishing process - bourbon finished in former port wine casks, Rye in former rum casks. That secondary finish can make or break a spirit. The rye is definitely improved in this case. Overall opinion for me -- I'd likely never buy a bottle myself, but I wouldn't turn down the rye if offered to me. I'd pay maybe $12 for a pour at a bar or restaurant. Saw Thorogood - no, he wasn't opening for someone else - at the Cold Springs Tavern in the mountains above Santa Barbara. Was a Sunday in 1992, open mike set-up at one end of the tavern.
He rode in on a motorcyle (wearing some kind of animal-skin fancy biking get-up). Didn't see what he was drinking. We were facing the fire, other end of the room (cool December day) and one in the group said "hey, that sounds a lot like Thorogood" when he started singing "One Scotch, One Whiskey ....". It *was* him. Posted by: rhomboid at March 23, 2023 12:12 AM (OTzUX) 301

Thanks Doof. I'm mostly an aged rum guy, so bourbon and rye are for "breaks" and changing up things now and then. Port finishes are very well known in the aged rum world, some of the best stuff out there is finished that way. I've had the Woodinville port-finished bourbon, which I liked, and Black Ridge (a Total Wine brand I guess), which was OK but not as good. The bourbon is the Angel's Envy I have, and it's OK for me.
On rye, if you come across Frey Ranch 100-proof (from Fallon, NV, also home of Top Gun since 1999), try it. Very nice. Not sure what their distribution is like, though. You find it in SoCal without too much trouble. Posted by: rhomboid at March 23, 2023 12:17 AM (OTzUX) 310

Rush is touring for Moving Pictures, which was massive. By then, Aerosmith had fell apart. Tyler was living in a hotel in NYC near his drug dealer. Perry had started his own band (Joe Perry Project) and were opening for...Rush. Rush killed them with kindness and made sure they were taken care of. The kindness was so bad, Joe Perry apologized to them for being such a dick to them years earlier.

The Night is here- a poem by a German pietist, Johann Freylinghausen who lived from 1670-1739. He wanted everyone to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ:
The night is here. Be near to me, dear Jesus. Be a bright candle shining in the dark, driving the sin from my heart. The day will come. Hasten the dawn, dear Jesus. Hasten the time when the sun of righteousness shines into the depths of my heart. The moon casts her gentle rays. Guide me dear Jesus. Guide my steps through this gloomy path, that I may arrive safely in heaven. The stars glisten in the sky. Teach me, dear Jesus. Teach me to discern truth amidst falsehood that even now I may see signs of your glory. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 23, 2023 12:29 AM (WLZG7) 322

Read an article about Rush a bit back. Early 70s, they opened for Aerosmith when they had gotten huge. Tyler and Perry treated them like shit. Fast forward a decade. The kindness was so bad, Joe Perry apologized to them for being such a dick to them years earlier.

https://flemingsbond.com/studillac/ Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at March 23, 2023 01:05 AM (g59Yt) Nice write-up. Raymond Loewy owned the design studio, that was contracted by Studebaker to design the 1953 models. But the design of the '53 coupes and hardtops was almost entirely the sole work of Robert Bourke, one of Loewy's employees. Bourke initially thought he was designing a dream car for the show circuit, and was flabbergasted when Studebaker gave the go ahead to build it for sale. Loewy does indeed deserve credit for selling the design to Studebaker's management. I attended a Studebaker meet at which Bob Bourke gave a presentation. Very interesting, indeed. Another story about Rush that amused me. Geddy Lee and family went on vacation in the mid-late 70s (not sure of year) to Algeria. While checking in he noticed a really tall guy who looked like Robert Plant. Tall guy was looking right at him. Lee finished checking in and went to the room. About a half hour later, a knock at the door revealed a really tall Englishman who looked like Robert Plant because he was Robert Plant. Pleasantries were exchanged and they talked a bit and that was that. Just 2 rock guys chatting in the hallway of a hotel in North Africa while on vacation with their families.

Yep. That's why ai never tried it. What would be the point? LOL.
I should try it, maybe, before pitching it. I probably bought it from Sweet Marias, along with a crapload of green coffee. Shipping has made this almost a wash. I asked a local coffee shop about selling green beans. "Sure!" they said. No discount though. So much for that idea. I'm down to the last several pounds before the Unpleasantness and monetary Inflation hit. I don't want to look at what coffee costs. A Mormon prohibition on coffee makes sense from one standpoint. It is an import, and comes from far away. If you've seen what a pound of cofee cost at the Wyoming fur trapper rendezvoux in 1836, you might want to avoid becoming addicted when possible. It is an expense that is, strictly speaking, not necessary. One might argue the point, but some people look at it that way. I always wondered about Welfare payments back in the day. Did they include Coffee? Was that "approved" for WIC or food stamps? Things get contentious when somebody else has to pay for it. Posted by: Common Tater at March 23, 2023 02:25 AM (z7fHM) 411

These cops have got not a single leg to stand on. If they are experiencing shame and derision for what they did, perhaps another line of work is in order. If you're proud of what you're doing, you should never be afraid of the public being able to see it. If you want to keep it a secret, then you obviously aren't proud of what you're doing, and should rethink your career path. Posted by: Goober at March 23, 2023 11:11 AM (Hgvgt) 464
