44 I recently saw something on youtube about hammerhead worms. It was a zoologist who basic said, if you come across hammerhead worms, you need to kill them. They are invasive and toxic. And you can't just chop them up, 'cause that's how you get more hammerhead worms. She suggests trapping them in a jar, adding salt or vinegar, and freezing them until they dissolve.

The most logical biological explanation I've seen posited was that it's something in the womb, possibly an abnormal immuno response from the mother reacting to the male fetus.

Supposedly a study had found a loose correlation between having older brothers and being gay, and it was speculated that the mothers body learns an immuno response from repeated exposure to the pesky little Y chromosome passenger.

But I just can't quite bring myself to go parachuting, even though I really like the idea. I know a guy whose ex-wife was a skydiving enthusiast; she died in a small plane crash. It obviously had a big effect on their daughter. I also was acquainted with a guy who got severely busted up when his main failed and he was only able to get a partial deployment on his reserve before hitting the ground. There's not a lot of room for error in the sport...

368 I'm convinced the biologists have wildly overstated the number of distinct species to allow them to publish and thrive in academia.

What would happen if you applied the standards for declaring a "new" species to the various shapes, sizes and colors of humans, all living in different habitats with different diets, etc.?
Posted by: Bilwis Devourer of Innocent Souls, I'm starvin' over here at March 22, 2023 09:41 PM (cupoy)

Well, "species" itself is a human construct. A system of taxonomy is useful to have, but sometimes it devolves to hair-splitting.

371 337 I think the whole Trump prosecution is nonsense. Having said that, I don't for one second believe that Michael Cohen shelled out $130K to a porn star without consulting his client and without expecting reimbursement.
Posted by: PabloD at March 22, 2023 09:22 PM (4xwZL)

Cohen is industrial grade putz and a wannabe

he was vying for a WH job

he paid the 130K with a HELOC cuz he claims he didn't want his wife to know

if Trump ordered him to do it, why would Cohen's wife care

Trump paid him back cuz he felt sorry for him

and Cohen went to jail for a bunch a shit he did before this

he is a dumbass lying scumbag and needs to go back to jail

Ok, so this guy is visiting a closed city in Russia. Used to be a town for smelting nickel, but they still smelt copper there. He is complaining continuously about how polluted the air is. Ok. That it hurts to breathe. Ok.

Then he does a set of 5 pull ups on an abandoned railway with no abnormal breathing beyond what you would expect. Right.

And I bet there are grizzlies in the Bighorns now.

I did a lot of prairie stewardship. In the end, a nature preserve is like trying to freeze time and change. What is now prairie was hemlock forests 5000 years ago. It'll get covered by a mile of ice sometime in the next 100K years. Preservation in the long run is kinda futile.

397 394 We try to "put a pin" in a supposedly ideal state of climate, in a supposedly ideal state of evolution and species range change, and call that the 'correct' thing to do, when we really don't know anything in the long run.

I loved visiting preserves, trying to identify everything I saw, taking lots of closeup photos of bugs and plants. My reasons for supporting and maintaining quality preserves is that they are rare and beautiful and fun to visit. But I have no illusions that preservation somehow saves Gaia.
