Former San Francisco Police Commissioner to Victims of Street Crime: Drop Dead, Snowflake P!ssbabies!

Via David Strom at Hot Air.

A tech entrepreneur wrote a series of tweets to San Francisco mayor and Tony Toni Tone fan London Breed -- when Tony Toni Tone comes to town, you have to ignore the mask mandates you yourself impose on the population and just feel the music move you, masklessly -- about his employees' car being smashed into. Not only was $10,000 in gear stolen, but their passports as well.

I believe "an offsite" just means an offsite job. I think he means a House Call for a sick computer network, if you will.

Snehal Antani
@snehalantani

A teammate visiting San Francisco for an offsite called me frantically last night. After dinner at Fisherman's Wharf they came back to a smashed car window and 2 stolen backpacks. $10K in gear lost, passports gone, etc. #SanFrancisco

"Laptop bags were in the trunk, nothing visible from the street", a typical description of a smash & grab, yet thieves were able to find the specific car and knew to pull the rear seat down and reach into the trunk... how?

I explained, "these aren't homeless ransoming smashing windows. These are professionals using blue tooth scanners to find laptop bags. And idle iPad, Bose headphones, etc all emit Bluetooth"

"And let me guess, it was the rear window facing the street, because thieves drive up to the car, open their door, then smash+grab. A witness must be directly behind the thieves RJ see anything, all other views are blocked"

My teammate said his companion was on the phone with the police, to which I said, "they don't care. Maybe they'll show up in a few hours, they'll likely make you go to the station, but this happens thousands of times per week"

So now I need to include a pre-visit security brief to people traveling San Francisco. This is a big reason I'm hesitant to open an office in the city versus keeping a remote team and occasionally meeting up at a location to whiteboard

And my teammates will be scarred forever, being robbed hits you at your core, especially when it's thousands of dollars of loss. There is no downtown recovery without an aggressive push for safety @LondonBreed

The next mayor will win by running on a simple platform: 1, safe neighborhoods; 2, Clean Streets; 3, great public schools

Responding to this was John Hamasaki, a former police commissioner. He quit that post to run for DA against Chesa Boudin. He got 46% of the vote, so he's not a fringe guy, at least to San Franciscans.

You'd think that San Fran's former police commissioner and would-be district attorney would be sympathetic to a crime victim, and join his call for San Francisco to #DoBetter.

You'd be wrong. Completely wrong.

In fact, he tells this guy that crime is central to the experience of living in the city of San Francisco, and the crime victims must be whiny Suburban Pissbabies to be upset their car was broken into and their passports stolen.

Note that these employees are obviously non-US citizens, note, to be carrying their passports with them. So now they're in a foreign country without their passports, and will have to go through a bureaucratic nightmare just to get copies issued, nevermind the coming identity theft.

But Jon Hamasaki's response to this employer is: Tell your f*ggot employees that if they can't handle a little Multicultural, Enriching Street Crime, then go back the suburbs, pussies.

No seriously, that's what this former SF police commissioner says.

And a conference mecca. I have had to fly there soooo many times for conferences, but I would never go back. Even way back then, the streets were filling up with homeless in front of hotel doors. There would be the doorman, and beside, the homeless.

At my Big Tech Company, "offsite" refers to an "offsite meeting." It's when the big shots or a special project group rally at some location - sometimes it's the HQ, sometimes it's a field office - and meet with each other to set strategy, establish time tables, do goal-setting for the year, etc. Most or all of the people are away from their usual site, using dedicated space and time to accomplish the goal of the meeting.

In a political context, it would usually be called a "summit."

They're dying. Their death can - and should - be avoided, but it won't be. Like with an addict, change has to come from within.

There is some possibility of external redemption if a city goes bankrupt and ruthless city manager is installed by the state government, but that is only a possibility in a "red state" and even then, it is just a distant possibility.

Should have been doing it anyway. I have mentioned this before, but I work for a Silicon Valley firm. When I visit the head office, I fly through SFO. In 2018, the company started forbidding rental cars for people visiting the HQ. Uber or taxi for all transportation. It costs more than a rental to do it this way, but the reason for the rule is this kind of crime.

Rental cars are easy to spot and often have good stuff in them. Since I work for a big company, it self-insures and so is on the hook for damage to rentals. The costs of broken windows and the costs of stolen equipment were so high - and the events leading to them so commonplace - that they just pulled the plug on car rentals entirely. Switching everything to expensive cabs and ubers was a significant net savings to the company.

That he can't believe that San Francisco continues to degrade into lawlessness, his own hometown, is indicative of a very smart person in one area (engineering) simply not having the knowledge in others (public policy).

California has successfully colonized the Interior West at this point, and they have limitless wells of potential colonists because the state's massive population.

We will see how things go outside of the Interior West. Some of the demography indicates that the newer waves (and from places like NY and NJ) are refugees rather than colonists, but I have no idea if that's true.

You'd think. But this is San Francisco.

The "Police Commission" is a civilian "oversight" board that conducts disciplinary hearings on charges of police misconduct. The kind of people who are appointed to the Commission are left-wing activists who are itching to "hold police accountable."

God, I hate the words "accountable" and "accountability" as they are used these days. The kind of people who like to use those vague terms have totally different things in mind when they consider "accountability" for police officers who made split-second decisions in stressful situations and "accountability" for criminals victimizing the innocent.

118 I was driving down the main drag in my town (it's a small city about 20 minutes outside of the nearby bigger city) and went past a construction site. Some new building is going up. Next to the earthworks were piles of materials. Mostly concrete piping and culvert material, and some I-beams. They were just sitting there. No fences, no guards, etc. Just stacked neatly to be ready for the work to come.

And I thought to myself, "this is nice. I live in a place where things left out in the open remain where they're left. They aren't stolen. They aren't covered in graffiti. The stuff doesn't need to have fences erected and guards posted to protect it because we're all fairly civilized here. This is much better than the shithole where I used to live where construction material theft was endemic."

But I guess I'm a pussy for liking my life in a peaceful place rather than dodging vagrants and needles while counting down to the next time my house or car is burgled.

The overhang of previously amassed wealth kept those dreams going long after we discontinued the rough and messy business of making stuff, and thereby generating real wealth. The rot was plain to see in the banking architecture built on U.S. Treasury paper (bills, notes, bonds) as rising interest rates undercut the price of all the debt paper issued previously at lower rates. And this was the collateral that banks generally held the depositors’ money in.

Crime is a local issue, and the localities that love it keep voting for it. It's not a federal issue.

The only solutions are at the state level. Getting red legislatures and governors to go in and do everything possible to lessen the political power of cities.

Accurate census counts, voter rolls, and student rolls at schools would gut more than one city's power within a state, I suspect.

193 Crime is a local issue, and the localities that love it keep voting for it. It's not a federal issue.

The only solutions are at the state level. Getting red legislatures and governors to go in and do everything possible to lessen the political power of cities.

Accurate census counts, voter rolls, and student rolls at schools would gut more than one city's power within a state, I suspect.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison

It's also a federal issue, remember HW Bush crushing Dukakis over his stance on the death penalty and crime?

Nixon won 49 states running to be tough on crime and appointing conservative justices. Republicans with the Contract with America passed laws like "3 strikes and your out" and suddenly the nation was surprised crime was at an all time low.

It bleeds into local races as well.

But no, they were convinced that Johnny didn't get the same sentence as J'Quant-e for drug possession, so they insisted on three strikes and mandatory sentencing.

And now we're racists because there's a record number of blacks in prison because of three strikes and mandatory sentencing.

234 But they won't because they are on the side of the criminals rather than civil society.

It works like this. You start with a mindset that says anything bad you learn about non whites is due to racism. Then you look at prison stats and see that more blacks are in prison by a percentage of the population (and often overall) than whites. Why must this be? RACISM, obviously, because that's your only answer to everything.

So how do you combat this evil racism? You stop arresting people for crimes typically committed by black people. This brings down the arrest and conviction numbers of blacks in prison.

For bonus points, you let a ton of them free during a viral panic, on the excuse of crowding and dangers of transmission of the disease.

351 My brother lost his wallet TWICE in the Bay Area about 20 years ago now. He actually got it back both times with everything in it, including cash. Someone brought it to the police and he got it back. That was unreal then, of course.

And having something stolen does shake you. House burglaries are the worst. Someone was IN YOUR HOUSE. It's upsetting. We had our car stolen and that was even that way. I kept going back outside to see if I'd just missed seeing it parked in the driveway.

What isn't upsetting is vandalism. Someone broke a window and grabbed my daughter's purse which was left in view. It was a PAIN in the butt, but not particularly upsetting. It's upsetting if someone trashes your lawn or spray paints something OR breaks your car window. But not in the same way.

I the case described it wasn't smashing a window and grabbing a purse as some sort of opportunity crime. It was clearly well planned and involved technology which is a whole different level of feeling insecure. Instead of broken window "oh shit". And call the cops. It's organized. And organized always is more threatening.
