The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Imagine donating a kidney...not after you checked a box on your driver's license form and you are dead ...but when you are alive! What an amazing gift to humanity. It reaffirms my faith in the goodness of people when I read stories about such things.

But as usual the aggressively stupid mandarins that increasingly inhabit every level of officialdom have decided that what works well needs to be changed...Chesterton's Fence anyone?

And as much as I would like to blame the current cultural insanity of "DEI" (DIE?), it seems as though this is probably just a chaotic and stupid change in the system for the sake of doing something...anything...to justify their phony balony jobs and pretend that their vast intellects will be sufficient to overcome actual experience and data and real-world results.

In other words...liberals!

Kidney Transplant Controller Wants To Distribute Human Organs Based On 'Equity'

If someone donates one of their kidneys and later needs a new one, should they go to the top of the transplant waitlist? Yes, say good people. Yes, say normal people. Not anymore, say the bureaucrats in charge of the transplant waitlist. Instead, they say it’s time for a “more equitable approach.”

Currently, the people at the top of the kidney transplant waitlist are people who have donated one of their organs to someone else (living donors), young children who are a great biological match with an organ, and patients who are very hard to be matched with any organ. The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) is a private non-profit that holds a contract with the federal government to run the transplant waitlist, and they want to change that. UNOS wants to remove these “hard boundaries” in favor of a new system that erodes the protections for living donors.

A report commissioned by UNOS envisions a drastic reduction in prioritization for living donors — going from the current virtual guarantee of getting a new kidney to a slight bonus on the waiting list — equivalent to as low as 10 percent of the total prioritization score. This policy would betray those who have already donated an organ and discourage others from donating in the future. They are pushing this policy even though their own research shows that changing from the current policy will not reduce death rates but lead to a higher rate of failed kidney transplants in the first year after surgery.

One of the many conceits of the "progressive" (spit) movement is their conviction that they are smarter and better and wiser than their predecessors. That's how they justify tossing out 2,500 years of Western culture for the newest idiotic idea. Global Cooling, No Nukes, Alar, Global Warming, Organic Food, mRNA vaccines, The Welfare State, The Designated Hitter, and on and on and on.

Radical transformation might sound exciting and effective, but in reality it rarely works. A sober, calculated, data-based approach to complex problems is usually the way to improve them, and the hubris of dorm-room intellectualism is anathema to these sorts of changes. The Law of Unintended Consequences is a bitch, and these people are arrogant enough to think that they can consider all of the possible consequences and manage them...with their brains!

They can't.

Sure, it sounds boring: basing changes on observation and data and experience. And it is. But just ask the thousands of sufferers of kidney disease how they feel about this stupid manipulation of a functioning system. My guess is that they would prefer boring.

There are lots of boring people in our culture's history. The most boring of the lot is a man named Norman Borlaug. He did plodding, tedious research into disease resistant wheat that also was high yielding. Yup...that will put you to sleep at a cocktail party!

But he was one of the titans of the 20th century. His work has saved billions of people from starvation. Pretty impressive, and far more important than flash-in-the-pan crackpots whose work is more self-aggrandizement than substantive.

The development of Western culture could not have happened without the gradual shift toward scientific analysis, rational thought, and data and experience-based decisions. When we base our decisions on other things; race, ethnicity, subjective concepts of "equity," we risk destroying what has taken 2,500 years to create.

8 any of these changes will result in an increased 1-year Graft Failure Percent. The same research also suggests that being a prior living donor may have as little as 10% weight. This is a betrayal of former living donors. Even if rescinding protections for living donors only applies to future living donors, you will discourage living kidney donation. Any legitimate kidney allocation policy will protect living donors, past and future. UNOS continues to claim this policy will be more equitable but is vague about the context. UNOS has provided no argument that this policy which is unfair to donors and will increase graft failure has any substantial benefit.

So it not only does what CBD mentioned, but it will increase the odds of transplant failure, causing two new harms. Excellent.

There are many, many men like that throughout history. Clarence Birdseye is another. His invention of flash-freezing reduced food waste and improved access to food for everyone.

Not to mention men like Joseph William Bazalgette, who designed and ran one of the largest public works projects in the world at the time to rebuild the London sewer system using newly-available steam power thanks to James Watt. In so going, he invented modern sewage management and thus ended the public health disaster of poor water sanitation throughout the developed and most of the developing world. The man is a titan to whom millions of people owe their lives.

But sewer engineering is boring and unpleasant.

Not that I'm interested in commodifying (interesting video I watched that claimed that the "pill" commodified the female body with an explanation of how this woman came to that conclusion has that word on my mind) human kindness, but it would only be fair.

Otherwise, putting people living with one kidney on the very top of the list if their one remaining kidney fails is simply the minimum human decency anyone should expect.

Saw a post on FB about a deaf and blind man traveling by plane alone and how a teenaged girl who knew some sign language volunteered to translate for him the entire trip and someone cos-playing as human wasn't warmed by how wonderful people are but asked if they at least gave the girl a free plane ticket since she'd been asked to WORK during her flight. wtf?

58 Paying people for kidneys would make a "waiting list" completely unnecessary. I think that people can donate half a liver, too.

No waiting for anyone to die in a car crash any more.

There are reasons NOT to do this, but I think that putting people who do voluntarily risk DYING from surgery complications in order to give away an organ on the TOP of any donor waiting list is just basic minimum humanity.

Posted by: Synova at March 23, 2023 11:13 AM (BD/yx)

59 FWIW, had a relative on the kidney waitlist in the mid-90's and it was messed up even then. The sicker you are, the higher you are on the list which makes sense for saving lives in the short term, but not so much in terms of getting an organ into someone who has a longer life expectancy.

Apparently, the waitlists are (or were) regional, so he ended up relocating from RI to FL, getting on a regional list there, and got a kidney within months. Sadly, his health had declined considerably while he'd waited, so he died within a year of the transplant.

"Golden rice," which contains beta-carotene, which the body can synthesize into Vitamin A. It has the potential to reduce blindness and other problems in impoverished areas that are rice-dependent. Vitamin A deficiency is a serious problem in a lot of places and you can die of it.

Big Environmentalist has done everything in its power to block "golden rice" at every turn, with Greenpeace carrying the banner. Greenpeace asserts that it's a hoax and a waste of resources. The real blockage, though, has been international treaty. Treaties (made in the early aughts, IIRC) block agricultural products with any possible negative effects on human or environmental health. Since *everything* has possible negative effects, it is used as a cudgel to keep out anything its masters - like Greenpeace and others - want to keep out.

71 MSN/FoxNews:

The office of then-Vice President Joe Biden tried to quash a Bloomberg News story about Hunter Biden at the younger Biden's firm's request, according to 2015 emails published Wednesday.

Emails obtained by America First Legal (AFL) through its ongoing lawsuit against the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), showed a close relationship between the vice president's office, Hunter Biden's longtime business partner and the media.

On Dec. 8, 2015, The New York Times ran an article saying the "credibility of the vice president’s anticorruption message may have been undermined" by Hunter’s serving on the board of Burisma Holdings with its owner, Mykola Zlochevsky.

A Federal Reserve white paper has come up with a new function for money

As also noted in our paper, "The main economic attributes of a technically effective currency rests on three functions: as a unit of account, a store of value and as a medium of exchange."

But there is a fourth function of money: as a means of social control. The centralized monopoly over the functions of money held by sovereign governments and central banks has generated great income and wealth imbalances. Concerns about a lack of central bank performance with respect to financial inclusion, income inequality, economic system stability and the tendency of central banks to intermediate on behalf of large financial institutions supported the creation of cryptocurrency"

182 The Fed Proposes A 4th Function Of Money: Means Of Social Control

If you give the government power over anything, they will use it for social control. This is the problem with government; we have given it far too much power, well beyond what it was meant for. This also ties in with what we were discussing earlier - that local social networks like libraries, elks clubs, and the like have been eliminated, because we gave the federal government power over social issues. The feds don't actually do anything positive, and the locals who know what needs to be done are out of the picture. This is the way that nations die.

The one area that the federal government has no business in is social control. Prosecute crime, you can't prevent it.

190 Kidney Transplant Controller Wants To Distribute Human Organs Based On ‘Equity’

191 > Count yourself lucky that organ donation is voluntary in this country so far, and for most organs is done after death. Have a look at China, where this is not the case, in either situation.

In Larry Niven's future history, transplant organs mostly came from condemned criminals. After a while, speeding, littering, and jaywalking became capital offenses

There were also gangs of "organleggers" who would kidnap people and break them up for parts, just like a car thief with a chop shop.

The hospital that did it made me go through psych evals to make sure I'd take care of it and was mentally and financially stable enough to handle medicines (and rigorous enough to take the meds every day). I was on a wait list for over 5 years (started just before I started dialysis--when I got on the list, they told me 7 years for an organ; five years later, it was 7 years for an organ. So I changed my registration to AZ where the wait time was less).

The testing and evaluations I went through were important. If it's based on so-called "equity", expect poor matches for folks that won't take care of them getting organs and those organs being lost because those receiving them won't take care of them.

I've had mine for almost 6 years now, and is still working quite well.

The loss of dollar demand for international settlements - which hasn't happened yet, but there are some serious cracks developing in that structure - will cause a short or intermediate-term catastrophe in this country. That inflation we've been outsourcing for decades will all come home.

If this happens - and I think the risks of this happening are meaningful - then it will make the junta's decision to kick Russia out of SWIFT, interfere with other settlements and arbitrarily seize the wealth of Russian nationals the greatest foreign policy error in American history.

215 An observation from a link JJS provided this morning is interesting. Conservatism has flaws, no doubt, but the same is more true of Progressives. Totalitarians at heart, they always want to "fix" things, especially things that can be twisted all out of shape by ideology and thereby broken so the remainder does not work at all.

One of the major flaws of conservatism is its defeatism. If leftism is apocalyptic, conservatism is chiliastic, always eager for that eschatological moment of doom and judgment. It doesn't matter what it is -- China, Soros, fentanyl, the cartels, CRT, transgenderism -- every time a cat falls from a tree, a mob suddenly pops out of hyperspace ready equipped with sackcloth and ashes. The Last Day is always dawning, the seals ever breaking open.

Live donation ends up with better long-term results, as the organ is not outside a body for as long. No family members that could give were matches for me. But folks are creative; someone started a chain, where folks were willing to donate and had matches with others, so eventually everyone in a chain had a match, just not from their original list of potential donors.

You can't understate the extent to which racial discrimination has been routinized by Oregon governments.

The Portland-area transit company is eliminating bus service to certain areas, because those areas are too white and affluent.

For the very popular swim lessons offered by the City of Portland, minority kids are allowed to register the day before the white kids.

Portland has a slush fund to fight global warming - the law creating the slush fund makes it clear that grants from this fund should be directed to minorities.

And so on.

I reject the idea of prior restraints. The states have more leeway on laws than the feds, but both seem to be in the business of preventing things from happening instead of prosecuting those that violate the laws and customs. Prior restraints, as applied to all activities not just speech, are extraordinarily expensive compared to prosecution. When you make something idiot proof, a better idiot will come along.

We don't need government to tell us what we are allowed to do, and we certainly don't need a government to restrict our choices in goods or services.

That being said I'm not donating a single organ when I die. As a matter of fact, just to guarantee that, I plan on having my body injected with AIDS just a few minutes before I die. Poison the well. Not quite. There is one conceit: that they've latched onto The One correct answer at some point - primarily through the "being better" aspect of this, in the moral sense. They're so good, and everyone else is so evil, that this results in a sort of sweeping epistemological sense in "good" as being wholly defined in relation to whatever it is the progs happen to want at the moment.

Nothing they do or want can be evil, by definition. The naked pursuit of power by all means is simply the obvious progression to a just world.

They started blathering on at work about "equity" about 2 years ago. We know the writing is on the wall, which is a pity because it's a multi-decade outfit that had been raking in hundreds of millions a year. Major 20th Century Motor Company vibes. Abortion - this is a human rights issue. The baby is a separate human that has a right to life.
Pornography - if the participants are adult and voluntary, and access to view is limited to adults, I don't see how the state or feds can handle it. If not, this becomes a human rights issue as well.
Prostitution - this is likely also a human rights issue, due to so much trafficking.
Drugs - Given how prohibition went, government can't tackle this one properly either.

Liver enzymes (AST, ALT and so forth) measure liver function, so I'm sure they've done those on your husband. Creatinine levels are the main way kidney function is checked. In my case, there was no family history of kidney issues, so when my blood pressure started to rise and my creatinine numbers increased, they did an ultrasound. I knew something was wrong when the ultrasound tech kept taking images and measurements, and the whole scan took a very long time. Of course she wouldn't/couldn't tell me...

359 Spot on analysis, CDB! Two phenomena that unfortunately feed this terrible scourge of technocracy . . .

1. The technocrats took notice of the amazing technological breakthroughs of "boring" men like Norman Borlaug and Washington Roebling and decided, "if we can build the Brooklyn Bridge . . . that means we can . . ." cure homelessness, fix everyone's supposed social pathologies, micromanage economies, etc. Wrong.

2. The same reason that our technocratic "elites" (spit!) always fail at their social engineering projects - the world is hyper-complex - is also the same reason they evade any accountability. That same hyper complexity allows their failures to get lost in the wash.

392 I had the argument with a national expert on this 20 years ago. I held that families should be given 10k for organ transplants. Enough to cover a funeral. To be adjusted if the supply increased beyond demand.

She said it was unethical to pay someone for a kidney, even the donors survivors. Yet surgeons and hospitals make a boatload of money on transplant surgery.

What I realized later is this is the way they control the number of doctors involved, keeping surgery costs high. If there was a ready supply of kidneys or organs, costs would drop to the plastic surgeon level. Still good but not what top flight organ surgeons get.

It’s all a scam.

Just like Christians tossed out "pagan" culture and learning and cast society in a thousand years of "the dark ages." The progressives are the new Christians. The irony is this time the Christians are in the position the pagans were two millennia ago. Dark times are ahead.

So it is no surprise that these arbitrary claims of self-righteousness become weirder and weirder.

403 We have a good friend who desperately was waiting for a kidney. She kept moving up the list to the top as her health deteriorated. Finally, when she was in the #1spot, the regional team of doctors in Chicago, who decide who lives and who dies, disqualified her for being too sick to benefit. They condemned her to death. She was told that within 3 months she would die. Her own doctor immediately applied to a new region outside of Chicago, where she was put on the transplant list and given priority. Two weeks before Christmas, even sicker than before -when she was supposed to be dead- she got her kidney. One plus years later, she is doing so mch better, this woman that one group of overlords had condemned to life eternal. Don’t take ‘No’ for an answer. Get out of woke, blue areas. Your life literally depends on it.
