6 It occurs to me that in about 2 weeks I have to go over the tax stuff as prepared by H & R Block, make the necessary copies of things, and mail them off. Big payment to the Feds, by my standards anyway, and I'm due a very few dollars (like, 1-2 gallons of gas worth) from the state.

Late last year I told the Social Security boffins to deduct 10% from my monthly check so I'd be prepared for taxes in '24. It occurs to me that after 4-5 deductions this year, I'd be covered for the next -- especially if I retire. And if I don't, I can tell them to start deducting again. The problem: You can tell them to start online, but you have to write an actual letter to them to end the deducting.

19 It's the Tech Thread so, in Japan, I ran afoul of a Smart Toilet. The place I stayed featured this... contraption which had no handle or anything only a touchpad on the wall featuring cryptic symbols and Kanji characters. I found an online pdf manual by running the model number: no good, Japan specific. In BULLET TRAIN Brad Pitt has almost my exact experience.

More from "angie":

So this morning, I called the advice nurse line, they had me speak with a doctor. The doctor advised me to get a COVID test and scheduled me for 9 am Monday. But I remembered my daughter (who doesn't live with me anymore) might still have a test. She did and dropped it off not long ago, outside in my clear crate on my porch for Amazon & UPS deliveries.

The "clear crate for ... deliveries" is the Rite of Observance for their New Passover.

21 Tech news deserving of being mocked.

"Meta Platforms on Friday launched its subscription service in the US, which would allow Facebook and Instagram users to pay for verification in the same vein as Elon Musk-owned Twitter. The Meta Verified service will give users a blue badge after they verify their accounts using a government ID and will cost $11.99 per month on the web or $14.99 a month on Apple’s iOS system and Google-owned Android, Meta said in a statement."

29 Also Tech related: for Japan really the only planning I did was order a Mobal SIM card to put in the unlocked travel phone. It was invaluable and utterly reliable. Mobal buys or rents from Japanese carriers: it is next to impossible to get a mobile phone in Japan without being at least a legal resident with a bank account!
Mobal, all the way, really good coverage even in mountainous inner Hokkaido.
Highly recommended. It was like $40 US? Well worth it.
You can even get a Japanese mobile # too.

76 It is proposed there are four scientific-outlier phenotypes: con men (and they do seem to be all men), mountebanks, more akin to snake-oil salesmen than working scientists; and two types of scientific heretics — heroes and crackpots.

I can think of 1 man that covers 3 out of 4:
Fauci
Con Man AIDS is a heterosexual disease. At one time he got about 30% of the cancer research money.
Mountebank The Vax Stop the COVOD, then Stop the Transmission, then stop the hospitalization and then finally, you may not feel as bad.

Door dash, of course.

Setting aside the Chinese Lung AIDS for second, Door Dash is fricking insane. It is so insanely expensive, but people seem addicted to it. And people wonder why they are broke. Ok, children. Food is much higher. You are using a service multiple times a day which makes food even more expensive. STOP.

97 mornin yall. I used Door dash for the first time a couple of weeks ago to send a couple of racks of ribs to my sons in Atlanta. A $90 order. The first order was delivered but was wrong, wings and a brisket sandwich. They sent me a picture and ate it anyway. I contacted Doordash and they issued a 'redelivery" that never showed up, so I contacted them again and they issued a refund. I guess I can't complain because the boys got a free meal.

The next day I placed another order for the ribs, and they went over there and picked them up themselves.

We recorded a bunch of audio horn tracks, everything else was MIDI. It was the most fun and the most challenging day I've had in a while.

People, I can tell you why you have a shortage in health care personnel. YOU FIRED SO MANY OF THEM in 2021 for refusing to be injected with an experimental "vaccine"! No wonder you have a shortage of doctors and nurses, and probably support staff. They thought for themselves, exactly the kind of employees you need, and so you fired them. Now you complain there aren't enough doctors and nurses.

Georgia Rep. Lydia Glaize (D) "a lot of those parents did not finish high school.. I am extremely concerned that we would put money in their hands and that entire piece of life in the hands of parents who are not qualified to make those decisions"

This person sent her own kids to a private school :

I am for private schools -- all of my children graduated from private schools," Glaize added during the Monday hearing. "But I am not for them if we take public school dollars and use them for private schools. We paid for it and we were able to."

159 78 "Sound from a device reduces at 1 over r(radius).
Energy from electromagnetic sources are 1 over r squared.
So at 10 feet
Sound approx 1 tenth the power
Energy approx 1 100th the power"
----
I do not believe this is the case. Sound waves from a point source traveling in a medium such as air lose their energy at the same inverse-square rate as do electromagnetic waves, basically due to the two-dimensional expansion of the wavefront. "Sound" if expressed as a pressure wave in a pipe may do better, due to being constrained from open expansion, but internal reflections also attenuate energy.
