Victoria Alonso -- Marvel's 2nd In Command, and Woke Lesbian Hispanic Who Demanded Bob Chapek Oppose Ron DeSantis' Parental Rights in Education Bill -- Out at Marvel After String of Flops Leaves the Division in Disarray
I mention her race and sexuality because it was believed these were armor that made her unfireable, no matter how poor her performance.
But when you start losing hundreds of millions of dollars -- or underpeforming by a couple of billion -- suddenly that armor starts looking thinner than it did before. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was Marvel's latest flop. Based on its opening of $120 million and using the 2.5x box office formula to predict its final global take, I said it would struggle to hit $500 million globally, even though I didn't really believe that. But that's what's happened. And note that, despite being a flop -- Ant-Man 3 still outgrossed Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and The Eternals.Even with Biden-Inflated Dollars, Ant-Man 3 will not match the box office of the first Ant-Man. Marvel's latest disaster demanded a corporate response. And they acted to appease angry shareholders. Victoria Alonso "exited" Marvel on Friday. News of her "departure" broke late yesterday afternoon. They do not say she was fired. But she was either fired, or she was told her #Woke agenda was no longer affordable after the latest bomb from Marvel, and left in a huff. Marvel offers no details for why she has "departed" four weeks into the run of a $250+ million bomb. They don't even offer a cover story. She has no new job lined up. I think she was canned. Victoria Alonso is very fond of injecting woke messages into every Marvel project. She mused publicly that the name of the "X-Men" was sexist, and it might be time to rename them something like "The Mutants" or "The X-People." She announced at a premiere that one of Marvel's oldest character, Namor the Sub-Mariner, was now Hispanic, after being Not-Hispanic for 80 years, and that his name was no longer pronounced Nay-more, but was now Nahmorrh, with a Spanish flair, and that name meant "the boy without love" (sin amor, I think she's trying to say). Even in the new woke Marvel, Nahmorrh, the boy without love, isn't actually Hispanic. He's Mayan or Aztec or something. The Spanish language would be the language of the conquerors of his people, not his own language. But Victoria Alonso wanted to win one for the Hispanics so he's Nahhmorrrh. Although Kevin Fiege cosigned all of the woke agenda choices she's made since being elevated to the number 2 at Marvel, she was certainly the loudest, shrillest voice for "diversity" in the Marvel office. Look at her most recent Woke Bombs:

After four weeks in play, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has grossed $447.4 million worldwide, with $198.1 million coming from the US and $249.3 million coming from international markets. Despite a US debut of $106.1 million, which set a new record for the franchise, Quantumania has yet to overtake the final hauls of Ant-Man ($518.9 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp ($623.1 million). Neither of those movies was a big Marvel draw, which makes the threequel's current haul even more disappointing. In terms of the overall MCU, Quantumania has surpassed the final box office totals of Black Widow, Shang-Chi and Eternals. However, each of those movies was released in 2021, when cinemas were still getting back to full business, and Black Widow even had a simultaneous digital release. ... Sometimes, future releases can save a movie at the box office, but Quantumania is out in every major market. This past weekend, it added $7.1 million in the US and nearly $10 million internationally, so even Ant-Man's $518.9 million could be a challenge to surpass.
Deadline has confirmed that the esteemed Marvel executive and EP of several movies, Victoria Alonso, has exited Marvel Studios after a 17-year run. No reasons were given for her departure, which was effective Friday, and it's not yet clear where she's heading. Her exit is quite a shocker given her amiable demeanor and passion for all things Marvel.Amiable? Seems like a c*** to me. Update:

They're always claiming that half or more of women are super fans of comic books. Literally no one believes this. I used to see Marvel movies in theaters. I saw the audiences. They were 60-70% male. Women who came would come with their boyfriends and husbands. While there would be a groups of boys and men who went together, with no women, to see the movies, there were no groups of girls or women going together to see Ant-Man. These figures they cite are lies, and they know they're lies -- but they claim them to be true to justify their forcing of "diversity."
A consistently outspoken champion of diversity in entertainment, Alonso said during a 2021 Women In Animation panel at the Annecy Animation Film Festival that inclusion, diversity and gender parity "all go hand-in-hand with showing the world as it is." The veteran executive and producer added that you can look at diversity "from the social point of view, the cultural point of view. But truthfully, this is a business. From a fiscal point of view, you are leaving money on the table by not representing.I think 51% of our audience is female, 28% of our audience is Hispanic. If we don't represent the people that watch what we make, eventually they'll go elsewhere because somebody else will figure it out."

Another instance of Alonso's outspokenness on issues of diversity and inclusion came last year, when the openly gay exec called on then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek to "take a stand" against anti-LGBTQ+ legislation such as Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' bill, revealing in an appearance at the GLAAD Media Awards that she'd already had a "45-minute sit-down" with the exec to ask for "courage" on his part.
Alonso added then that members of the LGBTQ+ community "deserve the right to live, love, and have. More importantly, we deserve an origin story...As long as I am at Marvel Studios I will fight for representation for all of us."
Is Woke Marvel entirely her fault? No, it's also Kevin Fiege's fault. But they had to can someone, and they decided to get rid of the diversity hire who really didn't bring much to the table besides her race, gender, and sexuality. It's also CEO Bob Iger's fault -- when former CEO Bob Chapek said he would not be getting into a political fight with Ron DeSantis over the "Don't Say Gay" bill, Bob Iger, then a member of Disney's board of directors, publicly called Chapek out and demanded that he fight DeSantis for the right to teachers to sexualize K-3 children. A lot of people are just straight-up boycotting Disney no matter what the alleged merits of their films. They all suck now, but even if they were good, people would boycott them for using their corporate power to bully citizen voters out of polices they want their politicians to implement. And that is almost entirely Iger's fault. But Iger's not going to fire himself, obviously. He moved heaven and earth just to get back to running Disney (into the ground). I still expect Marvel to be pretty much done within three years. But this is a nice little gift. Midnight's Edge discusses the firing below, and the "shock" that is reverberating through Hollywood that a woke Tripe-Threat Diversity Hire could actually be fired for poor performance. Putting the other Woke Failures on notice. The whole thing is worth the watch. If you just want a taste, there's video of Alonso's woke sermons starting at 2:40.

If I had to guess, this is why she was shit-canned. For all that Marvel likes to talk about its thousands of characters and limitless story options, it isn't true. There are thousands of characters nobody cares about. The MCU got started in second-tier characters, because that's what Marvel still owned. The first-tier properties had been licensed out and Marvel itself couldn't use them. So Iron Man and Captain America it was. They made it work.
All that Marvel has left that people care about are the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Letting a woke idiots deliberately destroy one of two remaining valuable properties would be suicidal. They'll wreck it anyway, but they don't want to wreck it on purpose this time.

There was also drama very recently (in the last few days) about a script for a new Star Wars movie being submitted and the two writers leaving the project completely within a couple of days.
The project is supposedly still a go, but they said that about the Patty Jenkins movie as well before they finally admitted, months later, that they weren't going forward with it.

Like the big two comic business the ideology is destroying both media sources. Rippa59 outsold all non leading Marvel titles combined with Isom #1 and he set up through crowdfunding an actual publishing house. His black character is a lot more concerned with being a hero than being black.

There's little more damage that she can do. Lucasfilm has been driven into the ground. Leave her in charge of it or put someone else in there and the result will be the same. Maybe - maybe - 5-10 years from now, someone can try again with some of the Lucasfilm IP, starting with a repudiation of the Disney era. But not anytime soon.

Endgame really is where they should have wrapped up the Avengers movies. Then start a rebuild with a new superhero team one at a time, just like they did with the Avengers. Rinse and repeat. It's a winning formula, because they already did it. But no, they just had to continue milking that group into the ground.

But they can never make their own original characters, can they? Nope, they have to hijack existing, popular characters and retcon them to be queer. Which is about the least interesting trait about any person out of all of the traits out there. Kill character, wear skinsuit, drive fans away, rinse, repeat.
Making their own original characters would require the work hard work of making characters and worlds compelling enough to gain a fan base. Why bother, when you can steal the accumulated goodwill of those far more talented who came before you.

Relying on particular actors for roles is something that Feige knew from early on was a mistake. They all signed 9 movie contracts at lowered rates. Everyone except Downey Jr. who was the first and was pulling $50 million paydays by the time of Endgame.
He's got a universe, and he started the whole machine running with freaking Iron Man. No one cared about Iron Man.
It could have worked. Hell, the Guardians of the Galaxy were C-list, and they became real money makers. It's just...they oversaturated and, when combined with the miscalculation that streaming was as profitable as theaters, they undermined the brand for a solid 3 years after their height. There's a lot of miscalculation going on, but the new heroes angle is the worst part of it. Making the new heroes awful just accelerated things.

Leigh Brackett co-wrote The Big Sleep w/ Bogart for Howard Hawks, penned SF novels with strong male characters, scripted at least one of John Wayne's Rio [Blank] movies, and did the first draft of the finest of the Star Wars movies, Empire Strikes Back. She knew how to tell a good story.

Talent is spread very thin. The good lower tier talent gets gobbled up by the bigger machines where their voices are washed out of the products. The director of Black Widow was a German woman who made a small movie about a girl trying to survive post-war Germany while taking care of her little siblings called Lore (I think it's overpraised, but feminism).
The machine gobbled her up and said, "You will make a Marvel movie. Don't do anything interesting."
The thing is that machines CAN create a lot of great content, but that requires highly skilled executives at the top. It seemed like Feige was a modern day Irving Thalberg, but it seems he rode an early wave of success he barely understood to a power position where he's just mismanaging everything.

Stories tend to be better when the stakes are smaller and the focus is on how they effect the characters on a more personal level. I think it's really hard to do the "save the world" stories well. Especially when they're not one-off movies, but a series of movies or TV shows.

Small-stakes stuff can work really well for an episode. If you want to do a big overarching plot like the Infinity Saga, you need some of the higher-stakes stuff peppered in, too. Maybe a third of the content, perhaps half, needs to be high-stakes. The rest can be low-stakes and character pieces.
Superman doesn't always save the entire world. Sometimes he's just taking out a corrupt banker over in Metropolis.

I have tried to watch a few shows recently that look really good and are acted well enough, but they don't teach or really tell anything. It's just "this happened, and then this happened, and did you know that this happened?"
I don't watch a lot of TVs or movies but it was enough that I noticed a small trend. Is this what moving picture entertainment has become? Have we rejected the idea of morality to the point that people don't want to teach lessons or reinforce right and wrong (unless gay, of course)?

Every Hollywood executive thinks that audiences are familiar with Robin Hood culturally, like they all grew up with Errol Flynn's Adventures of Robin Hood, but that movie is damn near 90 years old. The last straight adaptation of Robin Hood was Kevin Costner more than 30 years ago.
And what are every adaptation of Robin Hood now? Twists on something that modern audiences have little experience with the straight version. Ridley Scott's is about Robin not being Robin. The one from a few years ago made him antifa. It's weird.
A straight adaptation of the idea without the modern twists might work reasonably enough at the box office. Not Marvel numbers, but make its money back numbers.

they got vague about what "too young" meant in the final script.
TBF, they were tossing around ideas about how the world was different in Indy's time, and how people -- children, often -- got married by age 14. I think they wanted to put that in there to show that Indy is a "rogue" but also to stress that this is a different time.
I don't know how they thought audiences would accept a "rogue" who beds 11 year olds.
In the final movie it's vague but she's pretty young still so if they had an affair years before... well, math says that she was underaged.

Eh, I think that's a separate issue about the preference of subtitles vs. dubbing. It seems to depend on culture. In Italy, everything was dubbed and I had to go to specific theaters to see any movies in English. In France, everything's subtitled.

Marvel's had a frequently appearing gay hero by the name of Northstar since the '80s that"s bounced between the Canadian hero team (Alpha Flight) and the X-Men. It's not as if this is new. The best episodes of The X-Files were the standalones about odd corners of the universe, not the ones about The Big Overarching Conspiracy.
And I've complained for decades that none of the Batman movies shows Batman as a *detective*, evaluating clues and tracking down criminals that are not supervillains. The Adam West series had puzzles with the Riddler, true, but that was so camp I couldn't watch it then or now. Mostly the films seem to be, Villain makes a move; Batman tries to counter it; rinse and repeat until the colossal final confrontation. Batman is all defensive moves.
I'd like to see Batman set up a Mission: Impossible sting and entrap a criminal.

Alonso's job was as a visual FX producer. There have been lots of complaints from FX houses that Marvel Studios demands a shit ton of work in a short amount of time and as a result the VFX in Marvel's movies has been...wanting.
I was stuck at a Petro truck stop last year and they were playing Black Widow in the driver's lounge. I couldn't help but notice how amateurish it looked. Like barely a step above made for TV quality.
Anyway, I doubt she was sticking leftist messaging in the films. But it looks like she forgot what her real job was and decided she wanted to focus on left-wing advocacy instead. Took her eye off the ball, the visuals suffered and now she's canned. Too bad. So sad.
Alas, nothing will change. The next few projects will still look terrible and the leftist messaging won't cease because...wait for it...Disney is a leftist company top to bottom.

They have. The original Spider-Woman had little to do with spider powers (she did have her own cartoon), and instead could fly and shoot energy from her hands. There was a later one that could create webs but nothing else. There have been a couple of others I'm not familiar with.
More recently, we were told that one of Peter's classmates was also bitten by the spider. Her family stuck her in a vault for backstory reasons, and she emerged several (real world) years ago. She's got the same powers as Peter, and goes by "Silk". At the same time and as part of the same Spider-Man super storyline, we were introduced to a number of alternate universe Spider-Man counterparts, including a Gwen Stacy who got the powers instead of Peter. She's been reasonably popular (unlike Silk), and was finally given the name "Ghost Spider", based on her outfit. She showed up in the animated Into the Spider-verse movie.

That is a stretch. Not that it causes harm, but that the harm is specifically immunity. That has not been established yet.
But I saw this with my own eyes during 2021. People would get the vax and miss a day or two because they got sick from it. Maybe half the people who got the shot missed a day or two of work. The real problem looked to be the boosters. When people got the booster shots, more than half of them missed at least one day of work. At least a quarter of them missed a week or more of work.
The first shots had some side effects and made some people sick. The boosters were way worse in terms of proportion affected and significance of the side effects. This is all anecdotal and just what I saw.

Alonso's job was as a visual FX producer. There have been lots of complaints from FX houses that Marvel Studios demands a shit ton of work in a short amount of time and as a result the VFX in Marvel's movies has been...wanting.
I was stuck at a Petro truck stop last year and they were playing Black Widow in the driver's lounge. I couldn't help but notice how amateurish it looked. Like barely a step above made for TV quality.
Anyway, I doubt she was sticking leftist messaging in the films. But it looks like she forgot what her real job was and decided she wanted to focus on left-wing advocacy instead. Took her eye off the ball, the visuals suffered and now she's canned. Too bad. So sad.
Alas, nothing will change. The next few projects will still look terrible and the leftist messaging won't cease because...wait for it...Disney is a leftist company top to bottom.

The problem, if I may say so, with feminists is that they live in a fantasy narrative about the Patriarchy. So when they address that in a movie, to "represent" women, only feminists who live in that narrative like it. For everyone else it misses. If the "woke" represent different races or disabilities, they'll do it through that woke lens and for everyone else it will miss.
It's very possible to give women something they'll like in a super hero adventure show. Like, oh, shirtless Chris. Any Chris. All the Chrises. Shirtless. Just as it's possible to "represent" diversity without kicking white men in the teeth. It just takes not living in a fantasy reality that audiences won't recognize.

I don't know about TV adaptations, but in the Silver Age comics the deal was that Superman had to get him to say his own name *backwards* to banish him back to the dimension he came from. As I recall, that was also true in the animated TV shows that used the character. He's basically an annoying character with godlike power (like Q from ST: TNG) who has that singular weakness. It's the only way to give Superman a way to defeat him, as he is far more powerful on a level playing field.

Of those four movies, I have only watched 20 minutes of Shang-Chi, and then I turned it off out of boredom. I'm not saying this to assert I'm too cool to watch modern movies or Marvel movies. I really enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy and I have enjoyed The Mandalorian a lot. I'm saying I think I'm generally close to the core audience for Marvel movies and I don't care about them anymore. While it's certainly true that some gamers play mobile games, the reverse is almost never true. Very few people that play mostly mobile games also play console or PC games. The console/PC crowd it's heavily, overwhelmingly male. Very few, if any (I certainly don't know any) mobile gamers tweak gear, min/max, clan, mod, etc. I brought this up in a debate on this topic once an was labeled a white supremacist gatekeeper, lol.

It was flat from Prince Caspian while both were heavily down from the first film which made about $745 million.
I'm sure politics was part of it, not wanting to continue involvement with a pro-Christian piece, but it was a franchise that seemed to be withering and a shaky investment at the same time.

My reloading manuals warn against Brasso on ammo cases, as it makes brass brittle. Doesn't matter on a pan bottom, on rifle cases at 60,000 psi+ it does. Don't know about tubas.

bear in mind that the studio does not take the full ticket sale -- they split that with the theaters. In the US, the deal for marvel is usually 90% of ticket price for the first week or first two, then 60% after that. Foreign markets want 50% or more.
So you can't just go "it made $470 million for marvel." No, it made $470 million for everyone, and marvel takes about 60% of that.

Our dad would give us money for camping trips, the ride, and we went to this magic store 3 blocks away and he had shelves and shelves of comic books, used, I mean you could by new, but hey. We would get like 50 and then trade them back, at a monetary loss, but the guy had to make a living , but it was wonderful.

Bratty teenage daughter. Nobody likes a wise-ass teen. It's not a woke thing just a parent thing. Especially when that teen was a sweet kid in the previous two movies.
The kind is an "activist", and that is seen as "good". Why not have her be an EMT?
The star of the show (ant man) is being overshadowed and constantly saved by female co-stars. Even in the most mundane ways.
Some janky special effects. Poor management of the geography.
Too many characters, each needing their special moment.

(Like 12% of the potential audience is Black but only 3% at best is Gay.) SECOND, you can't sell targeted crap to ANY audience. The female Doctor Who didn't add a bunch of new female fans... female fans wanted to vicariously be the Doctor's COMPANION.
