The Marble Caves of Pantagonia, Chile

"Hydrating the reptile," if you know what I mean.

They allow hospital comfort dogs now?

Kitten teaches a ball of yarn who's boss. Thanks to Anon Y. Mous.

What a crazy boxer! Just kidding, I can see who it is. (Hint: he's more of a Nutty Pugilist than a crazy boxer.) I'm not the only Big Dummy who gets swindled by deceptively-captioned video.

I've linked this before. The horse is for the ladies, the rider is for the boys.

The Owl family. 50% better than the Partridge Family.

I don't care what lies nurse ratchet tells, this river otter is a real cutie-pie.

Faces of Fear.

Seal gives birth and thinks maybe her pup is stillborn -- and is happy to see the pup is very alive.

More pics of the Marble Caves here.

8 Hospital comfort dogs - yes.

I recently had a short contract at a hospital, and got to meet a couple of the dogs that made the rounds. I don't think there was ever more than one on-site on any given day. But they were apparently quite helpful keeping up the spirits of some of the patients

I have a friend whose chocolate lab does the hospital rounds a few times a year.

I wonder how they deal with patients with animal allergies? I suppose hospital HVAC can deal with it; it's not like they can refuse to treat cat owners because they guy in the next room might be allergic.....

It's weird where I live in Wyoming. We have no squirrels. First place we've lived without them. Our dogs miss them, they love chasing them.

Also, today driving home from the grocery, cowboys were moving a huge herd of cattle to another pasture. Everything stops so they can get them moooooovved.

It really is neat to see that happen.

I haven't been at a fair in a fair long time. One of the lowlights of one was at the ride where the floor drops out and pins you to the wall. The operator decided to try standing in the center and failed, falling sideways right into my friend's legs, crushing them. They spun down, got the idiot out, and did the ride again and things were OK except with that long of a spin I didn't feel quite right the entire rest of the day.

The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, flew two F7U-1 Cutlasses (BuNos 124426 & 124427) as a side demonstration during their 1953 show season in an effort to promote the new aircraft, but did not use them as part of their regular formation demonstration. Both the pilots and ground crews found the aircraft generally unsatisfactory, and it was apparent that the type was still experiencing multiple teething troubles.[8] Among the failures were landing gear failures, hydraulic failures, engine fires while in the air and on one occasion a landing gear door fell on a spectator grandstand but through sheer luck did not injure anyone.[2][9]

And the reason the US Navy Rum ration was stopped? Rum was part of the triangle for Slave trading... African Slaves to Sugar Plantation, where they would make rum... sell it in the US or Europe... to buy more slaves... so once that 'triangle of trade' was severed by the Civil War, they couldn't get Rum.

It wasn't due wasn't due to some moral qualm... it was a lack of supply.

147 That F-7 Cutlass had a rate of climb that even by today's standards, was damn near "rocketship".

Everything I've read about it though, it was *not* much beloved by pilots or maintenance crews.

It's from the early jet age, when the Navy was definitely wringing out the captured Nazi prototype designs, and putting them to the test. The Douglas Skyray was out of that same DNA pool, but was a much more successful effort.

Building models of those as a kid in the 1960s was like holding a Sci Fi future plane in my hands, even though the planes were a good 15 years before my time.

Geez, not dissing the plane, but watching carrier video is boring-ish now, when 90% of the planes on deck are some F/A-18 variant of one kind or another.

192 CAFE standards killed car design...

--

They've done it again recently. It's why the front of cars look so bad, with stubby, blunt-nosed front ends and high hood lines, and those high hood lines force tiny windows to attempt to maintain some sort of car-like proportions (think modern Camaro). They've got to adhere to federal regulations to save pedestrians that walk on the side of the road or cross in front of cars at night while wearing dark clothing, or try to protect pedestrians from drunk driving, which there are already laws against.

That's why your sedans look like crap and why manufacturers are moving to all-SUV lineups. And you're not just imagining that all cars look the same. They do. It's because of those federal regulations. Comically, I did a search to show an example and a CNET video discussing this very thing came up:

Before they came into being, the Expos were almost located in Buffalo, NY.

Montreal didn't have a big league stadium, and Buffalo had "The Rock Pile" aka The War Memorial, which was home to the AFL Bills.

Only some arm twisting, and the promise of a 30,000 seat stadium got the franchise awarded to Montreal.

223 I used to frequently buy tickets to see my beloved Cleveland Indians back in the 70s and 80s. Pretty pathetic baseball on their part but we usually ended up in box seats by the 3rd inning. I was also fortunate enough to have witnessed (and participated in) on of baseball's all-time debacles - Ten Cent Beer Night in '74.

Ten Cent Beer Night was an ill-fated promotion held by the American League's Cleveland Indians during a game against the Texas Rangers at Cleveland Municipal Stadium on June 4, 1974. The idea behind the promotion was to offer as many eight-ounce (237 mL) cups of Stroh's beer as the fans could drink for just 10¢ apiece, thus increasing ticket sales. However, the stunt also had the effect of slowly turning the calm and orderly baseball fans into a rowdy and raucous crowd devoid of inhibition.

I think it was the Stroh's that did everybody in.

249 Ten Cent Beer Night (cont.)

Early in the game, the Rangers took a 5–1 lead. Meanwhile, throughout the contest, the crowd in attendance continually misbehaved. A woman ran out to the Indians' on-deck circle and lifted her shirt and a naked man sprinted to second base as Grieve hit his second home run of the game. A father and son pair ran onto the outfield and mooned the fans in the bleachers one inning later.

Os manager Earl Weaver was brilliant with platooning Lowenstein and Gary Roenicke in the outfield.
Also - John "tonight let it be" Lowenstein was at one point Chris Berman's 2nd favorite of his famous nicknames he used on SportsCenter back in the day. He said his favorite was Bert "be home" Blyleven.

270 Final entry. You get the idea.

After Texas outfielder Jeff Burroughs violently reacted to a fan stealing his glove and cap, the Texas players, led by manager Billy Martin, charged onto the field with bats. A huge number of intoxicated fans, some armed with knives, chains, and portions of stadium seats that they had torn apart, surged onto the field; others hurled bottles from the stands. Realizing the Rangers might be in danger of their lives, Ken Aspromonte, the Indians' manager, ordered his players to grab bats and help the Rangers.

At the time, the Tribe was mounting a rally. They had men on base, and the best part of their line up coming to bat.

We were going to win that game, and then all hell broke loose.

I never saw Burroughs getting harrassed. All I saw was Billy exploding out of the dugout, bat in hand towards the outfield.

I swear he did it on purpose to incite the crowd futher, and get the forfeit.
