79 At least the hair color is natural. A tad zaftig, but she floated two Roman leader's boats. A skilled painting of a well-fed European woman. Cleopatra had Greek heritage.

Having a family tree with no branches is a terrible thing. And the fate of her kid is a cautionary tale of monarchical succession.

80 Gentileschi was an Italian Baroque artist who may have been influenced by Caravaggio. She was trained by her father who was a decent artist in his own right. She had a pretty tough life. Her art tends to be about powerful women and female revenge against male oppressors.

Posted by: Hypnogogic Jerk at March 22, 2023 09:44 AM (x6SYe)

100 Very unusual for a woman to be accepted as an accomplished artist in that time but she deserves it. Her paintings are vivid depictions of dramatic scenes that would connect with an audience. Not as obvious in this painting but she effectively uses light, especially indoor lighting, to bring out the skin tones and clothing sheen of her models. I'm sure there will be plenty of comments about her plump models but they reflect the fashion of the time.

Just a guess, but based on her self-portraits, I think she used herself for many of her paintings.

126 Not only was marrying siblings a thing in Egyptian royalty which the Macedonians adopted, it was also a big thing for the Zoroastrians in Persia.

Which, interestingly, tells you how much of a problem succession was - marrying close relatives means there are fewer people in line to inherit - so considering the relative success of the Ptolemies and the Persians this made up for the genetic risks of close family marriage.

158 North Carolina's Supreme Court Poised to Hand Power to Republicans The decision to rehear a case on gerrymandering—that it just decided last year—is a canary-in-the-coal mine signal of just how emboldened judges now feel about blatantly politicizing their judicial decisions.

In February 2022, the court struck down Republican-drawn maps as violations of the North Carolina Constitution. The GOP plan violated the North Carolina Constitution’s equal protection, free speech, and freedom of assembly clauses by giving 10 of the 14 House of Representative seats to Republicans, even though voters divide about 50-50 Democrat versus Republican in the state overall.

...last year’s state elections changed the court’s political majority from Democrat to Republican. The political affiliation of judges is not a legal basis for overturning cases, but as the dissent in Dobbs noted “No recent developments, in either law or fact, have eroded or cast doubt on these precedents. Nothing, in short, has changed… The Court reverses course today for one reason only: because the composition of this Court has changed.”

The whole anti-gerrymandering thing annoys me more than most in politics. It's never going to go away. There's no "good" or "reasoned" way to portion up areas for representation. It's all just power, and people need to understand that.

Gerrymandering is the spoils of political war. As long as voting is honest, it's fine.

Could easily be about right. "uses it" doesn't mean "chronically uses it" or "uses it every day."

But that doesn't mean it isn't a problem. The data collection isn't even the primary problem. TikTok is designed to be as addictive as possible and it creates a vacuum because its algorithm is extremely good at feeding you more and more content that is like content you liked previously. It also surfaces and encourages the outright sexualization of young girls in particular.

Chinese TikTok - Douyin - used to work like ours. The CCP cracked down on it hard because of how corrosive it was, especially for young women. Douyin is only superficially similar to our TikTok now, and it is one of the most heavily-censored platforms in the world and it isn't entirely about politics. The CCP commissars at ByteDance discourage them from making Douyin-style changes on foreign TikTok, so as to keep it addictive and damaging.

I don't think it was the original idea behind it, but TikTok has become a weapon of psychological warfare.

Then he went to the Greeks and gave them the Persian's battle plans earning their friendship.

239 What I find most fascinating about the kerfuffle over banning TikTok on government devices is that *any* social media activity is permitted on government devices. Perhaps allowing it on an air-gapped system for the purpose of updating government Twitter accounts, but in general?

*All* social media apps and sites are data vacuums. Whether they send it directly to Red China or not is in question, but not that they hoover up everything they can get their hands on and build tremendously sophisticated profiles and dossiers of their users. That happens with all of them. That any social media app at all - or even use of the websites - is permitted on government systems in the first place is a serious problem.

It became holy writ that the magic 13% gets what they want forever. Easy inductive reason says this is part of the Marxist uber alles metaplot, but in reality I think it is a byproduct of coddling the African-Americans thiniking they are entitled to 1/2 due to a particularly ugly but reasonable metal construct. They think "things are either black or white" and make American reality a 50/50 proposition. So the only fair outcome would be a Congress with 50% African-Americans.

This is insane at a minimum there are "5 American racial identities" even if you accept "white as a monolith" you have hispanics, asians, amerinds, and honky and tyrone.

The left coddled this idiocy for three generations in the legal field so here we sit with blacks thinking they are owed 10 years of total American gross domestic product "to make things fair."

Unusual, but it is impossible to know if they knew it was going down and looting it before it collapsed, or if it was just an unrelated surge of corruption with retrospectively bad timing.

This is, for whatever it's worth, the same problem I have when judging the actions of our ruling class. Sometimes I think they're robbing the joint before it falls apart and sometimes I think it's just constantly-increasing corruption and the other problems that correlate with it are not causal.

296 Macedon's rise under Alexander is interesting for three reasons.

1) In a short period of time they conquered most of the "civilized" world.

2) Shortly after Alexander died his mother, son, and brother were all murdered ending his dynasty.

3) The Macedonians that did seize the various parts of the realms mostly wasted their resources on endless war with each other, allowing the Persians and Romans to take everything from them.

391 Use this one simple trick to not have bad effects from edibles - read the label. It tells you to take just half of a piece (gummy, chocolate square, cookie, whatevs) which is 10mg so you take 5mg and wait an hour to see how you feel.

I had a friend that left an edible out and her dog ate it. She didn't realize this at first and panicked when she got home and her dog was acting very lethargic and out of it. She took him to an emergency vet who, after several hundred dollars, pronounced the dog stoned with a high THC count from his blood test. Dope is dope.

What's also interesting is that the Western Academic artists who rendered the female nude would say they were adhering to a classical ideal. However, the true Classical ideal, established during the the 5th century BC in Athenian art said that the male nude was the highest form of natural beauty. Females were almost always covered up, even Aphrodite. Female nudes of that period represented whores or nymphs.

Does not matter if it is gin, mj, coke, etc. or in some cases all of the above, some people will simply do like monkeys did in some tests--live for taking the drug with very negative effects on the rest of us cleaning up their mess.

About 5 years ago my daughter made mini-strawberry muffins with THC butter and dropped it off at my house. She did warn me that being homemade, she couldn't vouch for how much THC was in each muffin. Being a moron, I ate a few of them while watching TV and an hour later I was seeing Aztec temples, the room was spinning, my dog was looking at me with total judgey eyes, and I could barely make it to bed. My only thought was, I just want to be normal again! I must say that it was the best sleep that I've had in a long time and no hangover in the morning.

438 373 The Macedonian Empire was really the precursor to the Roman Empire.
Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at March 22, 2023 10:33 AM (ffbyg)

Disagree. The Romans did not have to deal with the Macedonians until after Alexander was dead because he put all his attention eastward. By the time the Romans really started dealing with Greece, Alexander was dead and Greece had devolved back into a city state arrangement which they could use to play one side off against the Macedonians. By that time, they had also made modifications to the Legions deployment wise (Maniple system) and things were starting to drift toward a more professional army (away from citizen soldiers farmers.)

The Romans entered the second punic war trying to consciously expand their empire. They came out of it with the same goal, but also much more paranoid about organized threats. Phillip V getting involved with Hannibal just amplified that, so when they had locked down the western Mediterranean, all Phillip did during the punic war just painted a bright red target on himself.

Bullshit. Ohio is agriculturally productive. Ohio is a national industrial center. Ohio is essential to interstate river shipping. Ohio is home to more US presidents than any other state. Ohio is the most average state in the union by geographical size. Ohio is typically viewed as the start of the Midwest. The interaction between SW Ohio and Kentucky is significant, partially because the Cincinnati airport is actually in Kentucky and the cultural overlap is interesting. Cincinnati is within a 12-hour drive of most of the cultural and political institutions of the Eastern United States. Ohio has tremendous interaction with multiple neighboring states, but primarily Kentucky, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Ohio's central location makes it valuable not only to the midwest but also to the Mid-Atlantic, Upper Midwest and Upper South.

There's ten right there, and I don't have access to ChatGPT's vast knowledgebase.

Shrugs, we have laws against murder and mayhem because a relatively small percentage of the population cannot control their urges to commit violence.

China tried the whole legalization to opium den thing during the ending of the Chinese Empire and it actually worsened social conditions sort of like San Francisco is today.

I think part of the issue is diminishing returns on most drugs due to tolerance and thus an addict needs more and more to get their high.

Me, dunno about the answer. History tells us that violent repression does work but at the price of liberty itself. Laissez faire probably works but at the price of addicts and society being degraded. Our mid course seems to not be working at all.
