Gun Thread: Still More March Edition!

031923 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Q: Weasel, who is finally making a trip to WeaselAcres?
A: Weasel! Weasel are finally making a trip to WeaselAcres!

Yep, that's right guys 'n gals, I am taking a few days off this coming week and headed to the farm. The weather sounds great and I can't wait to get down there! I'll have some sort of trip report next Sunday. Also - be sure to keep an eye on the 2023 NoVAMoMe info below (no updates for this week).

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

F-Class World Championships

2023 F Class scaled.jpg

Many of the friends I have on the U.S. Rifle Team are now in Bloemfontein, South Africa for the 2023 F-Class World Championships. Matches commence this coming Tuesday, March 21st. Every four years, the very best shooters in the world get together for individual and team matches to decide the very best of the very best shooters in the world. It is difficult to describe the level of skill necessary to be competitive at this level of the sport, not to mention the preparation and logistics involved in getting yourself and all your gear safely to the range.

This is both the Super Bowl and Olympics of Long-Range competitive shooting. Imagine all those years of training and practice and preparation culminating in the range being called hot and getting down to the business of shooting at a 5-inch circle from a kilometer away. You have to be a very cool customer to bring together and focus all of the skills necessary at the precise time and place required. There is an enormous mental component of competing at this level, and its difficult to describe to those who haven't been there and experienced it.

I am not a believer in participation trophies, and at the end of the day there is only one winner. That's the way it is, and that's the way it should be. I have, however, always been impressed by those participating in this sport and the level of grace and good sportsmanship exhibited at even the most routine weekend club level matches. This is also the way it should be. You buy the ticket and you take the ride and may the best guy or gal win. In that respect, everyone involved is a winner.

So my hat is off to all of the competitors from all of the countries around the world who are gathering in Bloemfontein for a few days at the range to decide who is best. I encourage you all to follow the results as the matches start next week. I'll write a little bit about scoring for international competition next Sunday and we can analyze some of the results.

Good Luck to all the competitors, and GO U.S.A.!

Here is something I have long wanted to mention here on the Ol' Gun Thread, and that is how to assess function and condition of used revolvers. Many, many, many of the firearms in the WeaselCollection are vintage, and thereby necessarily purchased in used condition. When looking for a gun I am not typically looking for an example in pristine condition, and find that some honest wear is absolutely A-OK. What is honest wear in my opinion? Well generally I'm looking for signs of normal use under typical conditions and reasonably good care. A little holster wear doesn't bother me at all.

Here's our old pal GunBlue490 with a nice long video on inspecting and evaluating a used Smith & Wesson revolver.

How about you all? As I mentioned the video is longer at nearly 50 minutes, so you may want to save it to watch later. For discussion this evening, do you have an affinity for vintage firearms? If so, why? I happen to appreciate the machining and gunsmithing involved in the production, but there could be other reasons. I will tell you that I have purchased a lot of firearms online, and never really felt as though I was on the short side of the transaction when the firearm showed up. Perhaps I have just been lucky, but I wouldn't hesitate to purchase used again.

Anyhow, this excellent video will give you some things to look for in a used revolver when performing an inspection.

Range Reports

First up, our de-lurking pal Bushi Bear took a nice new Walther to the range and files the following report.

bb 1 031923 scaled.jpg

I purchased my first firearm in October - a full-sized Walther PDP with a 5" barrel. Somehow knowing that my middle aged eyes were having trouble picking up the PDP's white dots, Santa brought me a Holosun RDS for Christmas. Man, it's fun to shoot! I'm trying to go the range twice a month and last Monday, snuck out of work for some Trigger Therapy.

bb 031923 TT Pairs scaled.jpg
Double Taps

bb 031923 TT 2 Fingers scaled.jpg
Dos Fingers

The first photo single shots were pretty decent, so I moved on to double taps. I have a tendency to pull them low left (I'm left handed) when I shoot faster. I was told this was because I am anticipating the shots. The third photo was a new drill for me. Holding the pistol with only thumb and forefinger. Oddly, I didn't seem to anticipate on that one.

Congratulations on the new Walther and that's some very good shooting, so keep up the good work!

Next up, our pal Rihar shares a trip to the family property for a day of shooting!

rihar 3 031923 scaled.jpg

My family has some property near LaGrange Texas (of Chicken Ranch and ZZ Top fame). Its a "Century Ranch" and I hope it stays in the family for centuries to come.

We go there for family gatherings and it has a gravel pit we use as a gun range. This is probably old hat to some of you but we had a chance recently to shoot some "hellfire" shotgun shells for our 410. They cost way too much but they were fun to shoot. I don't know why they are buckshot. I think bird shot would make more sense but what do I know.

rihar 0 031923 scaled.jpg

rihar 1 031923 scaled.png

rihar 2 031923 scaled.jpg

These photos aren't in our gravel pit. In the background is a shed that served as a "convenience store" for the sharecroppers my grandparents worked with in the 30s and 40s. They would sell "soda-water" and peach ice cream there. The property is near the Colorado River about 100 miles from the Gulf of Mexico but someone caught a sea turtle in it near our property in the 40s and my grandmother wrestled down and made soup out of it. Or that's how she told the story anyway.

Very nice Rihar! Thanks for sharing this. Nothing quite like just shooting for fun!

Next, our pal PacosMojo has a skerry result at the range with reloads.

pacos 031923 7237 scaled.jpg

Why you always decrease the maximum recommended powder charge by 10%. Especially when playing with a non-SAAMI specification cartridge (8.6 Blackout) chambered in a home built rifle, and using an insanely fast-twist rate barrel (1:3, yes you read that correctly). Oh, and I substituted a similar weight traditional cup and core bullet for the recommended solid copper projectile, which explains why the bullet blew up into multiple pieces around 30 feet from the barrel and you could see a bunch of holes in the fresh snow. Thankfully, the rifle and Paco managed to survive unscathed. You wouldn't believe I've been reloading metallic cartridges since 1995, would ya? I wouldn't either! Fellow morons, heed these words and learn from my stupidity.

pacos 031923 7236 scaled.jpg

Yikes!

Please - if you aren't going to listen to a guy on the internet calling himself Weasel, then listen to the guy on the internet calling himself PacosMojo! Regarding powder charges, start low and work your way up!

NoVAMoMe 2023

031923 hello-moron scaled.jpg

Not so fast on the gun stuff, buckaroos! We have a little bit more on the NoVAMoMe to discuss. In fact, this will be the first of a long and seemingly endless series of reminders to get yo' big butt off the couch and come out and meet some of your online friends. Let's kick things off with a few NoVAMoMe FAQ.

Q: Is it fun?
A: Yes. Just ask anyone who has been to one. You will have fun, or else.

Q: When is it again? Did you say June?
A: Yes. A thousand times yes! June 10th, from 1pm til 6pm or so.

Q: I'm sort of a dork. Can I just slink-in, watch for a bit and then slink out without having to actually speak with anyone?
A: Yes. In fact, we have strategically placed large potted ferns for lurkers to hide behind.

Q: Will bluebell be there? I really want to meet bluebell.
A: Of course! Well, assuming things go well at the parole hearing.

Q: Is there food and drink?
A: Yes! $30 for a bigly buffet, and a cash bar. We had to bump up the food price a bit to cover costs this year.

Q: Can I make references, even veiled references to the secret MoMe location on the blog?
A: NO! Seriously, please don't.

Q: Sounds great, Weasel! How do I sign up?
A: We will again have an online page with registration and payment specifics, however, it's not yet live as we're still working out a few of the details. Keep an eye out here on the ol' Gun Thread or the main page sidebar for more info in the coming weeks.

OK, I'm talking to YOU Mr. or Ms. I'll Go Next Time. Guess what? The next time is here. It's a really fun event and we would love to have you join us. Hopefully some NoVAMoMe veterans will speak up in the comments and encourage the introverts to stop being big baby chickens and make this the year to come out of the shadows!

Cigar of the Week

031923 Aganorsa CT 1 scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Aganorsa Leaf La Validacion Connecticut.

Aganorsa Leaf is a brand with a bewildering range of names for different lines - I won't even try to sort it out here. And when one searches for the name, one also gets many other brands and cigars as results, since the company is one of the largest tobacco growing conglomerates in Nicaragua and provides leaf to many premium brands. They use Cuban-seed for their tobacco and Cuban styles and methods in their operations. This is my first try of their products, but their overall reputation is very high, so it won't be the last.

In any case, I picked up the Aganorsa Leaf La Validacion Connecticut, in the box-pressed toro vitola (6.25 X 52) at the local. It's a nice-looking golden-brown stick with an Ecuador Connecticut wrapper and (of course) all Nicaraguan binder and filler. The profile here is a flavorful medium. One of the many current Connecticut wrapper cigars that while smooth, has more flavor than has often been associated with that wrapper leaf. Excellent construction and burn, lots of smoke, and for flavor notes I would include cedar, and some subtle baking spice. A solid choice for those looking for flavor in a medium profile. You can find them online for $6-8.

Excellent, rhomboid! Thank you!

Programming Note: I haven't forgotten about the write-up on cigar humidification - I just haven't had time to pull it together. Totally my fault! - Weasel

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

29 That poster up top os confusing. Because it says USA F-Class World Championships. I was trying to figure out why Americans were holding their championship in South Africa.

And, along the lines of South Africa, I hope they aren't packing electronic gear for the competition. Because that is not a very reliable resource in SA right now. It's going out for 8 hours at a time.

Lastly, how well can Americans possibly do, Weasel? They have to do their math in metric! That's just obscene.

33 So in the Land of the GGE, I took my freshly minted AR lower with 6.8 SPC upper out to the range. Once there, I learned a sad lesson about the differences between AR-15 and M4 uppers and barrels.

Hint: it's all in the feed ramp.

Long story short, AR barrel + M4 upper = feed issues because there is a lip where the barrel meets the upper. If your lower puts the magazine high enough to feed the cartridges into the barrel feed ramp, no problems. If not...

And mine doesn't.

But heck, a bad day at the range still beats hell out of a good day at work.

36 The homebase of the DMV MGC is closing up end of May. Our replacement range has a max of 50 yards. The homebase has 100, so trying to take advantage of it while it is still available.

First, I had to zero the new 1x8 Vortex Strike Eagle LPVO on my new AR build. It replaced a cheapo $100 1x4. It is 10x the scope and not 10x the money. Which is a good deal.

Speaking of good deals, I got a good deal on that scope as the range is selling their goods off at 15% off. Of course, PSA had a sale on it that was even better. They sell that scope for $499, bundle it with a Vortex cantilever mount for $618 - then they had a $300 discount with a code. That doesn't seem to be in effect right now, but I have seen it twice since I got mine keep your eye out.

It NEEDS to be on the wall at a certain, local shooting range, where it will be venerated, appreciated and frequently inspirational in that exact excuse being used by many an intrepid shooter.

It's right up there in my "excuses" hall of fame, wherein I'll call in bored, or on a really bad day, call in dead and use my bereavement time.

Don't judge. It's not like I'd ever call in "woke", you know.

The thing is, that would only be good for one particular Density Altitude.
Shooting in NH as I did today, with a DA in the double digits would be way off in TX where an 80-degree density altitude would be in the several thousands.
There is, however, a cheap solution. Most ammo makers allow a free ballistics download with lots of variables, DA being one.
But for about $35.00, Applied Ballistics will sell you one with all the bells and whistles.

50 But back to the AR, I'm trying to decide if I should work up the courage to apply a rotary tool with appropriate bit to the barrel to match the barrel feed ramp to the upper receiver, or if I should take it to a qualified gunsmith and let them do it. I'm leaning towards gunsmith, but I have been told it's not a difficult DIY job.

66 I also took my Mossberg Patrol (not the Scout) in .308 to the range to zero at 100 yards. I don't know that I have ever shot that rifle much less zeroed it. Hrothgar joined me to coach a bit.

After gushing over what is to me an expensive scope (that is reviewed as a budget scope on many youtubes), I have to say, I have a very cheap scope on the Patrol. I have this rifle pretty much tricked out in cheap Amazon stuff by CVLife. It has a 550 paracord sling, a carbon filber folding bipod, and a 2.5-10x 40mm illuminated reticle scope with a laser.

That scope is all of $50. The laser is a red laser and it is only somewhat more than a laser pointer. I expect it is not visible in any sort of sunlight, but in a fairly well lit indoor range, it was visible at 100 yards. And we got the scope and laser both zeroed at 100 yards. The scope is actually pretty good. Well, it is to me, anyway.

72 Special range report:
The DMV MGC was missing a couple of members today as Blaster and SRa Blaster couldn't make it but we had SPECIAL guests.
SiD drove from her new home base and Washington Nearsider came as well as our regulars Hrothgar, Iris, EdL and me your intrepid reporter.
I got to check out my Kimber which shot as good as new although I had to again change the battery on the red dot. My next rd dot will be a Holosun which shuts down more quickly when you case it away.
The most fun was WN's S&W 22 with a suppressor. Thing went click click instead of pew pew. Took me to realize I had actually fired the gun.
We then had dinner at our favorite place and the laughter never ended.
If you haven't been to a MoMe, go. This is what happens. You meet wonderful people, laugh til your sides ache and even learn things. Not always things you want to know but still...

From reading about Wild Bill Hickock 's .36 Navy Colt to watching Efrem Zimbalist fire a snub .38 (whether a Colt or S&W) every kid wanted a revolver. 75 Not a lot of shooting on range duty day, but today the rifle match was fun. As usual, only one with walnut, steel, and a manly caliber (M1), though there were a few AR-10s and a nice FAL, so I wasn’t the only one destroying (not just hitting) the targets. Actually shot pretty well. As usual lots of interest and praise for the M1, and I think a few of us agreed to coordinate at a future match and bring only bolts (Mosins, Springfields, Mausers, Arisakas).

78 At the same range day as previously mentioned I put a couple of hundred rounds through the Glock 36. I only had two failures, one was an aluminum case that the extractor managed to gouge through instead of pulling out cleanly so it stovepiped, and the other was due to some old reloads that just kinda went POP instead of BANG. I checked the barrel for obstructions and the projectile actually did go through, it just didn't do so with enough vigor to fully cycle the slide.

That's a huge improvement from where I started, so I've actually started carrying it again instead of the 19.

79 Good evening all
Cowboy Action this morning, with a decidedly Irish flavor to the start lines. Doing better than usual until I loaded, holstered, and stepped a bit to far from the loading bench while on deck wit the loaded pistols. Match DQ.

Some days you have to get the lesson slapped in…

But I figured out how to game the snake. It’s a chunk of old garden hose as a shotgun target at about 10 yards. You had to get it to move around 10-12 more yards past a marker, minimum of 2 shots, maximum of 4. Most of the folks were using a taller stance and almost shooting down. I got good and low - one shot and it was past the marker and up the back berm

Thanks Weasel and all who come here. Always love the gun thread

I believe I have been pointing you to the cheap ARs aisle of the internet. So let me point you to the cheap optics aisle. I am ALL about a red dot from Gaialoop on Amazon that is $25 +/-. You have to search exactly that name to find it. I have one on an AR and one each on two Extar EP9s. Hrothgar has one on his AR, also. It works well out to 100 yards we haven't had a chance to shoot further.

If you want to spend a little more, and add some magnification to the mix, PSA often has the Romeo MSR and Juliet 3x magnifier on sale for $229. That combo is about $260 on Amazon.

Finally, I posted above about a Vortex 1-8x LPVO - that is a really nice scope and a super good deal at $319.

It did happen at a NoVaMoMe, in 2015 IIRC. It's been a while. I understand that since then the event has been removed to an "undisclosed location" that has it's own parking so that is no longer an issue.

Assuming that this "undisclosed location" is going to be the same as the previous "undisclosed location" that is.

90 Reloading report. I just received the Buchanan hand press mentioned (I think) last week. It costs several times what the Lee hand press does but, damn, it is an impressive tool. Folks on The High Road and Cast Boolits forums sang its praises, deservedly. It's shorter than the Lee but is better designed and allows the user to exert more leverage with less effort. I lubed up some 30/06 cases fired from a Garand and 45-70 cases, using Imperial Sizing Wax. I was able to full length resize with what felt like less than half the effort needed for the Lee. I was surprised at how effective it was. If you just have to neck size the operation would be almost effortless.

This press really can do about anything a bench press can for anyone of even average strength. It can even be clamped to a table if desired. Since I do all my reloading single stage, the slower pace doesn't matter. Yes, it costs about $250 but with basic care it could last for generations.

98 I do have a range report today. As some of you know, I've been on a .22 kick this last year, and have focused on accurizing some of my old rifles.
The latest is my 58-year-old Sears single shot, bolt-action, manual-cocking .22. I free-floated the barrel and pillar-mounted and glass-bedded the action this week.
Today at the range I expected multiple one-hole shots . . .
No dice. 29 degrees, snow squalls, and gusty left to right wind. After 4 5-round groups to test mounting screw inch-pound settings, I was ready to leave. After 15 minutes back in the Jeep to warm my trigger finger, I manned up and went back with different grades of ammo. Inconclusive results. Will redo when warm(er).
The things I do for this sport.
But as said upthread, "A bad day shooting, . . . "

Heh. I helped a newphew* get started reloading this week.** He has saved/scrounged an impressive stash of 9mm brass. Day 1 I set him up at the decapping press, showed him what to do and said "Do that until you get tired of it." He did 2000 cases before he had to leave. We tumbled half of it in two batches and I did the other two batches for him between visits. Day 2 I set him up with the sizing die and said "Do that until you get tired of it." He's already talking about getting a Dillon.

I have a Lee single stage and I usually prep the rounds (resize/deprime, clean and sort) way in advance of the actual reloading. Then when I'm ready to reload I do everything one stage at a time. I find it to be relaxing, but like I said, it's been a while since I've spent any time at my reloading bench.

There's a Subaru motor in the way right now that I have to pull the heads off of so that I can dispose of the block. Just one of many projects here at the Refuge that I really need to get to.

112 I also installed a Boyd wooden stock on my Mossberg ATR-100 rifle. It had a polymer stock that made it lighter and easier to tote, but I really didn't like it all that much. It's a mental thing I guess, but I think a 30-06 should have some heft to it.

The rifle shot well with the polymer stock (I was able to ring the steel with boring regularity at 300 yards) but with the wooden stock the recoil is noticeably lighter, and since it's not like I'll be humping the damn thing on extended patrols or anything (just to the deer stand and back) the extra weight isn't a problem.

In my yute, long before I started shooting I played golf. I played in the rain, I played in the winter where you knew when you mishit the ball, I played when the temperature was in the triple digits.

Now that I am 29, I would prefer to shoot in nice weather. I like my comfort. I do not know about golfing in adverse conditions as I have not swung the clubs in a while.

125 I agree with Weasel about getting used revolvers. They are fairly easy to check (trigger pull, chamber/barrel line-up, lock-up, etc.) and they often had less use than semi-autos if only because they are slower to load and unload. Holster wear and honest use doesn't matter. That makes it possible to find desirable examples, like the Smith K-22 and K-38 or Ruger flattop models, in perfect mechanical shape.

It helps that I just plain prefer revolvers.

135 I've two HKs, the 45 and the 30SK 9mm with the LEM trigger. The 45 is SA/DA with safety.

Have you shot a gun with the LEM trigger? There's no safety . . . the first 2/3 of the first shot is the no-safe safety. Subsequent pulls have a shorter reset than the SA/DA HK45. I like the LEM.

I had a 24 handicap at one time. And that was when I was playing once a week. I never had a lesson. Everything I learned by watching other golfers and watching the pro's play on tv.

I am going to be taking up the game again and I am going to look to take 1 or 2 lesson's. Mainly to get more distance with my shots.

With shooting I am trying to absorb everything I can from what I learn from all you folk and what I see on YouTube. I will say my biggest drawback is the mental math needed with the long distance shooting. It is my greatest weakness, not my equipment or ammo.

198 While at the range qualifying for my CCP, I experienced 2, last shot from the mag in which, after firing, the empty casing ejected properly but the slide did not lock back.

I was shooting ammo that was new to me but I wonder if I was limp-wristing my weapon on that last shot.

I feel bad for my dog. Her mother was a regional hunting champ, but the time to professionally train her would have been 2020, when everything was shut down. I tend to shoot things I can eat instead of targets, but I do practice on clay pigeons. She tries to retrieve the fragments, even without training. The guy I hunt quail with has offered to let me bring her, but she would flush all 150 acres as fast as she could run.

201 #135, Mr. G ...

I have two H&K's: a P2000sk and a full size .45. Both have LEM triggers and I certainly enjoy shooting them. Many of the guys I shoot with are 1911 owners and generally shoot SA only. Some shoot one flavor or another of SA/DA. They disparage the LEM, but I like to think that it has made me a better shooter by forcing me to pay attention! I like the LEM, especially as a defensive weapon and think that some number shooters are confused by individuals saying it is a DA-ony pistol.

204 153 I have been thinking about the Walther pdp f series for my next gun but this week started researching the HK VP9. It seems similar in size to my G48 and says it is good for weak hands. It is a bit pricy compared to the Walther, but it is it worth it?
Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at March 19, 2023 08:13 PM
Sharo, you might want to try a HK P30S-V3S. If you can wait until October you can try mine. To me there's not a lot of difference between grip size of it and G48.

205 Hi weasel! Thank You for the forum.

No range time last couple weeks due to the covids, but looking forward to next week hopefully. Need to put more rounds through the new Ronin.

I did manage to field strip, clean, lube and put back together again. No parts leftover, either.

Haven't found the right holster yet though. It's larger, slightly, than the G42 and quite a bit heavier. I may need to convert a crossbody bag to a carry bag by velcroing in a holster.

My old brits were from the national champ runner up.

I wish I had been a good enough hunter to match their skills!

At that time I hunted with some pretty old guys. I have seen them hold a covey with a point and an honor for over 10" as I got everyone into shooting position.

and being naturally lazy, I lost interest

so lighter even than my 637? wow. pretty cool. always sorta wanted one of those for the early morning carry, to not weigh down the robe pockets too much ... lol

yeah, .357 would probably hurt ... but worth it if it's needed! maybe load a couple .357 as the last 2 shots in the cylinder ... if the first few don't do it.

in the 637's I run dirt-standard 158 RNL mostly, I keep the speedstrips loaded with 158 FMJ so that I'm not rubbing lead all over everything in my pockets ... but that's for a +P rated frame, not a 340 or a 60. just as glad, really. .38 is plenty much enough for a firearm that weighs a pound, loaded, imho.

Cigars Daily is a Phoenix cigar store/online retailer, and the quirky fanatical co-owner does a live-stream every Sunday (on Utoob, with extra/less censored portion that follows on their own website). Can be interesting, it's usually at least nice mindless Sunday night/with a glass of good Barbados aged rum fare.

274 Shooting in snow. Only time for me was up at the very nice county range complex north of Reno, mid-winter, as my day off from x-c skiing up in the Sierras. RO had a heated booth! Was fun ringing the gongs with the Mosin, and of course the rifle felt right at home in the low 30s.

Would love to shoot in the snow a la biathlon, but alas the geography has always been wrong. Once talked with a guy out practicing (he carried the rifle, but no ammo, and didn't shoot, just went through the motions at the shooting range area) at a beautiful x-c complex in CO. Was very envious. There was a "recreational" level biathlon circuit. Damn.

278 I am second to none in my pristine ignorance of all things "optics" and scopes and so on - I just know they're the funny looking tubular things on top of these black plastic things that shoot BBs or something.

But once on duty day at the range a guy had me shoot his new Ruger PCC. The version with the heat-shield that resembles that of a PPsh-41 Soviet sub-machine gun (my grail, uh, sub-machine gun, I guess). He had the Feyachi red dot on it (was under $20 at the time). Raise rifle. See my steel plate hanging at the crotch of the 100-yd range, against the hillside. Bang. Clink. Bang. Clink. For as long as I wanted. Pretty impressive. Like a video game or something.

283 Cicero down here in SD County the last sheriff responded to a challenger who was prioritizing "shall issue" by caving on the topic. All the guys at the club where I shot the rifle match today got their CCs pronto back then. I think it's still like that. This pre-dated Bruen by quite a bit. Woulda thought your county would have been dangerously gun-nuttish and had "shall issue" already? Not like you're in LA County or something.

I have two. Both of them had to be re-barreled before they were worth a damn, one would hang the fired cartridges up because the chamber was too tight and the second one had a twist in the barrel that would make it shoot high and left until the barrel warmed up. They're OK now, uninspiring, but OK.

I do like my Sig. So does the wife, so much so that I had to buy her one of her own so she would give mine back.

290 GGE, my Soviet surplus 54R ammo is down to close to 3,000 rounds. I mean, that's not even the daily combat allocation for a rifle company on the northern shoulder of the Kursk salient. I'm feeling insecure about it.

But I do have several hundred of the lead-core Yugo surplus 54R (good stuff, 182 grain projectile, more recoil than the usual stuff). Which I reserve for matches where steel plates are involved. I actually saw that SG Ammo in OK had some of that Yugo stuff a few months back (I got all mine there, years ago). I hadn't seen it on the market for years, there's not a lot left I don't think.

297 Somebody up thread was talking about buying used revolvers. All of mine are used, and 2 somewhat unicornish (long out of production). But in fact of all my gubs, only 2 were purchased new. And of course with Mosins in the mix my oldest is now close to its 100 year birthday (question: does a 1924 Mosin become an "antique" under ATF rules?).

I was fairly new-ish to guns when I started buying, but diligent online research and lots of chatting with experienced people (to learn how to evaluate condition) quickly led me to a set pattern.

Local, used. If you can't shoot the actual gun (a few times I could, a very smart approach by the seller), rent one if you can at a local indoor range and fly-before-buy.

I've met very interesting people, paid a lot less $$, and come up with off-beat or hard to find handguns this way. And my 1943 Quality Hardware carbine. More time involved, some effort, but more than paid off. Of course location/market affect how viable this is.

Including a brand new Sub-2000 with some 3D printed magazines. The magazines were a failure (one spectacularly), but hey that's how we learn.

I went back to the range today to be RSO for some Boy Scouts getting their merit badges. Fun times. And I was able to bring some stuff for the adults that was more exciting than single shot 22LR.
