The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I hope that you realize what damage you have done to the city. I hope, that after today’s city council meeting, you will pack your suitcase and get the hell out of my city.” reporter William Kelly

Quote II

“This campaign for reparations is led by leftist grifters looking to sell their latest lucrative book about being oppressed and progressives who expect a gold medal for their virtue signaling,” Ex-BLM member Xaviaer DuRousseau

Innocent women, guns and Baldwins. A tragic combination.

Billy Baldwin: ‘Any uprising’ by Trump supporters over arrest ‘will be over in two Ashli Babbitts’

Billy Baldwin’s Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) was dialed all the way up Saturday as the fraternal coattail-riding actor employed a vile form of measurement that appeared to celebrate use of deadly force against unarmed Americans exercising their First Amendment rights.

Leftists everywhere began building their hopes up greater than a child on Christmas Eve as they set to imagine how things would unfold in the coming week should the ever-closing in walls actually close in on former President Donald Trump.

Report: Biden Regime to Arrest 700-1,200 ADDITIONAL January 6 Capitol Protesters

Federal prosecutors in Washington D.C. have told court officials to expect an additional 700-1,200 arrests and charges in connection with the January 6 Capitol protests. Over 1,000 protesters have already been arrested and charged, with the most common guilty plea being picketing in a federal building, essentially trespassing. While such an offense generate a fine if any action at all, federal prosecutors and judges have thrown the book at January 6 protesters and have signaled that they will continue to do so.

CNN Reporter Robbed Multiple Times in SF Shines Unflattering Spotlight on California’s Crime Crisis
“Got robbed. Again. @jasonkCNN & I were at city hall in San Francisco to do an interview for @CNN.”

Umpteen stories about the crime crisis in San Francisco have been written just in the last month alone, with CBS News, NBC News, and the SF Chronicle among the numerous outlets interviewing frustrated residents and business owners alike who say they are at their wits’ end and that the city is failing them.

ABC 7 News has a crime tracker for Bay Area cities including San Francisco, and the stats don’t lie.

“Robberies over the last 12 months are up 5% compared to the annual average over the last three years, according to San Francisco Police Department data through March 12,” the site noted on the “robberies” tab as of this writing.

How a man stranded in freezing, snow-bound Oregon woods used a drone to call Uganda for help

Casey Ryan had a free Sunday. His wife and four children were out of town. The 37-year-old Eugene photographer could do whatever he wanted.

Instead of loafing around the house, Ryan decided to seek out the contentment and peace he always found in nature.

He called a buddy, explaining his newly hatched plan to explore a section of the Willamette National Forest. His friend was in. The two men, along with Corduroy, Ryan’s chocolate lab, climbed into Ryan’s four-wheel drive. Not too long later, Ryan turned onto Forest Service Road 19.

Boomers Are Unimpressed With Current Trends in Society, Miss the Good Ol' Days

Someone on a social media platform asked, “what’s your most painful boomer take”? Over 600 suspected boomers aired their opinions on various issues across life and society. Many boomers seem to have nostalgia, lamenting the shortcomings of modern times.

Elected politicians cause enormous harm to us. But what will be the death of the USA will be the unelected scum sucking bureaucrats. From the Consumer Product Safety Commission to the CDC to the Federal Reserve all of these agencies should be terminated and their employees sent to work in warehouses or coffee shops.

Public outrage over this news forced Biden's minions to rethink their plan. But they didn't take long to sneak back to it.

The Energy Department announced regulations that will ban the sale of nearly all gas stoves on the market. It would ban the sale of 96% of gas stoves currently being purchased, to say nothing of the models bought years ago. The stoves that meet the new regulation requiring minimum emissions technology comprise only a 4% market share. So this would be, for all intents and purposes, a ban on gas stoves.

Too inept to realize the stove that is plugged into a receptacle uses electricity more than likely produced by a fossil fuel. I believe there is a special place in Hell for them.

In Australia it is much cheaper to illegally park in a Handicap space.

The current public EV charging infrastructure is scarce enough without having internal combustion engine (ICE) cars taking up charging spots. While there may have been some confusion when public car charging first hit the scene, there really isn't much of an excuse for parking an ICE car in an EV charging spot anymore. Which is why, according to ABC News, in certain parts of Australia, you can actually be fined for doing so, up to $3,200.

Four of Australia's states and territories—Australia Capital Territory (ACT), Victoria, New South Wales (NSW), and Queensland—have introduced fines for parking an ICE car in an EV charging spot. The fines range from the lowest in Victoria ($369), to the highest in ACT ($3,200) for what is now called "ICE-ing."

It is nice to know that the USA isn't the only Woke nation.

On the bright side they won't be spending lots of money on footware. Genius Award Winners.

Eight years after first using the drug, Oliveri got pins and needles and woke up unable to walk.

Experts are worried about nitrous oxide's potential harms amid the rise of super-size canisters.

When Vito Oliveri first tried nitrous oxide in his twenties he didn't expect a legal drug that gives a quick high to temporarily paralyze him and his fiancée years later, leaving them unable to walk their four dogs.

As recently as early last year, Oliveri, 34, who lives in Portland, Oregon, near some of the best ski resorts in the US, would often ski or take trips to the lakes with his fiancée, Emily Shuford, 30.

"I'd typically be on the mountain on a Monday like today, but we just can't. Emily uses a cane and I probably can't walk a mile. We've been limited to the house, probably since April of last year," Oliveri

EXCELSIOR, Minn. — Two men face felony charges stemming from the December break-in and vandalism of a chocolate shop in Excelsior that led to a big community reaction.

Alexander Running, 19, of Lester Prairie, and Karsten Luttschwager, 20, of Minneapolis are both charged with 3rd-degree burglary and 1st-degree damage for property for allegedly breaking into Truffle Hill Chocolates and spraying a fire extinguisher throughout the entire store, ruining all the chocolate during the lead-up to the busy Christmas season.

Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

The Piano viewers were left in tears following an emotional final that saw blind 13-year-old Lucy win the show.

Presented by Claudia Winkleman, the series follows passionate pianists who perform at public pianos in train stations across the UK.

Unbeknownst to the performers, they are being watched by musicians Lang Lang and Mika, who are looking for one amateur musician to perform at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

One of the performers to reach the final was Lucy, a young girl from West Yorkshire who is blind and has autism. Lucy won week two of the show after wowing crowds at Leeds City station with her rendition of Chopin’s Nocturne in B Minor, leaving Lang Lang speechless.

41 That last photo puts me in mind of the latest shooting that happened at a local mall.

The patrons heard the reports and all took off running. One of the runners had an illegally concealed handgun that went off, shooting him in the leg.

Turns out the first sounds were those of a ladder falling and hitting the ground. I suspect (although it hasn't yet been confirmed) that the actual gunshots were due to the illegally concealed firearm being stuffed into a waistband sans holster, which slipped when it's owner took off running, and the subsequent grab to prevent further slippage caught the trigger.

81 Update: My son has been in the hospital since Wednesday. They are scheduling him for surgery in the next few days, to remove a tumor that is located right at the point where the spinal cord connects into the brain.

They have determined that the tumor has not spread to other areas of his body. As a friend said, "That's good news -- now you know it's only a brain tumor!"

We won't know the kind of tumor, or prognosis or treatment, until they have removed it and sent it to the lab for biopsy.

123 This is why we need to continue to use the "woke" hammer on them.

That doesn't work though.

I was reading about our favorite donut licker (not a euphemism amazingly) Ariana Grande. She's in black face nowadays and created a "black-cent". After pretending to be hispanic she now pretends to be black. A few people have tried to cancel her for it but...no one with any power.

Why not?

Well, she got her career launched on some Nickelodeon show. Her co-star, another teen girl at the time, wrote about how their producer tried to bed her and she said no. Note...that actress Jennette McCurdy, had her career ended over saying no...

So why isn't Grande in trouble? Because she slept with the right people and they owe her favors. And this is the way the left works. So if you or I try to get a leftist in trouble for "wrong think" no one will care. It is just a tool for other leftist elites to use on each other.

Well, the whole power train, actually. But front wheel drive, where the engine, transaxle, and suspension all attaches to one removable subrame, would make it possible to do. I think there are already a few Teslas running around with Corvette engines in them.

Tomorrow, road trip home and back to my normal life. *sad trombone*

Well, you could, but. A Tesla battery and electric drive system can probably put 6 or 700 HP into the wheels at max acceleration, because the batteries can be drained at a very high rate. To get the same performance, you would need a large, high-performance gasoline engine driving a massive generator. Lot of weight there.

But maybe something like a 25 kW genset feeding a much smaller storage battery could give you Prius-like performance. I expect you would have to shitcan all the pre-existing electronics, save for the actual motors.

It was fiddly-shit day, as the siding had progressed to the point where a mess of of both metal and flex conduits from the the service panel down below on the block wall enter the attic through holes bored in the sheathing board. I decided to box around all the conduit, and space that area out from the wall by 3 inches. That involved a lot of cutting and fitting. The box is built, and on the wall, and the siding above it is in place. Three and a half boards, all the same length, will face in the box, and then I can carry on.

I listen to a "local" station owned by i-Heart that plays 80s and 90s rock. Good music but the playlists never change, nothing played not on their set lists.

Today's top-40 radio gets a non-stop playlist consisting mostly of Taylor Swift, Halsey, Lady Gaga, Meghan Trainor, and John Legend.

There is some good music being produced, but you won't hear it on the vast majority of radio stations.

224 Diesel locomotives use electric motors for traction drive. Electric motors have very large torque at low speed.

I imagine someone is going to get some kit together where you can set a gas/gen set in the rear seat of a Tesla. Probably would void the warranty. There probably all kinds of interlocks between the charger and the car.

The spring (vernal) equinox is tomorrow, Mar. 20 at 21:24 Zulu, or 5:24PM EDT.

The vernal equinox is generally considered the start of the tropical year (one complete cycle of seasons), and the sun is directly overhead at the equator at both equinoxes. At all other latitudes, the sun will rise and set pretty close to due east and west.

The vernal equinox point on the celestial sphere defines the origin of equatorial coordinates (0,0) right ascension and declination.

Note that the Gregorian calendar year begins on Jan 1. Yet the tropical year begins at the equinox.

It wasn't also so, and in Great Britain, the "Old Style" year began on March 25, pretty close to the equinox. The 25th is "Lady Day", or Annunciation Day.

Great Britain didn't switch to the Gregorian calendar until 1752, and also switched the beginning of the year to Jan. They did not call it the Gregorian, just the New Style calendar, 'cause Catholic and didn't want anything to do with acknowledging that. They just called it the "New Style" calendar.

It used to be that musicians didn't make much money at all, even if they had a number one hit. The "British invasion" in '64 changed the music industry, suddenly the popular music scene shifted completely from NY to LA, reminiscent of the movie industry maybe? There was few year window of time where getting signed to a major label album contract wasn't out of the realm of possibility if you were in the right place at the right time. Some of those bands made bank. Neil Young famously bought a large California ranch for 100k in cash.

Zeppelin hired a 6'7" huge manager named Peter Grant. In those days bands didn't make much money for live performances. They changed all that, demanding 90% of the gate, and got it. That was unheard of.

That switch to the New Style calendar made some odd changes that many people protested fiercely. It also affected many of the Founding Fathers, including George Washington, who were born before 1752.

It did two things. It jumped the date forward 11 days, and also made 1752 be a year with only 9 months. There was no Jan, Feb, or most of March 1752.

Many people protested they had 11 days stolen from them. And, if your birthday was in Jan, Feb, or Mar 1 to 24, you had a year added to your age after 1752.

Washington was born on Feb 11, 1731 Old Style. He just used his proleptic birthday of Feb 22, 1732. Ben Franklin used a proleptic birthdate as well.

You can TIG Al with straight DC, electrode negative. But you have to use helium, argon won't do it. Helium can keep the tungsten clean.

With DCEN, you can use a smaller diameter tungsten and sharpen and get good penetration for thick plate.

There is one example I know of and that's The Mothers Of The Disappeared. These were mothers who protested the military junta in Argentina over their (mostly adult) children who 'vanished'. Most were killed. But those mothers had favorable press coverage, if not in Argentina itself but in the international press. With our Corporate Media being a propaganda arm of those in power, there is likely going to be no coverage at all. Look at how well the media ignored East Palestine, Ohio. Or the airport baggage thief the Administration thought would be good for its image.

No media = It never happened.

Now one could argue: But 'viral videos'! Well, "they" control that mechanism of distribution, too. Just look at how effectively anti-social media shut down any, and I mean any, negative comments/videos about COVID-1984 Dempanic policies, vax and multiple booster mandates, etc. It's taken over two years for the drug company-government connivance to be exposed.

I've got a $39 Auto Darkening hood from Horror Fright.

With my 1.5 readers behind it, it's doing a fantastic job, and I can dial-in the "darkening" to Just Right, in a trice.

I'll dial the darkening to OFF for grinding though. Otherwise, sparks are enough to trigger the darkening, which is a PITA when grinding. But it sure is nice not to have to take off the helmet and don a face shield for the grinding. Just turn it off, and grind-on.

That said, I'm going to REALLY up my investment in Welding Gloves. Not burn through problems, but falling apart lessons, galore!

A neighbor of mine has a very old, Genuine Heliarc TIG machine. Old school indeed. Well, he's dead now, so it belongs to his son, now.

The HF circuit in that is old style "Tesla tank" spark gap unit. There's a little side panel you remove to get to that, and it looks like some of the old school Frankenstein lab electrical stuff.

Water cooled torch, and foot pedal. He could never do TIG with it, just used it for stick. Another neighbor was a TIG magician, and he would use it from time to time. He welded that neighbor up a nice stainless steel dye tank for his sprayer one time.

He tried to teach that guy's son how to TIG, but gave up. Said junior tried to know more than he did, and it was quit or punch him in the face.

Well, I have 240 both here in AZ, and at home in Alberta. Here, I have a little Harbor Freight flux-core welder. Within its limitations, it works well. Weld a patch in a car floor? Weld up a window grille? Works fine. Not real pretty beads, though. It was well worth the $110 I paid for it. At home, I have a Daytona MIG. Made in Italy; bought for $400 circa 1986. I have run it ever since. The fancy rotary range switch crapped out about ten years ago, and I figured out a truth table for it, and replaced it with three toggle switches; one is main power, and the other two give the 4 heat ranges. It just keeps chugging right along. I use straight CO2 as shielding gas. The Daytona MIG is also a 120 volt machine. I have a stick welder for the heavy iron.

I have Zero skills at TIG, but I have been trying to learn. These new machines make it a lot easier. The older ones, you had to "scratch-start" the arc. Do it wrong, and the arc quits, or you bury the tungsten in the puddle, and have to resharpen it. Then they went to "lift TIG". The tungsten is not energized until you touch it to the work, and then lift off. Now you have HF start: hold the tungsten near the work, touch a foot pedal, and the arc starts.

Old fashioned TIG, oddly, I can do. Because of you can strike a 7018 arc and not stick the electrode into the puddle, you can strike the tungsten, too. With, some practice. Okay. A LOT of practice.

MIG is damn near chimp-welding. Biggest problem I've been working is light wall 1/2" square tubing fusing with heavy wall 1" square tubing. They don't LIKE one another, very much. Got it done, but it did take some trial and error, and a lot of "do overs", too.

342 My wife used to work for a dentist.
She would get a call, as the nearest employee to the office, a few times a year regarding theft of the nitrous bottles from the shed where they were kept.
I always tagged along.
One evening the PD officer who had responded was telling me that hot-rodders were the usual culprits in these thefts.
However, they had found a young man deceased sitting behind the steering wheel of his car with no apparent wounds, but the coroner said his brain had the consistency of scrambled eggs.
A further search of the vehicle found a stolen nitrous tank in the trunk with the valve connected to a makeshift cannula setup coming up from under the driver's seat.
The driver had want the nitrous high, but had not included a pressure regulator in his design and when he flipped the in-line valve got the nitrous slammed through his sinuses and into his brain at over 2,200 psi.

The old machines, such as that Heliarc, had HF start, using that old school spark gap oscillator. That's why they were so expensive.

IIRC, the torch had a little switch for that. You could switch it off during welding, or leave it on continously, and you'd do that for varying conditions.

That HF was notorious to "run everywhere", and that was a little trick they'd do with newbies, pop them with the HF.

344 There is not one linear inch of cannula tubing anywhere on the planet, that could deliver a +2000 psi blast of anything, without first bursting somewhere in the 100s of psi on the initial impulse.

We are pretty much at the same level, I would say. Mostly, I burn 7018AC electrodes with my old buzzbox welder. It has DC capability, but I rarely have need to use it. Been using the MIG for autobody work, and light fabricating. CO2 causes a little more splatter than does argon or MIG mix, but costs hugely less, and esthetically-critical welds are going to get ground, anyway.

To me, TIG holds the promise of 1. being able to do nice welds in aluminum or stainless, which are out of my scope right now, and 2. being able to make neat welds in thin steel that need less finishing.
