"Second Gentleman" Doug Emoff: You Know Who Else Complained at School Board Meetings? The Nazis, That's Who

Emhoff, who has made combating antisemitism a top subject, made the remarks while recounting his recent trip to Eastern Europe during a discussion with Symone Sanders, a former aide to the vice president.

"I met one woman who was saved in the Holocaust in Germany, settled in Ukraine, and is now a refugee again back in Berlin," Emhoff recounted. "Hate is interconnected. You see it in the discourse in the country right now. You see it in the divide that we have. Just going to school meetings, you see that hate that is out there."

Brett T. from Twitchy points out that Gina Carano was cancelled for referencing the Nazis in connection with modern-day woke purges.

But the left is permitted to make these comparisons. Pedro Pascal, Carano's co-star on the Disney+ show The Mandalorian, repeated compared detaining illegal aliens sneaking across the border to concentration camps. Not a peep of controversy was heard.

I mean, the truth is that Disney+ actually fired Carano because she wouldn't use transgender pronouns (as Pedro Pascal eagerly did). So they looked for any excuse to fire her which would not call attention to their "Not-So-Secret Gay Agenda," or make the transgender extremists look like the bad guys.

So they blamed the Jews instead. I guess it's a classic for a reason, huh, Disney?

Meanwhile, Emhoff's " " " wife, " " " Kamala Harris, appeared on Stephen Colbert's Light Political Chat Show to do her second favorite thing, after babbling about "circles" and Venn Diagrams: babbling about how many world leaders she's met, and babbling about how Ron DeSantis just doesn't "understand the issues" like she does.

DeSantis is also hitting all his marks on education and exposing children to drag shows. As Stephen Kruiser points out, he isn't making unforced errors. That's actually one of the situations where "representation" isn't a complete load of horse shit. It's really important to know how people actually use your product to understand how safe it is, and we've all seen the 80 year old grannie who sits inches from the dashboard and her eyes barely over the wheel. It's a perfectly legitimate question to figure out if the car safety measures function well enough for her as for "the average guy."

EMP is an uncertain threat is why and would have unpredictable effects. On communications, for example, a lot of that goes through fiber optics now that is impervious to EMP. Same thing with a lot of military grade chips and other such things.

It gets complicated because of Faraday effects in cars, etc. (metal shielding absorbing and grounding a lot of the induced current).

Essentially, you can test individual components but only big outfits that have actually touched off test nukes and have that data would be able to calculate some sort of estimated effects such whether it would take down the power grids.

No one denies that. But it became apparent that graphite dust from the pencils (which conducts electricity) was getting into electronics, and causing problems. So when the Russians could buy the pens, they did. Even at 25 bucks a pop, it was a cheap fix. They are good pens, and worth every penny.

They're making movies with television-like efficiency. It's not about quality. It's about filling the content quota.

Nothing needs to be good. It just needs to fit into boxes that Netflix wants to fill to optimize the algorithm. It is the studio system at some of its worst.

People forget, but the studios didn't spend all of their time making Casablanca. Studios had several units working at once, and they almost always had shitty B-movie units designed to fill block booking agreements with theaters. It was just content, and nobody remembers the Blondie movies anymore even though they made about 40 in about 10 years.

It was more of a mid-budget thing. Michael Curtiz didn't get put on B-movies. He was far too well respected in the studio for that. Bogart was suddenly a new star from The Maltese Falcon, and he was cheap because he was still on one of those dying contracts. WB got Ingrid Bergman for pretty cheap from Selznick who had her on contract.

It wasn't a conscious prestige effort like The Life of Emile Zola or almost anything they gave to Paul Muni, so it didn't get THAT level of budget. But it wasn't a $40,000 western they shit out in 2 weeks.

WB viewed Casablanca more like part of the noir/gangster thing it had started in the 30s. Those movies effectively built the studio through the Great Depression. It was never a B-movie. It was really common in the studio system. A lot of uncredited work went on through the 20s, 30s, and 40s regarding script writing. Billy Wilder was part of that machine, getting shuttled from one project to another to do specific work on a scene, or dialogue, or complete restructuring. Casablanca was more of a producer driven vehicle, so Hal Wallis was directing his writers to keep up with cast changes, changes in the news from Europe, and other challenges while Curtiz filmed everything efficiently, effectively, and quite beautifully (Mervyn Le Roy would never have made Casablanca look as good as it ended up being).

Both the Visigoths and Ostrogoths spent decades in different periods trying to get land to settle and official jobs defending West Rome and East Rome. This was in a time where Rome had been doing that for generations. But they had weak emperors and feared doing it, even though most of their own army was already Goth.

So in a power struggle in 408, Half Vandal war leader Stilicho was overthrown and executed and the government decided to kill the familes of the Goths in their own army. Naturally they deserted to the other Goths and the serious decline was on. After a few years of failed negotiations, Rome opened a gate for Alaric and he sacked Rome to pay his men and eventually moved off to Gaul and Spain, speeding up the detaching of those areas.

It kind of depended on who was in charge. Most of what I know I got from the book The Genius of the System by Thomas Schatz, and the key to a place like MGM's success was Irving Thalberg and how he employed good, like-minded producers under him in a lean management structure that allowed for freedom at that level but keeping everything in line with the overall philosophy he put down.

When Thalberg died, Louis B. Mayer took more full control of MGM and the management structure almost instantly bloated, pushing MGM into a steadily growing sense of financial trouble until it simply couldn't go on anymore. It was having the biggest movies, but its overhead on everything was just too high to turn profits anymore.

The most successful studios tended to mimic Thalberg. Everyone else had more troubles.

I think there are two problems today - fewer "B" productions where young people can learn by doing and those who grew up when there were more movies (say up to the 50s) dying out.

The other of course is that nobody there has any desire to satisfy or please and audience, in fact more often the reverse. Shows are made to attack the audience and somehow it is counting coup if the audience hates it.
