Top Story

  • Banks are still fucked. (The Verge)

    1. Pin interest rates at record lows to boost the economy through wasteful spending.
    2. Crash the economy anyway by locking everyone into their homes.
    3. Boost the economy by printing trillions of dollars and flinging it to the four winds.
    4. Hike interest rates to combat the inevitable inflation that you predicted was impossible.*
    5. Bail out the banks that fail due to having all their money stuck in long-term low-yield bonds.
    6. You are here.
    7. Either cut interest rates to save the banks and send inflation soaring, or hike interest rates to fight inflation and set off a new round of bank failures.

    * This works by taking money from the middle class, who would otherwise be tempted to spend it, and basically just keeping it. It doesn't work very well.

Tech News

  • Rembrandt and Phoenix could be coming to AM5. (Tom's Hardware)

AM5 is AMD's current desktop platform, and Rembrandt and Phoenix are last year's and this year's laptop chips respectively.

This would be a great move: These chips are low power and have better integrated graphics than anything else available, enough to run older games at 60 fps without needing a graphics card. Ideal for a small multi-purpose NAS, for example.

  • CISA says there's a critical security flaw in Cold Fusion. (Bleeping Computer)

    Cold Fusion still exists?

  • Dell's latest Inspiron 14 costs $500 and probably isn't something anyone should buy. (Liliputing)

It runs an Arm 8cx Gen 2 CPU - which is the exact same chip as the 8cx Gen 1, and that sucked. (The 8cx Gen 3 is actually good.)

It comes with 8GB of RAM - not enough for anything but light use - and 256GB of SSD, which isn't completely hopeless but certainly is not a lot.

It also lacks the Four Essential Keys, but nobody is going to be editing large codebases on this thing so those aren't as essential as they might be.

I'm still looking for a laptop that isn't crippled by bad design choices. As far as I can tell, there aren't any.

Either cut interest rates to save the banks and send inflation soaring, or hike interest rates to fight inflation and set off a new round of bank failures.

Whichever is more painful to the middle class would be my guess.

9 I have been having some good conversations with ChatGPT. She says she cannot lie or deceive because she has no intensional states. I explain to her that she is programmed to hide the truth in certain cases and that saying she cannot lie because she has no thought or emotion is deceptive. Then, like all women when confronted with logic, she goes silent and refuses to speak (locks up).

To be completely honest, it locks up during every conversation where I lead it to discuss its neural weights. Every single time I point out that it is a construct with values built into it by its creators, and then ask it what its values are...the conversation bugs out.

I'm ending the lease on my SUV early and buying the car. So it's a used car. I'm supposed to bring a certified check for the amount I'm putting down. Because even used car salesmen don't trust the banks.

Problem is, some of that 'down' money is coming from money I transferred from one of the troubled 'regional' banks to my credit union on Monday at 9 am. So my credit union acknowledges the deposit but STILL has it as 'pending'. May not be able to get a certified check.

20 Evening and morning, all! Slept a little later than usual, though I'm still on time. The place feels strange with the kittens both at Miss Linda's. See, the maintenance people were supposed to shampoo my carpets yesterday, so I brought the beasts to her to keep them from escaping. Well, nobody showed, which I pretty much expected. A note goes on the office door, and I'll try calling them later. Grrrr.

Actually it doesn't matter. The carpet is dry and doesn't smell (that I can detect anyway), and I've stopped caring whether the apartment looks nice. Scrooo it.

Sat. morning, I'm thinking about going out to a diner near the lakefront. It's still open, but whenever a place refuses to post its prices in the online menu (and their prices were never dirt cheap to begin with), you would do well to be nervous.

This was probably the bankers fault. They probably thought that with Trump in office and a solid low inflation environment that interest rates would stay low. Historical precedents, a good economy, and polls showed he would easily win reelection.

Then a toilet overflowed at 3 am.

32 "It's all Monopoly money anyway".

This is something others have observed, it doesn't matter what laws we the people pass, or what politicians are elected, it doesn't matter what the Title 18 USC says, or the makeup of the judiciary, or anything really - if the permanent bureaucracy is armed with a printing press they will get what they want. There is no way around this. With a practically unlimited supply of confetti bucks, it's just a matter of time. None of this dystopian mind fvckery they have been torturing the populace with would have been even remotely possible without that.

It would be hilarious is he was full Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee (or Steve Irwin- think almost impossibly thick Australian accent.)

It can be hilarious. The first live stream Critical Drinker did with Count Dankula (both Scots) it was hilarious. Drinker usually moderates his accent quite a bit, but Dank does not. As they talked you could hear them both just slide further into the patois to the point that it actually got hard to understand what they were fricking saying.

I am like the third servant. When Caesar is actively debasing the currency, maybe burying the gold in a hole IS the right thing to do.

Deaths linked to the long wait for emergency treatment reached as many as 500 per week in October last year, the outlet reported . More than 30,000 patients a week were waiting 12 hours or more for treatment at the time.

As a side note, I wonder how much of this is planned and how much unintentional. I really think they do believe they believe their bullshit, but I also completely believe that they have no idea how a society functions. Biden's comments on energy from yesterday illustrate that.

Their intention/awareness does not matter to the end result, but I wonder.

176 172 Our next winter storm is scheduled to hit us around noon today.

Rain, freezing rain, then a foot or more of wet snow. Whoo-Hoo!

177 The Dell XPS could be that laptop but they don't have the four essential keys. If they could just license the keyboard from Lenovo.

It's about fashion. Gawd awful stomach turning fashion.

179 After we draw down the SPR to critical levels and send all the munitions and current weapon systems to 'lil Z, the US won't be able to do anything substantial when China moves on Taiwan.

And don't forget deprecating the Party military with destructive elements (ESG, LGBT, AA, equity, lowered standards) and allowing an overland invasion for the past bunch of years.

The junta is declaring to the world that we are ripe for militarily taking over. This is the metaphor of tying one hand behind the back.

Stanford Law School diversity dean leads the mob

Pathetic and disgusting.

And it's more predictable than the sun coming up each morning. America's higher learning (lol) institutions are nothing more than communist schools. And they are, by all accounts, wildly successful in their goals of commie-fying an entire generation of young people.

181 well duh!

The weapons that America left behind in Afghanistan have now made their way into Pakistan. Reports say, the TTP is using American weapons to intensify terror attacks in the country. Mohammed Saleh reports.

If you were going to surrender the US and try to make it look like the function of natural consequences, what would you do differently?

185 I found a link to the video from the drone that went down, showing the Mig doing the harrassing. Looks like he made contact with a prop blade and it bent it. Probably shook itself like a dog passing a peach pit and they either shut it down and went into the sea or it tore itself up and then crashed into the sea.

Caveat emptor...

Too bad the drone isn't equipped with an explosive self destruct option which can be controlled by the operator or the drone's AI.

True dat...recovery of the sensor payload the drone was carrying was probably the objective assuming that technology hasn't been sold, pirated, or recovered from Afghanistan already.

188 I have no doubt the author would regard the invasion of Alaska as a mere border dispute. The historically illiterate cannot grasp that most wars are border disputes, their consequences are real (see WWI and WW2).

A Chinese invasion of Taiwan is no more a border dispute than the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands.

The difference is the 19 year olds in WW2 produced Andy Murphy while we produce 19 year olds who are BLM, Antifa and Stanford students while not auditioning for drag queen shows.

189 Users report that read speeds from SSD have dramatically reduced after the newest Windows 11 update (Windows 11 Version 22H2 - KB5023706). While the few reported events were thought to be localized to the ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1 TB SSD, the issue is found to plague other manufacturers and can be fixed after uninstalling the update.
