Foreground Miniature Cafe

chianaleascillacalabria.jpg
Chianalea, Scilla-Calabria
via Italia on IG

This is a good tip if you ever find yourself in this situation. I don't know how often it would come up, though.

How to solve a Rubik's cube in four steps (repeated). Is that really all there is to it?

Traditional African dance looks a bit like shuffle dancing.

Kind of amusing-- two women making fun of YouTube Finance/Wealth Gurus.

Will you feed my monkey?

Workers on the Chrysler Building, 1929.

Old time special effects.

Another cool practical in-camera special effect. This kind of special effect, the foreground miniature, is my favorite. I think this reveal in The Shadow is done with a foreground miniature. Or maybe it's just a miniature on a table with forced perspective. I don't know. Looks pretty good, though, even though you can tell it's fake.

Camelot in Monty Python and the Holy Grail was just a ten foot tall model placed on a hill (down the page a bit), and made to look like it was very far away. Now that I know the trick I can see the fakery, but before I knew the trick, it looked genuine enough to me.

I think most "Castle Draculas" are faked this way.

This guy made a short video about decent special effects he did on a zero budget. At 5:20, he dresses his one-bedroom apartment to look like the interior of a space ship, including a never-ending hallway made with two sliding-door mirrors taken down from his closet. At 6:52, he uses a foreground miniature to fake a UFO.

I think many people are in this boat: When I can tell CGI is fake, which is almost always, I don't like it, and it takes me out of the movie. When I can tell a more traditional or practical special effect is fake, I often like it anyway, if it's still a pretty good try. I admire the craft and trickery of it, and it doesn't really take me out of the movie, except just to think "That was a cool shot" for a second.

I wish I had one-tenth of this guy's charisma and confidence.

So cute! Sound on.

Is this real, or am I being punked like Lamont again?

Am I being punked?

He'll make the announcement in Monterey Park, California, where 72-year-old Huu Can Tran shot and killed eleven people with a semi-automatic pistol in January, during Lunar New Year celebrations.

Sure, blowing up the Moon is a big fuckin deal, but we have to deal with the Lunar New Year.

Saw a documentary years ago about sabre tooth cats, which has been evolved and died out several times in the cats lineage that was pretty interesting. They said one species alive now might be on the verge of re-re-re developing it, but its pretty small now but oversized. Now that would be a good target for a new cat breed rather than the crushed faces/eyes or bad legs that are the newest trends.

The loss of the megafauna in the Americas is correlated with the beginning of the Younger Dryas, which was a rapid onset ice age reversing the previous trend towards warming and is one of the reasons for suspecting another asteroid strike, this time on the North American ice sheet.

I have a book that describes it - there are combinations that move a color on a corner to another face without disturbing anything else, ones to flip the two on the side so if you know them all you can solve even a random cube pretty fast.

I picked up the book since it had info for patterns of the old 'game of life' i wanted to program into a computer but it was neat. This was some time after the craze first started.

126 "I think many people are in this boat: When I can tell CGI is fake, which is almost always, I don't like it, and it takes me out of the movie. When I can tell a more traditional or practical special effect is fake, I often like it anyway, if it's still a pretty good try. I admire the craft and trickery of it, and it doesn't really take me out of the movie, except just to think "That was a cool shot" for a second."

Same here, Chief. When I see operational airplanes and tanks in movies that now exist only in museums, and dozens of them in a shot, I immediately lose the movie and start examining how accurate and detailed the CGI models are.

I always groan when WW2 movies use footage of real American planes for German or Jap planes, but I give them credit for not using 1/32-scale radio-controlled models that always look hokey to me. The best fake vintage planes effort was in "Tora, Tora, Tora!"

I loved the effort made in 1969 or 1970 for "Kelly's Heroes," adding false superstructures to T-34's to make them into a decent representation of German Tiger I tanks. Instead of using obsolete US tanks and painting crosses on them.

It could also be a bolide turning itself into plasma and torching the countryside.

as it is, the current theories on animal extinction is that all the megafauna larger than a buffalo or a tapir were killed off by a combination of Clovis culture paleoindians and the stress of a new ice age. As for the one, I don't think the Clovis culture was so broad to sweep through two continents, and for the second, the mega fauna was evolved for ice ages.
All the other evidence for and against is being winnowed.

I want to ask the most vocal critics "what evidence would you expect to find in this scenario that would give you a reason to re-examine this theory" but I suspect the answer would be "nothing would prove it, it is a fantasy, no evidence will be found, I am too busy to teach you basic Archeology" (which is odd, most of them teach Archeology and hey, ARCH 101 is where they all started)

Posted by: fd at March 14, 2023 09:12 PM (iayUP)

173 I have a book that describes it - there are combinations that move a color on a corner to another face without disturbing anything else, ones to flip the two on the side so if you know them all you can solve even a random cube pretty fast.
Posted by: Oldcat

I think I had that book. 7 steps, not 4. I still remember how to do it, and still have an old cube as an office toy, because I'm a huge nerd. You don't solve a side at a time, you start at the "north pole" and work your way to the "south pole."

123
456
789

The "5" can only rotate and not move to a different place. So you start with one side, place 2468, then place 1379 (without disturbing 246. Then place the "equator" cubes directly under 1379. Then switch to the "bottom" side now that 2/3 of the cube is done. Get the 1379 on the bottom side in the right locations, then in the right orientations, which is two steps now that you can't change 2/3 of the cube. Then there's 2 steps that you switch between to get the 2468 cubes on the "bottom" side into place.

Posted by: mikeski at March 14, 2023 09:13 PM (P1f+c)

174 The best "solve" of a Rubik's Cube is a well-aimed .220 Swift, right at about 4,000 ft/sec muzzle velocity.

It'll "solve" that thing into pieces, bits and individual molecules like it transforms a prairie dawg into pink mist shining and shimmering in the West Texas sun.

Otherwise known as the Weasel Gambit, it's a proven one-move solution to the puzzle.

He's robbing Paul to pay Paul. His left hand doesn't know what his left hand is doing. Fool him once, shame on him; fool him twice, shame on him. A penny saved is a penny.

Oddly tied to death. Crows show up after the murder, dolphins cause the murder, and staffers end up the victims of murder (ruled a suicide, of course).
