Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Biden Bails Out Silicon Valley Bank's and Signature Bank's Depositors, But Says It's Not a Bailout
Biden claims that this isn't a bailout and also that taxpayers won't be paying for this bailout. Um, if we're paying to put money back into depositors' accounts, of course we're bearing the losses. He means that he will be taxing the banks and the FDIC to pay for this. The FDIC will sell off SVB assets to cover some costs but, beyond that, depositors will be paid with money from the Deposit Insurance Fund. This fund has been built up by fees collected from banks. Any losses to the fund "to support uninsured depositors will be recovered by a special assessment on banks," write Yellen and company. A lot of folks are insisting this isn't a bailout and that it comes at no cost to taxpayers. For instance: The joint statement says, "No losses associated with the resolution of Silicon Valley Bank will be borne by the taxpayer." But this is misleading. For one thing, banks are themselves taxpayers. And in situations like this, the many institutions who act responsibly must bear the burden of bank fees in order to inoculate less responsible actors. Besides, these fees assessed on banks don't exist in a vacuum that only burdens big businesses; banks pass on the costs of regulatory compliance to customers in a number of ways. So the idea that the government's bailout funds come from some sort of magical pool of consequence-free money is silly.By the way: We'll be bailing out Joe Biden's Chinese business partners, obviously. I think they're talking mostly about SVB lending to Chinese companies, not Chinese companies keeping funds on deposit with SVB -- but we'll have to see. Note that a big driver of this is a panic in Mortgage-Based Securities (MBS), which banks hold. Why is there a panic in MBSs? Because Biden's hyperinflation has caused flexible-rate mortgages to skyrocket in costs, and some people are walking away from their mortgages, and then the value of MBSs fall, leaving the banks holding them in a precarious situation. Paul SperryOf course, Biden flacks and the Democrats and the media -- but I repeat myself thrice -- are claiming the big problem is that Republicans made a few minor tweaks to banking regulation. They're saying that by reducing the amount of cash banks were required to keep on hand, this... caused the banks to lose billions in investments? How? No, the problem is that Biden's hyperinflation is provoking another 2008-style mortgage-based security crash. Now First Republic bank has lost 60% of shareholder value, and fears are growing of regional banks collapsing. First Republic Bank shares plunged by about 60% in premarket trading on Monday even after the regional lender announced steps to shore up its balance sheet. Shares of other regional banks and financial firms are also stumbling, signaling continued nervousness despite the aggressive federal response announced Sunday night to protect depositors at Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. Investors are on high-alert for banks with similar issues to the ones that collapsed Silicon Valley Bank last week. Jim Cramer recommended that his viewers buy shares in the bank. Note that these shares are now essentially worthless.
Jim CramerAnyone who listened to Jim Cramer bought stocks in a bank for real money which were quickly worth near-zero dollars. Bear in mind that SVB's investors were certainly looking to unload their stocks-- they knew the stock price was going down. So Jim Cramer told his viewers to help out SVB's former investors by taking the soon-to-be-worthless stock off their hands. Jim Cramer enlisted his viewers to buy out the old investors, shifting the cost of the wipeout from the former investors to the new ones.

OT: Last Saturday night I stopped at my local Walgreens for an item and saw that it was apparently on sale, 2 for $7.00. They rang up at the full price of almost $10.00. The clerk got sniffy when I questioned this, pointing to her computer screen and say, "They only on sale if you a Walgreens reward member." "The yellow tag did not say that." (And it doesn't.) "They only on sale if . . ." "All right. Please give me my money back."
She thrust my change and the product at me and snapped, "Stand over there." "Why?" "Stand over there." "There" was the customer service/refund lane. When this staffer showed up, her attitude and demeanor were very similar, i.e., "Why am I botherin' wit' you?" She was unable to process my refund, so a "supervisor" had to come over. Her attitude was identical. She did deign to give me the sale price I thought I was entitled to. But you talk about arrogance --! They have a sign on the wall warning patrons that "abuse" of employees can be considered a felony. Well, if employees are being abused there, perhaps they are inciting it. The bank is not afloat but seized I believe (so investors in it will lose out).
If the Federal Reserve buys the assets at face value(for more than they're worth), then it will be the banks and taxpayers not paying for things. This is all to the big benefit of the mega-banks, which I believe is part of the motivation. The megas will eventually buy out the smaller banks at pennies on the dollar. The result will be an even more highly consolidated banking market in the hands of a few Goldzilla-sized players. Again, this is part of the motivation: the destruction of smaller business to the benefit of larger business.

the other banks will have to pay instead of taxpayers when the fed does something like this it imposes a fee on all the other FDIC banks to pay for it. Related, the Riegle-Neal Act of 1995 was a massive mistake.
It is what has allowed the consolidation of the banking industry, AND they ability of the left to start turning it to their ends. With over 10,000 banks when the act was passed, banking was dispersed, limiting risk- if one bank fails, it is a much smaller effect on the economy. Today we are under 4,000 and declining. As a result, banks are bigger and risks from a single failure are much higher. I'm generally oppposed to over-regulation, but allowing for massive banks that are now "too big to fail" is horrific. EITHER do not regulate and they can fail on their own OR put restrictions on them so failure isn't as big a cost. We get the worst of both worlds as it is today! Sperry - and many others - have it significantly wrong, and it's tiresome, especially when the basic argument is sound.
The inflation had roots in policies preceding the vile vegetable getting 81M votes - without a campaign, and only talking about disastrous insane policies. The supply chain disruptions started during the general C19 panic (The Great Idiocy), and there were the enormous "relief" bills that were specifically intended to artificially support the economy while it was partially shutting down. There would have been inflationary pressures in 2021-2022 even without the absurd and disastrous Biden-backed additional bills. Probably not the same, and certainly such pressures would have faced a very different overall outlook. The War on Real Energy is yuuuuge in all this, and that is 100% a Biden thing. In addition to that, Trump economic policies had been wildly successful (shhhh, don't tell idiotic Biden voters, and child-adults who care about personality, not policy), and the broad expansion he'd directly helped allow to happen had been proceeding without the inflationary pressure usually associated with such growth. Related, the Riegle-Neal Act of 1995 was a massive mistake.
---------- As was the the Financial Services Modernization Act (GLBA), signed into law by Clinton in 1999 -- which allowed the co-mingling of banking and investment, and deregulated the banking sector while removing restrictions on commercial bank securities activities -- contributing to the financial crisis of 2008. Yup. Waiting for that to crash soon. Prices coming down as interest rates go up. In Kali, just not affordable.
-- Nope. Well, a few, maybe. 2% of the total or so? And those will probably have some other financial issue. But the feds will pay to keep people in their homes same as in 2008. I knew a couple that had been responsible and saved a big down payment get so excited that they would have a chance to buy a nicer home than the little starter they expected to be stuck with, and then the feds kept the overextended people in their homes. That young married couple ended up with essentially the exact same house they would've bought if nothing at all had happened. *spit* Posted by: The Pentagon can't account for $2.3 trillion - D. It's just insane that we're bailing out banks when they directly are the cause of so much of the ruin in this country. The banksters and the feds, hand in hand selling money to "buy" homes. And enslave Americans in a lifetime of debt. In 1965, the median US house price was $20k. $189k today. Median family income was $6,900, or $65k Now it's $385k for a house and only $75k for the median family income. The "price" of a home has doubled but your income is only up 15% since then. Epilogue of "The Big Short": In 2015 several large banks began selling billions in something called a "bespoke tranche opportunity" which, according to Bloomberg News, is just another name for a CDO (Collateralized Debt Obligation).
Mark Baum: So mortgage bonds are dog shit. CDOs are dog shit wrapped in cat shit. We live in an era of fraud in America. Not just in banking, but in government, education, religion, food, even baseball... What bothers me isn't that fraud is not nice. Or that fraud is mean. For fifteen thousand years, fraud and short sighted thinking have never, ever worked. Not once. Eventually you get caught, things go south. When the hell did we forget all that? I thought we were better than this, I really did. And as fun as it is seeing pompous dumb Wall Streeters be wildly wrong, and you are *wrong*, sir. This is a direct failure of the regulators absolute incompetence. Almost everyone in the market knew SVB's unrealized losses in their securities portfolio was over $16 billion and they were bleeding cash. But the examiners were more focused on DEI and ESG than how to give SVB a way to slowly reduce that portfolio and lower the balance sheet risk it created. That's before we get to the fact that Dodd-Frank and other regulations since then which have forced banks to have a certain amount of securities that are held to maturity. Because short term trading is evil, capitalistic and enriches Wall Street or something. This is the result of abject regulatory incompetence, nothing more.

Bank assets = $1000
Bank Investments = $970 Bank cash on hand =$30 Depositors accounts $900 Depositors want to pull more than $30 out of their accounts. Bank cannot pay more than $30. Look at the math here and tell me how this costs tax payers money? The bank has more assets than liabilities, $100 more, the problem is that they did not hold enough cash in hand to pay depositors who want to pull money out. The single biggest reason this happened is because under Trump the reserve requirement for banks was reduced to exactly $0 'due to covid-19'. Biden never fixed this. The blame rests on the bank, it is up to them to know this stuff, but the reason they were able to make such a monumental decision is because of poor regulation. 240 Bank assets = $1000
Hope you guys are all doing ok. I haven't taken out any (more) cash yet but the lizard brain voice is very loud.
Yeah... I'm in the same place. What money I have in the bank I am eyeing, should I cash out? But what will cash be worth if the banks die? Gold is getting more and more expensive, but it won't last. How can I trade a bar of gold anyway, and how do I defend it? I watched the first episode of Connections a few days ago, and Burke goes into painful detail about how we're trapped by technology, that the smallest failure can cause massive problems (he uses the 1965 blackout to illustrate this, literally caused by one failure of one relay). He asks the question I've asked over and over: let's say it all falls apart suddenly, how will you survive? How will you get food? How will you get water? How will you farm without gasoline? How will you heat your house? And if you have all this, how will you defend it? For most people, for the biggest majority, the answer is "I won't. I will die". Deep down, I think everyone knows this, and worse, senses that its coming closer every day. That's where the stupid zombie apocalypse thing comes from, that fear. Posted by: Romeo13 at March 13, 2023 02:09 PM (oHd/0) Yeah, unless the "multiplier" went down for some reason. Why is there a panic in MBSs? Because Biden's hyperinflation has caused flexible-rate mortgages to skyrocket in costs, and some people are walking away from their mortgages, and then the value of MBSs fall, leaving the banks holding them in a precarious situation.
++++ On the plus side, there are far fewer ARMs than there were in 2008. On the minus side, those fixed-rate MBS will sell at a discount if they have to be liquidated to get working capital, just as treasuries will sell at a discount, etc. Rising interest rates are a bitch and a half and since most of this stuff is marked to maturity instead of marked to market, the losses can become staggering if you have to sell early. Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at March 13, 2023 02:17 PM (eYoxG) ++++ The bigger problem with GDP, in my opinion, is how it handles both debt and government spending. It doesn't handle the former at all, and it counts the latter as additive rather than subtractive. Government spending is always inefficient and usually wasteful, yet government spending goes into GDP rather than out of it or discounted. Subtract government spending (or deflate it by some amount) from GDP and compare GDP growth in dollar terms to debt growth in dollar terms for the same period, and see where we have had true blue private growth in the past 20-30 years. It hasn't been much. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 13, 2023 02:20 PM (t0OGg) 438

Yeah that is an issue. Its like movies, people keep asking if Hollywood has learned its lesson from woke/broke but it takes 3-5 years for a movie to go from pitch to theater so the lag is not going to represent any lessons learned for years. I don't think this is the same type of Lehman situation from 2007 but it does make me wonder how many other banks out there are this badly exposed. I also wonder about the legality of backstopping deposits over $250k through the FDIC. I guess this means that there is no actual limit on FDIC insured deposits, so all the actuaries that have worked on risk premiums can just go ahead and light all that work on fire. "They're saying that by reducing the amount of cash banks were required to keep on hand, this... caused the banks to lose billions in investments? "
Presumably, they are talking about reserve requirements, which were indeed reduced to zero (0) a couple of years ago by the Federal Reserve, not Republicans. This would not affect their investments, but it would (and did) decrease the banks' ability to survive a run on the bank. It also increased inflation by increasing the money supply (see partial reserve banking). Posted by: timactual at March 13, 2023 06:29 PM (Cmxuw) 460

It reminds me again why establishment Republicans and weak-minded anti-groomer “culture warriors” abhor President Trump. They can’t deal with simple, blunt, truth-telling. Like oil and water. Now Americans are going to get fucked over even more than before. The Government is using this “crisis” to further consolidate the banking system into a smaller number of Big Banks. Yes, paper/metal money is on its way to extinction, to be replaced with government (Democrat) controlled digital currency which will limit how long it exists before it has to be spent, and with limits on how it can be used. The mortgage issue is a bit different. SVB got massive inflows just as Covid driven central bank action had the Fed buying massive amounts of treasuries and mortgages. It's actually not a bad practice for banks to do that in normal times. But the Fed drove treasuries and more importantly in this case mortgages to very low yields. They so distorted the market with all their buying that newly issued mortgages actually yielded less than treasuries after accounting for the borrowers' ability to prepay. Inflation rockets, the Fed raises aggressively, the wood gets put to treasuries and mortgages. They could certainly have managed their book better. But the purchase of mortgages wasn't....what's the term...batshit crazy.
