Top Story

Silicon Valley Bank, with $175 billion in deposits, went splut and has been taken over by the FDIC. (Tech Crunch)

This doesn't appear to be the usual Ponzi scheme or outright theft that we have become familiar with in recent years, but instead a good old-fashioned bank run. SVB apparently held 97% of its $209 billion in assets in long-term mortgage-backed securities.

Which is fine unless rumours start circulating of trouble at your bank and more than 3% of your customers want to withdraw their money at the same time.

Which is exactly what happened.
SVB is - was - a proper, regulated bank so if you had less than $250k in your account it's insured and you'll have access to it on Monday. If you had half a billion in there - like Roku - you're not going to be seeing your money any time soon. (CNBC)

You probably will see your money, since assets significantly exceeded deposits, but now that the government is involved it won't be quick.

If you were holding funds in the USDC stablecoin you should also start panicking. (Tech Crunch)

Circle - the company running USDC - says it held $3.3 billion in liquid reserves at SVB. The whole point of a stablecoin is that it is backed 1:1 with cash equivalents at banks, and apparently that was the case, right up until the bank ceased to exist.

The result has been billions of dollars in transfers of USDC and congestion and soaring gas prices on the Ethereum blockchain, which to be fair is what happens any time a gnat farts in the crypto world.
The EU, being run by retards, effectively banned 8k TVs. (Tom's Guide)

8k TVs use more power than lower resolution models, and the EU set power consumption limits that would require 8k TVs to run at miserably low brightness settings.

So Samsung, not being run by retards, set its 8k TVs in Europe to run at miserably low brightness settings out of the box, with a button to turn off the crippling eco mode, which since it's an action by the individual and not the company does not violate the regulations.
G.Skill has announced 8GHz 24GB DDR5 memory modules. (WCCFTech)

Pricing was not announced. It will be interesting to see what it costs - and what voltage it runs at - because that is faster than LPDDR5X laptop memory.

Last time I was at the bank they wouldn't permit a $1000 withdrawal, you had to go inside. All during the pandemic they didn't want the viral infected proles in the bank.

Should be interesting to see if bank runs become a thing. A very, very bad thing.

Unless there's more to the story than has been reported so far, no. They had more than enough assets to cover all the deposits, it's just the assets are 10-year securities and they needed to sell them at a loss to cover the surge in withdrawals.

11 in college I was taught that banking all over the world teeters on the edge. (except government banks which just print more money). It must have been an experience banking back in old west where the bank you put money into would be unable to cover a run on the bank Maybe some did, but a bank robbery could sink and bank quickly, and you lost everything. Gold was the only sure thing back then.

The local grocery chain has good French bread they bake themselves. Walmart has stuff that's, well, acceptable if you toast it.

A new building labeled "bakery" has arisen in a suburban town not far from me, but the exterior looks more like a bank combined with a sleek styling salon. I haven't been in it and don't know if they are actually open yet. Compared to the body shop that was there before, it looks weirdly out of place in the historic area -- as if Vidal Sassoon were to open a salon in Andy Taylor's Mayberry.

Mostly "bakery" nowadays seems to mean "coffee shop where you can buy croissants and muffins baked in house."

90 It's supposed to be less humid this morning and less hot too. Rain tomorrow sometime, and then on Monday temps more the way March should be (high 56) instead of sticky soup.

When it gets light I'll decide if I can wash the car this morning. If the roads are still damp from last night's rain, there's no point in washing the dirt off the car. On the other hand, yellow pollen has been sifting onto the car all week, and the rain last night may have just clotted it. Perhaps a quick rinse is in order.

195 I don't know that Henry Fonda was a socialist. He was a Democrat. He died around 1982 or 1983 close to when my mother died. She was a Democrat too but would be appalled at what the Democrat party had become and would be completely opposed to censorship of books such as that of Roald Dahl. Does anyone think Henry Fonda who at one time considered being a journalist in the 1920's would think Big Brother censorship was a good thing or that he would believe in transgenderism?

From what I've seen at ZeroHedge's twatter account and other links there, there were alot of small companies with just millions there [and not tens and tens of] but also Venture Capitalists.

It looks like the plan might be to have a mega-bank take over to cover the deposits.

227 Re: the FDIC, I recall seeing an interview with one of the FDIC brass a number of years ago on CNBC where they said essentially that the system is fragile and can't actually backstop more than one or two mid sized banks. Should have been a yuuuuge scandal at the time, but of course it wasn't. And I doubt anything about that has changed, since government gonna government.

So yes, if we start having bank runs it could get very ugly very fast.

228 to be absolutely clear, the management team at SVB was more concerned with image points than operating a bank. They published how "green" the bank was and the descriptions written by employees about themselves was all about "equity" and not about ability. The bank was woke. Their ENTIRE portfolio of securities was not hedged. Hence when the Fed started moving they were underwater. If they had been hedged, no problems
