Congressmen Smear Liberal Reporters Matt Taibbi and Michael Schellenberger as "So-Called Journalists," Pressure Them to Reveal Sources, Claim They Are Motivated Only by "Clicks" and Money (Unlike CNN and MSNBC!!!)

musktrolls.jpg

One of the main lines of inquiry by Democrats was, "how do we safeguard citizens' rights to speak freely, and limit the power of government agents to squelch free speech?"

LOL, just kidding you sillyheads.

Their main line of inquiry was pressuring Taibbi and Shellenberger to reveal their sources so that Biden can use the government to target them.

Meanwhile, they claim that this entire committee, about the "weaponization of government," is a farce.

NOW TELL US WHO YOUR SOURCES ARE SO WE CAN INVESTIGATE THEM!

Jonathan Turley

@JonathanTurley
·

I have to run to a speech, but I never thought I would come to see this day when Democrats trash journalists for seeking to disclose government censorship work and pressing them for their sources and confidential information...

...They have accused these two journalists as threatening the safety of others by disclosing government censorship efforts. It would all make Joe McCarthy blush.

You can watch just some of these relentless demands for journalists to reveal their sources in this video.

This is being done in combination with another government agency which has been weaponized, the FTC. The FTC is demanding that Musk name any journalists he has spoken with. The FTC claims they're not doing this to pressure and harass Musk until he agrees to sell Twitter to George Soros and Pierre Omidyar; oh dear, no.

For some reason the FTC needs to know what reporters Musk talks to in order to make sure Twitter is properly safeguarding users' personal information.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has told Twitter to provide internal communications, including those regarding CEO Elon Musk, as well as the names of journalists the company has provided internal records to as part of the agency's investigation into it, House Republicans said Tuesday.

The House Judiciary Committee and the select subcommittee probing the "Weaponization of the Federal Government" released an interim staff report on the FTC's interactions with Twitter, accusing the agency of "harassment" of the tech firm.

The report shows that the FTC has sent more than a dozen letters to Twitter since Musk completed his acquisition in October. It states that the agency has demanded Twitter provide internal communications "relating to Elon Musk" from any Twitter employee, information about the platform's Twitter Blue verification subscription service and the names of journalists who were granted access to Twitter records.

Musk has provided records to several journalists since he took over the company as part of the "Twitter Files," which have purportedly shown ways that Twitter and government employees worked to limit or censor certain content on the platform.

An FTC spokesperson told The Hill in a statement that it is conducting the investigation to protect consumers' privacy.

So obviously, there's no "Weaponization of Government" going on at all.

Why are they so determined to find out if Musk talked to Matt Taibbi? I'm not sure, but here's my guess: the SEC, I think, sued Musk a while ago, claiming that his twitter comments about Tesla constituted official corporate claims. Every corporation is regulated as far as what they say about the corporation. This is supposedly to protect investors from false claims, or protect average investors from larger investors having special access to information available only to them.

There was a settlement of that suit, in which Musk agreed to avoid some statements about his companies.

I think the Democrats and the FTC are trying to make a case that if Musk even talks to reporters, he's in violation of his agreement. Then they can bring more government action against him, including even criminal contempt charges maybe, and pressure him to sell Twitter to the Billionaires We Can Trust to Have a Monopoly Ownership on a Vital Means of Communication, George Soros and Pierre Omidyar.

And that, I think, is what all of this relentless bullying to reveal sources and who Musk talks to is about.

Just before he appeared before Congress, Matt Taibbi released one of his most important Twitter Files, this one about what he calls the "Industrial-Censorship Complex" which was born just after Trump's electoral win in 2016/

Glenn Greenwald describes this creation of an entire industry as the Corporate/Regime left (my words) being shocked by Trump's victory in 2016, and then scrambling to guarantee that no Regime candidates would ever lose an election again.

They settled on "Let's just ban all of their speech and keep them from communicating with the public" as their preferred strategy. They couldn't just announce that they were appointing themselves the nation's unelected censors who would rig every single election going forward -- that would be too "blunt," Greenwald says -- so they created the concepts of "disinformation" and "misinformation" to give a plausible justification for why some people's speech would just now have to be suppressed.

To save democracy, you understand.

Taibbi now lays out the main players in this Industrial-Censorship Complex. As usual, I've deleted most of the screenshots and links that serve as evidence for these claims.

[T]he bulk of censorship requests didn't come from government directly.

Asked if Twitter's marketing department could say the company detects "misinfo" with help of "outside experts," a Twitter executive replied:

twittersexperts.jpg

We came to think of this grouping -- state agencies like DHS, FBI, or the Global Engagement Center (GEC), along with "NGOs that aren't academic" and an unexpectedly aggressive partner, commercial news media -- as the Censorship-Industrial Complex.

Who's in the Censorship-Industrial Complex? Twitter in 2020 helpfully compiled a list for a working group set up in 2020.

The National Endowment for Democracy, the Atlantic Council's DFRLab, and Hamilton 68's creator, the Alliance for Securing Democracy, are key[.]

Twitter execs weren't sure about Clemson's Media Forensics Lab ("too chummy with HPSCI"), and weren't keen on the Rand Corporation ("too close to USDOD"), but others were deemed just right.

NGOs ideally serve as a check on corporations and the government. Not long ago, most of these institutions viewed themselves that way. Now, intel officials, "researchers," and executives at firms like Twitter are effectively one team - or Signal group, as it were[.]

The Woodstock of the Censorship-Industrial Complex came when the Aspen Institute - which receives millions a year from both the State Department and USAID - held a star-studded confab in Aspen in August 2021 to release its final report on "Information Disorder."

The report was co-authored by Katie Couric and Chris Krebs, the founder of the DHS's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Yoel Roth of Twitter and Nathaniel Gleicher of Facebook were technical advisors. Prince Harry joined Couric as a Commissioner.

Their taxpayer-backed conclusions: the state should have total access to data to make searching speech easier, speech offenders should be put in a "holding area," and government should probably restrict disinformation, "even if it means losing some freedom."

Note Aspen recommended the power to mandate data disclosure be given to the FTC, which this committee just caught in a clear abuse of office, demanding information from Twitter about communications with (and identities of) #TwitterFiles reporters.
https://judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-subs

Isn't it odd that the Democrats on the weaponization of government panel spent almost all of their time attempting to advance the FTC's case against Musk! And fought so hard on behalf of the very agency they want to empower as the National Censorship Enforcement Board1

Naturally Twitter's main concern regarding the Aspen report was making sure Facebook got hit harder by any resulting regulatory changes[.]

The same agencies (FBI, DHS/CISA, GEC) invite the same "experts" (Thomas Rid, Alex Stamos), funded by the same foundations (Newmark, Omidyar, Knight) trailed by the same reporters (Margaret Sullivan, Molly McKew, Brandy Zadrozny) seemingly to every conference, every panel.

#TwitterFiles repeatedly show media acting as proxy for NGOs, with Twitter bracing for bad headlines if they don't nix accounts. Here, the Financial Times gives Twitter until end of day to provide a "steer" on whether RFK, Jr. and other vax offenders will be zapped.

We've seen this happen again and again: Twitter actually resists government/Censorship-Industrial Complex demands for censorship, and so the government or Censorship-Industrial Complex leaks to trusted Regime "journalists" to shriek about how irresponsible Twitter is being in not censoring, say, Joe Rogan.

This was Brian Stelter's main role at CNN, delivering the demands of the Censorship-Industrial Complex to the public, and attacking social media companies for not being compliant. It is that bug-eyed little jerk*ff's Oliver Darcy's only job at CNN, pretty much, and of course nasty Regime analinguist Ben Collins fills this role at MSNBC.

The algorithm was always the same:

10 Demand Twitter censor someone.

20 If Twitter does censor that person --> GO TO demanding Twitter censor the *next* person

30 If Twitter does NOT censor that person --> GO TO Brian Stelter and Oliver Darcy to scream that Twitter is "aiding RUSSIAN PROPAGANDA OPERATIONS" by not censoring that person

40 If Twitter now censors that person --> GO TO demanding Twitter censor the *next* person

50 If Twitter still does not censor that person --> GO TO Mark Warner, Dianne Feinstein, Richard Blumenthal, and Adam Schiff to make threats about regulating Twitter

The #TwitterFiles show the principals of this incestuous self-appointed truth squad moving from law enforcement/intelligence to the private sector and back, claiming a special right to do what they say is bad practice for everyone else: be fact-checked only by themselves.

While Twitter sometimes pushed back on technical analyses from NGOs about who is and isn't a "bot," on subject matter questions like vaccines or elections they instantly defer to sites like Politifact, funded by the same names that fund the NGOs: Koch, Newmark, Knight.

Important point he makes here: Twitter sometimes pushed back against claims which were of a technical nature, like "this account is a bot." If they could see the account was a real user and not a bot, they'd refuse the censorship demand.

But on subject-matter categories for censorship, they almost always deferred to the Censorship-Industrial Complex.

Including Koch.

I want to strip Koch of its right to speak.

Why shouldn't I? They are determined to take away mine.

Well, you say, so what? Why shouldn't civil society organizations and reporters work together to boycott "misinformation"? Isn't that not just an exercise of free speech, but a particularly enlightened form of it?

The difference is, these campaigns are taxpayer-funded. Though the state is supposed to stay out domestic propaganda, the Aspen Institute, Graphika, the Atlantic Council's DFRLab, New America, and other "anti-disinformation" labs are receiving huge public awards.

Some NGOs, like the GEC-funded Global Disinformation Index or the DOD-funded Newsguard, not only seek content moderation but apply subjective "risk" or "reliability" scores to media outlets, which can result in reduction in revenue. Do we want government in this role?

Taibbi notes that the government's first censorship agency, the CIS, is supposed to only monitor foreign propaganda efforts.

So that didn't allow the CIS to do what the Censorship-Industrial Complex wanted most to do: Stop Trump voters and conservatives and other non-compliant dissidents on the left from speaking.

So they began creating government-funded agencies to "fill in the gaps" and pressure tech companies to ban Wrongthinkers who agitated for election outcomes the Regime decided were non-optimal for their interests and therefore illegal.

The "gaps" meaning the appalling permission to speak afforded by the Constitution, which must be stopped by Regime Enforcement Squads.

One of these groups created "to fill in the gaps" between what government was allowed to do and what it was constitutionally forbidden from doing was Stanford's "Election Integrity Partnership," or EIP, which got tens of millions of tweets censored, and is a "government proxy organization."

It's crucial to reiterate: EIP was partnered with state entities like CISA and GEC while seeking elimination of millions of tweets. In the #TwitterFiles, Twitter execs did not distinguish between organizations, using phrases like "According to CIS[A], escalated via EIP."

After the 2020 election, when EIP was renamed the Virality Project, the Stanford lab was on-boarded to Twitter's JIRA ticketing system, absorbing this government proxy into Twitter infrastructure -- with a capability of taking in an incredible 50 million tweets a day.

In one remarkable email, the Virality Project recommends that multiple platforms take action even against "stories of true vaccine side effects" and "true posts which could fuel hesitancy."

None of the leaders of this effort to police Covid speech had health expertise.

They're Regime Agents -- they have all the expertise they need.

This is the Censorship-Industrial Complex at its essence: a bureaucracy willing to sacrifice factual truth in service of broader narrative objectives. It's the opposite of what a free press does.

He notes that the media has made a woman called Renee DiResta the face of "anti-disinformation crusading," endlessly praising her.

The media usually fails to note that... she's a former (?) CIA agent. She's a Regime employee posing as an independent third-party citizen.

This, ultimately, is the most serious problem with the Censorship-Industrial Complex.

Packaged as a bulwark against lies and falsehood, it is itself often a major source of disinformation, with American taxpayers funding their own estrangement from reality.

That's post 36, if you want to continue reading from there. There's more interesting stuff, like the fact that DiResta's CIA front group, I mean independent citizen company New Knowledge helped create the "Hamilton 68" dashboard, which branded thousands of normal patriotic Americans as Russian bots.

Now, for some clips from yesterday's contentious Weaponization of Government panel.

Taibbi explains the motivation of the Industrial-Censorship Complex.

Has he been reading the comments? Say, where did "conservative whose opinions need to be guided" go?

Shellenberger says he has never before worked on a story where he felt so many "chills going down [his] spine" while working on it.

Matt Taibbi informs the so-called congresswoman -- who represents DC, and so is a "non-voting member," and hence not really a congresswoman -- that he is an actual journalist and has the awards and bestsellers to prove it.

This stupid Fake Congresswoman accused Taibbi and Shellenberger of attempting Literal Violence on poor censors like Yoel Roth. Once again, the left, which is constantly attacking, demonizing, and doxxing the right, asserts that you can never report on any leftist's bad behavior because you will encourage trolls to make fun of them on Twitter and cause Actual Harm.

Michael Shellenberger: Twitter's secret blacklist of top, top epidemiologist Jay Battacharya -- keeping his posts from being shared or even seen, without alerting him to the fact that he had been shadowbanned -- is "Stasi-like" stuff.

Debbie Wasserman-Snaggletooth asserts that Matt Taibbi is lying about what he reported, just to get attention, attract clicks, and make money.

What, does she think he's CNN and MSNBC?!

It is. It's also Soviet-like stuff. It's also Red-China-Like stuff. Go on and on down the list.

Totalitarians are more alike than they are different. The comparisons to "Stasi" or "KGB" or "Gestapo" or "Red Guard" are useful shortcuts, but they can all be used interchangeably. The root cancer is totalitarianism, which is why totalitarians all look more or less alike.

100 Joe Mannix Johnson is right. And just in general, these two guys, plus many others, are always understating the case by about 93%. But some of that is probably because of their lack of substantive heft.

Turley is an amusing/sad case. He clearly is bright and also clearly has a real understanding of the American constitutional system, the law, etc. But his ingenuous, almost pathetic observations of completely routine things - like Dems being clumsy brazen stupid totalitarians with no trace of an American mindset - are really something.

The mindless generally poorly informed tribal/social/emotional self-definition in political terms cripples the country, but it's striking to see it in a genuine intellectually serious expert. Well at least he's moving the correct direction, I guess.

And the error in rules-based or delegated power-based thinking lead us here. Power is frequently seized and control over power must be actively contested. Just because the rules say they can't do something or they haven't been delegated the power to do what they're doing, means nothing so long as there isn't another power to press the issue.

158 "Congressmen Smear Liberal Reporters Matt Taibbi and Michael Schellenberger as "So-Called Journalists," Pressure Them to Reveal Sources, Claim They Are Motivated Only by "Clicks" and Money"

Leaders of religions reserve their maximum hate for apostates who publicly denounce their former religion. The leaders of the new Leftist Religion are no different.

The Leftist Religion is much the same as Islam, IMHO. Both divide the world into the House of Submission and the House of War. Leftist Sharia Law is sternly enforced in the House of Submission. Constant assaults are made on the House of War - it is a holy duty.

One of the few differences between the Leftist Religion and Islam is that Leftism does not allow a person to pay a Jizya tax after his land is conquered and becomes part of the House of Submission. A person who does not submit is constantly harassed and punished.

Uh huh. If you're a company and Uncle Sam wants your data or access to your API, then 99.9% of the time they are going to get it, by one means or another.

I won't go into many details, but I worked for one of the rare-as-hen's-teeth software companies that successfully resisted the onslaught (until it went bankrupt for other reasons), so I've seen all the stages of government "pressure."

They do not - ever - let up.

But most software companies never see any of that stuff, because they drop to their knees and smile like a donut when their dirty Uncle whips it out.

Twitter is one of those.

They don't regularly withdraw the whole amount and FDIC has said "The FDIC will pay uninsured depositors an advance dividend within the next week."

Normal cash reserves should tide them over for a bit(if paid out rapidly by the conservatorship) and reporting has the assets as being largely government debt, which is pretty liquid and won't take an enormous haircut to resell.

Again it does depend on how they handle it but it should be possible to do relatively smoothly in this particular case.

Maybe.

What I find most amusing about the entire thing going back something like a year now is what precipitated it. Elon Musk bought Twitter and blew open the vast censorship and other criminal complexes involving Twitter, opened Twitter back up to some degree and did incalculable damage to the narrative engines that surround it. And for what? What made Musk do it?

Many things, of course, but there was a proximal cause. A "last straw." That last straw was the unlikeliest thing imaginable: the censorship and deplatforming of the Babylon Bee.

This has the been one of the weirdest and perhaps least-predictable sequences of events I have ever observed.

236 ..What I find most amusing about the entire thing going back something like a year now is what precipitated it. Elon Musk bought Twitter and blew open the vast censorship and other criminal complexes involving Twitter, opened Twitter back up to some degree and did incalculable damage to the narrative engines that surround it. And for what? What made Musk do it?

Do some reading on Musk's childhood. He was bullied and beaten to the point of being hospitalized and his home life wasn't all that stable. Consequently he became a huge advocate for free speech and he hates bullies.

And he has an assload of money.

Musk clearly doesn't think small and he seems obsessive about what he believes. The guy out NASAed NASA. He's building his own internet. His souped up golf cart company has a larger market cap than the 5 biggest automakers combined. He's a pretty remarkable guy.
