  • Need a workstation with 120 cores, four high-end Nvidia graphics cards, 2TB of RAM, and 28TB of SSD, but you also want it to look cool? Lenovo has you covered. (AnandTech)

As long as someone else is paying, because that configuration will cost over $100k.

They do have smaller, cheaper models, but none of them are actually small or cheap.

Tech News

  • If you want to build a small, cheap workstation/server - for example in a discontinued Silverstone case that arrived at your door yesterday - here are a couple of tips.

Gigabyte's B650I is a solid motherboard with three M.2 slots, four SATA ports, and 2.5Gb Ethernet. It can drive three displays over DisplayPort, HDMI, and USB-C (one of each).

That's an AMD motherboard, but AMD CPUs use less power than Intel, even when they have the same 65W power rating. The 7900 for example peaks at 89W, and is 50% faster than the 13500 which peaks at 151W. Not a drama in a desktop system but these cases are quite small and will be packed full of drives, so I want something relatively low power.

Silverstone, the same company that made the case, also makes an M.2 SATA controller. The case can hold eight drives, and the motherboard only has four SATA ports, so this is handy. There are other models, but this one comes with a chunky heatsink, which is apparently a necessity if you want these little controllers to work consistently.

And if you want something faster than the built-in 2.5Gb Ethernet, since the PCIe slot is still free you can add a dual 25Gb Ethernet card for about $80. Which is crazy overkill for a small server like this but the price can't be beat. 25Gb switches aren't cheap but it will work fine with 10Gb SFP+ switches or RJ45 transceivers. (25Gb Ethernet uses SFP28, which is not the same as SFP+, but is backwards compatible.)

  • The Solidigm P44 Pro seems like a decent SSD if you can find one for a decent price. (Hot Hardware)

Who the hell is Solidigm? Well, a while ago Intel sold its consumer SSD division to Korean group SK Hynix. This is them.

Also, Nextorage is Sony. Why they don't just call it Sony I don't know.

Posted by: My Life is Insanity

Meh...

We were promised 5 to 8 inches. I'm looking at whats on the porch railing and guessing 2 to 3.

9 Still no snow here, some places in state got it

10 I'll crank up the snowblower to get rid of it until it runs out of gas. That'll save me form having to mess with it in a month.

12 I might have forgotten the misery of snow shoveling

Posted by: Skip at March 10, 2023 04:10 AM (xhxe8)

13 Mild winter here too, so far.

Except for that ONE DAY, when we had to drive 100 miles for hubby's appt... Snow, crappy roads, high winds... Ugh! But the trip home wasn't bad-- bare & wet instead of broken snow floor...

Got to do it again next week. At least it'll be midday instead of oh-dark-thirty.

Posted by: JQ at March 10, 2023 04:10 AM (o0Fxd)

14 I must've been in the heavy part of the snowfall. They predicted 5-9. At least 10" was down the long drive.

Now I get to go do it all again at work. Hopefully plow guy will have already been through the lot. Sometimes he gets the sidewalks done too before I get there.

*fingers crossed/

24 Still wondering if anyone has tried "dusk to dawn" lightbulbs...

>>Wanted to install timers but wiring is kinda scary/beyond my capability to put them in switch boxes at Dad's place. Got the tweekers kicked out, but want lights only ON at night, not *all the time* to illuminate the property.

There bulbs, IF they w*rk, would be MUCH less expensive than new photo-cell fixtures.

Posted by: JQ

I'm going to try a couple. Right now we have lights on timers for a little security. But if the electric goes out, the timers are all sort of fudge jumbled.

Posted by: Bruce at March 10, 2023 04:20 AM (vd8XM)

26 Bruce-- the timers I looked at, had built-in battery backup so no issue w/power loss.

Wiring is so old and crusty at Dad's, I can't deal. Plus: shallow boxes. Ugh!!!!

Will try the lightbulbs first. Worst case? Install new outdoor fixtures. $$$$$

Posted by: JQ at March 10, 2023 04:26 AM (o0Fxd)

27 the timers I looked at, had built-in battery backup so no issue w/power loss.

I just use the plug into the wall outlet kind. They work for what I need, I just worry if we are on an extended vacation and the power goes off.

Posted by: Bruce at March 10, 2023 04:30 AM (vd8XM)

28 One of the... unwelcome guests... was wheelchair-bound.

Plugged its electric wheelchair into outdoor outlet but got stuck in the mud (rainy day) until neighbor noticed & called police.

Anyway-- I've killed power to outside outlets and left porch and patio lights on 24/7 since. They're LED so no biggie for electric bill. Just looks funny daytime.

Posted by: JQ at March 10, 2023 04:32 AM (o0Fxd)

29 Bruce, I was looking at timers that hardwire in the switchbox, instead of indoor switch, to control outdoor lights...

Afraid of the old crumbly insulation on wiring, plus lack of space inside old boxes.

Anyway, will post re: dusk- to- dawn bulbs in a few days.

I can deal with installing new fixtures, but wary of the expense. No job=no income, ugh.

Yeah, paying for "new and improved" and finding out it is neither sucks.

By the way...anyone want to buy some new Curly CFL bulbs?

They are soooo much better than incandescents, especially for reading.

Posted by: Bruce at March 10, 2023 04:44 AM (vd8XM)

31
I had never heard of these "dusk till dawn" bulbs before. I had to look it up. Basically, it's a LED light bulb assembly with a built-in photosensor that turns the bulbs on and off with ambient light levels. Energize the bulb, and it's supposed to turn on at night, and off in daytime.

IOW, a compact version of a photocell controlled light system.

I have no idea how well they work, etc.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at March 10, 2023 04:46 AM (Mzdiz)

32 Thanks, buddy! LOL!

Yeah, I have the idea-- should just buy the damn fixtures-- not waste $ on stupid bulbs...

33 Yes, publius, they *seem* a good deal.

Eh, who knows... I will try them at Dad's. Then, if they don't work in that application, can try to use them at home.

Yeah. I would leave for work at 4 AM. Easy drive for the first 8 years or so. Then the area grew up way too much. Lots of lights with left turn lights that would stop you because it was programmed to do so. Stop. Left turn lights come on, then finally it would turn green.

72 JQ- You are not responsible for the criminal behavior of others and hopefully your siblings will recognize that. Here is a prayer which is for crime victims. If is from a Christian perspective so modify it if that is not appropriate. If the whole seems too much to pray, I would encourage you just to do some deep breathing - breathe in for six, hold it for six and let it out for 6 while saying something like "Bring your light into my darkness,
Lord." Or you can pray on phrase from the prayer linked that seems appropriate:

115 A friend reports that his neighbor put her house up for sale. Its a 1954 sqft underground house, built in 1987 by the widowed seller's husband. On the tax rolls the assessment put it never higher than $154k, the school quality score is 3/10 and CoreLogic, Collateral Analytics and Quantitarium put it around $240k.

The photos are horrible, like it was deliberately done to be worthless (poor lighting, bad coloring, doesn't show the rooms, etc.)

It is listed at $500k in a falling market, a much better home in the neighborhood at $350k failed to finance, comps would be impossible, traditional financing is not available. Even the number $500k is stupid and will be outside many digital searcher's filter (try $499k instead).

My question. Are drugs involved? Is the seller not at all motivated? Or is this part of some real-estate involved money laundering scheme?

What Covenant was broken with God? I'm totally aware of the Covenant God made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and there are with Adam, Noah, Moses and David, but any Covenant to a particular temporal nation is clearly only made to God's Chosen, the Jews; the kingdom covenants w/r/t to "people of every nation, tribe and tongue" have nothing to do with life here on Earth.

If anything, the world is returning to the Norm of all human history - wrought with violence, misery and penury. (read conditions leading to The Great Deluge)

The big picture: The case comes from a large-scale corruption probe in international soccer and FIFA, which has resulted in several convictions since 2015, per Reuters.

Absolutely in flood zone. I was thinking that it should be marketed to the prepper community. But $500k is way out of there. Not Malcom Wells, the late Mr Meyers built the house of his own design for himself and has a nice book detailing how it was done.

From Matt Taibbi: “Some NGOs, like the GEC-funded Global Disinformation Index or the DOD-funded Newsguard, not only seek content moderation but apply subjective “risk” or “reliability” scores to media outlets, which can result in reduction in revenue. Do we want government in this role?”
