Biden Is as Giddy About Proposing $2 Trillion in New Taxes as He Is for Each Coming Tapioca Night

A transformative vegetable.

He's angry about Obama disrespecting and insulting him -- for the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of Obama -- and is getting his stupid vengeance by out-woking and out-leftwinging even Obama. He's an extremely egotistical guy.

Did you know he was an All-American Flankerback for the University of Delaware in nineteen aughty-six? He actually almost accepted a commission to go to Annapolis but he decided against it because they had a quaterback named Roger Staubach and he wouldn't have needed an All-American Flankerback.

He also marched on Selma about forty-seven times. No wait -- forty-eight times. He forgot the time when he was Literally a Puerto Rican Freedom Fighter and joined a march in Brown-Black solidarity.

Remember, this is the man NeverTrump sold as a moderate centrist. And also, as being smarter and more psychologically centered than Trump.

Can't wait to read Jonah Goldberg's praise of Biden's new tax scheme.

President Biden is set to formally propose an array of tax increases on wealthy individuals and corporations in a budget plan that he says will reduce the deficit by $2 trillion over the next decade, setting up a battle royal with Republicans on Capitol Hill.

Right, Democrats famously raise taxes by trillions and then devote every single dollar of that sweet new Government Allowance Money to paying down the previous debts they've run up. They don't just spend the money on Hot New Government Spending for their client groups while also borrowing more money or anything.

So yeah, this two trillion? Right into deficit reduction.

Bank on it. My word as a Biden.

Biden told lawmakers during his State of the Union address last month that his budget will lower the deficit and extend the solvency of the Medicare Trust Fund "by making the wealthy and big corporations begin to pay their fair share."

He has pledged not to raise taxes on anyone earning less than $400,000 annually.

The White House on Tuesday unveiled a proposal to raise the Medicare surtax on earned and unearned income above $400,000 from 3.8 percent to 5 percent.

Late last month, the president proposed a new tax on wealthy households that would require individuals and families worth more than $100 million to pay a 20 percent tax on income and the unrealized gains of liquid assets such as stocks.

Republicans say Biden's budget will be dead on arrival when the president formally sends it to Capitol Hill on Thursday.

"You know the president's budget is replete with what they would do if they could -- thank goodness the House is Republican -- massive tax increases, more spending," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) told reporters.

...

Biden is expected to reintroduce two staples of his 2021 Build Back Better agenda, raising the top marginal income tax rate from 37 percent to 39.6 percent and raising the corporate tax rate from 21 percent to 28 percent.

So centrist!

I'm all for it anymore. At least dodging those taxes will give the wealthy and big corporations something else to do, rather than focusing all their free time on how to lead a social revolution.

America chose this degradation and idiocy over the best economy (and actually materially due to policy changes, not exogenous trends) in any working person's lifetime. Ditto for an erased border and total lawlessness in immigration. Ditto for the enablers/agents of lawlessness on the streets. Ditto for a full-blown acceleration of the looting, impoverishment, and freedom-destruction vs. an under-powered/wimpy but substantively correct push-back on the "climate change" nonsense.

And on and on.

Fauci needs to be charged with murder and fret for just not prison time but what few measly years left he has of his terribly malignant life of corruption and failure. He should be up for the death penalty - how many millions died because of his partnership with the CCP in defiance of both a democrat and GOP president. He should be sweating for his life.

I am sorry for McConnell, but he does need to go. Perhaps McCarthy realizes that McConnell is about done, his power, while still substantial is slipping, and will slip more after 2024 (if it hasn't slipped a bunch last night). Politicians love riding a trend.

You know who else needs to get put in prison? Merrick Garland. Today. Fuck DC. And everyone there who works for themselves instead of the people. Public servants my ass. And that Assistant US Attorney needs to be disbarred and jailed - for about 42 months plus a few years of detention in solitary.

50 When corporations pay heavier taxes, who pays them, ultimately?

No. That's not how real price setting works in this economy. Big corps are not pulling their hair out, figuring out how to lower prices down to the penny, in the pursuit of market share. That's not how it works at all now.

Prices are set at the maximum the market will bear - because real competition is pretty much obsolete. That's what the big corps paid for, when they started flooding money into politics. They bought a lack of competition.

Their tax load has no impact - none - on prices. It bites into their profits. And guess what ? Today's group of Ivy League big corp CEOs don't give a shit about maximizing profits anyway. They care about DEI.

A tax increase, if paid, will simply reduce the amount of money they can spend on social engineering.

And I haven't yet seen the fantasy/dodge that caucus leadership votes are subject to fraud (I should be more patient, it's probably coming) - so, there you have it.

But I guess there's still shadowy foreign plutocrats and sideshow shadowy groups and cabals who might be in charge of picking Senate caucus leaders. The actual votes of a few dozen sitting senators probably have nothing to do with it.

No - they do not. Not always - and not usually.

Again, we don't live in a capitalistic system. There is not over-arching pressure, in most markets, to provide the best price. Prices are set at the maximum the market will bear. And what you see in your day to day shopping is a million different decisions by vendors - all searching for that maximum.

Taxes work on the back end, eating into that profit, in today's economy. Closing the gap between profit and break even. They do not factor into the setting of the price much.

123 Anonymous, during the 2nd disastrous Clinton term, the tech boom/bubble generated so much revenue that by a few measures the deficit about disappeared and in fact lots of federal debt was being retired.

Note that literally in the cycle just prior to this becoming the trend, Clinton's OBM chief - who later went on to earn, no s**t, *$100M dollars* (use Dr Evil voice here) for overseeing the disaster that led directly to the 2008 financial crash - was all over the papers warning that the House GOP's (fairly modest, but real) deficit reduction proposals would cause a near collapse in services and governance.

Being the unserious dumbed-down country it is, the sudden appearance of surpluses mere months later - without any change in federal budgeting - did not lead to ridicule and political/career death for anyone echoing Franklin Raynes' idiocy.

Not in the setting of the price. People will only pay what they're willing to pay.

But figure this out for yourself. Make some metal art for $1,000 a throw. Take it out to the local flea market. Show all your expenses. Then watch everybody just walk on by.

If it costs YOU more to make an item than the going rate - you'll just go bankrupt and not sell a damn thing.

Not sure if IRAs can be targeted; they're supposed to be tax-protected. Look around. What do you see ? Long lead times for any durable good. More scarcity that you've ever seen. Along with higher prices.

Do you think, in any of the calculus regarding setting of price ... that any thought is being put into anything other than find that sweet spot of maximizing price ?

160 rhomboid: "Anonymous, during the 2nd disastrous Clinton term, the tech boom/bubble generated so much revenue that by a few measures the deficit about disappeared and in fact lots of federal debt was being retired."

I knew that there have been brief snapshots were the deficit curve inverted (if that's the term), but as to have been so transient to have been meaningless. And it was so promptly re-spent (or apportioned to be re-spent) as the anxious projection of spendthrifts (aka DC) hurriedly stated, "We're fine so let's go shopping some more," only to make the rate of new deficit spending even more onerous.

Like finding a silver dollar in one's pants and saying, "Let's go buy a new suit. I'm sure there'll be more fresh found money in my other pants tomorrow."

I just don't remember any tangible reprieve from government overspending. Only a brief respite (like you mentioned) where they recalculated a new rate of increased spending when an artificial, non-designed windfall fell into their laps.

200 "When corporations pay heavier taxes, who pays them, ultimately?"

some might be passed on to the consumer of course ... BUT there might be a "comparative advantage" to small biz, or to alternative products.

From my view, same with the tariffs on China ... they did not pass on the "tax", they absorbed it in their outrageous "comparative advantage" profit margins (their advantage being slave labor and having disposable workers, freedom to pollute infinitely, government theft of foreign tech ... all supported under the "Free Trade" Rubicon.

Taxes pose a disadvantage on some, but sometimes it is those who have been "cheating the system". But Biden is probably giving carve outs to any that pay the Big Guy his 10-20%.

Lol! I've sat in those rooms, and if you think that, then I've got a some beachfront Kansas property for you.

Taxes is just one part in the equation of course. And everything that comes into play for EBITDA, takes into account what that bottom line thing will be. If you are set up like Amazon to create perpetual losses on the tax sheet versus how much cash flow you can generate, yeah they have less impact. If you are an automaker like Ford or GM that EBITDA number needs to be so big to generate the eventual bottom line number. If the bottom line number is significantly impacted by the tax bill, then EBITDA needs to go higher - and there are many ways that happens, including price increases.

Heavy off road mfg.

Never had a margin that big. And the auto's most certainly do not. Yes, their supply lines and materials are an issue. Personnel becoming less so, more talk than reality at the moment except for very specific positions.

And the tax number is always in play. Always. The top finance guys are factoring it into their budget requirements - it's just another input. If it goes too high, it must be countered. If I can't get price, or choose not to get it - and right now anyone can get price - I have to get it somewhere else.
And if you think they aren't watching the eventual tax rate because other things are more pressing, you have some very unusual finance guys.

Street price isn't even being determined by MSRP now, for new trucks. Dealers are selling above MSRP.

I don't know what to tell you. It's your paradigm - you won't change it. Modern economics, in the last couple years - simply do not work the way you wish they did.

Posted by: Just The Way It Is at March 09, 2023 06:27 PM (/P0vp)

218 No - you are just locked into a paradigm. The finance guys have a formula - if you choose to believe taxes are absent from it - that is fine.

Posted by: Black JEM at March 09, 2023 06:31 PM (dUndZ)

219 Ford is literally - literally - stacking unfinished trucks around any open piece of ground they can grab here. You telling me they're doing this - because of really sharp finance guys, all with their calculators working, factoring in contemporary tax rates into the decision to keep pumping those trucks out ?

I used to think this was a Boomer attitude - the faith that folks in the know, experts, were making the big decisions. But it's not exclusive to the Boomers. It's just a general faith, when confronted with all this madness, that somebody somewhere smart surely has this all under control.

They don't. Tax policy has nothing to do with it, either.

Posted by: Just The Way It Is at March 09, 2023 06:35 PM (/P0vp)

220 Oh - and yes dealers are - and manufacturers are looking for ways to eliminate dealers, just in case you didn't notice. Very interesting things going on at the big 2 with their dealer networks - I don't know anyone in Chrysler/Fiat - but I imagine its the same.

Don't mistake current retail price capture for an indifference to tax costs. Those concerns are always there.

Posted by: Black JEM at March 09, 2023 06:43 PM (dUndZ)

221 No - you choose to willingly ignore what I am saying. And I have a very close personal acquaintance in the Ford system. The restrictions and limits they are placing on these trucks is ... interesting. And varies from dealer to dealer.

And regardless, none of this has anything to do with what Ford finance execs think about taxes. I did at one point actually have an acquaintance in GM's Treasury office in NY - long since past. They knew everything about every tax policy. The joke in the auto industry was they were GM's best performing unit. And I think they were right. We can quibble over how much tax policy impacts price. But to suggest that it has no impact is just ignoring reality. They know it, and watch it. If it gets too interesting, they pay alot more attention to it. And trust me, they are paying attention to 28%.

Posted by: Black JEM at March 09, 2023 06:48 PM (dUndZ)

222 And if you think they aren't watching the eventual tax rate because other things are more pressing, you have some very unusual finance guys.
Posted by: Black JEM at March 09, 2023 06:15 PM (dUndZ)

Increased taxation impinges free cash flow unless EBITDA can be increased thru cost reductions or price increases - and declining free cash flow in turn impinges DSCR and capital expansion plans. So the idea of increased taxation matters in finance, a lot.
