NYC Mayor Eric Adams: Say, Maybe Stores Should Require People to Take Off Their Masks Before Enterring. Criminals Seem to Be Using the Masks for Criminal Purposes.

Really? You don't say?

Not long ago, New Yorkers were required to wear a face mask if they wanted to enter a store.

In fact, it was last October that Adams demanded people wear masks in stores. Just five months ago.

adamsmaskup.jpg

But Mayor Eric Adams has now said the city's shopkeepers should adopt the opposite approach: People who refuse to pull down their mask when they first come into a store should be barred, in case they plan to rob the place.

"We are putting out a clear call to all of our shops, do not allow people to enter the store without taking off their face mask," the mayor said in a radio interview on 1010 WINS on Monday. "And then once they're inside, they can continue to wear it if they so desire to do so."

The mayor made the suggestion, which an aide to Mr. Adams said is not a legal requirement or even a new idea, at a time when crime appears to be declining. The city has seen reduced rates of crime across most categories, from murder to petit larceny, for the first two months of 2023 compared with the same period last year, Police Department data shows.

The New York Times has two agendas: Keep people masked forever, and pretend that crime is not a problem. So they now pretend that two months of declining crime stats is enough to say the crime wave is over, they pretend that people aren't simply reporting crime less frequently because they know cops often don't even bother making reports any longer, and they pretend that crime rates do not remain hugely elevated above the pre-BLM Riots level.

But theft has been a harder problem to address, and concerns over robberies and shoplifting persist. The problem was underscored over the weekend by the shooting death of a 67-year-old deli employee in Manhattan, who was killed on Friday night by a robber wearing a dark face mask and a white, full-body Tyvek suit.

The mayor referred to that killing in a second news media appearance on Monday.
"Let's be clear, some of these characters going into stores that are wearing their mask, they're not doing it because they're afraid of the pandemic, they're doing it because they're afraid of the police," the mayor said in a television interview with PIX 11. "We need to stop allowing them to exploit the safety of the pandemic by wearing masks, committing crimes."

Let's get back to pretending crime isn't a problem, huh?

Despite the wide-ranging recent decline in crime [over two months!], the number of robberies fell by only 2 percent, city data shows. And the number of petit larcenies -- the theft of items whose value is low, such as those typically taken in a shoplifting -- increased by about 5 percent compared with the same period last year.

Requiring shoppers to briefly drop their face masks would allow security cameras to get a clear view of a shopper's face, the mayor said. And if a shopper refused to comply, Mr. Adams said store employees would know to keep an eye on them because "if someone is violating the basic rules, they may be there to violate a substantial rule as to commit a crime."

...

Chief Maddrey said New Yorkers should think of dropping their masks as "a peace offering" and "a sign of safety for store workers."

"When we walk in, we should take down our masks," the chief said. "We should let them know that they're not in any danger, any harm, that we're customers, we're here to help them."

So New York City is obviously now very serious about making crime not pay.

Right?

Right?!

NYC will pay 300 Black Lives Matter protesters $21,500 EACH after they were wrongly kettled, zip-tied and hit with batons and pepper-spray during 2020 Bronx demonstration in riot-hit city days after George Floyd's murder

Protesters took to the streets following the police-involved killing in Minneapolis

Officers wielding batons restrained hundreds for violating a citywide curfew

If the settlement is approved, it would be one of the highest ever awarded per person in a class action case for mass arrests

By Melissa Koenig For Dailymail.Com

New York City has agreed to pay more than 300 Black Lives Matter protesters $21,500 each after they were zip-tied, hit with batons and pepper-sprayed during a 2020 demonstration.

"Demonstration."

The protesters took to the streets on June 4, 2020, to protest the police-involved murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis 10 days earlier, when they say members of the New York Police Department boxed them in and prevented them from leaving in a practice known as 'kettling.'

Officers wielding batons then swung at the protesters and hit them with pepper spray, before restraining hundreds of the demonstrators with plastic zip ties for violating a citywide curfew.

Oh wait I thought they were wrongly arrested, now I find out they were violating a curfew.

If a judge approves the settlement filed in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday, the New York Times reports, it would be one of the highest ever awarded per person in a class action case for mass arrests.

In total, the city could spend between $4million to $6million on the settlement.

And why was there a curfew in the first place?

...

But the kettling strategy was broadly defended at the time by Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, who said it was needed because the protesters were defying curfews set after looters ransacked parts of Manhattan.

Shea also claimed the Bronx protest was organized by 'outside agitators,' and de Blasio said, 'There was a specific pre-announced threat of violence, and then people appeared at the protest with weapons and gasoline.

Did I mention that some crime stats had declined for a whole two months in a row -- in a row! -- and that has nothing at all to do with citizens simply no longer calling the police for most crimes because they know crime has been decriminalized?

32 I know people who have sued the NYPD over minor shit (that the people were most likely guilty of) and that amount is basically the city's easy settle number.

The lawyers know they can get that amount just by filling a lawsuit, and the city will 100% agree to it without a fight. So some race hoax ambulance chancer gathered up 300 people (bet half weren't even there) and knew he'd easily pocket $3 mil by taking his 50% cut. Beats having to gather up these criminals who scream abuse, on a case by case basis.

So, to clarify here.
1. "Demonstrators" were looting in parts of the city and the risks of organized violence were elevated
2. In response to the looting, the city imposed a curfew.
3. "Demonstrators" violated the new curfews and were restrained or arrested as a result
4. The city will now pay the restrained/arrested "demonstrated" more than $20k each

I've lost the plot somewhere.

The reason is nobody reports that stuff hardly. Dead bodies, well those stats are different. In the suburbs people still have an expectation at least, that crimes will be investigated.

You see this all the time on websites that aggregate crime data. Punch in a safe, suburban ZIP code and an inner-city ghetto ZIP code and you'll usually find that the suburb has a higher crime rate, especially property crime and sexual assault. This is the reason. In the ghetto, people don't usually bother to report because nothing comes of it, because they fear reprisals, etc.

In the 'burbs, though, people *do* report crimes. There, they either expect the cops to do something about it or they must file a police report for insurance reasons. The crimes go reported instead of unreported, and the better areas often show a higher crime rate than the worse areas.

101 NYPD: Take off masks before entering stores This is quite a turnaround. I’m shocked to see this as I never thought I would.

Fuck that shit. I've managed to stay alive through this crap for three years, despite 3 hospitalizations, and three other trips to the ER. If I get covid, with my comorbidities, I’m dead. If I’m out of the house, and out of the car, I’m wearing a KN95. It’s not a balaclava, or a ski mask, or fucking panty hose. It’s a protective mask.

Can they put their masks back on as soon as they're in the store? If it's just a 10 second reveal, and customers can hold their breath, it will be safe. Like TSA making you drop your mask as you go through security.

Simply refuse to do business with any store that bans masks With all the other options available it's a buyers market. Be sure to call the biz to complain and say bye bye.

So you can go in with a gun without anyone knowing your intent but that mask is just one step too far into the danger zone?

I had to look it up. Per USA Today (retch, but first hit in search) :
In a controversial practice known as “kettling,” police corralled protesters into a one-block area near a stretch of Interstate 87, where many were then beaten and struck with batons.

The practice, also known as “trap and detain,” has been criticized for contributing to heightened tensions and has since come under scrutiny by city and police department leaders nationwide.

So it sounds like they slowly compressed the "demonstration" into a one-block area, then sealed it as a containment mechanism before going in to make arrests.

The proposal announced Wednesday by the Los Angeles Police Protective League lists 28 kinds of 911 calls where other city agencies or nonprofit organizations would be sent first. The calls range from mental health situations, quality-of-life and homeless issues, problems at schools and welfare checks, to certain non-fatal traffic collisions, parking violations, trash dumping, loud parties, public intoxication and panhandling.

The league said officers would respond if the situation becomes violent or criminal in nature, but only after the initial call goes to another agency or an affiliated nonprofit.

Police Chief Michel Moore said he welcomed the union's push for “an alternative non-law enforcement service response to non-emergency calls.”

231 The thread is young, and DU's discussion on point, so a few more crazy tidbits:

I would never shop in a store that asked me to remove my mask. To be effective, masks have to be worn constantly if indoors or crowded outdoor areas, especially if others are unmasked. It takes me a while to get the seal just right over my nose and face with my 3M N95 Aura mask. I'm not going to have to do that over and over again and contaminate the mask.

It seems like the NYPD wants to force infect people. They are psychopaths to even suggest such a thing. Ironically, when a shoplifting event occurs in my town and they put videos up on the news, the robbers are almost never wearing masks. I remember 2 people robbed a liquor store down the street from my house, during the mask mandate, and these two fools weren't even wearing masks.

Same At The Pot Store The whole time CDC recommended masks it was that way. The first 6 months or so, it was curbside out back, and even in the car we had to pull the mask back. They still have curbside but I don't use it anymore.

248 Autonomous tech boom darling Embark goes belly-up, lays off hundreds

The aftermath of the pandemic-era tech boom has taken another San Francisco victim. Autonomous trucking software company Embark Trucks is laying off 230 workers and moving toward a total shutdown, the firm announced Friday, less than 16 months after it went public at a $5.2 billion valuation.

Embark aimed to take a slice of the huge commercial trucking industry by selling software that would integrate with trucks’ driving systems - taking a regular vehicle and making it self-driving. The firm planned to create a network of long-haul, autonomous trucks that would deliver freight between cities, whereupon human drivers would take over for local pickups and drop-offs.

I probably would have enjoyed All Quiet if done in a manner reminiscent of Tropic Thunder.

But if an unvaccinated person gets Covid, he will end up with better and safer immunity. (even if he can get Covid again). Forcing those that have natural immunity to get vaccinated should be a crime, and should be prosecuted.

Forcing masks or the (not a) vax on kids is also criminal abuse, imo.

It's a bad criticism from a writer unable to find reasons for his lack of appreciation of something. There are a host of rhetorical tics that critics use when they simply can't explain why they don't like something, and "it aged poorly" is top 3.

The other two would have to do about pacing and probably complaining about "it not making sense". Most of the time, it makes perfect sense, it's just characters behaving in ways that the critic wouldn't.

I have a very dear friend of longstanding the first page of whose Christmas card message was all about the various vaccinations of his entire family, their Covid test results, their fanatical masking regimens (including indoors at home), and, inevitably, that some of the family had caught Covid nonetheless.

The second page was about his family's activities, and the third page basically reiterated the first page. Apparently he'd forgotten that he'd already updated me on their Covid situation in the first page. Whoa.

Sometimes, that's all you need.

The purpose of criticism is twofold in my mind. From the critics perspective, it's just about having an ongoing conversation about the art. It's not to lord over anyone or tell anyone what to think. It's just a dialogue about art and what it means to us.

The other is from the reader's perspective. It's about finding the critic that you agree with or find interesting, and reading that critic to either help find things you know you'll like or simply to appreciate the writing itself.

Not a rape fan in any entertainment, but-

the first episode of "Goblin Slayer" really sets the table properly for the rest of the show.

It's like in a horror movie(which Goblin Slayer sort of is) or a murder mystery.

A good unexpected gory death really lays things out in a way that carries through the rest of the film. (see Scream)

Same way in GS. The unexpectedly miserable fate of the adventuring party sets the plate for the Goblin Slayer himself to mercilessly slay these vaguely goofy and seemingly weak critters.

YMMV.

452 Probably some kind of moron.

I'd eschew him, personally.

454 Jay, that friend sounds like a sad case. Similar but far less extreme examples have further lowered my assessment of many many people. Further. They mostly were already pretty misinformed, lazy quasi-citizens quite content to be part of the huge slow-moving river of stupidity that is America now - of course so long as the stupidity doesn't immediately, concretely, directly, negatively affect them (and they can understand that it does, which many can't even do).

______________

He's a smart guy, and a faculty member in the sciences. But he works in a field that involves risk assessment, and it shows. I'm not sure whether he chose that field because he was neurotic about health and safety, or whether working in that field made him neurotic about health and safety.

I hate driving with him, because he typically drives at about 35 mph on the freeway. I nervously watch in the rear view mirror as people come roaring up behind him before realizing he's barely moving, and then swerve violently to avoid hitting him. After a trip with him I need a stiff drink.

>>So, if cherry picking video is a problem.. fine... RELEASE IT ALL (the Kraken says)

Well the J6 committee themselves cherry picked the footage they wanted to use as propaganda.

They even selectively showed footage of Josh Hawley running down a hallway allegedly "fleeing the capital," the truth was rather than leading the way ala George Castanza, he was literally the reps to leave as they were being led away by security.

Paranoid neighbor across the street, masked, and maintaining distancing, 'I suppose we will look back on this, and tell our children about it, like the plague, or Spanish Flu.'

There were people out taking walks, holding either end of a six foot stick, to maintain 'distancing'. While walking my dog, I had a young guy, wearing a mask, jogging, shearing away across the street and calling out , 'Pets can have it too, you know!'

I think I will not ask this question. I am pretty sure they were quarantined in separate rooms if they couldn’t even talk to each other in the kitchen. We may draw our own conclusions here. 😂
