The New York Times will give it six paragraphs in the interior pages of its International section (which is already in interior pages).Two of the four Americans kidnapped in Mexico were found dead after they went missing last week, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said. The American citizens had crossed into Matamoros, south of Brownsville, Texas, in a white minivan with North Carolina plates. Shortly after entering Mexico, unidentified gunmen shot at the passengers of the vehicle and took them into another car, fleeing the scene. The two other citizens were found alive, with one of them injured, Tamaulipas Gov. Americo Villarreal confirmed in a morning news conference with Obrador. The four Americans, Zindell Brown, Eric James Williams, and cousins Latavia "Tay" Washington McGee and Shaeed Woodard, drove down for a medical procedure for McGee but never made it.The White House issued a statement, declaring it "unacceptable" for Mexican drug terrorist gangs to kidnap and murder Americans.

We'd get our asses kicked. We wouldn't employ the necessarily savage ROE to get it done. Civilian casualties would be horrific. I doubt we have good intelligence on the targets. Well... IMO its more important than the ..... what... 7 or 8 other places in the world we have the Army deployed in combat ops? And definitely more important than Ukraine's border.

Medical tourism is a thing. I would never do it but some people will do it. You can get drugs without an RX just walk into a pharmacy and pick it off the shelf and pay for it. So there are a non trivial number of border crossers who go there stock up and come back.

Yup. The border is such a problem that I think it needs a huge effort at containment, and one that would likely cause an international incident but so be it.
1 mile of land along the entire border - all within American territory - needs to be annexed with eminent domain. Put a wall right along the border. Build a parallel wall one mile inside US territory. Essentially, build a pale. Then deploy land mines inside that narrow DMZ, along with seismographs to detect tunneling, etc. The only pass-throughs are at formal border crossings. Inspect everything coming through.
It's that or war with Mexico, as near as I can come up with.

Yes, but that's not important right now. We can't even roll up the cartel operators within our own borders, so how do we (effectively) defeat them on their own turf? By effectively, I mean clear victory, not a mess like the last half-dozen wars we chose. The cartels are thoroughly entrenched in the Mexican govt at all levels. You'd have to scorch-earth entire Mexican states.

Exports would hurt us a lot, too, and put the USMCA at risk, which will embolden Red China since they're the primary damaged party by USMCA.
Not that it should be put out of consideration - *nothing* should be out of consideration - but I would much rather see the remittance tap turned off. My preferred method would be a tax. Any cross-border transfer between the US and any Latin American country that is not in excess of $25,000 is taxed at 75%. The tax goes directly to border wall construction. The big transfers needed by business operations are exempted.

Mexico City has some fine doctors and nurses. Really, not bad at all, even by American standards. Facilities are lacking though.
Border towns? Not a chance I'd go there for a procedure. But a *lot* of people go there for the pharmacies. If you live near the border you can get your prescriptions for basically nothing.

It is a massive future risk, yes. But it is also a tremendous opportunity. It all hinges on whether Mexico can remain a functional country with a functional government. There's a reason so much of the industrial development is not right next to the border. A lot of it is, but there's plenty that's further afield because it's easier to run things there. The cartels more or or less own border regions at this point. A failure of Mexico will be a significant risk to industrial chains in this hemisphere.

I know. I exaggerate. Somewhat. But remittances and oil exports are probably north of 10% of Mexican GDP. And given that most of the rest is stolen by the authorities and the gangsters, the average Mexican jagoff is very dependent on the remittances.
The US can instantly ruin the social order of Mexico (such as it exists) at any time it desires. It just doesn't desire to.

In the 90s my employer had a maquiadora plant in Matamoros, employing 2500 people mostly women. The plant was in an industrial park on the edge of the city, and the neighboring plants were mostly making shit for Detroit, steering wheels, radios, inside specialties. Maybe fifteen large plants in all.

It depends on where you are in the industrial chain. Mexico does fairly high-value work, and high-value work is expensive. Mexican factory works aren't painting cheap plastic toys, they're building cars and machinery and electronics. And in some of those high-value spaces, Mexicans (who are competent but comparatively inexperienced) can be cheaper than Chinese.

I'd rent a car at the Harlingen airport and make sure it could be driven into Mexico, and go in mornings and out after work. Sometimes I'd go into Matamoros at night with our local guy, white guy from Purdue, who was totally fluent and had married a wealthy Mexican princess whose family owned big businesses down in Monterrey.
It was safe then, as long as you stayed in the markets and restaurants in the downtown, near the international bridge. I took an engineer that worked for me once, guy from Vietnam, had been in a communist prison camp as a little kid after the VC took over, Matamoros's outer ring of mean streets and 3rd world poverty looked familiar to him, so we wandered out a little. Never out of the city though. You could get disappeared by the thugs.

The TJ maquiladora has a fair amount of higher-end manufacturing and assembly, electronics, medical tech. And the "security situation" is much better than in many other border towns, probably the best in fact of the major places. Lots of factors go into that.

Airline friends who've really exploited their company's Mexican itineraries over the years say Mazatlan, one of their old favorites, is gone. Airline discontinued overnights, then flights altogether (I think that's right).

Yes, Mexicans are probably the majority of total illegals to have ever snuck into the US, but for at least the last 20 years, far more Central Americans have been crossing the border. Now, add in all of the Chinese, Caribbean, and Africans coming across through Mexico over the past two years.

I though of that, but I'm not so sure. Why kidnap? Gun them down, mail their heads to their people, let them know they're next unless the tab is paid. That's more the cartel way of handling bad deals.
But kidnap is a pretty good sector for them too. Just not usually Americans.

This is correct. The biggest problem is that they're also embeded deep within our cities as well. The violence of actually taking on the Cartels would be astronomical and they wouldn't just target police or government they'd target critical infrastructure like water, power, sewer and so on. It'd be absolutely crazy.

TBH I don't think it matters anymore. Just like cameras don't make a shit bit of difference. Every one of these lowlifes are operating out in the open, since nobody is going to do anything about it. So running after some Americans with a running chainsaw on the calle would probably attract no attention, other than people closing their doors and windows.

No last year about 40% of the border patrol contacts were with Mexican nationals. The remaining were split among other Central American countries and others.
The original point of my comment was if Mexico was turning into an industrial center why so many illegal Mexican nationals coming here to look for work .

This is a generalization, but if you look at Mexico and Central America the way the Spanish did, as one big territory and not multiple nations, the people that live from Mexico City and north are industrialized and trainable. Those that live south of there are uneducated and rural, and much more interchangeable than nationality would suggest.

I'm thinking that this is a consortium of families (not necessarily cartels) that have all agreed on territories for distribution purposes. And I don't think this is all about drugs. Human trafficking has become a huge business nowadays.
