Sometimes I'm tempted by some of these spots on TV for gadget products. The Angel View rear view mirror for your car, which supposedly gives you 160 degrees of rear view, might be a good thing. But then how would I pull down the visors, and fit my sunshade around it?

Phones are basically good enough. You can keep using them until they break, and then buy a new one. And there's not much difference between a midrange phone and a flagship model, posted by Pixy.

Ditto plus reading and knowing all the seminal relational database papers beginning with Codd. Jim Grey even gave us his smoking hairy goofball lecture one day. For extra credit we had to build from scratch an Oberon complier. It was a lot of fun and that I survived is a miracle. Posted by: Lost In Space at March 06, 2023 04:46 AM (fRyOf) 14
Got a Motorola Moto from Amazon on their black Friday sale for 99 dollars. Normally about 149 or so.
Probably cheaper phones around, but the camera is good, and easy setup. My nephew just got a new I phone for 600, but he is a Apple fan I guess. Not sure what his phone does to make it so expensive, but to each his own. Posted by: Colin at March 06, 2023 04:50 AM (yyCX3) 15

The bombshell emails released by House Republicans on Sunday shows that Fauci commissioned and edited a paper entitled The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2 before he cited it as evidence that COVID did not originate from a lab in Wuhan.
It was written just four days after Fauci, and his NIH boss Francis Collins, held a call with the authors to discuss reports that COVID may have been leaked from a genetic testing lab in Wuhan and 'may have been intentionally genetically manipulated.' And in the emails, Dr. Kristian Andersen admits that Fauci 'prompted' him to write the paper with the goal of 'disproving' the lab leak theory. I can appreciate the database lesson, it’s always nice to have an idea of what’s going on under the hood. Especially now that entity based data access is taking over. And you can do all your standard data base routines without knowing a bit of SQL (until you need more then the most basic functionality)
To put it another way: you can tell the difference between a coder who learned C C and C++, one who started in Java/C#, one who started late in the Java/C# game and relies heavily on package managers, and one who graduated in the last 3 years and knows what those 67 pronouns mean but can’t code their way out of a paper bag. New Zealand has recorded the largest increase in the number of registered deaths since the 1918 influenza pandemic, new data from Stats NZ shows.
The births and deaths figures, for the year ending December 2022, show there were 38,574 deaths in 2022, 10.4 per cent (3642) more than in 2021. This increase – attributed to Covid-19 and an ageing population – is the biggest year-on-year jump since the 55.4 per cent (5835) spike in deaths following the 1918 flu pandemic. Churchill was urging Monty to study logistics, which Monty didn't particularly want to do, so he rather fatuously replied, "Well, familiarity breeds contempt, you know." Some people were surprised to see how Twitter was controlling the narrative. It took a altruistic act by the world's richest man to bring this to light and try to return it to some level of balance.
I hope someday people are surprised by how much the search engines in common use are also tweaked to support a similar narrative. I would think there's a solid base of people who would financially support a neutralized search engine that returned web search value to the level of the late 90's. Everyone has one that's good enough for them, and even if smartphone sellers have figured out how to hide the cost of the phone in a cell plan, that doesn't help the manufacturers.
