THE MORNING RANT: The Racial Poison of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is Tearing Us Apart; Texas Public Universities on Defense About Their DEI Practices

Race relations have suffered in the past decade, with agitators in the media promoting racial strife, the Diversity-Equity-Inclusion agenda being promoted in virtually every institution, and left-wing politicians smearing those who oppose their agenda as being racists.

Look at this disturbing graph from Gallup. As recently as 2013, 72% of white adults rated black/white race relations as being either Very Good or Somewhat Good. That fell to 43% by 2021. For black adults, that figure dropped from 66% to 33% in the same 8-year span.

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

It was in late 2014 that the famous shooting of Michael Brown occurred in Ferguson, MO. Since then, there has been unrelenting, wall to wall media coverage of “racism in America.” Cities burned, employers embraced social justice in the workplace, and the joyous Texas holiday known as Juneteenth became a federal holiday, but it was rebranded as a racial struggle session of guilt and national shame.

What’s shown in this chart is not a surprise. What you see was always the intent. The institutional left has sought to racially balkanize this country, and they are having great success.

Texas A&M has historically been a more conservative and patriotic university than most colleges. Individual Aggies have always shared a passionate kinship and loyalty to their fellow Aggies, and the identity group they take pride in has nothing to do with skin color or ethnicity.

They’re identity is “Aggie.” Or was.

Things changed. Across all races, the percentage of students surveyed by the university who feel that they “belong” at A&M has collapsed.

That chart above is disturbing. In just a few short years A&M has managed to displace the pride that students of all races once felt in their school and replace it with alienation.

What happened? You know exactly what happened. Around 2010 Texas A&M made a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, bringing racial divisiveness to the campus, and replacing Aggie Pride with racial awareness and resentment.

At Texas A&M, a Different Kind of “Climate Change” - Efforts to make the campus more welcoming have alienated students

Diversity training for faculty search committees became a norm in 2014. Faculty Affairs concerned itself with weaving “diversity, inclusion and respect into the culture of the institution.” DEI events on campus crowded out alternatives. Hate-reporting systems were installed. All members of the campus community were taught to believe that, in the words of the 2010 report, diversity is “an indispensable component of academic excellence.” In other words, efforts to “improve the climate” at TAMU looked very much like they have everywhere else in the country.

Greg Abbott is now in his 3rd term as Governor of Texas. All the decline shown in that chart above has happened on his watch. Whatever weak protestations he has made about campus wokeness, he served two full terms without making any actual efforts to save Texas universities from being taken over by anti-American race-baiters promoting racial hatred in the name of DEI.

Somewhat related, The University of Texas and Texas A&M have been open and brazen about employing racial discrimination in hiring and admissions. (But you know, the good kind of discrimination that targets whites and Asians.)

With Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and several legislators announcing that they’d be introducing legislation to put a stop to DEI in hiring and admissions in this legislative session, Gov. Abbott finally took some action. He had a letter sent to all universities and state agencies last month advising them that discriminating by race in pursuit of DEI objectives is illegal and violates anti-discrimination laws.

Shortly thereafter Texas A&M announced that they were suspending their race-based hiring and admissions practices.

The Texas A&M University System is removing diversity, equity and inclusion statements from its employment and admission practices, according to an announcement by the system's chancellor.
“No university or agency in the A&M System will admit any student, nor hire any employee based on any factor other than merit,” Texas A&M System Chancellor John Sharp said in a news release Thursday.

I don’t believe the words spoken by A&M’s Chancellor, nor do I believe he has the backbone to actually enforce a prohibition on racial discrimination if he were to order it, but at least he realizes that DEI is no longer publicly defensible.

Not so at the University of Texas System, however, where they’re still trying to parse words to hide their intent to continue practicing illegal racial discrimination.

The A&M move comes about a week after University of Texas System board Chairman Kevin Eltife announced during a regents board meeting that the UT System was pausing all new DEI policies at all of its campuses, including UT-Austin. The UT System Board of Regents has also asked for a report on existing DEI policies at all institutions within the system.

Let me translate, “We are not going to expand our race-based protocols for now, but we will maintain our existing racial discrimination practices.”

Since we’re talking about Texas, and since today is the 187th anniversary of the day when the heroes of the Alamo gave their lives, how about a song to celebrate the beauty of Texas in March?

While Texas may be barely habitable in summer, in early spring the weather is delightful, and the explosion of wildflowers is a stunning natural wonder. A drive from Houston to Fredericksburg along Highway 290 in the month of March is like driving through a 250-mile long blooming garden.

I've lived next to the same black family for 23 years. We've become very close over the years and he was one of my best friends, right up to the point where he said to me and a mutual friend after a round of golf that he felt he wasn't free to say things because we didn't want to hear it. After all the things we'd done together, discussions we'd had and how close our families had become.

That's when I knew Owebama and the media destroyed racial relations in this country.

My entire life, race relations in this country improved. There were some notable problems and conflicts, but on-balance the racial environment improved throughout my life.

If you make getting a job easier or college less expensive if I check certain boxes or identify a certain way, I'll do it, it's only rational.
Taking away the incentives for that sort of thing would go a long way to solving the problems.

Last week CT College -- annual tuition around $80K -- was in chaos over the resignation of its DEI officer.
Students (mostly white) protested and demanded the resignation of the college's president. The protest was backed by some faculty, surprise, surprise.

The administration caved to students initial (faux) outrage and did nothing to prevent the take over of a campus building. So yes, maybe the president should resign and maybe they should let it all burn down.

Take, for instance, the concept of intersectionality. The idea is that if you have more than one grievance factor, they intersect, giving an additive grievance index. 83 I don't know if those numbers translate into real world situations though. I imagine that on college campus, there is definitely tension, and pysyns of caucasian feel like they're walking on eggs all the time. And that's bad.

But what happens when you get in the real world?

My job puts me in personal contact with a very diverse population, not just by race or ethnicity but by religion as well. I haven't felt any animosity or hostility from anyone.

There were times I felt hostility from AA people but that was decades ago like when me and my boyfriend were the only whites in the club, or at the show. But nobody acted against us even then.

But, his confidence in doing things conservatively and following his instincts is weak.

Colonialism is a double-aged sword, but it (and empire) would not happen without a reason. Areas that get colonized tend to be weak in resources, geography or people. They can't go it alone and so end up colonies or imperial possessions. The ruling power in place will change over time, but the places that get colonized and integrated or are ruled by the imperial capital are usually indefensible on their own terms. Successful colonial or imperial forces find it worth the cost to get those areas, but the only way to make it work is usually to build infrastructure and provide security (if you're looking to extract something, you need to move and secure it).

When the foreign power goes, so does the need that drove those developments.

Try a place that isn't Dublin or Limerick. Cork is lovely. Dingle is very nice, too (yes, it's actually called that). As long as you don't bring up the English, things are usually fine (though there are some Irishmen who hate the English so intensely that they will make *any* topic be about the English).

I was there in 2016, before the election, and only one person brought up politics to me. I dunno if that's because of where I was (not Dublin or Limerick) or what, but I enjoyed myself in general.

My brother and our uncle lived next to an Irish guy for years. Really fun dude that loved his booze. He ended up moving back to Ireland because he couldn't get a job here and they would pay him to exist back home. He ended up being hospitalized and later passed due to his alcoholism.

It's now overgrown, not park-like, and a police shooting range still sits in a small area of the property. Some area residents hope food markets & other needed services can be built in the area. But the "activists" plead they don't want more silt to runoff into the area's creek, and they also just love to see the wildlife, especially that flying overhead. The mayor(s) promise 300 acres of the area shall be preserved & there will be weekly inspections to ensure the integrity of the creek.

It won't matter for, someday, a portion of the property will likely be divided into 1+ acre sites building sites for wildly expensive housing & much of the other acreage placed into conservation.

And the hate grows.

I've never known when NO wasn't a shithole, and I worked there off and on for decades. The French Quarter has always smelled like vomit. The summer before Katrina the wife and I took the kids in the van on a vacation through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas so they could see the sights. One of the sights I included in the visit was a trip through the non-touristy parts of New Orleans so they could see how people lived. Broken glass on tops of the walls around their homes. Streets full of people just being idle, doing nothing at all. Believe it or not, Katrina cleaned it up to some extent.

Those location statistics don't mean anything. You have to control for smoking, diet, medical screenings, etc., which are widely disparate by location.
