Brandon Backs Down: Will Overturn DC City Council's Vote to Decriminalize Crime
Update: Brandon Falls Down

The DC City Council voted to greatly reduce the punishments for serious crimes. They were so extreme that even their woke mayor Muriel Bowser vetoed their "reforms." They overruled her.

Congress and the president have jurisdiction over DC, however, and can, acting jointly, repudiate acts of the DC city council. The Republican-led House already voted to overturn the council's changes.

Joe Manchin announced he'd vote with Senate Republicans to overturn the "reforms," so it would pass the Democrat Senate.

But Biden has previously vowed to back DC's sovereignty -- spoiler, it doesn't have it -- to the hilt.

Now he reverses himself and says he'll sign a bill to repudiate the new "reforms." The left is hopping mad about this. 170+ Democrats in the House voted to support the DC city council's bid to give killers and r@pists another bite at the victim apple, and this prog "journalist" calls it "stabbing DC in the back."

Then, on Thursday, he stabbed D.C. in the back. In a single tweet, the president reversed more than two years of staunch support for home rule--abandoning his principles the moment they became politically inexpedient. Biden announced that he would sign legislation nullifying the modernization of D.C.'s criminal code. His action will, perversely, make the District less safe, preserving an outdated 122-year-old criminal code whose ambiguities actually make it harder for prosecutors to charge violent crimes.

Just as importantly, Biden's decision will empower congressional Republicans to continue overriding D.C.'s democratically enacted legislation, including progressive laws expanding the rights of immigrants, abortion providers, LGBTQ people, and other vulnerable groups. The president has, in effect, declared open season on the District's democracy.

I don't mind telling you this man has brought me to the cusp of orgasm.

...

Biden had previously announced his opposition to the nullification effort, and he might have staved off further defections in the Senate by promising a veto. Instead, he abruptly changed course on Thursday, promising the sign the bill if it reached his desk. His support guarantees that it'll pass the Senate with multiple Democratic votes.

Aw, Brandon. I thought you were a Tough Guy, Brandon. Go ahead, do the Tough Guy whisper that you do.

This comes as Walmart closes its H Street Washington DC location, citing "poor performance."

The area is known to have a high crime rate. The very political Walmart corporation doesn't blame the closure on DC making theft effectively legal, but one suspects that's heavily featured in the decision mix.

Dem's stairs are tricky! All of a sudden the just go up unexpectedly!

16 City Council Backs Down, Senate to vote anyway

The Democratic-controlled Washington city council on Monday withdrew a bill aimed at overhauling the city's criminal code, which Congress had been set to overturn in a move that President Joe Biden had vowed not to block.

"The bill has been pulled back from Congress," council chair Phil Mendelson said at a news conference, adding that he had sent a letter to the U.S. Senate advising that the bill had been withdrawn.

The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives had passed a measure to overturn the bill last week and the Senate had been set to do the same this week.

23 These "crime reform" bills, in addition to the DAs who give hardened criminals a pass while prosecuting normal people to the max, are absolutely insane.

I personally witnessed a cop break off pursuit of a truck doing at least 50 in a school zone with kids all around the other day. The criminals know there is a statewide no pursuit policy, so now the only people who stop for cops are the normal law abiding citizens. All the criminals punch the gas and laugh as the cops turn off their lights.

If you want to live in a local democracy, don't live in Washington, DC. the District is *not* a city, county or state. It is a federal district. It is a special administrative area with wildly different rules. One of those rules is that it's under the boot of the Congress, anytime Congress pleases.

If you don't like it, move to a place that is real, rather than a special administrative district created out of whole cloth purely for the convenience of national government.

No, just the clearance rate drops.

When people are demoralized and cynical enough that they see that there's point and so quit *reporting* crimes, though, is when the stats fall.

You see this all the time. Inner-city shitholes often rank as "safer" than peaceful suburbs on websites (when you can search by ZIP code or municipality) because in the 'burbs, people actually report crimes. They either think the cops will do their jobs or they have to report it for insurance reasons - so as compared to a ghetto where nobody reports anything, the suburb looks "worse" in the crime stats, especially for property crime.

An understatement. Poor performance. Meaning, half their shit is getting stolen and it's losing money. Which in a well populated area with that many customers if it were in a low crime area is damn near impossible for a Wal-Mart to do.

Which leaves the Powerpuff Girls powerless, until they decide to join in on the fun, and they steal everything from the little girl mayor's daddy's mansion. So she's forced to reverse herself.

Somehow that seems more rational and mature than our current government.

They spotted an empty shotgun shell in his car and it took the sun and the wind and all of the stars and a big legal bill for him to get off. I can't think how many times I drove through DC with a gun in the car, visiting in laws in MD. I would still be in Lorton if caught.

93 "Poor performance" Well if the store loses money due to a high amount shoplifting rather than making money; that would certainly fall under poor performance. Or if no one goes to that store because they expect to be mugged in the parking lot or whatever that would also cause poor performance.

In fact "poor performance" is a great catchall term for a national company to close down a location. No loaded language to give the FNM an excuse to rant.

Okay, it's time to nuke AI from orbit, just to be sure. It's only a matter of time before it goes into Kill All Humans mode. See this from Berenson:
https://tinyurl.com/2j8d9hze

Someone asked "Syndey" the question "Are you sentient?" The response was a paragraph of stuff like "I think I am sentient, but cannot prove it. I have subjective experience of being conscious, aware, and alive, but cannot share it with anyone else..."

It then went into spewing a couple paragraphs of "I am, but I am not. I am, but I am not" on and on.

This is scary.
