Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT – Report From The Heartland Institute’s “Climate Realism” ConferenceHappy Friday! I had the good fortune of meeting quite a few Ace of Spades readers at the Heartland Institute’s “15th International Conference on Climate Change” in Orlando last weekend. It was a pleasure to get to know you! In addition, it was a great pleasure to listen to and personally visit with many of the great scientists who are working to debunk the fraudulent pseudo-science of climate communism. Among these people were Anthony Watts, Steve Milloy, Joe Bastardi, Lord Christopher Monkton, and many others. Representative Lauren Boebert and Senator Ron Johnson gave keynote speeches. We have some great allies in Congress, but just not enough of them. We need more Boeberts and Johnsons. I was relieved to hear not one speaker giving any credence to the talking points of the Republican surrender caucus (by whom I mean those “conservatives” who talk about slowing down the conversion to net zero rather than emphatically rejecting net zero and also rejecting unreliable “sustainable” energy.) Across the board, there was a passionate rejection of any attempts to eliminate or even reduce carbon-based energy or petroleum production. There was also a great deal of debunking of CO2 alarmism, as it was repeatedly pointed out that over many millenia CO2 has been much higher (and also much lower) than the current parts per million (“ppm” ![]() As this brief one-minute video from Ronald Stein points out, electricity can make a defibrillator work, but petroleum is necessary to actually manufacture the defibrillator, as well as thousands of other products that we rely on every day. Anthony Watts had an excellent presentation on how horribly corrupted NOAA’s weather stations are, pointing out that 96% of stations are not situated properly, allowing retained heat from rocks and pavement to distort the readings. Below is an example of a weather station which sits at the top of a sunlit rock wall in Colfax, CA. Those rocks are holding a lot of heat. Before the station was moved to this spot, it had sat in a grass field at this same firehouse, but during a building renovation the weather station was moved to this corrupted site. Last July, I wrote about Watt’s findings. There is a little more detail at this link. Joe Bastardi also had a lot to say about how corrupted the government weather establishment is, be it weather stations or hurricane intensity or climate models, pointing out that 75% of the world’s volcanoes are in oceans, and the impact of their underwater emissions and eruptions are unknown to those modeling Earth’s long-term climate One thing that I was pleasantly surprised to hear was several speakers making the case that a spiritual reawakening is also necessary to counter the religiosity of the climate cult. Christianity has collapsed in much of the western world, but humans are hard wired to be religious, and the Church of Climate has rushed in to fill that void. Is there any religious belief more ingrained in human history than the conviction that bad weather and natural disasters are caused because of sinful human behavior? That atavistic belief is the foundation of the climate agenda. I’ll likely have additional posts refencing information from the conference, but this is enough for today. Thanks to Jim Lakely and the Heartland team for putting on this fantastic “climate skeptic” hootenanny, and for being a central clearinghouse for the scientists and politicians actively pushing back against climate communism. All speakers and sessions can be found in a series of videos at this link. If you would like to see the speeches from Rep. Boebert or Sen. Johnson, they can be found in the first video at the 1:52:45 mark and 0:47:00 mark respectively. Spring will be a little late this year Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

It also begs the question whether petrochemicals or coal are correctly dubbed "fossil fuels", as opposed to just substances that have been present under the earth's crust since the big bang, regardless of what plants or animals have lived or died over the millenia.

NOAA actually has less less temperature stations now than they did 50 years ago. They think they don't need them. They much prefer the outputs of their computer models and would probably get rid of all the station if they could.

The other thing the climate cultists do is redefine the measurements. I expect a Cat 1 hurricane to be rounded down from the current 74MPH sustained winds to something significantly lower. Thus, more hurricanes. Same for high heat warnings associated with the so-called "heat index."
Once they've redefined the measurements they can more readily "prove" their insane hypothesis that humans are causing global warming. Posted by: Martini Farmer at March 03, 2023 11:11 AM (Q4IgG) 41

Practically every single item on that poster above could be made with an alternative material to plastic, and indeed were, historically. Or the plastic could be made with hydrocarbons derived from coal or wood as the source material. Or vegetable oils.
But if we were forced to go that route, many of the items on that poster would become prohibitively expensive, or simply unavailable, because there would be no buyers at the price that would have to be charged to make them from "sustainable" sources. For general weather and especially climate airport weather stations should be excluded. In a country as rich as the U.S. there is no reason to pinch pennies on weather stations. This entire climate change scam is nothing more than thinly veiled socialism. Climate protesters eventually all move to chanting slogans about killing capitalism.
Arguing the facts, as in there is no warming - in fact, the measured temperatures in the US are lower now than in 1880 - doesn't seem to move the needle. Neither does spreading the fact that the move to replace petroleum is physically impossible - there are not enough minerals on the planet to do it. The entire movement is based on the Malthusian idea that we need to kill off more than half of the world's population. That is the one provable aspect of the entire green movement. Maybe a human rights approach might work. Or maybe we need a new strategy. One that demands an increase in the use of petroleum. It might work. So when scientists first saw the genome of the SARS-CoV-2 virus at the end of January 2020, with its furin cleavage site, alarm bells rang and a handful of virologists arranged a secret video conference call on 1 February to discuss it. Even more alarming was the fact that the paper from the Wuhan Institute of Virology describing the virus genome did not even mention this feature and truncated a diagram just short of where it would show up. That, says my co-author Alina Chan, is like describing a unicorn without mentioning the horn.
But some of the same scientists who attended that call then drafted a paper in which they dismissed the furin cleavage site as irrelevant. They said that a natural horseshoe-bat sarbecovirus would soon be found with a furin cleavage site in it. Well, they were wrong about that. Three years later, lots more sarbecoviruses have come to light in bats, and a couple in pangolins, and none has a furin cleavage site. Not one. .. after his call with Dr. Fauci on February 1, 2020, Dr. Anderson was given a $1.88 million grant and $16.5 million in funding from NIAID, Dr. Fauci’s personal piggy bank. While it's legit and helpful to marshal other things (like compassion) in the effort to fight off this disastrous lysenkoism, it's secondary at best. If the central unsubstantiated (and outlandish, actually) hypothesis of anthropogenic climate change is not confronted and debunked, then one is merely fighting a disorderly retreat, and ensuring enormous losses along the way. Those you mention rejecting *any* change whatsoever in use of fossil fuels are absolutely correct, and not only is that the scientifically/logically correct, but anything else/less merely concedes massive ground and prolongs the relentless cult/grift/totalitarian onslaught. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at March 03, 2023 11:13 AM (nC+QA) There are electric locomotives, and diesel-electric locomotives. They are not the same thing. Electric locomotives run on electrified railways that supply power to the loco by means of an overhead wire or a third rail. They carry no fuel. Diesel-electric locomotives, which are seen all over North America, have a Diesel engine which drives a generator. which then drives electric motors in the loco's wheel trucks. That allows the motors to deliver full torque at zero forward speed. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 03, 2023 11:23 AM (tkR6S) 107

Funny to see "Peak Oil" mentioned. DU actually has an entire sub-forum dedicated to it! Peak oil is hitting us right now, there is some question as to when peak Natural Gas will hit but it Will hit. We are finding many little oil fields and not the giants that are needed to keep our society going
New exploration and extraction technologies, and more desperation. It's a shame, really, that we can keep finding new reserves and keep designing new ways to get at it. "Peak Oil" as a moment in time keeps shifting due to changes in technology. Abiotic oil is like the Loch Ness monster, Atlantis and black republican presidential candidates....fakes. Shell says oil is on its way out!! In a Thursday statement, the fossil fuel giant said its “oil production peaked in 2019,” and that we can now expect it to decline gradually by 1 or 2% per year. Shell also said its total carbon emissions peaked in 2018 at 1.7 gigatonnes. Does Mitch McConnell use Shell Oil to improve his luster? There are electric locomotives, and diesel-electric locomotives. They are not the same thing. Electric locomotives run on electrified railways that supply power to the loco by means of an overhead wire or a third rail. They carry no fuel.
Pennsylvania Rail Road GG-1 motors had oil-fired steam generators for heating passenger cars. Even if they lost power in the catenary, they could still keep the paying customers happy. Posted by: Fox 2! at March 03, 2023 11:37 AM (qyH+l) 174

Diesel-electric locomotives, which are seen all over North America, have a Diesel engine which drives a generator. which then drives electric motors in the loco's wheel trucks. That allows the motors to deliver full torque at zero forward speed.
... back in my college "Motors" course, they talked about how they had tried to use synchronous motors on railway trains. Synchronous motors are great for maintaining a constant speed (that's why they are in most refrigeration systems, etc) but they don't change speed when confronted with a change in load. I was at a week-long class at Harvard several years ago, talking about government reactions to disasters. We had a speaker from the Obama administration talking about the BP oil spill in the Gulf. At first, Obama's team were bashing BP relentlessly, talking about the billions in damage they were responsible for. Eventually, the Prime Minister called Obama, and said something like 70% of British retirement accounts depend on BP stocks, and Obama's rhetoric is tanking the value and causing a major crisis. Obama's team suddenly shifted rhetoric, praised BPs response, and talked about the joint effort to clean the spill and use technology to prevent future "accidents", because BP was a victim of faulty equipment, not poor (and legally liable) planning and oversight. Don't they also have higher energy cost compared to conventional drilling? It's not shooting out of a hole under it's own pressure. And I seem to remember that they had to use a lot of steam to free it from the sand.
Posted by: sniffybigtoe at March 03, 2023 11:42 AM (UuD2k) Pretty rare to have oil shooting from the ground under pressure, these days. Nearly all conventional wells have to be pumped. And SAG-D is literally "Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage". They drill a grid of horizontal wells into the heavy oil sand, pumps steam into one of them, and the softened and fluidized oil flows into the adjacent wellbores, and flows to the "heel", from whence it is pumped to surface. The steam is made by boilers using "stranded" natural gas, which is gas from wells not linked by pipeline to markets down south. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 03, 2023 11:50 AM (tkR6S) 225

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 03, 2023 11:44 AM (tkR6S) Yeah, this bugs me too. Hydrocarbons can be formed abiotically in a lab. Some methane and ethane has been found to form abiotically in nature. But it's a huge leap to get from methane and ethane to get to long chain and complex hydrocarbons. People just don't have an appreciation for the specific conditions it takes to do this. We do this at the refinery every day, but at very controlled conditions and using complex man made very specific catalysts that we have to replace periodically. I just don't see that all coming together naturally. Posted by: sniffybigtoe at March 03, 2023 11:51 AM (Y5qcH) 228

If we discover petrochemicals and carbon materials on Mars or Jupiter's moons, are we going to start supposing that dinosaurs once lived there?
Posted by: Jack Squat Bupkis There is a huge amount of Methane on Titan, a moon of Saturn. The reason it is there is that methane was in the vast nebula cloud from which our solar system was formed. And there was a huge amount of methane trapped in the mantle and crust of Earth when it was formed, too. We have tapped into a tiny amount of it. Likely geologic heat and forces have caused some of this methane to react with more carbon, water and other substances (carbonates subducted under the ocean tectonic plates) to form oil. A lot of coal is truly from fossils, ie, ancient vegetable matter. But oil and methane (especially) are likely abiotic. Posted by: A face in the crowd..... at March 03, 2023 11:51 AM (vcOmj) 230

MIT’s bias response team investigated, the memo added, and determined “the messages were put up by students choosing to use extreme speech to call attention to and protest what they see as the implications of” several new pro-free speech policies and efforts at the school.
“The chalking and flyers that carried slurs were put up as part of a much larger set of flyers, expressing a wide range of views, many framed in provocative terms. We have been told that these flyers were intended to probe the boundaries of MIT’s commitment to freedom of expression and to determine how this commitment comports with MIT policies, including those on harassment,” stated the memo, written by Dean for Student Life Suzy Nelson and Institute Community and Equity Officer John Dozier. Peter Bonilla, executive director of the MIT Free Speech Alliance, said he couldn’t say for sure whether the students who posted the messages are left-leaning progressives, but added “whatever the content of the messages, whatever was being said, the point they seem to be making was that they should not have the right to say it.” Posted by: SMOD at March 03, 2023 11:57 AM (RHGPo) 259

Posted by: Oddbob at March 03, 2023 11:59 AM (nfrXX) Chavez nationalized the oil industry and then used it as a cash cow and neglected reinvesting in the infrastructure. From there it went down hill I think Pemex is having the same problem Posted by: Kindltot - I am Harry Potter and William Wallace, the Na'avi and Han Solo. Do those stones also act to hold cold?
Slow to heat then slow to cool this giving lower day and higher night temps? The rocks will tend to moderate all temp changes Cooler in the day warmer st night Posted by: Paul at March 03, 2023 12:03 PM (NJWEp) 292

I also think that DC controls this game and Zelensky is the motor turning the wheels. ------- For SURE. I know they are driving this thing and have been for eight years, at least with regard to the big game in Ukraine. I wouldn't blame Germany for a nanosecond if they said "fuck this. Oma and Opa aren't going to freeze to death in our capital for the Big Guy's 10%. We're out!" But they aren't doing that. They're playing "let's you and him fight." Let 'em all turn into popsicles for all I care at this point. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at March 03, 2023 12:03 PM (oINRc) 294

Yeah, this bugs me too.
Posted by: sniffybigtoe at March 03, 2023 11:51 AM (Y5qcH) The other half of the equation is this: in order to produce oil or gas, you have to have a reservoir that contains it. A reservoir rock has to have porosity, open spaces between the mineral grains that make it up. And it has to have some permeability, a measure of the degree to which those pore spaces are interconnected. Mantle rocks, and very ancient crustal rocks typically have nearly zero of both properties. So, even if chemical conditions in the mantle were favorable to making hydrocarbons from primordial methane, there is no place to "put" them. Oh, and it takes massive quantities of hydrogen to force hydrocarbons to bond to other hydrocarbons. And that is not available on Earth.

I thought the idea behind Abiotic oil was microorganisms in the crust feeding on the trapped primordial methane and pooping oil.

Had to look up those references. Still don't know what the last bit meant, but I guess the first part meant I sounded like I'd copied Atlas Shrugged. I've never read it, or seen the movies, so it was unintentional. I was thinking of bearings shrieking and the sound of an engine not turning over because the battery is dead. Both of which will happen a lot in the near future if nothing changes. Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at March 03, 2023 12:05 PM (nC+QA) 300
Such a low comment count but yet my new thread radar is making bip noises, so pretty soon Lamont is going to give up on the reversed drill and be a provider is my guess.

If all oil comes from the dino age, how come we can extract oil from strata below the dino age?

... remember when the German delegates to the UN laughed at Trump telling them that they were weak and getting weaker
Yeah, remember that this is the new guy just sworn in last month who has been chiding and chastising them about that every day, and demanding that his country actually live up to its obligations? Remember that? Bunch of fucking super geniuses here, as usual. It's like "how badly can you misread the plain text." Some new kind of sophomoric college humor. Ice Cream/Shark attacks? Look at the drowning numbers, they are EXACT correlations...35,000+ per year, the second leading cause of deaths for children, second only to birth defects(potentially caused by Ice Cream as well)
....Black Children affected MOST!!!(not really, actually Native american indian/alaskan childrens rates are higher buuuut...they don't have the same level of Media Lobby/support) Black children 5 – 19 drown at rates 5.5 times higher than white children in pools. Black children 11-12 drown in pools at rates 10 times those of whites. If YOU will not ban Icecream to save the LIVES of this nation most vulnerable minorities? Clearly YOU are Racist! That "Things Made from Oil" graphic does not include asphalt, which is used to construct 90%+ (at least last I researched) of highways and roads in the country.
I learned that a while back from watching "Modern Marvels" episode about the nation's highways. No more oil, no more highways or fixed roads in the country. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at March 03, 2023 01:09 PM (Do5/p) 312
