Evil Groomer Corporation Disney literally cannot make anything new, so they're rebooting The Haunted Mansion. The original Haunted Mansion movie was just based on a ride, of course. Was the family in the ride black? I know the family in the first movie was -- Eddie Murphy was the father. Anyway, I know no one's going to see this and it is not something. However, watch the kid's first line in the first twenty seconds. It's good. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Having just read Peter Pan to my kids, the choice of including girls in the lost boys is particularly stupid as one of the main points of the story is how Wendy imparts some civility to them by virtue of the fact that she IS NOT a boy. Literal clown world on steroids.

About 10 years ago, the Royal Shakespeare Company commissioned a play called "Wendy & Peter Pan" which was from Wendy's Grrrrl Power! POV. Of course, the critics lauded the stunning and brave show. I had the misfortune of seeing a local production last year and the script was as dreadful and predictable as you'd expect - like it was written by an angsty middle schooler. Sounds like this reboot is in the same vein.

One of the best Pathfinder moments ever: My semi-nephew (nephew to my SiL) had a character who was convinced that his big brother was a deity. So we were stuck on a clue, and he proposed "calling on my big brother." Pooky allowed it, and we placed a call to his actual older brother, who's a genius at improv. He was given word limitations and absolutely nailed it, meaning we were able to move forward in the campaign. (We also made his day.)

It's bad enough that all American white female characters are always portrayed by British actresses suppressing their nauseating accents. My wife likes to say, "Now with added ...GAYNESS!!"
They take the same product but slap a "now with added...?" on the box. Now with added gayness. Now with added black person. Now with added female protagonist. But they are using these things as just cheap advertising gimmicks to sell us the same old product, over and over. See, it's different now, because we have a ...wait for it...black female in the movie! No, it's not actually different. It's so insulting to the audience, and also insulting to gays, black people, women, etc. You enjoy being nothing more than a cheap marketing gimmick? And if racism and sexism really were a "thing", would movie relentlessly shove these characters in? Isn't their goal to make money? Obviously, they think, this is how you do it. No just regular words but you have to suffer through a 15 second ad after every round. Some of the ads are truly bizarre. Posted by: jewells45 fuck cancer at March 02, 2023 06:20 PM (wagHN) 219

Shingles are extremely painful. I had a case of shingles. I'm half DiFi's age. It was itchy as hell and a little bit painful. Posted by: bonhomme at March 02, 2023 06:20 PM (eyxn4) 220

I refuse to watch the D&D movie because D&D has no story; it's a mintatures wargame. Like _Battleship_, whatever plot the writers might come up with is going to get kneecapped by the ridiculous game mechanics that the licensor will insist be shown on screen.
D&D ate the fantasy lit genre alive in 1983 and as a moron d'un certain age I'm getting tired of _every_ fantasy work having to be at least D&D adjacent. Posted by: Daniel Ream at March 02, 2023 07:31 PM (W9viL) 227
Haunted mansion has 2 reasons to watch, and they’re on Rosario Dawson.

Well, at least Peter Pan wasn't turned into a woman for the new movie.....which does have some precedent, with all the filmed stage-play versions of the story. I remember watching one 'movie' like that growing up, probably a musical version...

I have had some very good and very bad experiences at various tabletop roleplaying sessions. The old-fashioned Arnesonian-Gygaxian beer-and-pretzels style of gaming would frequently tantalize players by offering apparent magical advantages and snatching them away. The scene of a careless player entirely wasting the opportunity offered by a spell was classic Arneson-Gygax style. Gygax's players greatly respected him for their ability to beat them at this kind of mental challenge.
That being said, I think the Arneson-Gygax screw-the-players-for-everyone's-fun style is NOT good for high fantasy. It produces the atmosphere where the fourth wall is already broken for me. It prevents me from suspending disbelief. Posted by: longarch at March 03, 2023 08:45 PM (mARvI) 230
@Daniel Ream
Yes. I hate mainstream fantasy that tries to be D&D-adjacent, but at least this forced me to broaden my horizons. For example, I never would have discovered Akira Kurosawa's movies if Hollywood had not been so horrible. Unfortunately, anime is pretty close to Hollywood, otherwise I would advocate boycotting Hollywood and embracing anime. There are a few good stories to be found in anime, but a lot of anime is just mind-numbing television to keep the miserable proles from overthrowing their masters. Regarding Peter Pan and allegations of pedophilia, some critics claim the original author, Barrie, was either a victim or a perpetrator or both. Also, Alan Moore published a highly controversial spinoff that -- some critics alleged -- promoted sexual degeneracy.
